FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK We conclude our celebra on of the Christmas Season this weekend with the Feast of the Bap sm of the Lord. The Infancy Narra ves in the gospels of Ma hew and Luke tell the story of Christ’s birth and provide the general outline of his upbringing in Nazareth under the parental care of Mary and Joseph. But there is very li le detail in the Scriptures about the hidden life of Jesus in his adolescent and young adult years. One can assume that under the tutelage of a carpenter, his foster father Joseph, he supported himself as a cra sman of wood and nails. From the episode of his being “lost” in the Temple at an early age, talking with rabbis and scholars of the Law about the things of God, one can reasonably posit that Jesus con nued that prac ce into adulthood. But there is not much informa on in the New Testament about the life of Christ un l he encounters John the Bap st, and his message of repentance and renewal in prepara on for the coming of the long-awaited Messiah. John’s preaching must have struck a chord in Jesus, for he eventually steps out of rela ve anonymity, submits to bap sm by immersion in the Jordan River and shortly therea er begins his public ministry of proclaiming the kingdom of God. The Church teaches that the sinless Christ had no need of repentance, but his bap sm signi es his solidarity with sinners; and his making holy the waters of bap sm as a means of cleansing us from the stain and power of sin. Today’s readings in the Liturgy of the Word focus our a en on on Jesus responding to God the Father’s call to be a servant of divine jus ce. In the sacred poetry of the prophet Isaiah, God says to His Son: “I have called you for the victory of jus ce, I have grasped you by the hand; I formed you, and set you as a covenant of the people, a light for the na ons, to open the eyes of the blind, to bring out prisoners from con nement, and from the dungeon, those who live in darkness.” In the text from the Acts of the Apostles, St. Peter preaches in the house of Cornelius “that God shows no par ality and proclaims peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all.” In the gospel passage, St. Mark reports that Jesus allowed his kinsman John to bap ze him, thus manifes ng Christ’s iden ty as God’s Son and faithful servant who ul mately would give his life on the Cross as a ransom for many. St. Mark has all the persons of the Trinity present at Jesus’ bap sm: the Holy Spirit descends like a dove and rests upon Christ; and the Father announces from the heavens that Jesus “is my beloved Son with whom I am well pleased.” In the bap smal liturgy of the Church, the Father says the same thing of his newly bap zed sons and daughters. May we all live out our bap smal iden ty as the Father’s adopted children and servants of our Lord Jesus Christ! News and Notes: On this, the Feast of the Bap sm of the Lord, let us remember the connec on between Bap sm and the Eucharist, and how it unites us all as the Body of Christ. According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, “Those who receive the Eucharist are united more closely to Christ. Through it Christ unites them to all the faithful in one body - the Church. Communion renews, strengthens, and deepens this incorpora on into the Church, already achieved by Bap sm. In Bap sm we have been called to form but one body. The Eucharist ful lls this call.” Blessings to you in the week ahead.

If you are visiting our parish, we extend a warm welcome. Please feel free to introduce yourself to the celebrant. If we can be of service to you in any way, please let us know. We look forward to seeing you again.

    Welcome, Deacon Dan Caughey

Deacon Dan Caughey (kay-hee) is a transi onal deacon in his nal year at Pope St. John XXIII Na onal Seminary in Weston. Since September 2020, he has been spending his weekends serving at Ave Maria Parish.

From the small town of Mexico, New York, in the Diocese of Syracuse, Deacon Dan expends a great deal of energy correc ng assump ons that everyone from New York must be city folk. Quite to the contrary, he feels most in his element in rural se ngs and his last home was a log cabin in the woods. He said, “Adjus ng to Boston tra c and local driving styles was a challenge at rst. But I

learned, and perhaps when I return to my home diocese, the back roads will never be the same.”

Dan received his bachelor's degree in geology from Binghamton University and master's degree in educa on from Oswego College. It is there where he met my wife, Mickey, and found that they shared a dedica on for teaching. Mickey taught elementary level, mostly in social studies and with gi ed students, while Dan taught middle school science for 31 years.

He and his wife were married for 25 years, un l her death in 2013. They didn’t have any children, but were foster parents to a total of 18 kids over a 10-year span. Some stayed with them for a few weeks, some for several months, and many s ll keep in touch.

