Mrs Hayward’s Class - Learning From HomeStudents and parents have been very busy learning from home since last term. Our class has been using Class Dojo to communicate and the portfolios for students to upload their tasks, photos, videos and share some of the great work they are doing at home. Some students have been using the time

at home to do some jobs to help out around the house and learn some new skills like vacuuming and cooking. It has been wonderful to catch up in our weekly Zoom chats and participate in some fun activities. We are all looking forward to getting back into the classroom this week.

Stage 2 Distance Learning3/4B The children in 3/4B have been working extremely hard during these trying times, whether at school or at home with online learning or book packs. I am extremely pleased and proud with the way they have taken on the challenge and shown their maturity in doing this type of schooling. As a teacher it has been a lot of hard work, but the kids have risen to the challenge. I would also like to say a HUGE thank you to the parents of my class for all the hard work that they have had to put in and had to endure as well. Without you and your guidance, I or your children would have struggled. Great work 3/4B!

3/4K A huge thank you to both the kids and parents/carers in 3/4K. The schoolwork for both online and offline workers has been fantastic to see as I know that so much effort has been put into the work during this trying time. An absolute huge thank you to the parents/carers and all who have been involved in the kids learning, it has been most greatly appreciated, more than you know. Thank you so much as well, for keeping the kids safe, happy and well as I have loved seeing all of the kid’s big beautiful smiles, when they have returned to school and hearing about their adventures during COVID 19. To the 3/4K kids, thank you for your resilience, not giving up, maintaining your happiness and your beautiful personalities; you are all individually amazing kids! I’m very lucky to be your teacher. Thanks again parents/carers for all of your support and assistance I certainly would have been lost without you, so thanks again.

3/4S I can’t believe it has been around a month and a half since we were told to work from home. 3/4S are doing an absolutely SUPER job with the online learning they have been faced with in that time and all of the stage 2 teachers are very proud of the efforts they are putting into their work.

We have done lots of writing in that time and I am really impressed with how much students are

improving. For maths, we have been using a new website called Mathletics and students have really enjoyed playing some fun multiplication games and challenging each other to a maths speed test at times. We have shown off our other talents, we have performed circus skits, been active for our PE challenges and learnt all about the wonderful country in which we live. I’m really enjoying the zoom check ins where I have met pet chickens, dogs, cats, little brothers and sisters and had brief pop ins from some of our wonderful parents. Most of all though, I really enjoy my time when I get to come into school and see some of your smiling faces and I look forward to when everything can go back to normal and we can complete our lessons in the classroom again.

I would like to take this time to thank all of our lovely parents and carers for the efforts they have put into supporting students in this difficult time. You guys rock!!!!!

Stage 2 Wonderful Work Suri’s Colourful World

By Chase Edwards

Suri looking over the wall begins to tell the children what she can ‘see’. Suri wants the children to feel safe and happy by creating an imaginative circus like picture in all the heads. Suri doesn’t want the children to know of the awful, horrible, brutal war going on around them.

The weather is crisp and warm, a beautiful blue sky with fluffy marshmallow-like clouds. The grass is the most beautiful shade of green and is perfectly trimmed. The smell of fresh popping popcorn and sweet fairy floss float through the air.

Suri begins, I can see an enormous circus tent with thick blue and yellow stripes. The tent is filled with ferocious tigers, cheeky monkeys and laughing clowns. The children are being entertained by a spectacular circus performance, the children have huge smiles on their faces from ear to ear.

Huge amounts of love and laughter flood the circus grounds like an overflowing bath.

All the children and their families are having bucket loads of fun!

Persuasive Argument by Owen Bryant

Ruff, ruff, ruff, the pug shouts with his cute curly tail and big friendly smile. What a wonderful way to be welcomed when you walk into school. Our school should have a dog like this.

We need a pug in the playground, if we don’t all the lonely people not playing with anyone, they could play with the dog. I’ve seen people smiling around dogs, so that proves that people enjoy their time with the dogs.

