Avinash Chandra (Simla, 1931 - London, 1981) is now recognized as one of India’s most important modern

artists. Through he had early and noted successes with his work at home, including First Prize at the First National

Art Exhibition in Delhi, and purchase of a painting by the Museum of Modern Art in Delhi (which now owns nearly 30

of his works), Chandra’s desire to explore contemporary painting led him to England.

The period 1960-1962 reveals Chandra at his most accomplished. His unique landscape and figure drawings

became fully realized original statements on eternal themes. The mountainous sub-Himalayan landscape of his

youth, which provided subject matter for his earliest works, became transformed on into cities with mythical spires

beneath multiple stars and suns, and his stark mythical figures seemed to step right out of the new post-war world

order.

During his 15 years abroad, most of which he spent in London, Chandra established an international

reputation. His successful experiments with various media and diverse subject matter were celebrated throughout

England, the Continent, and America. He had over twenty solo shows at leading galleries and obtained several

significant public commissions. Traveling on a Fairfield Fellowship, Chandra worked and exhibited in the United

States from 1967-1973, which included solo gallery shows in New York, Philadelphia, and Chicago.

In 1963 Chandra was included in Documenta 3 in Kassel, and he saw his work begin to be acquired by

important institutions such as the Victoria & Albert Museum. In 1965 Chandra became the first Indian artist to have

a work acquired by the Tate Gallery.
