Dr Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas Starring Jim Carrey, this Christmas-themed movie has an universal appeal. It is about the cynical Grinch who hates Christmas. To ruin the day for everyone in the city of Whoville, the Grinch steals the Christmas trees, ornaments and anything that is remotely associated with Christmas. Eight-year-old Cindy Lou is the only one who has faith in the Grinch, he believes that the spirit of Christmas can change the scrooge.

Home Alone This classic is one of the best family movies of all times. Eight-year-old Kevin McCallister feels ignored by his family and wishes that they would disappear. His wish is granted and he is left alone in his crib while his family travels to Paris. In the meantime, two burglars from the hood are trying to break in but young Kevin does whatever it takes to save the day.

SerendipityThis romantic chick flick revolves around Jonathan and Sara and how fate brings them together. On their first encounter in New York, they discover an instant chemistry but they are already committed to other people. The protagonists leave it up to their fate, believing that if they are destined to be together, they will be reunited again someday. An eccentric and feel good flick, this romcom is about discovering spirited love and believing in one’s soul mate.

Q: Why was there a six-year-long hiatus after the release of the first album? We wanted to discover music in greater depths and mature as musicians before producing a second album.

Q: How would you define the second album? This album is a tribute to the greats who have profoundly inspired our music. We’ve had the privilege of featuring some of them, such as Paban Das Baul and Sam Mills among others. The title itself captures our deepest respect for Satyajit Ray. Instrumentally, the driving force of the album were the khomok, the bass and the dhol.

Q: Which artistes have you featured and on which songs?Upol Islam, words and melody in “Tore Dehke” and “Shobhabe Obhabe;” vocal

harmonies in “Udashi.” Mehraz Alamgir, guitar in our rendition of Fakir Lalon Shah’s “Bolo Shorup.” Idris Rahman, clarinet in “Shobar.” Anusheh Anadil, vocals in “Khacha.” Farhan Samad, guitar in “Obhimane.” Sam Mills, guitar in “Kamar Beta.” Jalal Ahmed, flute and Paban Das Baul, words, melody and vocals in “Podda Nodi.”

Q: Tell us about the stories behind the songs. The first song, “Mon Dashi” is about realising that we are all slaves to the mind and that the outcomes in life are dependent on the choices made. We’ve presented our rendition of Fakir Lalon Shah’s “Bolo Shorup” - an enlightening adaptation of Radha-Krishna chronicles; “Khacha,” which captures the philosophy of body and soul; “Kamar Beta” which is about the dodgy ones,

who feel they can dance their way out of the almighty’s judgment. We also performed original renditions of Paban Das Baul’s “Podda Nodi” and “Udashi,” a song about the invitation to the world of spirituality. “Tore Dekhe” is an original open-ended love ballad. “Shobhabe Obhabe” captures the political crisis and the prevailing corruption in Bangladesh, while “Shobar” embraces the philosophies of Sufism. “Obhimane” sings about the disappointment that comes from enduring the endless waiting to meet the special ‘one.’

Q: As fans of Ajob, what should we look forward to from the band?Apart from the surprise that awaits you in the 11th track of the album, we have some upcoming shows and a whole lot of Ajob coming your way.

This year’s stats for smartphone and tablet apps have been staggering. According to The Guardian website, a tech research firm (Gartner) tracked over 102 billion app downloads across the different online stores. They figured the developers of these apps would make around £15.8 billion by the end of this year. On a day to day basis, we only use a handful of apps that become an integral part of our lives. We’ve given these app makers the success and they’ve returned the favour to us with an app addiction. While we would prefer apps that contribute to our productivity, this year’s biggest draw was the “free-to-play” games. These apps are free to download and play, yet make their money with in-game purchases. The number one culprit of this trend is 2012’s Candy Crush Saga. Its popularity has grown to be a behemoth, and has led other games into the fold. These games became a perfect companion during those delayed meetings or long commutes. But the year wasn’t just about games or pure entertainment.Another trending but low-profile development this year was the growth of children’s apps. While Apple’s App Store is established, the growth of both Android and Windows Phone enabled the developers to assist with children’s education. We used to live in a time where the introduction of the internet was the only learning hub. Now, smartphones and tablets have become an essential educational tool for the current generation. The interactive scene is only going to grow larger. The apps have covered almost every aspect of our lives, including our health. More and more people are becoming health conscious. Tracking your heart rate, calories, sleeping patterns are as important as posting a new Vine video. In other words, it hasn’t been all fun and play. This leads us to wonder what 2014 will have in store for us. Guess away.

