Awards2013

Thanks to all those who came to the 8th TJ Awards ceremony in November, it was fabulous night with everyone enjoying the celebrations. We saw some surprises this year with two double gold winners in a single category and three double gold winners, resulting

in a record number of trophies being presented at the dinner.

Commenting on the night, Robert Wagner from DPG said: “What an excellent way to spend an

evening, celebrating the successes of the best in the world of L&D and recognising the achievements of so many learning professionals. Congratulations to all the winners and everyone who was short listed. Keep up the good work and let’s make 2014 an even more successful one for our profession.”

Well done to all our winners and I look forward to hearing more about the great work being carried out in our community when next year’s awards open in February.

Debbie Carter provides a fl avour of theprogrammes that scooped the prizes this year

Project Choice is a work-based internship programme for young people with learning difficulties. It is based in both public and private sector organisations and young people are supported by mentors for four days a week and spend one day a week undertaking academic study to improve their employment skills.

Graham O’Connell and Keith Tanner, public sector judges said: “The impact on those attending the programme is impressive and heart-warming. The growth in their confidence, the nature of the work they are doing and the wider impact on those around them is powerful evidence of personal benefits.”

David Goddin and Margaret Burnside, mentoring judges said: “We recognised the professional and focused implementation of a programme that is making a clear and positive impact. It shows impressive levels of collaboration and engagement between all parties involved in the service of the mentees. The holistic approach and engagement demonstrated by Project Choice could be held up as a model of great mentoring practice to inspire others in any setting.”

This entry told the story of how patients with failed kidneys, needing dialysis three times a week, have been given back their independence and confidence. This has been done by offering, encouraging and supporting patients to become more involved in their dialysis treatment through the Shared Haemodialysis Care programme.

Graham O’Connell and Keith Tanner, public sector judges said: “This is a good application and an excellent presentation brought the project to life. The programme challenges traditional thinking and has clearly had an effect on the culture as well as making significant impacts on nursing practices and the patient experience. It is a great combination of stakeholder management, user engagement and imaginative approaches to training delivery. Most importantly this has led to measurable, and immeasurable, benefits for patients. It is great to see this approach being taken on in other parts of the country. It is a worthy winner not just because of the life-enhancing outcomes but because of the excellent training practices that has delivered those results.”

Since May 2010 the Trust has developed an initiative to create a brand of NHS Apprenticeships that delivers employment and development opportunities in the local NHS. It has benefited hugely from the training of existing staff using apprenticeship frameworks and feedback from managers of staff is that productivity has increased as staff have a better understanding of the broader background to their roles.

This exciting new talent stream helps them create a highly trained, sustainable workforce offering outstanding patient care.

Alison Fuller and Martyn Sloman, apprenticeship judges said: “We particularly liked the pre-apprenticeship programme and felt their business case was strongly presented. They showed good awareness of the national context on apprenticeships and there was a real link with the community which again we commend.”

Best coaching and best customer service programmeGold: Protyre

Best apprenticeship programme sponsored by learndirectGold: Norfolk & Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

Protyre recognised the need raise the bar by providing exceptional customer service. The strategy of using an ongoing training programme which was delivered locally and in a sustained and ongoing fashion using the Continue and Begin Fast Coaching ® Technique allowed them to improve their customer service, with consequential bottom line results and improved staff moral.

Penny de Valk and Jane Saunders, coaching judges said: “By enabling area managers to train centre managers in coaching skills there has been a profound effect on the business and on individual managers at Protyre.  Embedding coaching as a management style has led to improvements in staff performance, behaviour and turnover which in turn have resulted in enhanced customer experience and retention. It was an unbeatable combination and truly awesome!”

Anne-Marie Hearne and Frea O’Brien, customer service judges said: “We felt the business demonstrated a real commitment to improving the service delivered to their customers through the engagement of employees. They are passionate and proud of the service they deliver and have set the bench mark for other businesses in the sector.”

SABMiller’s leadership development programme uniquely designed according to best practice findings from Ashridge Learning Transfer and Neuroscience research, and delivering uncontested business impact supporting revenue growth ahead of competitors, creating a high performance leadership community driving the business strategy, and delivering a 95 per cent talent retention rate.