We need a dog in the school, because what if the teachers went off the playground to teach their class, but left kids out on the playground. The dog would get them to class on time. He would round up the students like sheep dogs round up sheep.

If a kid was sad who would cheer them up, because sometimes kids are still sad after the teacher cools them down, the person could cuddle with the dog. I’ve seen the way dogs snuggle with their owners. What if the dog could do that to our students?

So, I think we should have a dog in this school. The dog would make a huge improvement on the school by getting people to class on time and make people happier in the playground.

‘Why a dog would be a great idea for our school’

Persuasive Text by Ava BairdDear Mrs Sanday

I believe it would be a great idea for our school to adopt a dog from an animal centre. Dogs are very

intelligent and fun animals to have around.

Dogs are very good company. They can sense when you’re sick or hurt and sad. Having a dog in the

classroom would help stressed or confused kids. A dog might help kids when they are bad behaved to

calm down and relax. I think having a dog in the school would make all students happy.

A dog would be like a mini security guard because dogs have a super sense of smell and hearing. They

would be able to protect the kids and farm animals

by barking and scaring off any predators. Dogs could

even help us evacuate if needed with the right training. Dogs can deliver worksheets that have been

printed by teachers for students. Dogs can also be secondary cleaners after class to help clean up food

scraps.

All dogs have had to be put down, because no one wants them and that’s just really devastating for

them. If we were to get a dog we could save its life. It could have been one of those dogs that were

supposed to get put down and we saved its life. How would you feel being responsible for a dog having

to get put down?

Please think about my idea about getting a dog for our school community.

Stage 3 Distance LearningOver the past three months our Stage 3 students have consistently amazed us with their ability to adapt to the opportunities and challenges of remote learning. With the support of their families, our students have continued to make progress in their learning and significantly developed their independence and autonomy. The three Stage 3 classes combined online to make one big class and this was a great opportunity for our teaching team to get to know the students more. All work submitted online was marked and returned to students with feedback. We would like to thank the parents and carers for their support of the students and our teaching team throughout this period. We believe that the important partnership between parents and teachers has never been stronger.

In late Term 1 we focused on building our online community in Google Classroom and began providing a matching offline option in the form of booklets. The morning online check-in provided us with an excellent means of monitoring student wellbeing and attendance and consistently had over 50 messages posted each day. The teachers also checked in by phone with families who were using the offline materials to offer support and encouragement. It became apparent early on that students were missing the connection to their friends, so we started the cooee call bell ringing in the afternoon as a way of feeling connected. Many students enjoyed hearing their neighbours cooee back and parents reported positive feedback about the idea. We even made the news on NBN (visit https://www.nbnnews.com.au/2020/04/02/cooee-call-spreads-across-the-central-coast/ if you missed it).

Another strategy for increasing students’ sense of connection was made available by the Department of Education, and Stage 3 teachers and students quickly embraced the Zoom videoconferencing platform and began using it for daily catch-ups and tutorials. This was very successful in building a feeling of connectedness between students and teachers, as

well as in supporting student learning.

English In Term 2 students settled into the new norm of online or remote learning and produced some outstanding work. In particular, we saw big improvements in writing from many students. We believe this is because Google Classroom allows for very specific feedback and editing of writing from teachers and allows students to quickly and easily apply that feedback and resubmit their work, in a way they are not always so willing to do with written feedback in their workbooks.

Through the use of multimedia and print resources for reading, we also saw improvements in students’ ability to locate information from texts and to summarise the main ideas of a text. We were also able to keep working on research skills, with library lessons provided by Mrs Ryder.

As a teaching team, we have already begun reflecting on some of the successful teaching and learning from the remote learning period and are excitedly planning how we might adapt existing face to face teaching methods to incorporate the aspects of online learning that students enjoyed and benefited from.

Maths Over the period of online learning Stage 3 have covered a substantial amount of work. They have covered: addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, data, and measurement of area and perimeter. There have been constant challenges throughout, however, the dedication and perseverance shown by both students and parents was exceptional. The incorporation of Zoom classrooms to assist students in daily tasks helped the students access the difficult work and also help them touch base with the classroom teachers.