well. The thinner, faster iPad Air is at the top of the hill in the tablets category. With a slight alteration, the sleeker design keeps things fresh and makes it worth the buy.A close second is the Nexus 7. Google produced another hit with their newest version of their best tablet. This is more affordable compared to the iPad Air. Even though it’s unable to compete with the specs of Apple’s tablet, it’s regarded as the best valued tablet overall. Since we’re in the vicinity of second place, Samsung’s Galaxy S4 gave the public all that a premium smartphone should have and more. In fact, there was a whole bunch of features buyers had no use for. This only left the door open for the most anticipated gaming console, the Sony PlayStation 4. Its sexy, retro

design (inspired from the PS2), beautiful graphics, smooth as butter interface, and a near perfect controller make the PS4 a winner in the field of consoles. Not to mention, it’s $100 USD cheaper than the new Xbox. However, the library of games is at a minimum so it’s wise to wait a while until you get a PS4 of your own. With that said, 2014 looks brighter for gadget lovers. A happy new year to all. That’s a wrap, folks.

Five best sellers of 2013

It’s time for a year end review of populer top selling gadgets of the year. You usually have two giants taking swings at each other and see who is left standing after 12 rounds. This year the battle was even bigger as the technologically advanced presented one tablet after another. Plenty of smartphones will arrive, but it seems even laptops have received a significant nudge to step aside. But who made it into the top pile? Most gadgets that release later in the year always have an advantage to lead the race. They top the charts like the recently available Google Nexus 5. It’s a smartphone that blew the rest of the unlocked phones out of the water. Not only is it affordable, it boasts a strong performance with high-end specs. This was applied to Apple’s latest tablet as

New car sales worldwide have been booming this year. As of the end of November, over a billion new vehicles were sold all over the world. With the year ending in less than a week, we decided to look back and see what the best selling cars were, globally.

1. Toyota CorollaEven though natural disasters hurt Japanese car makers, the Toyota Corolla remains the best-selling car in the world, with 1.02 million units sold in 2013.2. Hyundai ElantraThe Hyundai Elantra, also known as the Avante in Korea, is closing in on Corolla; 1.01 million of these sweet cakes were sold this year. 3. Wuling SunshineThe Wuling Sunshine, made by a GM joint venture, is the most ubiquitous vehicle in China, used to transport people and goods. About 943,000 of them were sold in 2013.4. Ford Fiesta The new Ford Fiesta, now virtually the same in markets around the world, is part of the U.S. car makers’ “One Ford” global strategy. Ford sold 919,000 of them this year.5. Kia RioThe Kia Rio was recently redesigned for the U.S. and other developed markets, but the sale of its older model sums up to 815,337 in Asia this year.

Rant

2013 has been an eventful year. Although here in Bangladesh most of that happened while we spent half the year indoors; thanks to the amazement that is hartals. We didn’t really start the fire, but we keep fuelling it at a furious pace. Here is what went right and what went wrong although both of those are interchangeable depending on your point of view. In February, a large meteor explodes over the Russian city of Chelyabinsk. This impact injures more than a thousand people and damages many buildings.

Here is the clincher, this happens to be the most powerful meteor to strike Earth in more than a century. Then an American scientist used the magic of a 3D printer to print human DNA coded ear from collagen and animal ear cell cultures. In the future this technology can be used for many other tailor-made medical transplants. Also in February we saw the rather impersonal Benedict XVI resign as Pope, becoming the first to do so since Gregory XII in 1415.March brought the news that long-suffering Hugo Chávez, President of Venezuela died from complications from cancer. We also saw our president Zillur Rahman, 19th President of Bangladesh pass away. April saw the very controversial Margaret Thatcher, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom also pass away. Some days later we heard of the Boston marathon bombings, courtesy of two radicalised brothers from Chechnya. April seems to be the month of disaster, one of the worst industrial accidents in history happened right here

