Award-English Poem Teams
Po Leung Kuk Camões Tan Siu Lin Primary School
6A Kwok Sze Chai Melody (Senior Choral Speaking)
I have been in the English Group Poem Team since I
was in Primary 1. The poem for the Senior English
Choral Speaking Team this year was “When the
Funfair Comes to Town”. Ms. Judith Ng, Ms. Ivy
Wong and Ms. Glenda Tang were the teachers in
charge. They taught us how to interpret the poem; they
also listened to our opinions! Although we were well
prepared before the competition, we still felt a bit
nervous, yet, all of us were excited. With our great
performance during the competition, we won the
championship!
I have learnt a lot after joining the Senior English Choral Speaking Team.
I have gained courage and confidence. I also know how to better co-operate with
others. I make more new friends and learn more skills when reciting poems.
Lastly, I would like to thank the teachers in charge and all the other team members.
Without everyone’s co-operation, I am sure that we would not have performed so well
during the competition. We also had a great time during our practices and our party
time!
2E Cheng Yee King, Ethan (Solo Verse)
Ethan is a member of the Solo Verse Speaking Team. He
recited “Watching TV”, which is about a TV annoyed by
a child who was addicted to watching it. He used ample
facial expressions and variations in his voice to deliver
the speech.
Before the competition, he was not nervous at all. After
his recital, he was very content with his performance. When the adjudicator called out
his name after two other names, he thought he was 3rd
place. Only when he noticed
the word “Winner” did he realize he had won!
He has learnt from the competition that it is important to recite the poem well on stage.
It is even more important to keep quiet and learn from other competitors while
watching their performances on that day.
3C Wong Hoi Lam, Polly (Solo Verse)
I am happy to share my feelings on the 61st HK
Schools Speech Festival. When I interpreted it, I
imagined myself being the girl in the poem who
was very cute and outspoken. I felt a bit anxious
when I stepped onto the stage, so I took a deep
breath to relax myself and kept smiling.
When the adjudicator announced the result of the speech competition, he explained
that my facial expressions made me stand out from the others. I was overjoyed when
the result sheet was awarded to me. I want to thank my parents for supporting me
and practicing the poem with me patiently.
3E Charis Chan (Junior Choral Speaking)
Charis Chan is very experienced in reading
poems as she has been in the Choral
Speaking Team for two years. With great
co-operation, the team achieved 3rd
place
in the 61st Hong Kong Schools Speech
Festival.
This year, the poem was called “The
Dragon’s Birthday Party”. It was about children who baked a cake and threw the
dragon a surprise party. The team members put in a lot of effort to deliver the poem in
a lively way with plenty of variations in their voices. With the help of our teachers,
they succeeded in doing that. The Choral speaking team was neither nervous nor shy
while performing, as each one of the members had the support of their fellow team
members.
Charis would like to thank all the Choral Speaking Team members for their hard work
and co-operation. She would like to thank the teachers as well, for all the support and
help they have given to the team. According to Charis, it is really worth joining the
English Choral Speaking Team as she has a lot of opportunities to enhance her
teamwork and leadership skills.
4B Liu Wai Ming Jasmine Portia (Solo Verse)
After taking part in the Solo Verse Speaking of the 61st Hong Kong Schools Speech
Festival, Jasmine found herself to be more confident in all kinds of competitions.
During the early stages of her practice, she felt very nervous and worried the other
students might laugh at her as she always
pronounced some words incorrectly.
However, she soon overcame her nerves
after frequent practice with her parents
and her teacher. She felt so proud to win
the championship this year! Hopefully,
she will gain even more nice memories
and skills on reciting poems next year!
5A Wong Cheuk Wah Thomas (Solo Verse)
I started participating in the English Solo Verse Speaking
competition when I was in Primary one. I was very
nervous at my first recital in the competition five years ago.
Now, I have gradually adapted to the tense atmosphere at
the competition venue and I became the champion in the
61st HK Schools Speech Festival.
To understand the poem and the writer’s feelings is very
important. My parents helped me a lot in understanding the
meaning of the poem and improving my facial expressions. The better I understood
the poem, the better I could perform on the stage.
To take this year’s poem for example, I had some basic knowledge on shooting stars
and the universe. Therefore, I could express the writer’s feelings more fluently and
naturally.
I love reciting poems because I can learn English in a fun way!
