Distressed couples often get caught up in cycles of reactivityand disconnection. This workshop, based on Dr. Mona Fishbane’sbook of the same name, explores the neurobiological, psycho-dynamic, interpersonal, intergenerational, and culturalprocesses that shape these cycles.

Building on the latest studies from neuroscience and relationshipresearch, and decades of working with couples, Monapresents an integrative approach that empowers couples totransform their interpersonal dynamics. The workshophighlights the tension between knee-jerk reactivity (driven bythe emotional brain) and a more thoughtful ability to chooseto live according to goals and values (powered by the higherbrain).

You will learn interventions that willhelp your couples increase socialand emotional intelligence skills, including emotion regulation, empathy, equality, and respect. The workshop will focus on ways

to help partners become proactive lovers as they work toco-create their relationship together.

The exciting news that neuroplasticity — the ability of thebrain to change — persists through adulthood gives hope tocouples. This workshop offers both seasoned and beginningclinicians ways to facilitate neuroplasticity and relationshipplasticity in couples therapy.

You will learn —• To identify problematic dances of reactivity betweenpartners in a couple

• How to draw the vulnerability cycle with the couple• To identify the neurobiological roots of reactivity in couples• Specific interventions to facilitate relational empowermentin couple therapy

• Skills to increase emotion regulation, empathy, andgenerosity in couple therapy

• Ways to facilitate intimacy between partners, including theskills of repair

She will address familylegacies and loyalties, resentment and blame, cutoffs, differentiation, boundaries, power, guilt, repair, and forgiveness.Gender-based and cultural beliefs that affect intergenerationalrelationships will inform the discussion.

You will learn about the neurobiology underlying reactivitybetween adult children and their parents, along with interven-tions to facilitate the growth of emotional intelligence andrelational empowerment between the generations. Particularattention will be given to helping clients “grow themselves up”in relation to their parents and siblings, and to updatingcurrent relationships with the family of origin. Challenges ofcaring for frail parents as they age will also be considered.

Theory and techniques, with case illustrations, will be offeredto facilitate intergenerational repair, focusing on ways tohonour and care for parents while honouring and caring foroneself.

Dealing effectively with the challengesand crises of life is the core of ourresilience and well-being.Developing flexible and adaptivestrategies for coping with everydaydisappointments and extraordinarydisasters is the heart of anytherapeutic process, and essentialto recovering from any trauma.

Modern neuroscience is discoveringhow the neuroplasticity of thehuman brain allows us to rewire notonly our automatic patterns ofresponse to the disruptive lifeevents inevitable in the humancondition but also our responses to

previously traumatizing events. Research is illuminatingempirically validated tools and techniques from Westernpsychology and Eastern contemplative traditions that cansafely and efficiently rewire dysfunctional coping strategies. These tools can also be used to cultivate positive emotionsand create the “left shift” that counterbalances the brain’snegativity bias and primes the brain for learning and growth.

You will learn to help your clients rewire the inner critic, healtoxic shame, and embark on a path of post-traumatic growth. You will learn interventions that can deepen the self-compas-sion and empathy that will connect your clients to their innerresources and build healthy and nourishing relationships.Through mindful awareness and reflection, you can helpreverse the impact of stress and trauma and allow your clientsto emerge from anxiety, depression, addictions, grief, loneliness, guilt, and shame.

You will learn —• Three mechanisms for changing the brain to install new, more resilient patterns of behaviour into implicit memory

• About body-based tools to regulate automatic survivalresponses and return the body-brain to its natural physio-logical baseline equilibrium

• How to use memory deconsolidation-reconsolidation toheal toxic shame and retire the inner critic

• How to use empathy and attunement to strengthen theexecutive functioning of the prefrontal cortex to buildresilience and recover a client’s inner secure base

• Skills of relational intelligence

In the real world of clinical practice, clinicians increasingly confrontthe limitations of current cognitive-behavioural and psychodynamictechniques in PTSD and/or complex trauma work. Fortunately, a“third wave” of effective approaches to trauma is emerging, allowingclinicians to add new affect regulation, interpersonal, and mindful-ness-compassion models to traditional therapy.

As importantly, clinicians are increasingly discovering the limits ofmedical-model approaches to trauma-related difficulties, and aremoving beyond the need to “fix” or “cure” problems that may not bediseases or disorders in the first place. As it turns out, acceptance, growth, and wisdom — all achievable by the trauma survivor — arenatural complements to symptom reduction techniques, and oftenbring the client to new levels of awareness and appreciation.

This workshop presents the Pain Paradox, an East-West theory oftrauma-related suffering that suggests that the “solution” tounwanted states is not to avoid, suppress, or intellectualize, butrather to carefully engage with, accept, process, and even usepainful material in the context of a compassionate therapeutic envi-ronment.

Building on his books with valued co-authors (Principles of TraumaTherapy and Mindfulness-Oriented Interventions for Trauma), JohnBriere offers new approaches, insights, and perspectives described inhis book-in-progress, The Pain Paradox: Embracing and TranscendingUnwanted Experience on the Way to Well-Being.

