Making a awards 2018 The Making a Difference Awards 2018 is our chance to celebrate the excellent work which takes place across the Trust, and to thank staff for their dedication, care and compassion. The Trust is very fortunate to have so many great staff who go out of their way to improve people’s lives, embodying our values in everything they do. These two teams have worked together to improve careand support for prisoners who are mentally unwell. Clinicalstaff and prison officers have worked together to reduceunnecessary admissions to hospital and lengths of stay.Feedback has been extremely positive.

For outstanding teamwork in a clinical area, presented to a team thatconsistently demonstrates a can do approach in implementing change orintroducing new services or ways of working.

These unsung heroes are dedicated toproviding welcoming green spaces at Trustproperties, not to mention keeping roads andpaths clear from snow and ice. They have alsodeveloped sensory gardens for patients andprovide internships for young people withlearning disabilities/autism.

Professional nursing andeducation team

This committed team helps make sure theTrust keeps up to date with rapid changes innursing standards, ensuring the Trust remainsat the forefront of nursing. They offerinvaluable support to all student nurses andthose starting out in their careers.

This hardworking team is caring and encouraging to boththe service users and to the medical students themselves,who they hope to inspire to specialise in psychiatry. Izzy showed extraordinary support and care for a manwith Down’s Syndrome during his work experience withher team. Without any formal experience of workingwith people with learning disabilities, she succeeded inmaking a real difference to this man’s life.

These four young people have helped come up with ideasto improve services. They support and encourage eachother and have grown in confidence. They’ve workedhard to improve services, using their own experiences tomake a difference for other young people.

Pete is an exceptional volunteer who gives uphis time to support carers, family and friendsto visit their loved ones in hospital. Without hiscommitment many service users would notenjoy regular visits. He is also a great listenerand conversationalist who brightens uppeople’s journeys.

Ian Alderson and Rosie thetherapy dogVolunteers at West Park Hospital,Darlington

A visit from Rosie can really brighten up apatient’s day, not to mention putting a smileon the faces of staff. Ian has spent timetraining Rosie to adapt to every situation andshe is extremely intuitive. Their visits have areal positive impact on both patients and staff.

Sophie is an integral member of the reception team and amuch appreciated friendly face to those who visit. Shegoes out of her way to help and care for clients. Sherecognises those that need extra support (or a hotchocolate!). Sophie is a real asset to the team.

Service users were involved in the design of this innovativeservice, which was set up to help people who go to anumber of different services because they feel their needsaren’t being met. This award showcases best practice and innovation. Presented to a clinical teamor individual who has successfully implemented a new or improved service ordelivered a successful project.

FINALISTSTeesside all age liaison anddiversion team

This team was nominated for the excellentwork they’ve done in suicide prevention forperpetrators of child sexual exploitation.They’ve worked closely with the police toprovide intense support to individuals. Theteam has applied to York University to pursueresearch in this area.

Children and young people'sautism assessment teamCounty Durham and Darlington

This creative team developed and piloted aninnovative autism assessment process,reducing waiting times and assessmentcompletion times. The average wait hasreduced from 119 to 26 weeks and the targetis now 12 weeks. Feedback from families hasbeen extremely positive.

HIGHLY COMMENDEDTeri SandersSafe Haven project, York

Teri was nominated for her hard work in setting up thenew Safe Haven service in York. She listened to the ideasof service users and worked with different organisationsto make this a reality. The Safe Haven is now somewhereservice users can go for support before they are in crisis.

This unique training course for the South Asiancommunity is run by the Trust, Nur Fitness andMiddlesbrough community learning services. As a result,more women are volunteering or working for the Trust,and our staffing demographic is more reflective of thelocal communities.

This team has been described as deserving amedal for their innovative approach to talentmanagement and appraisal plus. They believethat if staff have meaningful talentmanagement conversations, they will providebetter services. Feedback from staff has beenextremely positive.

Yvonne LiddlePop-up library

The popular pop-up library brings the Trust’slibrary resources and staff expertise to outlyingareas of the Trust, reaching colleagues whodon’t normally use the service. Last year 2,500books were issued and 150 literature searcheswere conducted for staff.

HIGHLY COMMENDEDAutism strategy project team

Putting people with autism at the centre of services iscentral to this team. They have demonstrated the vision,ambition and leadership required to provide mentalhealth services that meet the needs of people withautism, helping them lead fulfilling and rewarding lives.

This team face daily challenges, often working alone inthe community and managing complex situations. In aneffort to tackle high levels of staff turnover and sicknessthe team introduced a range of initiatives which havedramatically improved staff wellbeing and patient care.

This award is chosen by public vote. It celebrates an individual or team who hasgone the extra mile to help and support, recognising their care and compassion.

FINALISTSTina ProfittClinical nurse specialist, Stockton on Tees

Described as a true leader and inspiration to allnurses, Tina received six nominations. Duringher 30 year career she has always gone aboveand beyond, putting the patient first, acting astheir advocate and ensuring they receive thehighest quality care. Her huge heart, empathyand warmth are loved by everyone she workswith.

Up for their second award, this team isworking hard to help provide mental healthservices that meet the needs of autistic people.Non-clinical and clinical staff have workedalongside service users and carers to developautism awareness training and adjusted carepathways.

This team rose to the challenge of improving staffwellbeing and resilience; developing service userparticipation; raising awareness of mental health issues inyoung people and strengthening links with partneragencies. They have been involved in some fantasticevents with resounding success.

FINALISTSJenny ForgeConsultant psychiatrist, Durham

Jenny worked with a service user’s parent toset up a parent support project, which hashelped hundreds of parents and won nationalawards. She recognises the family’s role in ayoung persons’ recovery and has helped othersdevelop the skills and confidence they need.

Andrew BullAssociate practitioner, child andadolescent mental health services, Durham

Andrew is an unsung hero whose thoughtful,caring nature is appreciated by everyone. Hehas a real enthusiasm for helping youngpeople. Andrew recently encouragedyoungsters to build and race a soapbox go-kart to help them develop their skills and buildtheir self-confidence.

Polly was nominated by a service user for the differenceshe’s made to this lady’s family. She supported themthrough a very difficult time, helping the individual to getback into the community through volunteering. Shebelieves “everyone should have a Polly”.