at home, at Rana Plaza on the 24th, the collapsed building left 1,129 dead and 2,500 people injured. In June, came the revelations we all secretly feared. Edward Snowden opened the Pandora’s Box of confidential information about the US government’s mass surveillance programme. People around the world threw their arms up in the air and cried foul. July saw the Egyptian Military showing it’s people who’s the boss by deposing a democratically elected president Mohammed Morsi, resulting in mass protests throughout the country. Then on July 22, Prince George of Cambridge was born to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, literally causing a media pandemonium. Death is never very far away and on August 31, Sir David Frost, the British journalist and broadcaster, famous for his Nixon interview, passed away of a heart attack on a cruise with his family. Finally in October, Bangladesh wins cricket matches with New Zealand

elating the country with joy, only to be disappointed by the contents of a historic conversation between the two opposition leaders and their refusal for any compromise.November saw Typhoon Haiyanone of the strongest tropical cyclones on record, hit the Philippines. The devastation is incomprehensible leaving almost 6,129 people dead. Lastly, December brought the news of Nelson Mandela, the first President of South Africa who was also a Nobel laureate, pass away from a lung infection he contracted from his incarceration at Robben Island. Bangladesh finally saw some justice on December 13 when a war criminal was served his sentence. So there, many a fire-fuelled this year, while we might have successfully made some peace we also lost a lot of great people. As the new year approaches let us take stock of what we are leaving behind and hope the new year will bring with some peace, love and happiness.

We didn’t start the fireAnd so it goes on to 2014 Esha Aurora

When it comes to flirting, there’s no room for cheesy one-liners or any hints of desperation. This is your guide to flirt successfully. First thing is first, you have to ask yourself what exactly is it that you are trying to achieve from this. If it’s just harmless flirting with no ulterior motive, then do what you have to do. But if there is a special someone you wish to charm and call your significant other, read on carefully.

Know thyselfConcentrate on your strengths, work on the weaknesses. Before diving into the deep end, you have to work on your self-esteem and exude confidence. Confidence attracts women but be careful never to go overboard with it and cross the line into arrogance. Your intentions have to be clear before you put on your best game. Know what you want and remember to always respect her. Always behave like a gentleman.

Know herIf you’re looking to build a relationship with this woman, her physical aspects won’t cut it. As drop dead gorgeous she may be, her personality matters most.

Without stepping on toes or crossing boundaries, try and find out what kind of a girl she is. You can always see what kind of person she is by the way she interacts with others. This goes with pretty much everyone. Just because she’s a lady with you doesn’t necessarily mean she’s a lady with others too.

Body languageThe way she looks at you, twirls her hair, bites her lip, these are all signs of interest. But you should also notice when she’s opened the door for you to flirt. Only take that door when the time and place is right. There are certain indicators to spot when she gives you the green light. For example, if she smiles with her teeth showing, consider that a toll free entrance. If her teeth aren’t showing, she’s not too excited to see you or simply is not in the mood. There are tons of other vibes and signs that you may have to look out for.

The next step is the genuine approach to converse, but we’ll save that bit for next week.

Everything you need to know to sweep her off her feet Mahmood Hossain

The art of flirting

Three reasons why your girlfriend is a liarBefore you start playing the blame game for your ladylove’s compulsive lying habits, remember that you could have a major hand to play in this gruesome, breakup worthy habit Natasha RahmanThe ugly green-eyed monsterIf your girlfriend’s a free bird don’t try to cage her in. It won’t keep her from flapping her restless wings. The only difference that would bring is that she will dress as she likes, go to places you despise, and do as she pleases, all under your nose. So don’t blame her when you see receipts of diners in her bag on days that she swore she was home alone.

For the sake of argumentYou may not be cramping her style with your green-eyed monster but revert to a route that’s even worse. In the middle of a gruelling argument, you bring up her history with the string of her ‘ex’ men. Or you tell her how you feel about her nosy parents. These are maybe some of her sorrows that she poured out to you

in confidence, and suddenly now you take a U-turn and slam her face with all her pent up miseries. Not cool!

Super sleuthOh yes! She tells you she’ll be home doing some chores and you are out shooting some pool and checking out women (from a distance, of course.) All of a sudden, she enters the cafe with her clan of girlfriends, hugs you and whispers “surprise” in your ears. If you are being a saint and averting your eyes from the attractive women, you are good. But if you’re caught chatting up a beautiful stranger, expect to win

yourself a one-way-ticket to doom and gloom. Remember - you always have a contribution to your girlfriend’s behaviour.

