THROUGH THE GREEN DON SEABLE President’s Commentary The Future Has Arrived There is no question that the Canadian golf world is different than it once was. Consider if you will the consumer trend towards public play, the demographic diversification of the golfer, increased media attention on golf, equipment advances and the emerging role of technology, the evolution from member owned clubs towards private enterprise, environmental responsibilities, legal and tax implications, increased competition, consolidation trends, weather patterns…to name but a few items directly affecting golf course operators. Parallel to these shifting factors, the various golf associations have become moving targets as they adjust to meet the respective needs of their constituents. Although I have been an NGCOA Canada member from the very earliest days back in ’93, as president I have recently become more acutely aware of the NGCOA Canada’s positioning and importance within this changeable landscape. In June, I attended our annual “Staff Attack”, a conference for all NGCOA Canada personnel across the country, and then in July, chaired our NGCOA Canada Summer Board Meeting. Both events were very focussed on meeting the needs of golf course operators and executing the board’s strategic plan on behalf of the membership, now 1320 strong (soon to be 2000 or more). Much was accomplished at these events and both were highly insightful. Our recent focus on growing the game is already paying dividends with the success of our Take A Kid To The Course Week, Get Linked. Play Golf, Spring Into Golf, consumer golf shows, various regional advertising publications, and our role within the Play Golf industry-wide marketing cooperative. These are all critical projects to drive golf rounds played, and all industry players should watch for much more action on this important front. In the realm of cheques and balances for our members, there are some exciting announcements pending with our Golfmax Purchasing Program, which will raise the bar on savings for all NGCOA Canada golf clubs. From the beginning, this program has been a cornerstone of the association’s member benefits and I encourage all golf operators to take full advantage of as many of these supplier agreements as possible. All other NGCOA Canada services continue to expand in benefit to golf operators. The Golf Business Canada Conference & Trade Show is never to be missed (I’ll see you in Montreal this November!), this magazine continues to set new standards and grow its readership, and our regional chapter meetings, various lobbying efforts, market research, the listserv, and other initia- tives further address serious and important factors influencing and affecting your businesses. With our very competent staff team and board of directors, accrued financial resources to execute planned objectives, and strong credibility now established within the industry, it is very clear to me that the NGCOA Canada will provide tremendous value in services and leadership to the industry. So please, get involved, for your own immediate benefit as well as to support our collective efforts. The Future Has Arrived

There is no question that the Canadian golf world is differentthan it once was.

Consider if you will the consumer trend towards publicplay, the demographic diversification of the golfer, increasedmedia attention on golf, equipment advances and the emergingrole of technology, the evolution from member owned clubstowards private enterprise, environmental responsibilities, legaland tax implications, increased competition, consolidationtrends, weather patterns…to name but a few items directlyaffecting golf course operators.

Parallel to these shifting factors, the various golf associations have become moving targets as they adjust tomeet the respective needs of their constituents.

Although I have been an NGCOA Canada member from thevery earliest days back in ’93, as president I have recentlybecome more acutely aware of the NGCOA Canada’s positioningand importance within this changeable landscape.

In June, I attended our annual “Staff Attack”, a conferencefor all NGCOA Canada personnel across the country, and then inJuly, chaired our NGCOA Canada Summer Board Meeting. Bothevents were very focussed on meeting the needs of golf courseoperators and executing the board’s strategic plan on behalf ofthe membership, now 1320 strong (soon to be 2000 or more).Much was accomplished at these events and both were highlyinsightful.

The charming west coast city of Victoria, BC played host tothe NGCOA Canada Board of Directors in July 2005. Thesummer board meeting is the principal occasion bringingtogether representatives of all nine chapters of the associationand allowing for valuable face-to-face presentations, discussion and dialogue.

Two solid days of strategic planning and benchmarkreview made for significant progress – at the core of all strate-gic planning is the association’s focus of maintaining the long-term best interests of golf course operators throughout Canada.

