FALL 2015
fulfilling the promise
This year’s Autumn’s Promise Dinner & Auction marked the end of our 140th celebration since our founding. The evening started earlier this year so that guests could have more time to enjoy a
cocktail and peruse the wide array of auction and raffle items. The evening also included a special commemorative edition of our program, honoring this year’s Steere House Legacy Award Recipients, The Steere Family, as well as recognizing our Outstanding Steere House Employee, Carmen Garcia with a special presentation by Senator Donna Nesselbush. Steere House wishes to thank everyone who attended and made the night so special.

Milestones
What a year it’s been – one so full of reflection and celebration. Because it’s not often that one can achieve a milestone like 140 years. Yet we did and it’s been a wonderful opportunity to look back on a history full of accomplishment
and challenge. It was also particularly enjoyable to include members of The Steere Family in events like the Annual Meeting and, most recently at our Autumn’s Promise Dinner. Bestowing the Legacy Award to the Family was a great way to show our appreciation for their role in the past and what I hope will be their continued involvement in our future.
Which leads me to my next thought – what does our future hold? While it is a little early for New Year’s resolutions, I know that the entire Steere House Community remains committed to delivering residents and patients the high quality care and life that has been our hallmark. As you’ve seen in our newsletters and mailings throughout the year, we’re excited about the plans we have to enhance services, like our Beauty Salon upgrade, or extend others, like our off-site outings in our new van. Of course, we plan to proceed with our window replacement project and a few other changes are being explored for feasibility and effective execution.
You could say that while we are proud of our history, we don’t take our future for granted. Continuing to be one of the premier healthcare facilities in Rhode Island as we fulfill our promise to those we serve is always our primary concern – one our founders would expect from us.
This year I’ve enjoyed sharing our memories of the past with you and I hope you too will be a part of memories we have yet to create.

Autumn’s Promise marked the fifth occasion that Steere House has bestowed the Legacy Award upon
worthy recipients. As Steere House celebrated our 140th year since our founding that night, we thought it only fitting to take this opportunity to recognize The Steere Family. Randall Steere accepted the award on behalf of the family and more family members filled a table to join in the celebration. In addition to this honor, Steere House is also planning to recognize Board Members Diane Steere Nobles and Tim Reiner, as well as Director of Finance, Dianne Bourget as Association of Fundraising Professionals Partners In Philanthropy, just as Kay Steere was honored in 1997. Steere House appreciates the Family’s participation and ongoing support.
Steere House’s Oscar the Cat was featured in the book, Making Rounds with Oscar – The Extraordinary Gift from an Ordinary Cat, by Dr. David Dosa. The book tells the story of how Oscar is able to provide a touch of comfort to elderly residents and their families who are dealing with end-stage dementia.

Steere House expanded its program for individu-als requiring short lengths-of-stay by establishing a separate and distinct nursing care unit (TCU). Steere House also restored and renovated our 20-year old building with a much-needed face-lift with some capital improvements.

Steere House celebrates 140 years of fulfilling the promise.
6th Annual Rob Carnevale Tournament
Once again, Ann Saccocia and her son, Joe Carnevale hosted the 6th Annual Rob Carnevale Memorial Golf Tournament in memory of Rob Carnevale, their son
and brother as well as a Steere House patient for a short time. Now in its sixth year, the tournament continues to designate a portion of the funds raised to support key initiatives at Steere House. Once again the Tournament was a big success as more
than 65 golfers participated and 25 more joined the evening’s bar-b-q and raffle activities. As a result, Steere House received a $5,600 gift to support the Steere House Beauty Salon initiative. Once again, we thank Ann and Joe for this generous gift and their ongoing efforts on our behalf.
Steere House announced earlier this year that we were planning to create a new Beauty Salon on the 2nd floor. Always a popular place, the Beauty Salon will be moved to expand the current layout to comfortably
accommodate more customers and offer seating for hair and nail services. Evoking a spa feel with new sinks, salon chairs and fun “hairdresser shop” décor, the Salon will be equipped with a space for socializing and a flat screen television for entertainment.
To date, we have raised nearly $25,000. This total reflects funds raised through our Annual Appeal campaign to date, Employee Development Team fundraisers and the Steere House Family Fun Day, as well as proceeds received from the Rob Carnevale Golf Tournament. We are finalizing the design plans and if we are able raise the funds needed this year, we hope to begin renovations in early 2016.
Steere House is pleased to announce that we raised the money needed to purchase a new passenger-life van. Since its arrival
in late spring, the van has been used to take residents on a number of outings this summer, including Iggy’s Doughboy and Chowder House, Foxwoods Casino and now that fall is upon us, to local pumpkin patches. We would like to again thank everyone who made a gift to make this van a reality here at Steere House.
