HIS HISTORY: AN INNOVATIVE TEACHING METHOD

Established in 1975 as the brainchild of 2 ski champions, Annie Famose and Isabelle Mir, the Village des Enfants was a concept found nowhere else in France. A new way of teaching skiing had been invented, and the Village des Enfants was at the forefront. The instructors used original teaching methods based on games and simulation exercises which made use of Annie Famose’s theory as expounded in her 1975 book L’enfant et le ski. Sliding games incorporating fun figures, snow features and half-hoops to ski through naturally encourage the correct posture in children, helping them maintain their balance and position as they slide downhill.

In 2012, the Village innovated once again by teaming up with Burton to introduce the Learn to Snowboard programme, a new way of teaching snowboarding to children from the age of four with no prior skiing tuition. Lessons take place in the Riglet Park in the heart of the learning zone at the Village des Enfants.

The concept involves sliding down gentle hills and negotiating miniature rails and specially designed features. This enables the children to acquire the reflexes needed to maintain stability and gets them used to turning.

THE VILLAGE DES ENFANTS: INTERNATIONAL SUCCESSIn December 2008, the runaway success of the Village des Enfants spawned the Annie Kids Ski Academy in Kiroro on the island of Hokkaido in Japan.

In winter 2007 Annie Famose invited some thirty Japanese visitors to Avoriaz to inspect the site, teaching methods, equipment, quality of the ski lifts and piste grooming, events programmes and more… everything that would form the basis of the Annie Kids Ski Academy in Kiroro.

And in December 2008 the first children's ski academy in Japan opened to great acclaim. The basics have been adopted point by point. The teaching method invented by Annie Famose is applied to ski instruction to young children aged 3 to 6.

ACTIVITIES TAILORED TO EACH CHILD’S (AND PARENT’S) NEEDS

• The Village des Enfants is much more than just a ski school, it’s a fun activity centre too. A host of indoor activities are on offer in the magnificent chalet which has several rooms, each for a different age group, with puppetry, reading, drawing, theatre, films, dressing up and face painting, shows and more:

> from 4pm to 5.30pm for children who want to enjoy the whole day there until the late afternoon, allowing parents to go off and do their own thing all day too!

> during lesson times, when the budding skier runs out of steam, tailored precisely to each child’s energy level.

> in the evening at the teen burger parties held during the school holidays, allowing older children to make friends, socialise and take home wonderful memories.

• Parents’ ski school: lessons timed to coincide with the children’s lessons (starting 15 minutes after and ending 15 minutes before the kids), offering parents peace of mind by enabling them to be there for the beginning and end of their children’s lessons.

• Ski school lunch option in the magnificent chalet located in the tiny tots learning area.

• A partnership arrangement with the day nursery, enabling the youngest children to have an afternoon nap after their morning’s skiing at the Village des Enfants. Nursery staff can come and collect the child at lunchtime and take them to the nursery for a quieter time in the afternoon, enabling parents to spend the whole day on the piste secure in the knowledge that their child is being properly looked after.

LESSON OPTIONS

Located in the heart of the car-free resort, the Village des Enfants boasts a 5-hectare learning zone with facilities for younger children (moguls, slides, mini courses, colourful lanes, etc.). More advanced children are taught by the Village instructors on pistes around the Portes du Soleil ski area. The Village des Enfants takes children from age 3 to 16: 7,000 of them each season, totalling an average of 47,000 skier-days.

• First steps - from age 3: enables each child to get used to being on skis and become completely self-sufficient, ensuring they get bitten by the skiing bug.

• Juniors and Teens - aged 5 to 16: the ski progression levels are as follows: ‘1er ski’, ‘Bronze’, ‘Argent’, ‘Vermeil’, ‘Or’ and ‘Platine’. Competition skiing with a choice of slalom, freeride, freestyle, and discovery skiing (all-terrain, boarder cross and exploring the Portes du Soleil ski area)

• Multi-snowsports: skiing in the morning and snowboarding in the afternoon.

• Snowboarding: aged 8 to 16: > First course: an introduction to snowboarding> Fun course: getting in to jumping> Advanced course: refining techniques, mastering the flat> Freeride course: mastering switch riding and getting

IGLOO MUSIC CONTEST

Avoriaz's Igloo Village is now bigger (an additional 100 m2) and has become a huge electro-pop, the most bonkers in the Alps! Throughout the season, Avoriaz will be signing up young groups and DJs over the Internet to compete against each other every Friday in a live event on the piste in front of a large crowd. The two ‘cool’ stages in the middle of the Igloo Village will be shaped out of snow. Electro, rap, pop, rock: every musical style will be featured. The grand finale will take place on the weekend of 8 to 10 April 2016. The line-up will be revealed at village-igloo.fr, with live updates and social media voting throughout the season.

