Valley of Fire State Park

PETROGLYPH TRAIL:This interpretive Trail begins just north of the Visitor’s Center, is 1/2 mile long, and follows some of the best petro-glyph available in the Valley of Fire. This is an easy hike along a sandy trail. The trail ends at Mouse’s Tank.

It is VERY important that you do NOT touch the petro-glyphs, as they can be easily damaged and history of this sort can’t simply be repaired for replaced.

Although nobody can say for certain what the petroglyphs mean, there is a sign at the beginning of the trail that ex-plains the most commonly accepted meanings.

GPS Coordinates:Latitude: 36.44107Longitude:114.51659

MOUSES TANKThe Mouse’s Tank in the Valley of Fire State Park derive’s it’s name from the legend of a an alleged outlaw Indian named Little Mouse. The legend tells that he was wanted for murder and hid out in Mouse’s Tank in the 1890’s. There are a few versions of the legend, and a few rebut-tals, you can read more about it by googling Little Mouse! Mouse’s Tank is reached via a half mile trail from the park-ing area. It is a natural depression in the sandstone and af-ter rainfall, water collects here. Because it is mostly shaded, the water sometimes remains for months.

THE CABINSThere are 2 Rock Cabins in the Valley of Fire State Park, built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930’s. The Cabins were built using native sandstone, and they were built to shelter weary travelers. GREAT picture taking spot!

The Valley of Fire State Park is Nevada’s oldest, and largest, State Park, dedicated in 1935. It is located just 55 miles from Las Vegas, off Interstate 15 at Exit #75.

The name comes from the Colorful Red Rock Formations that were formed 150 million years ago during the age of the di-nosaurs. Great shifting sand dunes created the incredible land-scape that is the Valley of Fire. Incredible rock art petroglyphs can still be seen at several locations within the park.

The Visitor’s Center is open daily from 8:30-4:30 and the ex-hibits include information about the geology, ecology, and his-tory of the park and nearby regions.

Fees • Entrance Fee: $10 per vehicle• $2 discount for Nevada Residents

LOST CITY MUSEUM

The Lost City Museum is located at 721 South Moapa Valley Blvd. in Overton, NV, about a 15 minute drive from the Valley of Fire State Park.

The Lost City Museum was established in 1935 by the National Park Service, in an effort to preserve and exhibit the artifacts that were being excavated from the Pueblo Grande de Nevada, which was being flooded with the water from Lake Mead as the Hoover Dam was being built. After the Lake was filled completely, approximately 5 miles of these Anasazi sites had been covered by the rising water.

The Civilian Conservation Corps also helped in the building of the museum, and the building was constructed of sun-dried adobe brick in a pueblo- revival style, and there is a reconstruction of an Anasazi Building that is open to the public. The museum is located on an actual prehistoric site of Ancestral Puebloan Indians who first populated southern Nevada beginning about 300 B.C. On display are an excavated pit house and reconstructed Puebloan houses

In addition to the regular exhibits, the Lost City Museum frequently offers special exhibits and offerings by local artisans. There is a gift shop in the museum

The Lost City Museum is open from 8:30 am-4:30 pm, Thursday through Sunday (closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day).

Admission is $5 per person for adults. Kids under 18 and Museum Mem-bers are free

ELDORADO CANYON AND THE TECHATTICUP GOLD MINE

Eldorado Canyon Mine Tours is based in Eldorado Canyon at the Historical Techatticup Mine. It’s the oldest, richest and most famous gold mine in SouthernNevada. You will visit historical sites where steamboats docked and stamp mills operated over 100 years ago.

Man per man and mile per mile Eldorado Canyon has a wider range of histori-cal events than anywhere in the Wild West. This guided above and below ground mining tour will take you into the mine and the history of the oldest and most famous gold mine in Southern Nevada.

This activity will consist of a walking tour of the old Techatticup Millsite. This is where the ore was brought out of the mine to the stamp mill, crushed to a powder and mixed in cyanide tanks where the gold & silver were separated. We’ll then proceed into the Savage Mine some 500 feet where you will view up and down shafts and actually see the veins they chased.

The air temperature in the mine is a cool comfortable 70 degrees yearround.

We will venture deep into this rumored haunted gold mine and visit 3 different shafts, one of which drops down to over 900 feet.Learn how the hardiest of men labored feverishly looking for GOLD while chis-eling their way through the mountainside inch by inch, with the most primitive of tools and working by candlelight.

Hoover Dam is lo-cated approximately 45 minutes from Las Vegas;

Eldorado Canyon is approximately 45-60 minutes from Hoover Dam.

