EcoCooling’s energy efficient internal and external fresh air, direct evaporative cooling systems have been developed alongside an advanced control system to comply with ASHRAE standards. With over 350 installations, EcoCooling systems have provided the cooling for some of the most efficient data centres in the UK.

Leicester City Council and Aberdeen University are just two of the organisations who have capitalised on the energy savings achievable with direct evaporative cooling:

ABERDEEN DC IS SET TO DELIVER 100K OF SAVINGS IN FIRST YEAR

The whole facility will deliver energy sav-ings in excess of £100K per annum. It is estimated the once the solution has been deployed it will deliver savings in excess of £500,000 over the next 5 years com-pared to the current technology. Aber-deen’s list of awards can be seen below:

The new carbon neutral cooling sys-tem takes advantage of the low power requirements of the EcoCooling system, using a photovoltaic system to power the units and fans. External ECP EcoCooling units were de-ployed in a plant room next to the data centre. The units were double stacked to conserve space. The previous facility was running at a PUE of 2.6.

EC FANS - THE HOLY GRAIL OF COST REDUCTION

ENERGY EFFICIENT COOLING TO ASHRAE STANDARDS

The fans consume the most energy in an EcoCooling system. The use of new EC fans in both DCs mentioned has allowed for reduced running costs: Operating the Eco-Cooling system at half speed reduces the fan energy use by over 85%, which means partial population and redundancy can in fact increase efficiency.

Each fan is individually speed controlled via the EcoCooling PLC control system meaning the correct airflow is delivered at all times.

EcoCooling’s control system allows for cold aisle temperatures of 18°C the majority of the year without any compromise in energy efficiency. During warmer ambient conditions the system simply allows the temperature to gradually rise falling back again as external temperatures reduce. This automatic adjustment of temperature is also used to control humidity levels.

Decreasing supply air temperature can reduce the power demands of server fans, which in turn leads to increased equipment reliability.

GOOD DESIGN - FRESH AIR COOLING FILTRATION EU4 pre-filter jackets: Used on both installations, these fit the cooler filtering the external air.EU4 cartridge filter : These can be fitted as part of the attemperation loop to ensure recirculated air is also filtered. EcoCooling can offer filtration options up to grade F7 if required.