Looking ahead over the next few years several key issueswill remain high priorities. Some of these issues include acontinued focus on growing the game, further enhancementsto national and regional programs, expansion of Canadianresearch and data services as well as further development ofrelationships within the golf industry and media.

The Face of the FutureNGCOA Canada Summer Board Meeting Sets the Stage for Years to Come

With an ever-growing slate of issues and exciting venturesplanned for the future, it is apparent that the growth of theassociation will continue for years to come.

It is indeed a challenging role for the board to harness all these factors and govern accordingly. Member feedback isessential for an informed, productive and effective board ofdirectors, and you are encouraged to communicate with yourchapter board whenever possible. On behalf of the NGCOA Canada staff and membership thank you to the entire board of directors for their ongoing sup-port, perseverance and dedication.

The National Allied Golf Associations has been active of late,on the heels of the industry-led open forum event, The PlayGolf Summit, held last February in Toronto.

The Summit, which saw close to 200 of the Canadian golfindustry’s top players converge to discuss the state of the industryand methodologies to grow the game, was the initial stage of amulti-pronged effort to identify ways in which the numerousgolf associations could collectively and positively impact thefuture health and viability of golf in Canada.

As a follow up to this interactive two-day pow-wow, PlayGolf released a 28-page report which details the feedback andaction plan set forward by the delegates at this groundbreakingevent. The report, which was launched on June 1st, tackleseverything from addressing the changing demographics of

golfers to identifying funding mechanisms to help support theendeavour, and is available online at the Play Golf official website, www.playgolf.org.

Most recently, the Play Golf figureheads (listed in full on thePlay Golf website) also made the decision to contract to an out-side agency to take immediate action on the development of a business plan and begin execution of this massive undertaking tohelp golf grow. Ken Cousineau, Executive Director of theCanadian Golf Superintendents Association and spokesperson forPlay Golf Canada, believes NAGA has selected the person with“the expertise, innovation and passion required to ensure thisendeavour is a success.”

James Cronk, longtime member of the NGCOA Canada, theCanadian PGA and the Canadian Society of Club Managers, VP andgeneral manager of Westwood Plateau Golf Club, and a consummatespeaker and performer at industry events including the Golf BusinessCanada conferences, was selected to spearhead the mission.

Stated Cronk in the press release, “Growing the game is theresponsibility of everyone and I look forward to coordinating andfacilitating the process.” Full details and copies of the report andall press releases can be found online at www.playgolf.org.

This year’s Take A Kid To The CourseWeek program has been the most successful year to date with a leap from275 participating courses in 2004 toclose to 400 courses this year! The resultsare in and with the significant increasein course involvement, this playerdevelopment program has truly proventhat we can make significant inroads to ‘Grow the Game’, as approximately40,000 families came out to coursesacross Canada during the event week ofJuly 4-10. This unprecedented boost hasfar exceeded all expectations and weboth challenge our member courses andproject that this will become a trend for the event in years to come!

Research has shown that to turnfirst-time golfers into golfers for life,each individual should have at leastFIVE on-course experiences, so be sureto try and get your participants outagain to the course, and note thatMUCH can be done at your end to capitalize on this initiative and takethis concept to another level.

As a thriving business in your community, using your existing mediarelationships or forging new ones can beinstrumental to the growth of yourbusiness, junior development and ultimately the game of golf. Advanceplanning and additional creativity canprove very fruitful, and while theNGCOA Canada provides memberswith a multitude of tools to be used,true lasting success requires dedicationand willingness to go the extra milefrom participating courses.

April Tanner, Marketing Specialist forThe City of Calgary’s two municipal golfcourses, McCall Lake Par 3 Golf Courseand Richmond Green Golf Course, hasworked hard to perfect the methods nec-essary to correctly focus on growing thegame and finding the key to participationat the two course operations.

McCall Lake Par 3 assembled andprovided a great experience for 326juniors and Richmond Green experiencedand onslaught of 464 juniors within theone-week event, which is in addition totheir regular focus on family golf. As such,they are exceptional examples of how

Take A Kid To The Course Week can befurther leveraged by taking hold of theprogram and Marketing Tool Kit provid-ed, and merging it with additional inter-nal marketing and promotional efforts.