The Igloo Village, over at Arare, is a wild and wonderful area of 300 m2 featuring incredible snow and ice sculptures in artfully lit surroundings. This modular venue can accommodate up to 300 people and boasts two ice bars, weekly concerts on the Igloo Terrace and an awesome ice grotto which this season has a new theme: music from around the world. Like last season, the Igloo Village will be open for a drink at the unforgettable Igloo Bar, an original dining experience and even a (n)ice night’s sleep in the ice hotel.

ROCK ON ULTIMATE11 TO 13 DECEMBER 2015

Last season’s edition of Rock On Ultimate was unforgettable, featuring the worldwide legend that is snowboarder Shaun White. But this season, the resort is getting ready to pump things up even higher with a line-up of top stars.The main event over the weekend will be on Saturday 12 December at 5pm in the resort centre, with one live performance from the massive Kavinsky, who will be taking the stage to electro-cute the crowd with their big sounds, bright lights, special effects and video.As every year, the weekend will also feature all the latest ski and snowboard trends in the huge test village featuring 50 exhibitors.The weekend will also be packed with events, competitions, happy hours and more, and not forgetting the live concerts in cult venues around the resort.

ROCK THE PISTES FESTIVAL12 TO 19 MARCH 2016

Concerts for skiers of all abilities on temporary stages around the ski area during the day, accessible only on skis, plus après-ski concerts in the resorts to carry on the fun afterwards.The only festival of its kind in Europe: concert admission with the Portes du Soleil ski pass for an amazing ski + music experience.The outstanding line-up in 2014 (The Do, Charlie Winston, Selah Sue, Dub Inc, Brigitte) attracted 20,000 festival-goers, all on skis. The festival also includes 25 fringe concerts over the week.

SNOWBOXX FESTIVAL12 TO 19 MARCH 2016

While the Rock The Pistes festival is getting the Portes du Soleil pistes buzzing, the Snowboxx Festival will be setting the resort alight. More than 4,000 people are expected to come along for this festival-within-a-festival. To hold the massive après-ski electro events, Avoriaz will be building a giant box in the middle of the old mountain chalets.This festival hub will be complemented by stages around the car-free centre, providing different kinds of music around the resort every evening.

AVORIAZ JAZZ UP1 TO 4 APRIL 2016

When jazz comes to Avoriaz, the whole resort comes alive with foot-tapping rhythms!Jazz Up is now firmly established as Avoriaz’s unmissable jazz event.The event consists of three amazing concerts in the Festival Hall, with a chance to mix with the artists over a cocktail afterwards.New for 2016: festival-goers can continue the evening in the two Jazz Up Cafés, listening to jazz groups playing from 10pm to 1am in the bar at the Hôtel des Dromonts and the lounge bar at the Amara.

SNOWBOMBING PRESENTS "TRANSITION" 13 TO 19 DECEMBER 2015

Snowbombing, Austria’s famous ski and music festival held in May-rhofen, is coming to France, to be hosted by Avoriaz. “Transition”, the latest offering from Snowbombing’s ski-electro-pop festival programme, will take place in Avoriaz from 13 to 19 December.The event will feature giant après-ski DJ sets, open-air live concerts, snowball fights, pool parties at Aquariaz and a giant tartiflette supper in the Stash with a live concert.

This competition is an import of the Yukigassen snowball battle sport very popular in Japan. A major competition recently took place there, on 24 and 25 January 2015, in Shikoku. Competitions are held every year in Canada too.

The format is a snowball battle between two teams of seven players on a snow pitch measuring 40 by 10 metres. The objective is to capture the flag of the opposing team. Games consist of three 3-minute sets, making it an intensive and explosive sport. Any player hit by a snowball is immediately expelled. To win a set, one team must capture the other side’s flag. If this proves impossible, the winning team is the one with the most players on the pitch at the end of regulation time.

The Avoriaz Snowball Fights are full-on evening events designed to put on a great show, with computerised light displays, a DJ, video filming and more…

There will be five events open to the public over the season, plus others by arrangement for groups.

To get away from their opponents, or to launch a surprise attack, the riders use their weapons of choice, jumps: backflip, 360, double backside rodeo, MC twist, indy grab, cork, rocket air, and more....To record the event for posterity, Avoriaz will be videoing each battle.

CHALET ASTO GETS A MAKEOVER

On the heels of the legendary Hôtel des Dromonts, completely refurbished last year, it is now the turn of one of the very first chalets to be built in the resort (1969) to get a facelift. This work of art by iconic architect Jacques Labro was built in the typical Avoriaz style. Clad entirely in red cedar, with a slate roof in the style of a traditional mountain chalet, Asto typifies the timeless quality of Avoriaz’s architecture, which combines traditional materials with ground-breaking design. With a capacity of 9 guests and featuring a south-facing terrace, the chalet enjoys stunning views in every direction. It is a fine example of the mimetic architectural style that characterises so many of the resort’s buildings, enabling them to blend in with their surroundings so effectively. The chalet entrance is a perfect illustration of this, being accessed through a stone grotto.