Stage 3 Distance LearningCAPA During Term 1, Stage 3 produced some amazing artworks investigating the use of line and colour. Moving into Term 2 the students transitioned from visual art into drama. This involved them using short videos to represent movement and mime.

May the 4th be with you…. On Monday the 4th of May the Stage 3 teachers decided to bring the dark side to the Zoom meetings. Streaming live from the Deathstar.

Science In Science this term students have been exploring the concept of magnetism, as well as completing some home learning science investigations to use the scientific method. These included making Rube Goldberg machines (eg. Noah’s domino chain) and a paper plane challenge (see Tom’s planes and Kadence’s data). Science is not always an easy thing to teach by distance but our students did a fantastic job of completing content based work in Google Classroom and finding objects around their house to complete our additional challenges.

STUDENT WORK SAMPLES

Do you want your kids at school all day long? Well I know you said yes, but my job today is to convince you why kids are better off staying home doing their school work.

Chit chat chittity chat, all day long. Most kids get very distracted at school because they are constantly next to their friends. And one easy way to fix it is just get them homeschooled, that way they would get their work done quicker, then there would be a lot more family time. But that’s not my main point. Kids are constantly going down in grades from so many distractions, according to scientific research.

If everyone was homeschooled there would be absolutely no physical bullying and cyberBullying can easily be monitored by parents.

Then there’s the uniforms. Uniforms are one of the dumbest things that someone has ever invented, It just makes students feel like soldiers and the parents are for sure gonna go broke! The costs are extremely high and there’s so much replacing coming up for the kids that grow a lot. Why doesn’t anyone think about the poor people these days? Instead they’re too busy trying to be the richest person on earth.

If you’re really desperate for time alone, let your child/children have some freedom. You could let them go over to their friends house or let them stay home alone while you go out.

Right now there is a big illness going around the world called the Corona Virus and if we don’t want anything like this to happen again and want to live a nice and healthy life, STUDENT’S SHOULD BE HOMESCHOOLED!!!

Pirate Diary Entry Thing Millie

by Ivy Thelning

4th April-7:43pm

Today was the first day of our voyage with the new crewmembers and let me say, those imbeciles are absolutelyuseless. This morning when Dad told us all to battle down thehatches for the upcoming storm, those morons just stoodaround doing nothing!! Me and Roger ended up doing everythinguntil Mum came and scolded them. Those idiots were scaredout of their skin! I don’t blame them, her mum voice canterrify Dad!!

4th April-8:07pm

I’m slightly frightened, the storm Dad warned us about isgetting really bad, we’ve had storms like this before but I havea bad feeling about this one.

4th April-11:34pm

It’s gotten worse. The wind has forced us inside. Roger hasbeen trying to get the door open. He should know its useless,Dad made it extremely important to remind us how strongthat lock is. Le and Lusamy or whatever their names are havejust been panicking this whole time, I think the only sane onesat this point are me and Mummy. We, like good sailors, havebeen quietly sitting in the corner keeping calm.I can hear Dad outside trying to control the ship, I know he’llkeep us safe.

5th April-12:28am

I don’t think we’ll make it, we’ve never had a storm this severe. As hard as I’m trying to stay calm, I can’t help but feelfrightened. Roger has given up on the door and is nowreleasing his anger and frustration on our new members, noneof them realising how much danger we’re in right now.

5th April-1:04am

We’re going down!! It seems the ship sprung a leak a while ago,but none of us realised. Everyone’s freaking out and Rogerhas now gone back to the door, desperately trying to get toDad.So this is how I’ll die.I never wanted it to end like this, but I guess that’s life. Well, I can’t write much but if someone finds this just know tha~

6th September-4:43pm

I woke up a few hours ago. The doctors said I’d been in acoma for around 3 months now. I don’t remember much butfrom reading my past entries I realise what must havehappened.Even though I made it, it seems not everyone did. Roger, Dadand Ms Lusama were found dead and Mum and Mr Li have notbeen found. As devastating as this news is, I must continue.