Prior to and throughout the Take AKid To The Course Week program,McCall Lake Par 3 and Richmond GreenGolf Course used all elements of the elec-tronic tool kit available on www.ngcoa.ca,including the Press Release and Flyer, inaddition to leveraging the physicalMarketing Tool Kit provided to all participating courses a month prior to theevent. Flyers were distributed well before

the commencement of the program atevery tournament, group lesson programand special event on course, and by submitting the press release to variouslocal media, April garnered substantialcoverage in newspapers and on severalradio stations, even managing to arrange a live remote broadcast by Global TV at one of the City owned courses promoting the Take A Kid event and itsmany benefits.

Additional programs and partnershipsat the two courses mirror the dedicationshown during the NGCOA Canada’sgrow the game event. By partnering with

local junior high schools, close to 550 students have had the opportunity to goout to the course with their peers andenjoy a free round of golf and hopefullycontinue to return with family membersand friends. A relationship with a localRotary Service Club with a mandate towork with and support youth sportsdevelopment has enabled economicallychallenged juniors and families theopportunity to take up the game of golfthrough their fundraising efforts, and allfunds raised return to the city courses’Free Golf Subsidy Program. There areseveral of these events at the golf courses

annually, and 3500 deserving families thusfar have been extended invitations. April,the two courses’ staff, and the communityat large have become rightfully proud ofthis exceptional accomplishment.

Golfmax News

In June of 2004, the National Golf CourseOwners Association Canada introduced theGolfmax Purchasing & Savings Statementto its members. Included with their renewalinvoice, the Statement serves as a way formembers to quantify one of the many benefits of belonging to the NGCOA Canada.

The Golfmax Purchasing & SavingsStatements serve multiple purposes forboth the NGCOA Canada and its members.Based on sales reports provided to theassociation by Golfmax Suppliers, thestatements provide another way to auditthe Suppliers’ sales of products and services to NGCOA Canada members, byallowing the members to see, in one place,how much they spend and save withGolfmax Suppliers.

They also offer members the opportunityto see what other potential savings exist fortheir course. By indicating the average savings realized by other courses with thesame number of holes, the personalizedStatement also allows each member to seehow comparable courses are benefitingfrom the various programs.

DDiissttiinnccttiivvee ffoorrmmaattThe Statement is divided into two separatesections. The first area lists the GolfmaxSuppliers currently used by the facility.Broken down by department, GolfmaxSupplier and period, each member can easily see their total purchases and total

savings within a specific period of time. Thetotal savings are based on the discountsnegotiated with each Golfmax Supplier.Members can also see the NGCOA Canada‘Member Average Savings’ which demon-strates how much courses with the samenumber of holes are saving with a specificsupplier.

The second part of the Statement remindsmembers of the additional savings they’denjoy through other Golfmax Suppliers.Since the total potential savings is often in thethousands of dollars, it can easily pay for theannual NGCOA Canada membership fees!

Quebec Chapter

Membership / Board NewsAs of July 1st membership totaled 98 -the chapter fell one golf course short ofattaining its goal of 15 new members in2004-05. The goal for 2005 is also set at15, and personal golf club visits toexplain the benefits of membership willbegin again in the fall.

InitiativesThe Quebec Chapter Board has agreed toimplement a special fundraising projectto support chapter initiatives and theTake a Kid To The Course Week, consistingof selling rounds at member facilitieswith the sale proceeds being reinvestedentirely into the chapter. For 2005, 30golf courses donated rounds, which areposted for sale on www.golfmax.ca.Nineteen members of the QuebecChapter participated for the first time inthe Take a Kid To The Course Week -Thank you to these courses for support-ing junior and family golf development!

