Issue 531 Autumn Term
The children have certainly come back to school in a buoyant mood following the half term break and I trust that the photographs
which were taken earlier in the week will demonstrate just how pleased they were to be back at school!
The staff and I have had a productive half term break and over the next couple of weeks we will be in a position to inform you of some
of the latest developments we plan to introduce.
The first is the opening of our Pre-Prep library on Mondays and Wednesdays from 15:30—16:00. From Monday 5 November, this will
provide the opportunity for Pre-Prep children and their parents to access the Pre-Prep library (situated outside Mrs Young’s office on
the first floor in the new build), under the guidance of Ms Buchanan, school librarian. The Upper Prep library, in the Whitehouse will
still be open after school as usual throughout the week until 5pm, with Mrs Earnshaw covering for Ms Buchanan on Mondays and
Wednesdays until 16:00.
The second initiative relates to our wish to establish a school-wide emotional well-being service for our pupils. In her capacity as
Deputy Head Pastoral, Mrs Barton, has obtained the services of Miss Hichens who has been working with the Grammar School pupils
over the last academic year and will become Fairfield’s School Counsellor. Miss Hichens will work in tandem with Mrs Barton to
provide emotional support for our pupils across the school. To this end, Miss Hichens has penned the following form of introduction
to you and your children:
I am really excited to be joining Fairfield as the school counsellor and my role is to provide support to anyone who might be finding
things a little difficult at the moment. When things in our lives are tricky it can make us feel sad, worried, or angry. It is really important
to talk about how we feel, as this can help us feel better. Expressing how we feel in counselling can be done in lots of different ways,
such as using different art materials, play, or simply talking!
If you think counselling might be helpful for your child, you can contact Mrs Barton [email protected] or ask your child to post their name in the counselling box, which will be located near the library. There will also be group sessions available over Wednesday lunchtimes, if there are groups of children that would like some time to talk together. I look forward to getting to know you all soon!
Miss Hichens
And finally for those of you who will be celebrating Diwali and relishing the delights of Bonfire Night over the weekend and next week,
I wish you all a safe and enjoyable experience.
On Wednesday, Year 2 travelled back in time to see what life was like for children in Victorian times. They experienced life as a
servant working in the cellars of Beaumanor Hall. After joining in a lesson in the Victorian school room we all decided lessons at
Fairfield are not so bad!

We would also like some of the traditional hamper items, chutney, mincemeat, biscuits etc. I am sure the children will
spot a lovely item to put in the hamper. It doesn’t have to be a food item; a nice luxury item that you would like to
receive in a hamper would be wonderful. Could we ask that no perishable items are included.
I think you will agree the hamper will look great and will hopefully raise a lot of money for the PTA.
If you would like to donate an item, please would you send it in with your child to give to their class teacher by Monday
26 November.
Thank you for your continued support.

IAPS Rugby Tournament - Ratcliffe College
On Wednesday 31 October, the U11 rugby team travelled the short distance to Ratcliffe College. The teams had met earlier in the season with Ratcliffe coming out on top, so this was a great opportunity for the Fairfield team to show how much they had progressed. In a bright start to the game Fairfield ran the ball with purpose and speed and deservedly scored the first try. This unfortunately woke a sleeping giant and Ratcliffe went on to score 4 tries of their own before half time. This did not really reflect how the game was going as Fairfield were much better at keeping their shape and discipline. Ratcliffe scored two more tries at the start of the second half as a result of missed tackles and decision making under pressure. For the remainder of the half, Fairfield played some good attacking rugby with more direct running lines and more accurate handling skills. This resulted in a second try to Fairfield. Once again, Ratcliffe replied with strong ball carrying of their own and they scored the last try just before the final whistle. This made the final score Ratcliffe 7 - Fairfield 2 which was by no means a reflection of the difference in ability between the two sides as it was a far more even contest than the score line suggests. After the match, the boys were then treated to a question and answer session with Lewis Deacon. Mr Deacon retired from professional rugby 4 years ago but he had a very successful playing career with Leicester Tigers and won over 20 England caps. It was inspiring to hear him talk and that with hard work, dedication and determination you can achieve your dreams. Well done to all that played. We look forward to the Leicester Grammar tournament next week and will continue to work hard on making those first up tackles. Mr Pitts
Congratulations to Rosie who, at the East Midlands Dance Festival, won Gold medal for Tap, Gold medal for Lyrical and then became East Midlands juvenile Ballet Champion. Well done Rosie!

Hockey v Foremarke Hall
The girls were very excited to travel to Foremarke Hall, where many of them were due to represent the school for the first time in Year 5. After a swift warm up the girls split into their 2 squads and set up in their formations. The ‘A’ team enjoyed a great deal of possession in the first half of their game which paid off as they entered the second half with a 1 goal lead. The remainder of the match saw Foremarke enjoy more possession, but great support play from the whole team to defend put a stop to the attacks. Some lovely movement by our attacking players and excellent use of the space enabled us to play some great passes and increase the lead by 2 goals. A great team effort by all of the girls.
The ‘B’ team soaked up a great deal of pressure throughout their game and had plenty of opportunities to use their tackling and defending skills. They were so calm in possession and supported each other all over the pitch, working in pairs to win back the ball. We had several counter attacking moves and it was down to one of these and some quick thinking that we were able to slot the ball past the Foremarke goalkeeper and take the lead! I am so pleased with the performance from both teams and the girls were commended for some lovely stick skills and play. Well done girls! Thank you to all the parents who came to support and Mrs Love and Mrs Sutcliffe for umpiring.
‘A’ team 3-0 win
‘B’ team 1-0 win
Mrs Webster
On Wednesday 31 October the U11 ‘A’ and ‘B’ squads travelled to Foremarke to play matches in some lovely autumn sunshine. The girls showed great support in the first instance, as they watched and cheered on the U10 teams. Spurred on by two fantastic results from them, the girls went into their matches determined to put in similar performances. Both teams showed great skill and are really starting to demonstrate their ability to work for each other in order to create opportunities in front of goal but also to track back when possession is lost. I am delighted to report both teams recorded another win and look forward to building on this success in future matches. Good luck to the ‘A’ team who will be back at Foremarke for their annual tournament this coming Saturday; it will allow them further playing time as they prepare for the National Finals later in November. Thanks, as ever, to Mrs Love for her superb umpiring and to all the wonderful parents who came over to support. ‘A’ team 5-3 win ‘B’ team 3-0 win Mrs Sutcliffe.

Dear Parents,
We are constantly aware that Schools may be targeted by fraudulent attempts to divert payments. These attacks are becoming increasingly sophisticated, sometimes impersonating a school email address to send out fake invoices to parents.
Our banking details have not changed and always appear on our fee notes. We would ask all our parents to be careful and to check the account details when making payments. Please be aware that we would never notify you of any changes to our banking details by email. If you are in any doubt, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Should you receive any unexpected or suspicious email request for school payments then please inform us as a matter of urgency. We cannot accept responsibility if you transfer funds to an incorrect account.
With kindest regards,
Mr Earnshaw.