Although Dan is currently a transi onal deacon with the hope of being ordained to the priesthood later this year, he had previously served as a permanent deacon. About a year a er Mickey died, Dan’s pastor asked him to consider the priesthood. At rst, Dan dismissed the idea, but a er some me, prayer, inquiry, a couple of philosophy courses at a Catholic college, guidance from voca on and spiritual directors, and a long applica on process, he entered the seminary in August 2017. His mother, two older brothers, and in-laws are very suppor ve of his decision, and happy that he is pursuing God’s call for the next stage of his life.

Dan seems to nd a happy balance and see God’s hand in all things – whether they be ne food, ne wine, and ne arts, or the simple beauty and awesome majesty of nature.

Deacon Dan wishes that he was able to work more closely and more personally with the parishioners of Ave Maria Parish during his me here, but even with the current COVID-19 restric ons, he says he has been blessed to have had the opportunity to witness and be inspired by his favorite quote from Saint John the Bap st: “He must increase; I must decrease." (John 3:30).

Theme: “I am the living bread come down from heaven”

    Year of the Eucharist

Preparations: The Exodus passage lends itself to a drama c reading that can include di erent members of your family. Beforehand, decide on a few body gestures that can be used during the reading. For example: 1. A gesture of murmuring: hands in the air, looking sad or

angry, swaying to and from (use in v. 2) 2. A gesture of passing the night: eyes closed, hands to side

of face like the typical sleeping gesture (use in v. 13) 3. A gesture of surprise and ques oning. Have your family

members say the words in the Scripture reading, either “What is it?” or “It is manna.” (use in v. 15)

If you choose to do the drama c reading, it would be good to prac ce the gestures with everyone and have a leader besides the reader who can lead the group to do the gestures at the appointed me in the reading.

Also, it may be a good idea to use a visual prop for the manna, which is described as small and round, e.g. co on balls, white poker chips, or paper disks. Of course, we do not know what the daily bread or manna actually looked like. When your child(ren) has his or her eyes closed in v. 13, spread the “manna” where your child(ren) can see. Also, have a basket handy so you can “collect” the manna as you begin your re ec ons.

Introduction: For our December/January CLOW, we are going to hear two Bible stories in which God feeds hungry people. In the rst reading, the Israelites are wandering in the wilderness. They are worried they will not have enough to eat. God provides them with what they need. Each morning, they nd a small round substance they can eat called manna. Today, we do not know what manna looked like exactly or how it tasted. In the Gospel reading, Jesus tells us he is the living bread come down from heaven. Like the manna in the desert which kept the people alive, Jesus is the Bread of Life.

Now we turn to the rst reading. (Have your family members prac ce the gestures if you are doing the drama c reading.) Close your eyes for a minute and imagine you are together in a desert. Open your eyes and listen to the story from the Book of Exodus.

Readings: First Reading: Exodus 16:2-4. 12-15 Gospel Reading: John 6:51-54, 55-57

Reflection: Explore with your child(ren): How do you think the people felt being in the desert? How do you think they felt when they found manna on the ground in the morning?

The people were hungry. They came from a place where they had enough to eat but they were slaves. Now, in their journey to freedom, they were worried. They wondered if they made the wrong choice to leave and go on the trip. God helped them out. God provided them the bread called manna so that they could eat every day. They no longer went hungry and began to trust God.

The manna was great and an important gi from God. In the Gospel reading we learn that Jesus is a great and very important gi from God the Father. Through Jesus, God takes care of us in many ways. Jesus shows us the way to share in the rela onship that God o ers us. We call Jesus the living bread come down from heaven. Through Jesus we learn the way to God the Father.

Conclusion: Conclude by praying the Nicene Creed (www.avemarialynn eld.org/our-faith) and Intercessions together. Intercessions: For all those nourished in this life by the Eucharist, that they may be raised up on the last day. We pray to the Lord.

For the Church, that those who eat and drink the Body and Blood of Christ will strive to overcome divisions, and live in greater unity. We pray to the Lord.

For members of our parish community, gathered by God each Sunday, that in our lives we may hunger for Christ, the living bread from heaven. We pray to the Lord.