Organise a BBQ The Westin Expat clubs The Radisson

Let Avenue T help you decide where to be on New Year’s Eve Esha Aurora

Find out what’s hot and happening this NYE

New Year’s Eve in Dhaka is tricky business. Firstly, most of the events are hush-hush, then there is the perpetual worry of security and lastly, where is the best place for you and your friends to be? Granted we generally don’t have many options but within that limited slim pickings there is always a place to be found. The first thing to consider is your budget. When tickets for events sometimes run above a few thousands, they will offer you a generous dinner. That, however,

poses the problem of getting dressed and ready to be out the door before dinner and hanging around a place for more than five hours. Then consider the location. You generally don’t want to stray too far from your vicinity simply because there is an actual security concern. Especially during the pre-election days. So keep that in mind when you plan and chose where to be. We have compiled a list of places you can go and celebrate to usher in the New Year.

The pros: The best thing to do would be to invite all your friends and have a BBQ on the roof. It’s a fun, delicious way to spend the last few hours of the year. Not only you can avoid long winding queues to a place but also decide on what you are going to eat for dinner. Not to mention full control of the playlist, meaning no annoying trance music being blasted into your ears. The cons: You might miss out on the general atmosphere that comes with going to a grand event. You will also be passing up the opportunity to socialise with other people who couldn’t come to your BBQ. You will also miss out on the loud countdown of the final minutes of the year.

The pros: Almost everyone you know might be attending some sort of event there. So the chances of running into friends, acquaintances and familiar faces are high. Since you will be dressed to the nines, you and your friends can post constant selfies and tweets throughout the night and not to mention all the check-ins!The cons: Tickets are expensive. The music is already decided for you, and if techno or Robin Thicke isn’t your cup of tea, then bad luck. You’re just going to have to grind your teeth through the hot mess of a soundtrack that will welcome you into 2014. Also there is the general nuisance of random friends and acquaintances that you are going to have to air-kiss your way through to get there.

The pros: Limited people can enter. On the other hand, the crowd is small; you and your friends can probably hear each other over the music. The food is generally better and the atmosphere is most likely going to be a fun international mix of people. The cons: By limited entry we mean, be warned if you don’t have a friend who is an expat who can acquire a ticket for you and sign you in, consider this option moot. You might also have to hear many expats whine about how they hate the country they’re in and how they find everyone really stupid. If you don’t want to ring in the New Year by starting a fist fight then smile, nod your head and just pretend to listen.

The pros: There is a mythical almost unicorn like event that happens at the Radisson each year. The event is strictly by word of mouth and we hear that people need a reference. If such event really does happen, ask around and see what can be done. We hear it’s the place to be.The cons: Since this is strictly hypothetical, we cannot really offer any advice. Although we hear if you want to get in, be chic, like NYC chic. Whatever it is that you end up doing this NYE, be safe, have fun and don’t make a resolution you cannot keep. Come on, be realistic, you’re not losing 15 pounds in three weeks.

A sure way to stand out at the party of the year

From head to toe, here’s what to wear on New Year’s Eve, gentlemen. What you do need to keep in mind is that apart from major weddings, this has got to be your superstar moment. Remember, you have to feel good, look good, and have a blast.

Top of the headIt’s the end of the year so the chill has already crept in. You could wear a beanie or a classy hat – a fedora – to a party but the moment you step in, it comes off. It is temporary so don’t make a big fuss about it. The hairdo on the other hand, has to be styled the way that looks best on you. Keep things light with hair products, you’ll be sweating things up by the end of the night.

The upper body treatmentDonning one layer after another, it’s all good to keep things warm. To pull off a classy look, cardigans, leather jackets,

and blazers are worn in order. Whichever you choose, adding a tie takes your sophistication level to a desirable zone. If you’ve been following along with Tailored, layering is important. Stay away from chunky and really thick fabrics. Bear in mind you are heading off to a party. There’s eating, drinking, dancing, romancing, you get the idea.

From the waist downBelts? Why not? However, taking a colourful approach is recommended. You can play it safe with the solid brown and black belts, but the woven kind is even better. Dressy jeans and trousers should be a given. You want to have the semi-formal look.

Happy feetYou want to be as comfortable as possible when it comes to shoes and loafers are your best bet. You’ll be doing your best,

terrible Michael Jackson impersonation on the dance floor. In order to do that, your feet need to breathe. You can even rock those designer sneakers that happened to be all the rage this year.

