AVALON YACHT CLUB

One cf the most unique organizations along the South Jersey coast is the Past Commodores Club of the Avalon Yacht Club. On Saturday, April 23, 1966, the Past Commodores and their wives gathered together in Avalon at the Golden Inn for their Seventh Annual Dinner. This was a pleasant change from the custom of meeting at the Hawaiian Cottage where the annual dinner had been held for a number of years.

Following tradition, Past Commodore Jay Hickman, President of the Club, made all the arrangements for the members to have a luxurious party and stay over night at the Inn. It was a most enjoyable party for those Commodores and their wives who were in attendance. There is a great sense of good fellowship, loyalty and affection that exists among the Commodores, and this is the bond that means so much to all of them.

Immediate Past Commodore, Ralph S. Allsopp, Club which now numbers seventeen active members, ber since 1960 who has not danced the "Hula-Hula".

YOUTH PROGRAMBetty and I would like to welcome you all back to another great

summer at the Avalon Yacht Club. We sincerely feel the program for the youth of the club, with your help and active participation, will be one of the finest on the Jersey Coast.

The staff is made up of six excellent swimming and sailing instructors. Tom Leonard and C. A. Chapman will head the program and be ably assisted by Marilyn Long, Mike Gratch, Pete Neeson and Hope Petersen. This is a fine staff and I feel they will do their share to make your summer a safe and enjoyable one.

As in the past, the mornings will be used for swimming and sailing instruction. In the afternoon we ivill have supervised swimming each day and an Arts and Craft program each Tuesday and Thursday.Of course the practical aspect of sailing and continued advanced instruction will take place each afternoon.

You more experienced sailors will be glad to know that a truly advanced course will be offered this season. The main emphasis of this group will be racing. If you are interested in improving your racing, this is the class for you.

"Sailing Class" races will take place every Wednesday. Each Thursday we will have Sail and Sunfish races with prizes awarded at the end of the year for this new racing; group.

Again, "welcome" and we sincerely hope you all have a very enjoyable summer.

Betty and Dick Shoemaker

SAILING CLASSSailing classes this year will be under the direction of

our very able instructors, C.A. Chapman, P. Neeson and M. Gratch. All of them have been successful sailors and have a great deal of experience and knowledge to pass along to the younger sailor who is interested enough to learn.

Beginners sailing classes will be held as usual this year.In addition, there will be advanced sailing classes which will be conducted separately from the regular beginners class. A very broadcourse of instruction has been planned for the advancement of those who have attended the beginners class.

All of us would like to see a large enrollment in the advanced class, as this is where the Avalon Yacht Club will develop its future championship sailors. We have had many top competition sailors in the past and we hope to have many more in the years ahead.

The Sailing Committee extends its best wishes to all of our sailors for a successful and enjoyable summer.
