Connect the camera

The controller can be connected to the cameras by the 5 channels using RS232 or RS485. The

cameras assigned to channel 1 can also be connected using the 5-pin Phoenix connector.

Maximum distance

If the camera is closer to the keyboard (less than 20 meters), use the RS232 connection. If the

distance is greater than 20 meters (max 1200m, depending on cable and environmental quality) ,

then use RS485 connection. The RS485 setup needs to be ended with a proper terminator impedance

to extinguish line reflections.

RJ45 channels (CH1-CH5)

The Avonic AV-CON300 comes with a single RS232 connecting cable with RJ45 plug to round head pin

8 plug). With this cable only 1 channel can be connected to the controller. This channel can control

up to 7 (VISCA) or up to 10 (PELCO) cameras.

To control the cameras assigned to the other channels, more RJ45 cables are required. The DIN 8

connector is used for RS232. The RS485 requires only 2 wires and can often be attached to a 2-pin

Phoenix connector at the camera. The RJ45 pin-layout diagram is as follows:

Connecting multiple cameras by RS232

The VISCA protocol supports up to 7 cameras and can be cascaded by connecting RS232-out from

each camera to RS232-in of the following according to the picture:

Page 10: Avonic AV-CON300 PTZ Camera Controller · 2018-03-12 · 1 pc RJ45 to DIN-8 cable for RS232 AV-CON300-DIN Product Overview The Avonic CM-COM300 is an advanced PTZ camera controller

www.avonic.eu 10

Connecting multiple cameras by RS485

To connect multiple cameras by RS485, the cameras need to get attached to a 2-wire twisted pair

bus that is terminated at both ends with a 120 Ω impedance terminator resistor to extinguish line

reflections.

The maximum distance from the bus to the camera or controller is 5 meters
