PERFORMANCE NOTES

“My Heart Will Go On,” recorded by Canadian singer, Celine Dion, was written to serve as the main theme for James Cameron’s blockbuster film, “Titanic.” The film was based on the true-life account of the famous British ocean liner which sank in 1912 after colliding with an iceberg in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean. The song was released as a single on Dion’s studio album, “Let’s Talk About Love,” as well as on the film’s soundtrack. It became one of the best-selling singles and international hits of all time. It won the 1998 Academy Award for “Best Original Song” as well as a Golden Globe Award for “Best Original Song.” In 1999, the song won the Grammy’s “Record of the Year,” “Song of the Year,” and “Best Song Written Specifically for a Motion Picture or Television.” CHORAL PREPARATION

Singers need to stay aware of the long phrases used throughout the song. Think ahead when singing in order to take deep breaths to sustain the phrase length.

Emphasize the dynamics found in the song to create a meaningful presentation - especially at the key change. “Vulture Magazine” calls this key change “one of the most glorious key changes in recorded music history.”

RANGES

ARRANGERCristi Cary Miller—teacher, composer, clinician and director—presently teaches at Heritage Hall Middle School in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. She has received numerous awards including the Putnam City Teacher of the Year and the OMEA Exemplary Teacher award. She has held the office of Elementary Vice-President and President for the Oklahoma Music Educators Association. A National Board Certified Teacher, Ms. Miller is also a contributing author for the Macmillan McGraw-Hill textbook series, Spotlight on Music, and writes a column for Music Express, a national music magazine.