You will learn how to —• Implement mindfulness andcompassion approaches tointegrate the painful effectsof trauma into healing

• Reduce self-identificationwith post-traumaticthoughts and feelings

• Use “urge surfing”, “triggerwork”, and “RAINing” to alteridentification with internalstates and processes

• Apply new research ontrauma “reconsolidation” totitrated exposure activities

• Use Buddhist concepts like“dependent arising” toinform compassion andfacilitate the processing of anger

• Apply mindfulness-based breath techniques to facilitate traumaprocessing

• Use your own compassion to help activate the client’s positiveattachment neuro-circuitry and re-process early relational schema

Working with difficult-to-engage clients can be frustrating andchallenging, even for seasoned clinicians. The challenge ofworking with younger clients in therapy can be further com-pounded by their fear of entering therapy, their lack of controlover the decision to attend therapy, their feeling of beingscapegoated for family problems, and their developmentalcapacity, which can make it difficult for them to respond to tra-ditional talk therapy.

The first step in working with hard-to-engage clients is under-standing the reasons underlying what has been called "resis-tance". The second step involves engaging clients in thetherapeutic process. Liana Lowenstein, best-selling author andone of Canada’s foremost presenters on childhood trauma, willoutline the factors that underlie engaging hard-to-reach chil-dren and families. She will present tips, tricks, and techniquesto engage children, adolescents, and parents in therapy andmaximize potential for change. Emphasis will be on play-based, expressive arts techniques for use with preschool,school-aged, and adolescent clients. This will include thera-peutic games, art, music, and stories. Strategies for engagingparents in therapy will be outlined, as will activities for use inchild-focused family therapy sessions.

The techniques will be applied tospecific clinical examples to illustratehow they can build rapport, facilitateopen communication, and help theclient work through treatment goals.

This training will combine aPowerPoint presentation, activitydemonstrations, videos of client ses-sions, and experiential exercises.

You will learn —• About the factors underlying ther-apeutic resistance

• Innovative techniques to facilitaterapport-building with children ofall ages

• Strategies to engage resistant,hard-to-serve parents

• Interventions for clients who arereluctant to verbally articulate their thoughts and feelings

• About activities for child-focused family therapy sessions

Narcissistic clients are notoriously difficult. While often intelligent, charming, and self-confident, they also tend to be highly self-absorbed, arrogant, demanding, condescending, incapable ofempathy, and possessed with a sense of entitlement. The complexitiesof these clients can arouse our curiosity, but treating them canarouse our sense of inadequacy.

This workshop will help you establish a sturdier foothold forempathically holding narcissistic clients accountable and settingnecessary limits. Through empathic curiosity and confrontation, youwill learn how to diffuse distractions such as underlying shame andinsecurity, and disarm the client from shifting into modes (classic“hiding places”) such as detachment, dismissiveness, obnoxiousness, and overcompensating, larger-than-life self-righteousness.Empathic confrontation is a strategy that fortifies access to andmaintenance of meaningful consequences while in therapy. It willhelp you bypass power struggles.

You will acquire a working understanding of schema therapy asapplied to narcissism in order to help you understand your client’slife themes, as well as your own, and how these themes interact intherapy. By gaining a firmer grasp on your own schemas and abetter understanding of the narcissistic client’s makeup, you canovercome obstacles in treating narcissism and maintain the necessaryleverage for healing.

You will learn —• About schema theory andschema mode work asapplied to narcissism andNarcissistic PersonalityDisorders

• Specific clinical strategieswith narcissistic clients

• How to integrate conceptsfrom interpersonal neuro-biology that have been demonstrated to be powerful tools foraccelerating treatment effectiveness

• How to identify your client’s personal schemas and modes thatpresent a major obstacle to treatment

• How to use self-work to bypass intense reactions linked to per-sonal triggers that are activated by the narcissistic client

• How to customize scripts to fortify leverage, to utilize EmpathicConfrontation, and to set limits under a variety of conditions rele-vant to narcissism

Clinicians, teachers, and families areincreasingly challenged by childrenand youth with complex behaviouralissues. As a result, clinicians needdiscriminating skills and toolsto identify the basis of thesecomplexities. Is the behaviour aresult of neuropsychologicallimitations in sensory processing,or a manifestation of social andemotional experiences?Traditionally, models of interventionhave isolated sensory andsocial/emotional factors as separatecontributors of functional perform-ance. However, when viewedholistically, these two features areoften interconnected and overlap asaspects of human behaviour.

This workshop will provide an understanding of the integratedneurobiology of sensory processing and emotional/behav-ioural problems that result in “challenging behaviour”. Through

lecture, problem-solving labs, and videotape analysis, you willlearn where on the integrated sensory-emotional continuumthat sensation and mental health concerns entwine. Thisunderstanding, in turn, will allow for easier and more effectivetreatment planning. Treatment strategies will be specific to thehome and school environment, based upon active analysis ofidentified behavioural concerns brought forward by the group.

This workshop is based upon cutting-edge research thatbridges translational research from the fields of neuroscience, occupational therapy, psychology, and trauma psychiatry.

You will learn —• To identify and discern the neurobiology of challengingbehaviour

• To differentiate between sensory, emotional, and cognitivecomponents of behaviour

• To integrate theories of intervention into a holistic approachto complex behaviours

• How to develop treatment techniques, relationship-buildingtools, and dialoguing skills with complex pediatric clientsand their caregivers
