award winner (grant): "over the mountain" (storyboard sneak peek)
DESCRIPTION
My science-based children's picture book, "Over the Mountain," won a 2009 Allied Arts Foundation of Seattle grant. It is set in the Pacific Northwest and follows the travels of a male grizzly bear from one side of an ecologically diverse Pacific Northwest wilderness pass to the other from morning until evening. When I pitched the project to the Allied Arts Foundation, I said I would be working with Seattle illustrator and amateur naturalist Jeremy Eaton, a colleague of mine from my days editing the South Seattle Beacon. The book is written, and I’m in the slightly unorthodox process of having Jeremy illustrate it with his superior skills from my storyboard sketches (my first three rough sketches are shown here) before seeking an agent and/or publisher to move the book into final production.TRANSCRIPT