The alternativeIf you are unable to part from your suits, go ahead and put your best suit on. Just leave the tie at home, there’s no need to compete with Barney Stinson. Unless it’s a really posh party you’re headed off to, that is.

For some the year has gone in a flash, for others at a snail’s pace. As usual, style never takes a break and fashion keeps on ticking. Here’s a brief review of what we’ve seen and worn in 2013.

ColoursThe colourful ensembles never left the scene. Regardless the season, men have been able to wear all sorts of colourful combinations for casual and formal wear. There were the traditional pastel variety of spring and summer, while midnight blue and burgundy took the style game by storm as the cooler days strolled in.

Kick itHigh fashion sneakers made their mark this year. The runway had plenty to showcase, and popular sports brands fused their designs with leading designers at high-end labels. In some cases, high quality sneakers became comfortable enough to wear

with suits.

Batter upOne of the best top layers of the year was the leather baseball jacket. The two-toned sporty, sophisticated jackets came in traditional style with modern colours and patterns. If you have one of these in your closet, consider yourself in front of the line for a style award.

Square in your pocketIf you were wearing a suit, the pocket

square was a must have. In many different colours and patterns, there was a pocket square for every kind of suit. It was a classy accessory that couldn’t be passed on. Not only did they come in squares, every once in a while, pocket rounds made an appearance as well. Whatever the shape, this number is a winner and always will be.

The perfect balanceSporting the perfect outfit wasn’t just about putting on any particular item of clothing or accessories. This year was a celebration of a gentleman’s wardrobe. It was a time for the casual to meet the formal. The two met in the middle to create a melange of its own class. The high quality casual items meshed quite well with pricier clothes and accessories. At times, you wouldn’t be able to tell which cost more in an outfit. It all seemed to just fit.

Let’s get thisparty started

Some of the most popular trends of 2013

Q: Hello, I teach a class in a high school and get made fun of by my students about what I wear. I’m a big fan of slim fit jeans and other fitted clothes as they look great on me. How do I tell these kids that it’s actually stylish and not uncool as they would state it?

A: A teacher with style, now that’s something you don’t see often. Kudos. As for the baggy and saggy clothes wearing kids, it’s part of their phase. At that age, the oversized clothing is deemed to be cool and acceptable over anything else. The thing is you’re the teacher, they are the students. What makes them feel secure and comfortable in those baggy clothes is the same as you putting on your classy and cool hat when you walk out the door. The message is clear. Tell them not to worry, they’ll understand when they get older. Tell them to enjoy their youth and that you’ll enjoy your adulthood. Explain to them you understand why their clothing is ill fitted, while you remain in your comfort zone.

Q: I’ve seen plenty of men, both online and in magazines with their suit jacket sleeves rolled up. I understand this is some stylish trend, but I’ve never seen it on the streets or up close on anyone. When does one actually use this look?

A: You’ll see more and more jackets with functional buttons on the sleeves. What you have to understand is that these will mostly be found in casual blazers. It only makes sense to steer clear of the more formal jackets that may have the functional buttons. Given the fabric of the blazer or suit jacket, you’ll tend to find the ones that do sport the rolling sleeves are much more comfortable.

One trend that will last all year and throughout your life is getting the right fit. Regardless the outfit, you should never forget that without the correct fit, you won’t look your best.

Retro wavesThis red carpet worthy style can be achieved at home if you follow these easy steps. Part your hair to one side and divide into sections. Use a medium sized curling iron to curl each section in the direction towards your face. Spray your locks with a fine mist of styling spray when you have achieved the right waves. If your waves appear too tight, run a wide-toothed comb through them to ensure the ideal result.

Simply chicIt’s not necessary to tease your roots and go crazy with heavily sprayed stiff up-dos if you’re already working with gorgeous healthy hair. If you’ve been blessed with naturally lush locks, keep it simple this year. Indulge in an oil treatment at your favourite spa on the last day of the year to enhance your hair’s shine. Follow with a professional blow-dry and you’re good to go.

Hot accessoriesAdd an element of interest to any hairdo with embellishments. Whether you choose studded metallic clips, bejewelled hairpins or an ornate comb, a hint of sparkle in your hair will complete your New Year’s Eve outfit. Part your hair to one side and pull a section away from your face and secure it with the accessory of your choice.