7th September-8:39am

I’ve been let out, I don’t know what I’ll do now but I’ll find a way,I’ll make Mummy proud.

8th September-5:17pm

Dear Diary,I met a boy today-

Invisible me by Layla Van Der Zwaag

“Haha look at her hair!” someone said. All the kids in the class were laughing at me. I wished I could disappear. I felt a strange tingling sensation in my feet. I thought it was just embarrassment but when I looked down there was nothing there! What just happened I thought. No it couldn’t be! I was invisible!

I ran to the toilets and stared into the mirror. I couldn’t see my short, brown hair or my dark, green eyes. I wondered what the kids in Wadalba would think.

“Where is Millie!!!” one kid would yell.

“She couldn’t have just disappeared!!” another would screech.

I ran back out of the toilets and climbed up onto the roof where I usually hide during recess and lunch and looked down at the playground. How is this possible, I thought.

I lay down and looked up at the clouds. It’s all a dream and I will wake up and everything will be fine, I thought, and I drifted into sleep. When I woke up I heard kids pouring out of their classrooms and out of the gate. Home time. I looked down at myself and I was not invisible anymore. So it was a dream, I thought. But if it was a dream, how did I fall asleep and how did I get on the roof? It couldn’t have been a dream but it couldn’t have been real. Magic!! I thought. This is too weird, I thought, and I jumped down from my roof and ran out the gate of the school.

I decided that I should go to my grandad’s shop and see what he thought. He would be the only one that would believe me. I grabbed my bike out of the garage and rode over.

“Invisible you say.”

“Yes Grandad, I was definitely invisible. I want to know if it was magic... If I could be magic.”

Grandad looked at me and replied, “The best things are both.” Then he went back over to the counter to serve a customer.

Later, I lay in my bed and thought, The best things are both…….What did he mean by that. In my whole life I have never seen anything magic until now. All I did was try to fit in with the other kids and all I do is stand out as the ‘weird kid’. “It doesn’t make sense” I sighed, my thoughts all over the place. Then I went to sleep.

I woke up, remembering the events that happened yesterday. Suddenly I was scared. I looked down and I was invisible again! I let out a small distressed yelp. Why is this happening? There was only one place I wanted to be.

I ran out the front door and ran down the street until I saw the sandy shore and the crashing waves. I curled up in a ball where the water met the sand so the sea would roll over my feet. I imagined myself melting away; everything disappearing. I imagined that Earth was not a planet and nothing was real.

I felt calm. “Nature. The best magic,” I muttered. I got up, looked at the sky and realized I had been at the beach for the whole day. “Oh no! I have to get home” I squealed.

My ears were ringing and my grandad’s words were echoing in my mind. I felt like I was going crazy. “I’m going back to his shop,” I breathed. As soon as I got home I grabbed my bike and bolted over.

“Grandad I don’t get it!” I wailed.

He stared down at my distressed face and said, “All in good time Millie. Be patient.”

My heart was racing and I stared at him. Even though I was silent my mind was screeching: Why do you have to be so vague!!!!!!!!!!!!

I went home feeling slightly annoyed. “Does anything make sense in this world,” I muttered.

“Millie!!!! Where have you been!!! Your teacher said you haven’t been at school for the last two days!” my mum said, sounding relieved but slightly angry.

“Um……..Er……..I went to….Um……..I got stuck inside…….. Ummmmm….I got lost in the forest…Err…….and my phone was…….Er……... flat…...yeah that….” I said trying to sound believable.

“Ok then……?” my mum said, sounding confused.

“That was close.” I said under my breath.

“What was that Millie??” my mum said suspiciously. “Oh…………...Er…...nothing..” I walked up-stairs to my room. trying to look normal. “Ok now that was close” I muttered. I looked at the clock and it was 8:30pm. I got in my PJS and went to bed.

I woke up, looked down and sighed. I was invisible again. “I’m sick of this,” I groaned. I got up and went to the beach again in the hope that doing what I did before would make me not invisible again, but that didn’t work. When I looked down there was still nothing there. “If I’m stuck invisible I might as well have fun.” I said, and I headed for the school.

