Letter from the CEO
Welcome to the African Private Equity and Venture Capital Association’s (AVCA) 2014/2015 Member Directory. This Member Directory profiles AVCA members who comprise African and global fund managers, investors, foundations, consultants, legal advisers, and other service providers working in and developing the private equity and venture capital industry in Africa.
Private Equity in Africa is at a tipping point. Recent growth in fundraising figures has sparked optimism amongst the global investment community. Our industry is beginning to see an influx of new players from institutional investors exploring Africa for the first time, to established private equity firms increasing their operations on the continent.
For those of us who have been championing private investment in Africa for over a decade, the increased interest into our asset class is reassuring, confirming the great strides we’ve made in educating the wider business community about Africa’s potential to deliver growth and significant returns. Activity within the sector shows no sign of slowing with a record number of transactions recorded over the past five years as revealed in our 2014 African Private Equity Tracker. Deal value is also on the rise, with a number of transactions in 2014 reaching US$500mn and above. These trends re-affirm the opportunities that Africa has to offer within its diverse terrain.
As many of our members engage in international fundraising and investment activities, AVCA provides support through various avenues. Our research, dedicated industry events, education and training, and advocacy initiatives strive to reflect the state of the industry and provide unparalleled insight into the investment landscape.
In our capacity as the dedicated industry body, AVCA continuously and actively engages with stakeholders on a range of matters that influence private equity and venture capital in the continent. Our aim is to showcase private equity in Africa as an exciting opportunity for investors, promoting innovation and enterprise which contributes towards much-needed job creation, skills development and sustainable economic growth.
We look forward to supporting you further and thank you for your contribution.
Michelle Kathryn Essomé Chief Executive Officer AVCA

AFIG Funds is a Dakar based private equity fund management company founded in 2005 by Papa Madiaw Ndiaye. AFIG Funds’ regional presence places it at the heart of its markets, and allows it to identify opportunities in the region while closely monitoring its portfolio companies. AFIG Funds’ maiden fund is the Atlantic Coast Regional Fund with US$122mn in commitments.
AFIG Funds applies the lessons learned from prior experiences in Africa, the Emerging Markets, and Wall Street. Our vision is based on the observation that:
• African entrepreneurs have the potential to be regional “blue chips” when provided with equity capital and best practice advice;
• West and Central Africa regions, and particularly Francophone countries, are attractive targets for PE, especially given improvement in political climate and accelerating regional integration.
To reach these objectives, AFIG Funds has put together a multicultural team with a majority of Africans who have deep local knowledge to uncover attractive proprietary opportunities in the frontier markets of Africa.

African private equity has come of age. More managers are raising more money from more sources than ever before. We believe that the emerging reality is that firms and their capital sources need to be ‘on ground’ to originate and pro-actively add-value, particularly in the SME space.
As an asset class, it is relatively unique – private equity in Africa offers its practitioners and investors a rare opportunity to deliver solid financial returns and a positive economic impact. We are very excited about the evolution of the African private equity industry and we look forward to being an active part of its success.

Pearl Capital Partners is an independent agriculture investment management firm with offices in Kampala and we recently added a new office in Nairobi. We administer portfolio management on behalf of African Agricultural Capital which was established by Gatsby, Rockefeller and Volksvermogen of Belgium to address the “funding gap”–a lack of small business finance holding back a large number of high-potential enterprises in Africa. The social impact and potential returns from addressing this funding gap is most pronounced in agriculture.
We invest between US$250,000 and US$2.5mn in growing agricultural small and/or medium-sized businesses in East Africa, typically using a combination of equity, quasi-equity, equity-related and debt investments; delivering relative to our sector, top quartile financial returns to our investors while creating significant positive social impact on smallholder farmers.
Our latest fund will be invested in around 20 new agricultural businesses and has target return expectations of around 15% annual compounded return; while continuing to meet our demanding social impact criteria.