Great combination trip to learn about the mighty Hoover Dam, and the history of the Miners in Eldorado Canyon.

Zion National Park Shuttle System

With more than 2.4 million visitors per year, Zion National Park thought ‘ahead of the game’ and came up with a great shuttle system to eliminate traffic and parking problems, and increase visitor enjoyment.

The Springdale Shuttle stops at six locations in Spring-dale. The Zion Canyon Shuttle loop stops at eight locations in the park. The transfer between loops is made at the Zion Canyon Visitor Center. You may get on and off as often as you like. Riding the shuttle is free.

How to use the shuttleAvoid parking hassles. Parking is limited inside Zion. One may park in the town of Springdale and ride the town shuttle to the park. Look for the ‘’Shuttle Park-ing’’ signs throughout town. If you are staying at a lodge or motel, simply leave your car there and ride the town shuttle to the park. The parking lot at the Zion Canyon Visitor Center commonly fills by mid morning. Tune your radio to 1610 AM for additional information.

Take Your TimeBuses run frequently throughout the day, as often as every seven minutes. You do not need to rush to catch one. Take your time to plan your visit. Use the exhibits outdoors and the information inside at the Zion Canyon Visitor Center to make the most of your time. Ranger presentations at the Zion Human His-tory Museum are a great way to learn more about the park before you ride the shuttle up canyon. The bookstore has maps and publications that can aug-ment your visit.

Times and intervals change with the seasons. Current schedules are posted at each shuttle stop, the Visitor Centers, and in your park guide.

Zion National Park is located in southern Utah, approximately 3 hours from Las Vegas. This park is unlike any other place in the world, with scenery ranging from high mountains to low desert. This was Utah’s FIRST National Park, and you really have to walk, or hike, among the towering cliffs and narrow canyon walls to truly experience it.

Admission to the park is $25 for a private vehicle, and it is good for 7 days. Other fees available on website, including FREE days in 2011! Admission on foot is $12 per person.

One GREAT service at this park is the FREE Shuttle System. You can park your car in Springdale, just outside Zion, or inside Zion, and utilize this shuttle that makes frequent stops all day long. See more info on shuttle below...

Another GREAT feature of this park: The Zion Newspaper you get FREE when you enter the park. This newspaper contains up to date informa-tion about road closures, programs in the park, maps, guides and more. Truly one of the best National Park Guides we have seen so far!

The website is also one of the best we’ve seen, with up to date informa-tion, tons of useful downloads, great photos, educational information, and more. Visit this website at: www.nps.gov/zion.

Grand Canyon West Ranch

NEW! Buffalo SafarisNigel Turner the owner of Grand Canyon Ranch stated “I am excited to announce the introduction of Buffalo Safaris by horse back or horse drawn wagon for visitors to my Ranch.

Visitors have the ultimate “Western Experience.” In one day they will see the Grand Canyon by Heli-copter with Heli USA Airways, land and experience my historic ranch, be entertained by professional western entertainers and now go on a buffalo safari on horseback or horse drawn wagon” he said. He further stated “All other West Rim tour operators in Las Vegas sell the same thing, we are different.

Turner further said “You know at the beginning of the 1800 ‘s over 30 million buffalo roamed the plains. By the end of the century we had almost wiped out this magnificent creature, often with machine guns, to a few hundred remaining animals. Most of these were luckily protected in the San Francisco Zoo. The buffalo were put on the endangered species act and have now grown to a few thousand. It puts a lump in your throat to see these once persecuted animals now roaming free on the Ranch.”

Grand Canyon Ranch-Directions and MapHistoric Guest and Working Cattle Ranch Grand Canyon Ranch has a colorful history. The original ranch headquarters is located next to Diamond Bar Springs, known to Native Americans for the last 3,600 years. The oldest inhabitants at the springs were the Cohina Indians whose roasting pits have been carbon dated back to circa 1600 B.C. The Indians called the springs “Tanyika Springs.”

Around 1860, after the Hualapai War, gold miners built a Stamp Mill to crush ore for the King Tut Gold Mine. From the 1870’s onwards, the Mormons used the springs as a resting and watering place for wagon trains. In May 1889, the Hualapai Indian Tribe’s first Ghost Dance ritual was held at the Springs.

In 1904 the alleged gunfighter and cattle rancher, “Tap” Duncan purchased the ranch to escape from his previous “profession.” He became one of the most widely respected pioneer cattlemen. From 1915 onwards, an unknown cowboy called Bruce Kisskadon worked for Tap. He wrote about the ranch and in doing so started “Cowboy Poetry.”