As soon as I walked into the classroom I saw them. The bullies. I wanted revenge.

“Ah! My Chrome-book is floating!!!! Ghost!!!!! Help!!!!!!!!” one of the bullies screeched.

“Hey guys, who is rubbing my shoulders?” asked Veronica

“Errrrr……..Veronica…...no one is.”

“Ahhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!” Veronica shrieked

I chuckled and ran out of my classroom.

“Great…...I’m stuck invisible” I groaned. “All my fun is over…… unless……...heh…………...nah. Why am I so bored!” I said miserably. “Well no one can see me. Could this get any worse?’’

I had been invisible for about three days now. I saw posters saying:

MISSING GIRL

Name: Millie.

Millie has dark green eyes

and brown hair if found

please bring her to

67 Adam street,

Yellow Rose Terrace.

I missed family. Why was this happening? My mind was screaming.

Suddenly I heard a rustling in the bushes. I went to see what it was but there was nothing there. “Hello?????” I said.

I heard the rustling again

“Who’s there?!” an unknown voice said.

“Errrr…. My name is Millie.”

“You’re like me? Aren’t you?” said the unknown voice.

“My name is Mika.”

“What do you mean by ‘you’re like me’???” I asked.

“You’re invisible?”

“Errrrr, yes. I am invisible”

“Come with me…….”

“Errrrrrrrrrrr...Mika?? Where are we going?” I asked.

“My mums house,” said Mika.

“Your mum’s house is in the middle of the forest???” I asked, surprised.

“Just follow me.”

“Wait let me get this straight……...Your mum is a witch!! You tripped and knocked one of her potions off the shelf and it landed on you!!! And now you’re invisible!!!!!!!.” I exclaimed. “This doesn’t explain how I am invisible!!!!”

“Errr well it’s not that exactly….” Mika said.

“I started turning randomly invisible and my mum tried to help. But, when I was walking into my room, I tripped and knocked a potion…now I’m stuck invisible………...”

Mika’s mum had agreed to work on a new potion to try to fix our problem.

“Ok. My potion is ready. All you need to do is drink it,” Mika’s mum said.

Mika and I both drank the potion………...but nothing happened. “Errrr…..I dont think it worked,” I said

“That’s weird. Everything is done right. Unless you have to find the solution yourselves,” replied Mika’s mum.

Ohh noo! I thought. I decided to go back to see Grandad.

“Millie? I knew you were the one. You’re invisible!”

“Ok seriously, Grandad what is going on?!” I asked.

“If you must know………” Grandad replied “Some humans are magic. But only the ones who deserve magic.”

“The best things are both??”

“Yes!” Grandad replied.

“Ok. So now how do I turn not invisible???”

“You have to organize your thoughts. You need to think, never give up. Anything bad that comes your way, you push it back.”

“Ok then. How do I do that?”

“You just need to think………”

“Ok I just need to think” I said. I had to find a place to focus. I knew where I would go. I climbed up the ladder to my treehouse and plopped myself down on a bean-bag. It had been a long day and I was still invisible. I knew what I had to do, Just think……………….

“Hey, Mika I found a way to control invisibility”

“How?” Mika replied.

“You organize your thoughts. In other words, you think.”

“Really?? But it’s so simple.”

“Hey, it worked for me,” I said.

In my mind I was screeching: finally!!!!!!!! I’m not invisible!!!!!!!!

My feet hardly touched the ground when I ran back home. All I wanted to do was curl up in my bed and sleep.

The next day I returned to school and was surprised by who I saw.

“Hi Mika, I didn’t expect to see you at school!”

“Hi Millie. My mum said I was aloud to go to school”

“Great!”

After that everything was back to normal. Well sort of. Mika and I were visible and we went to school together. No one bullied me! Plus, with my new found control of my thoughts, my little invisibility trick became very handy at times.

It couldn’t be better.

Kids should learn how to cook“by Noah Edwards