Tousled wavesBig, messy waves were hot in 2013 and a trend that is likely to stick around next year. Apply a volumizing product onto damp hair and separate it into four or six sections, depending on the thickness you are working with. Twist sections with your fingers in the direction away from your face and blast it with a blow-dryer until hair is 90 percent dry. Let the rest air dry on its own and you’re left with textured, beach waves that even Ariel from the Little Mermaid would be envious of.

All tied upWhether it’s a top-knot, braids or a pompadour you pick, stick to modern trends to make sure your hair is the perfect complement to your outfit. Tease your bangs to high heaven and back comb afterwards to achieve a rock star look. Side swept braids and ponytails are still perfect choices for a night out in town. You can even braid a small section of hair that frames your face and let the rest of your tresses flow freely.

2013 Trend round up

No matter what style you choose, make sure you spritz a healthy amount of shine spray onto your tresses for party perfect hair

As the year is about to end, we take you through the hottest trends 2013 had to offer. Pick a look to ensure a fabulous night out in town, ushering in the new year Maya Almuqtadir

EmeraldWe have mentioned this hot shade on numerous accounts this year. Emerald green has been the colour of 2013. We saw it everywhere, from western to local wear to billboards and in advertisements as well. If you haven’t already tried it on, New Year’s Eve is around the corner and you can end the year in green instead of the usual black.

LaceIf green isn’t your thing, lace has been all the rage this year as well. Thinking sexy? Think lace. You are sure to turn heads in a simple lace saree or kameez. If you are worried about exposure with lace, especially the mid section when wearing sarees, have some satin stitched in to the top half part of the saree for some coverage. We know how it can get sometimes with all the wedding feasting and we have got you covered.

LeatherLeather was huge all over the world this year. Since the weather just started to cool down in Dhaka, we have recently noticed women pulling out their leather goods, from jackets to pants to accessories on tops. A bit of leather adds an extra touch of rock chic to any old outfit.

Palazzo pantsA 2013 trend recap would not be complete without mentioning palazzo pants. It is safe to say palazzos have replaced the salwar for most women out there. They are very comfortable and elongate the legs. No matter what size you are, for every fashionista out there, a pair of palazzo is a must-have item to update her wardrobe this season.

Keep these trends in mind when shopping for the perfect outfit to bid farewell to 2013 in style

Use loads of shimmery highlighter on your cheekbones for a healthy glow. Make sure to use a powder formula instead of liquid or cream one.

Lip tricksPrep your lips with a balm so that they are nice and soft when you apply your lipstick. Line your lips so that your colour stays in place and doesn’t bleed. Go for something matt and long-lasting, steering away from lip glosses as they do not hold much lasting power.

Beauty

Prime and concealApply a face primer to your face to give your foundation more staying power. A matt primer is always better if you have oily skin. Conceal those dark circles and blemishes and remember to use an oil-free formula. There are loads of them available that are smudge-proof and stay in place until you wash it off. Use a lid primer before sweeping on your eye shadow. My personal favourite is the one from Urban Decay. Using a primer will ensure that your eye shadow doesn’t crease and will stay put all through the night. It will also make your eye shadow more intense and dramatic.

Set it offApply translucent powder to set your make-up and top with blotting powder

if you have oily skin. This will lend a velvety finish that lasts for hours even if you sweat. Mac’s blotting powder is my all time favourite.

Perfect peepersAvoid kajal that can smudge and smear and opt for a gel or liquid liner instead. If you must use a kohl pencil, do make sure its waterproof. Waterproof mascara is a must. It is more resilient than regular mascara. You can also use a mascara base to your lashes to add thickness and drama. Fake lashes can also be added for an extra oomph.

Get cheekyUse a blush that is soft and light in colour and wont streak in case you break a sweat.

News Year’s Eve is just around the corner and we need cosmetics that have absolute lasting power from start till end. Whatever your plans may be, you want make-up that is smudge and streak-free. Here are some tips to help your make-up last long past the stroke of midnight Navin Ahmed

Q. I want to wear a white dress on New Year’s Eve. Are there any do’s and don’ts when it comes to wearing white?

A. White is a shade you can hardly go wrong with, as it looks stunning on most women. However, we’ve got a few tips and tricks to help you make the most of your dress:

• Choose nude undergarments in the right size when sporting white, to avoid peekaboo lingerie and to ensure a smooth silhouette

• Never pair a white dress with white shoes

• Go wild with pops of colours when it comes to accessorising your dress

• Red lips are hot when paired with white clothing

• Stick to drinking beverages in light shades when wearing white to avoid nasty stains

Entering Cilantro, one is greeted with beautiful mason jars alit from above. In fact the entire restaurant has hanging mason jars casting the whole place aglow. The restaurant reminds you of a quaint little place in New York City. They serve mainly Latin and Mediterranean food with a little bit of Italian here and there. Their menu ranges from Tk120 to Tk795 which is an incredible value for money!

