Goals of the Roadmap Workshop

• There is a desire and expectation that the use of “smart glasses” will proliferate quickly for both consumer and industrial applications. The workshop aims to:– Identify technology gaps, barriers to widespread adoption, standards

needs and other issues to be addressed in enabling this vision– Identify use cases and where technology gaps and needs intersect for

these specific applications– Serve as the first step in launching a working group that will document

and address identified items towards a summary report by the end of 2015

– Where possible, make recommendations to industry to initiate follow on actions in 2016 that will address and accelerate solutions to the identified issues

Vision Statement

• The roadmap initiative is about defining industry key drivers and syncing timelines across multiple players in the augmented reality ecosystem. Similar roadmaps based on Moore's law have proven to accelerate their respective industries. The AWE workshop is about identifying the drivers (e.g. Processing, Displays, Sensors, Interaction), and predicting a timeline for their progress as a self fulfilling prophecy to accelerate the progress of the industry.

What is a Roadmap?

• A roadmap may be considered a collective vision of a path towards a shared goal

• A roadmap defines activities, approaches, and timelines to move from an “AS IS” to a “TO BE” condition

• The roadmap should go beyond identifying problems and challenges, and should make recommendations for actions and solutions

• A roadmap sets a high level view that will lead to multiple projects that address the specific issues

Ground Rules• NO DISCUSSION OF PROPRIETARY INFORMATION• In advance of this workshop, selected participants were asked to

contribute ideas on technology issues and use cases to “seed” the workshop discussions

• Idea gathering – all ideas are accepted; no rebuttals/critiques as part of the information gathering phase

• Sub-groups will form to discuss and prioritize ideas for presentation/discussion with the larger group

• We will attempt to form sub-groups that reflect a cross-section of stakeholders as best possible

• All the raw data will be captured for use in developing a first draft of the findings summary

Format

• Introduction and logistics• a) 30 minutes Data Gathering, • b) 10 minutes prioritizing, • c) 20 minutes sub-group presentations

• Form groups of 4-5 people (we can preselect, or do random count off, group number assignment – depends on who we know will attend)

• Each group is assigned to an easel/board and given sticky notes to record and post ideas

• Second round – prioritization of compiled sticky notes

Breakout Group – Brainstorm Questions –

• Within each group – questions/issues should be discussed within each breakout group domain (~5 minute brainstorm on each)– Smart eye ware in your market:

• Buying criteria – what are the top 5 for your market• Top Use Case – top 5 obstacles and challenges to

overcome• What needs to happen to overcome the hurdles (3-5

solutions)

– Rank order the the top 5

NEXT STEPS

• The core team will summarize workshop findings to be incorporated into the planned roadmap white paper

• Team will meet bi-weekly on an ongoing basis to develop the white paper– WE INVITE YOU TO JOIN THE TEAM!

• IEEE will host a follow on full day working session and/or workshop in the fall to further the work of the team

• Goal for white paper completion is December 2015• IEEE Industry Connections will support the white paper

effort and other 2016 follow on activities as needed