Shaun O’Brien and Robert Terry, learning transfer judges said: “This programme combines excellent learning and transfer practice, offering participants a stretching personal development experience with a high probability of positive business impact

“We were especially pleased to note the care taken during the learner selection process and the pre-design research. We liked the clear articulation of learning and behavioural objectives and the presence of a structured package of pre-work, designed to prepare participants for the learning experience. This is an outstanding example of best practice in learning transfer and SABMiller and their partners Ashridge are to be congratulated on their achievement.”

Best practice in learning transfer sponsored by Boost MarketingGold: SABMiller Europe & Ashridge Business School Phoenix Futures has been providing holistic drug

and alcohol treatments for over 40 years and is now tailoring its programmes to support its service users into further education.

Phoenix developed the service user qualification to deliver functional skills, support clients into tailored qualifications to enhance their employability and guide them into further education if they chose. This was achieved through an initial screening and diagnostics backed up by learning resources and ultimately improved levels of literacy and numeracy. This gave service users the foundations needed to move forward and work towards the qualifications available, help them secure employment or enter further education and lead independent and fulfilled lives.

Kimberley Hare and Liz Webster, not for profit judges said: “The idea behind this application is highly commended.  There was clear passion for the scheme from all the team presenting and we were also impressed with the vision and future plans on how this approach will be scaled up in the coming months and years.”

L&D impacts don’t come much bigger than the 2012 Olympics and the work of Karen Mckenzie-Irvine played a vital part, training and supporting 4,000 Travel Ambassadors and making volunteering a permanent feature at TfL. Now Karen is busy delivering a new and ambitious programme for 3,500 people managers. Karen truly delivers strategic and transformational L&D.

Julia Hart and Karen Velasco category judges said “Karen Mackenzie Irvine of Transport for London impressed us with an extremely well-thought out written submission, and a professional and engaging interview. Karen’s work in training and supporting 4,000 travel ambassadors for the Olympic Games with only six weeks to prepare was impressive.  Her drive, enthusiasm, passion and energy for all aspects of learning and development shone through and she demonstrated excellent all-round knowledge.”

Andy Mills has been a police trainer for over five years and volunteered to develop and implement the communication skills training for Greater Manchester Police. He has been leading the design and training team that delivered new standards of learning that has begun to change performance culture, and despite facing high levels of resistance and cynicism to these initiatives Andy has remained the lynchpin and without him the project would not have seen such high levels of success.

Julia Hart and Karen Velasco, category judges said: “Andy is a relative newcomer to L&D. A policeman by background he has been instrumental in bringing about widespread culture change within the Greater Manchester Police, winning hearts and minds in an organisation typically characterised by cynicism and resistance to change. We were captivated by the way in which Andy demonstrated that if you believe in a cause strongly enough you can bring about radical performance improvement against all the odds.”

South Oxfordshire and Vale of White Horse were the first district councils in the country to fully share services throughout all levels and across all service teams of the organisations. This shared senior management structure inevitably led to increased pressure on the managers. They had received little formal support and training in the past and were now facing the challenges of managing a team made up of people from two councils with very different cultures and working practices.

The Mastering Management programme provided all managers with skills and techniques to deal with the challenges of this change project. The programme focused on enhancing managers’ behaviours to challenge poor performance, manage constructive conversations and motivate their new teams.

Sarah Cook, Steve Macaulay and Richard Smith, category judges said: “This merger of two district council ‘back offices’ had many potentially difficult aspects, any of which could have derailed the process. A well-thought-through transformation programme which included a strong personal skills training component has led to a successful integration.”

Best commercial programmeGold: RSA

Best change management programme Sponsored by APM-GroupGold: South Oxfordshire and Vale of White Horse District CouncilsOften when training takes less time and costs less,

there is a trade-off. Yet when Royal Sun Alliance introduced an entirely new approach to call centre systems training the company significantly improved customer experience and call centre agent productivity. This was the first time they had combined classroom training with e-learning for systems training and the programme ATS enabled RSA to create a real time, exact replica of their underwriting system accessed via a self-service portal, enabling staff to explore and interact with the system exactly as if it was the real thing.