Avenue T presents to you a whole range of their mouthwatering dishes from Spanish tapas to Arabic mezzes. We first tried the Potatoes Bravatas which is a delish mix of potato wedges and salsa atop. This scrumptious sweet and spicy appetiser will keep you licking your fingers for hours! Next there was the Fettuccini Carbonara which was a gigantic plate of pasta with equal measures of thinly-sliced

meat. The sauce tastes just right while the pasta was cooked al dente. We also tried the steak with vegetables and while we are always a little skeptical about how steaks are cooked, we gave it a shot only to be slightly disappointed. It was, in fact, pretty overcooked and rendered itself rather chewy, sadly. Last but not the least, we got our hands on their mezze platter which consists of a wonderful mix of kebabs and hummus.

We ordered this on a whim and found it to be a surprisingly good dish! Cilantro is a wonderful little place hidden in plain sight on Satmasjid Road. Once you’re in there however, it gives you a feeling of being in a completely different world. The service is friendly without being over bearing. Above all, their food speaks for itself; not only is it value for money, it is generous in proportions and equals parts in flavour!

Crash and burn diet for New Year’s

engaging in a fist bump. Now jump and twist your oblique side to side keeping your fists locked in place. Make sure your elbows aren’t drooping down. Do the entire routine twice. Take a breather for two minutes and then move on to strength training workouts. Hold plank for 60 seconds. Take a breather for about 20 seconds. Move on to Navasana: Sit on your mat, back straight and stretch out your legs in front of you. Without bending your knees, raise your legs up to a 45-degree angle. Keep your back straight while you lean back and raise your arms till they are at shoulder level. Inhale and exhale deeply. Relax for 20 seconds. Cobra pose: This is the last exercise of the routine. Lie on your stomach, your palms flat under your shoulder. Raise your upper body drawing your belly button towards your spine and straighten your hands as you come to the full cobra position. Your chest should be up as you tilt your head back keeping your toes pressed to the ground. Hold this for 10 full breaths. If tilting isn’t comfortable, you can keep your head straight and look straight ahead.

1515Take Care

You have next to no time and you need to get that sleek-toned body before the much anticipated New Year’s Eve. Although a diet as such would cramp your body’s natural cycle but hey, it’s New Year’s and you need to look your best for the million pictures you’ll be posing for. Here’s a six day crash and burn diet that will make you shed pounds and still look naturally glowing on the big night

Day 1BreakfastTwo slices of brown bread stuffed with freshly cut cabbage, one carrot, one tomato, ½ a cup tuna and one egg white. Drink a full mug of green tea with ginger and cinnamon. Your sandwich should be oozing with all the stuffing. LunchA mug of green tea, ½ a cup papaya and ½ a cup sardines. Green tea should always be prepared

with cinnamon and ginger. Remove the oil from the sardines if it’s tinned. Dinner½ a cup papaya and ½ a cup cabbage. Having papaya for dinner effectively sheds fat from your stomach. Cabbage intensifies the fat loss. Day 2BreakfastOne orange, one apple and one guava. Lunch½ a cup papaya, one egg white and a mug green tea. Dinner½ a cup papaya and boiled green beans.

Day 3Breakfast½ a cup boiled spinach, one cup of cabbage and one apple.

Lunch½ a cup papaya and a glass of grapefruit juice accompanied with a piece of grilled or boiled chicken breast. DinnerA glass of juice, ½ a cup papaya and a cup of cabbage. After the third day, repeat the three day diet plan starting from day one. In just about six days you should lose almost four kilos. Tips and tricksDo NOT look at the weighing scale and be disappointed if the indicator didn’t make much of a move. The weighing scale isn’t the measure of your weight loss, but your dress size is. Before you start the diet, put on tight leggings and a t-shirt, and take full length side profile and front profile pictures of yourself. Refrain from sucking your stomach in and angling your face in slimmer poses

- it’s cheating. Stand straight and tall and take an honest picture of your body. After you are done with the diet, take a picture again and compare it with the photos taken before; you should be able to spot noticeable changes. If you haven’t lost much weight that just means your body has all that water weight or bone weight. On the other hand, if your jawline is prominent and your stomach loses a substantive pouch then there stands a winner in the mirror! Happy New Year!

