The never-ending perspectivesof AubracAt the heart of the mountainous region of Aveyron, stretching out towards distant horizons, the volcanicplateau of Aubrac unfolds towards the infinite. A magicalland where the changing light dramatically sculpts thelandscape and the rocks, creating an ambiance that is atonce unique and surprising for the visitor. The formercountry of volcanoes is now appeased and is a playing fieldfor numerous outdoor activities, in all seasons.AUBRAC. This is a mythical land and when you first see it,you feel like you already know the area: its Michelinstarredchef, its knives, its cheeses, its cows, aligot,transhumance... it is synonymous with freedom, spaceand purity. You are at the end of the world.
Stronger, faster, higher!Above your heads tower tremnendous cliffs, crownedby great Causses. The even higherin the sky are the sails of paragliders and the flight ofthe vultures. The River Tarn runs past you, carryingkayaks along beneath the tallest viaduct in the world.A craving for space? Just steps from the city, you cantackle France’s most fabulous playgrounds. By foot, bicycle, while in the air, on the cliffs. A tightropewalking act for a town which is probably the mostsporty in France, hosts major sporting events in veryin-trend extreme sports and knows, despite all, how toretain the charm and authenticity of a very long history.
From gorges...to 100 valleysIt is a plateau Highland grove cut by many small valleys(hence its nickname of the land of 100 valleys) and theAveyron and Viaur gorges. An infinitely varied landscape, which includes Ségala, lower Lot Valley and the Bassinde Decazeville, the Gorges de l’Aveyron, the countryViaur, small Causses. In terms of architecture, diversity isequally striking: small built heritage caselles anddovecotes, medieval walled towns, villages and largefarms Ségala fluctuating between Slate and tile bearwitness to the industrial past of the Decazeville basin...

Mountains and lakesThe Lévézou is a vast plateau which covers the centre ofAveyron, between the Tarn and Aveyron gorges at anaverage of 900 metres altitude. A harsh winter climatethat is conducive to predator fishing while the summerweather favours aquatic activities due to the number oflakes. A vast preserved space, which extends out of sight, alternating forests, pastures, hedgerows and smallvalleys with clear flowing waters. In this rural landscape which is like a snapshot of ruralAveyron where the lakes of Lévézou come to nest.
A country of legends...A great and beautiful tradition built this countryand guides men towards their future. Here, for many centuries, the famous Roquefort cheesewas produced and slowly matured in the village’s naturalcellars. So for how long exactly? This is a difficultquestion as human life is closely linked to bovine rearingfrom the earliest ages. Absolute certainty, which serve asproof to the UNESCO world heritage: for 3000 years, together men and sheep roam these lands that they haveslowly wrested from the forests, built, meshed withpaths, farms and villages. See herds of sheep trail acrossthe Larzac plateau as far as the eye can see. This story, that of the Templars Hospitallers, the great religiousorders and local lordships was built around these firstfounding elements which are just as alive today.

Between two worldsImagine a plateau cut by two mighty rivers:that’s the Carladez. In the extreme north of Averyron, it hesitates betweenRouergue and Auvergne, between the Cantal Mounts andthe first southern chestnut groves. Here, the Salers cows are reared as well as Aubrac cowsand people enjoy truffles as much as aligot... and familieswalk together on the Sentiers de l’Imaginaire (paths ofthe imaginary).Three large hydroelectric dams have been built over theTruyère: Sarrans, montézic and Couesque. Thesereservoirs, remarkable in many ways, have made itpossible for the area to offer a diverse range of touristattractions, and develop a famous fishing destination...and they’re also a model of low environmental impact.
The splendourof ConquesAt the north end of Vallonlies Conques, a majorstopping place for pilgrimson the Way of St James. Its old half-timbered housescovered with thackstonehave remained unchangedfor a thousand years. Theystand beside two wonderfulUNESCO World HeritageSites: the RomanesqueAbbey Church and itsTreasure.
The Marcillac Valley...Is a peaceful territory with a difference. Among its redsoils and its limestones plateaus lies the AOC Marcillacvineyard. It is mixed with numerous testimonies to aparticularly rich history: Romanesque churches, picturesque villages and a considerable amount ofchateaus... Perched vineyards, pink houses in the valleys, bursts of pearl from the plateau’s mansions, breathtakingpanoramas... the Valley will seduce you too.
Two thousandyears of historyand a cathedralRodez represents bothwork and power. The power of a cathedralemerged in the depthsof centuries where art, history and vitalitymingle. Firmly anchoredon a rocky outcrop, the capital of theRuthenians still seemsto prevail over the broadAveyron valley and thesurrounding plateaus.Upstream of Rodez, theAveyron river flowsthrough a wide valleydominated by thetopography of theSévérac Causse andthe immense Palangesforest. Here you’ll seeLaissac, a town knownfor its livestock market, the 2nd biggest inFrance. Further alongis Sévérac castle fort, perched on its promontory.

The pays d’OltOlt, was the name of the River Lot before the Frenchlanguage imposed its law on the Occitans. Fortunatelyour language triumphed, at least as far as names areconcerned. Really, don’t you think that Olt sounds better?Separating Aubrac from the rest of the world (well, thesouth side), the Lot crosses the Aveyron from the east tothe west. A lively, powerful river, which has dug deepgorges in the landscape. Upstream, the widest points ofthe valley saw the establishment of towns along theriverbanks that radiate towards the surrounding plateaus.Saint-Geniez d’Olt, Sainte-Eulalie d’Olt, Saint-Côme d’Olt,Espalion, Estaing, Entraygues at the confluence of theTruyere. All have a remarkable architectural heritage, which reflects the rich history of this valley. Not far away, on the Causse Comtal, Bozouls marks thepassage to Haut-Rouergue. Here you’ll find one of themost wonderful natural curiosities in Aveyron: BozoulsCanyon.

The amazingMillau Viaduct
-The magic
of the major sites
Treasuresin every direction
-A “UNESCO”
heritage
A countryof diversityAveyron is a mosaic of natural regions. Each has its own landscape and its own identity, buildings and way of speaking.A few kilometres away, across a valley and aroundthe corner, another world awaits you.The walnut beeches are successors of the beechgroves and the groves to the aridity of limestone. What resemblance is there between an opulentresidence on fertile land of the Valleyand a buron (a stone mountain bothy)?None, apart from character and authenticity.
This eras and landscapes alchemy wasmade possible because the progress ambitionof the Aveyron respects the balance of thingsand the richness of the heritage. With the “Vivre Vrai” (Real Living) as its motto, the Aveyron does not cheat, neitheron the density of its history, nor on the abilityto embrace modernism and make it an assetfor development. Welcome in this rigorousand sweet land, hanging from the clouds, bordered by horizons and verticality.I invite you to walk with us for a while and toshare the privilege of a human-sized region.
Welcome to Aveyron!
It is here that Pierre Soulages finds his major inspiration. And from where, the museum dedicated to himtoday carries the power of French contemporary creation. It is here, in Millau, that the record viaduct takes fullswing to the Mediterranean and superbly illustratesthe moment frozen in time that Aveyron represents.Take the time!
The centuries needed to build the cathedral of Rodez, the abbeys of Conques and Sylvanès, the fort ofVillefranche-de-Rouergue, the high perched villages, the invincible castles and the many Romanesquechurches that found their right place in the landscapes. The time of the seasons that add snow on the fallen leaves, the strong summer light on the Rougiers andthe flower abundance in the spring.