John Baker and Andy Holmes, category judges said: “This entry demonstrated a sound and well proven business case in a customer service environment, working with a challenging business community to deliver a step change in both the way learning is delivered and the results achieved.  The L&D team adopted a more confident and challenging style in dealing with the business, convincing them to adopt a radically different approach after the initial pilot (using traditional methods) showed early indications of not delivering the level of change required.  This new approach is now being seen as a market leader both within and outside the company.”

“Skills to Succeed is an Accenture project within its Corporate Citizenship Initiative, that aims to equip 500,000 people across the world with the skills they need to get a job or build a business by 2015. In the UK Accenture worked with Assima, and other partners and focused on addressing youth unemployment through building employability skills and confidence for young people aged 15-24 – primarily those who are not in education, employment or training. The Skills to Succeed Academy delivered compelling and engaging training content on a single platform made available to employability partners to drive greater impact for them and reduce duplication of effort and resources.”

Clare Forrest and David Cotton, category judges said: “In a very competitive field, the Skills to Succeed Academy project just edged ahead of its rivals. We were blown away by the number and diversity of the partners involved; from job seekers to welfare advisers and, of course, Assima and many, many more. We were particularly inspired that Accenture, who initiated the project, have nothing to gain from it financially but were inspired to innovate on a pro-bono, CSR basis. Even more inspiring is that the partners – and especially Assima agreed to offer their considerable expertise, time and money on the same basis.”

Best training partnership programmeGold: Assima and Accenture

Houghton is a global metalworking fluids company and as a result of new acquisitions there was a need to communicate the company strategies through their 150 strong European sales force encompassing a broad mix of countries, languages and cultures. Working in partnership with Frost and Sullivan and Ommunic a consultative selling training programme was developed called HELIX and it has driven behavioural and cultural change, and measurable improvements in skills, customer satisfaction and profitability. HELIX has since become the basis for professional development of Houghton salespeople globally.

Cheryl Harding and Tim Royds, category judges said: “In a year when the entries to this category were unusually high, the judges felt that the HELIX initiative was truly ‘exceptional’. The programme both enhanced selling ability and achieved a significant evolution in the culture of the sales team to one which is even more consultative and customer focused than before. As a consequence sales results have increased substantially – from a level which was already regarded as ‘successful’.”

DHL Express takes leadership development very seriously and to show that commitment took all of their global leadership team out of the business to develop them as leadership development facilitators. They in turn developed a further 150 managers to facilitate the rest of their global leaders through the programme.

Larry Reynolds and David Robertson, category judges said: “Last year this same collaborative team won gold in the commercial category for its impressive programme rolled out to 100,000 employees across 220 countries. This year DHL Express took the bold decision to take their CEO and global leadership team out of the business for two weeks and train them as leadership development facilitators. The end result was some 10,000 managers benefiting from this training, which focuses on the core values of results and respect, resulting in a transformation of the company’s turnover and profitability.”

HC-One is the UK’s third largest care home operator, created as part of the rescue of the Southern Cross business. Through its innovative ‘touch’ project, developed with Acteon, HC-One has made learning and development a driver of business transformation as it re-engages and re-invigorates 15,000 staff.

Stella Collins and Andrea Moffat, operational category judges said: “At a time when care is in the news for all the wrong reasons Acteon and HC-One have put L&D at the forefront of a transformational change, in a people-facing business, by embracing technology.”

Bob Little and Laura Overton, category judges said: “This learning platform appears to be embedding new vision and values among the staff, driving quality improvement and ensuring compliance with regulations. Using independent the learning materials have prompted a five per cent increase in staff engagement, and increased certified compliance with mandatory training requirements from 20 per cent to 85 per cent in 12 months while changing the corporate culture from one focused on compliance to one focused on care.”

Improving Attitudes, Improving Outcomes is an innovative behavioural and educational development programme developed for the Doncaster & Bassetlaw Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in partnership with their head of education. The performance outcomes of the initiative were to improve the patient experience by changing the attitudes and behaviour of staff, resulting in a measureable change for the better.

Linda Holbeche and Martin Saville, category judges said: “Amid a pool of very compelling entries for this award, we felt this entry stands out, not only for its very clear impact on improving patients’ experience but also because the approach taken is very congruent with the principles and values of OD. Its innovative interventions were both bespoke to, and embedded within, the ward in question while also offering the potential for scaling into the wider organisation – all on a shoe-string budget!”