Health

Simply dieting won’t carve those beautiful muscles in your body. It needs to sweat, grind and torture itself to attain that voluptuous New-Year’s-ready body. Combine the diet above with this fat blasting and toning workout below and bring out the new you!

Cardio blastThis workout routine is comprised of eight different exercises and you have to do each of them for one minute. You have eight moves. Take a breather of 10 seconds between each move. Push up burpees: With your hands raised above your head jump up and then bring your hands down on the floor. Jump your legs back in a plank. Now bend your arms for a push-up and straighten your arms as you come up to a plank. Jump your legs in so that you are now in a crouching position. Stand up, raise your hands up and jump. That’s one burpee. Go at it hard and fast for a minute. Exhale when you jump up and inhale when you bring your hands down. Legs in and out: Bend your knees slightly. Make sure your knees don’t go beyond your toes. Imagine you are about to sit on a chair so push your hips back and bend your knees. Clasp your hands

and jump your legs out in a wider squat and jump back in to a narrow squat. Mountain climbers: Get onto a plank position. Now bring the right knee in towards the chest and then put your leg back in the plank and bring your left knee in towards your chest. Basically, you are running your knees in and out in a plank. Goblet squat: Grab a pair of 10 pound dumbbells and go down in a low squat, keeping your knees behind your toes; lower your hips as low as you can and stand right back up. Speed skater: Stand tall. Hop to your left and glide your right foot diagonally behind the left leg and bring your right arm across the body and touch the ground while raising your left arm behind your back. Jump now to the right and repeat this exercise on the right side. Split jumps: Go on a low lunge bending both of your front leg and your back leg to a 90-degree angle and then jump and switch legs and come down to a low lunge. Jumping oblique twist: Stand up straight, close your hands in a fist

Having a theme for a party is very important as it makes work simpler and more organised. There are various interesting themes you can opt for this time of the year. A white-themed partyKnowing your crowd is very important. If a large section of your crowd is elderly, it will be wise to stick to a more formal ambience. However, formal does not mean boring. Let white be the dominating colour at your party. White symbolises peace and has an innate subtle appeal. Use white linen tablecloths, curtains and crockery. Light white candles to liven up your party. You can ask your guests to wear something light-coloured. Playing

soft classical music will add to the tranquil environment of the get together. Set the food out on the table and have a large family-styled dinner before welcoming the new year wholeheartedly.

A disco nightIf you want something more young at heart, you can arrange for a party with a DJ for everyone to swing their hips to. Hang a huge disco ball. Ask your friends and family to wear 80s-themed costumes. Opt for light snacks such as fish fingers, chicken balls, maki rolls, doritos accompanied with an interesting range of dips. Do not be a miser when it comes to beverages.

A family get togetherThe hectic pace of modern life makes it difficult to find the right balance between work and family. This New Year’s Eve make an exception and call up all your near and dear ones. Get a projector and put up a slideshow of your families’ fondest memories. Adding authentic food from your hometown to the menu will

Members of Dhaka Tribune and Robi Axiata Limited celebrate the successful completion of the world largest Human Flag formation (Dec 16), with a 27,117 gram cake from in the form of the national flag. surely make it a nostalgia fest for all; for example, if you are from Bogra, you can bring in yoghurt from the local dessert shop. Remember no matter how or what theme you choose to celebrate your New Year’s Eve, you should have a blast. You are bidding farewell to another glorious year, welcoming a new one. Start it on a

pleasant note. At your party, introducing a resolution-themed game can be fun, where everyone is asked to write down their resolutions. After two to three months, you can meet again and discuss if everyone was able to stick to these resolutions to keep track of their progress. Have a wonderful 2014 everyone!

And the clock struck 12Amidst all the fireworks, confetti and disco balls, millions of revellers across the globe celebrate the year end, welcoming the new year with arms wide open. This New Year’s Eve host a party that will be remembered for months to come Tausif Sanzum
