History of Green Fluorescent Protein

The first green fluorescing proteins were discovered in 1955 when isolated from the DNA of jellyfish.

This discovery allowed researchers to study the structures and processes of living cells on a molecular level like never before using optical microscopy.

The Use of Green Fluorescent Protein

Initial use of fluorescing proteins was limited only by the technology to read such minute signals. Advances in Lasers, Fiber Optics and Computers in the 1990’s opened the door for advancing medical research using fluorescence spectrometry.

Fluorescent Proteins in Today’s WorldToday, researchers in the lab, medical professionals in practice, and many industry professionals use a variety of fluorescing proteins (FPs). Applications for fluorescence include chemical sensors, fluorescent labeling, biological detectors, fluorescent lighting, dyes, mineralogy and more.

Measuring Fluorescence

Fluorescence takes place when a substance is exposed to radiation of a short wavelength and emits light at a longer wavelength, usually in the visible spectrum.

Fluorescence spectroscopy, or fluorometry, is the measurement of fluorescence using an ultraviolet or other light source to excite the electrons in a sample. The resulting output is measured at a 90° angle from excitation beam.

The Challenge of FluorescenceMeasuring Fluorescence has always posed a challenge for researchers, scientists and engineers. Stray light from the sample, low-light sampling, and even temperature variations can be a source of noise making it difficult to isolate the signal...until now!

Fluorescent Response to Thermal Cycling

BFP and GFP samples were stimulated using an excitation wavelength of 370nm while thermally cycling the samples between 15°C and 55°C.The BFP and GFP samples emitted fluorescent light at 452nm and 510nm respectively.

Effects of Thermal Cycling on BFG FluorescenceThermal cycling, intended to

mimic possible test conditions in the field, demonstrates the stability of the HERO’s measurement capability over a long test cycle. It is possible to observe the inverse relationship of temperature on fluorescent light emission clearly over multiple cycles.

Effects of Thermal Cycling on GFG Fluorescence Again, the HERO delivers

superior data results with ultra-low noise and accuracy over the test duration.Future developments from AvaSoft in straylight control and process customization paired with the HERO system will provide exceptional results in even the most demanding clinical setting.