Events / MeetingsThe 3rd Annual Golfmax Invitational GolfTournament will take place Tuesday,September 20th at Club de golf LeBalmoral in Morin Heights, Quebec. Theday will begin with a Chapter GeneralMeeting followed by lunch, an afternoonof golf and a sumptuous dinner and auction/prize draw/awards. We anticipatea great turnout again, as the golf tournament is open to all golf courses in Quebec.

Drinking WaterBy now most members will have been incompliance with the more simplifiedDrinking Water requirements from the Ministry of the Environment. Fall legislation is expected to confirm the transition of water testing and monitoring to local public health units.

Pesticide RestrictionsSince the Court of Appeals affirmedToronto’s right to legislate pesticiderestrictions, many municipalities havebegun serious reconsideration of theissue in their area. Check with yourmayor or councilor for pending activity.Ottawa is reviewing the progress of voluntary reductions through education,but concerned councilors are likely topush for further action.

Atlantic Canada

Membership / Board NewsWith approximately 80% of the golfers inAtlantic Canada considered public play-ers, your chapter Advisory Board and theExecutive of the Atlantic Zone of theCPGA have unanimously approved theformation of the Atlantic Public PlayerProgram, a joint initiative designed to“Grow the Game” in Atlantic Canada.Planning is now underway to launch thisprogram in New Brunswick for the 2006golf season. A complete informationpackage is being designed and will beforwarded to all New Brunswick coursesduring the summer.

InitiativesGolf Atlantic Expo 2006 in Halifax, NovaScotia has been tentatively confirmedfor March 24th – 26th. Final negotiationsare taking place with the facility owners.This event will be Atlantic Canada’s oneand only consumer golf show as thepartners wished to continue the verypositive steps from the 2005 show andmake this sole show a must to attend.Specialized packages are being devel-oped for NGCOA Canada members /members of the provincial golf market-ing groups and it is hoped that the mem-bers will give this event their utmostconsideration as it provides YOU theopportunity to meet one on one withyour customers.

Eastern Ontario/Outaouais

Membership / Board NewsManitoba again is in the clutches ofMother Nature as flooding in all areas ofthe province has caused most courses toshut down at least part of most coursesfor several weeks. Last year MB had itscoldest summer on record and ownerswere looking for a solid year with greatweather…Time for Mother Nature to offersome warmth and sunshine!

Events / MeetingsAs a result of flooding the GolfmaxInvitational Tournament is postponedindefinitely for 2005. The tournament wasscheduled for August 8th at the Rat RiverGolf Course. At press time Réal wasputting together a plan to remain closedfor 2005 and renovate in preparation for2006.

Saskatchewan

Membership / Board NewsOver the next several months I will beleaving the SK and MB Chapters as theRegional Director. I have enjoyed workingwithin both of these unique golf businessenvironments and working with friends inthe industry. The past seasons have seentough weather conditions, but the tenacityof the owners shows not only the businesssavvy of our members but their true loveof the business and the game of golf.

InitiativesThe Lung Association of Saskatchewan /NGCOA Canada SK 2005 coupon book havehad a successful year, with sales 400higher than in 2004. With many golfcourses waiting to take part in the 2006,it appears the book is impacting the SKgolfer.

Alberta

Membership / Board NewsSeveral of our board members havebegun to review the expansion of the Cityof Red Deer’s Riverbend Golf Course into a27-hole facility. It is felt expansion willhave a negative impact on privatelyowned golf facilities in the area. With asound business approach, it is hoped thatif golf course expansion is needed in cen-tral Alberta, it will be done by privateenterprise on a fair and competitive playing field.

InitiativesThe AB Hit the Green campaign is in fullswing with proceeds going to the Take AKid To The Course Week campaign for2006. Participation is voluntary and yourjunior league can make up to 20% of rev-enues in support of their own initiatives.

Events / MeetingsThe AB Chapter will be hosting a Northand a South Golfmax Invitational GolfTournament. The South Tournament willbe held at Springbank Links Sept. 27 andthe North Tournament will be held at theColoniale Golf & CC in Beaumont Sept. 21.
