Looking Back, Looking Forward! The fourth National Eye Health Week will take place on 16th – 22nd September and Galloway’s is committed to using this initiative to promote the importance of eye health and the need for regular sight tests for all. Over 50 per cent of sight loss is avoidable in the UK; 100 people a day start to lose their sight in the UK, but for many people this shouldn't be the case. Throughout National Eye Health Week we are planning to highlight the importance of eye health care in as many places as possible across Lancashire and Sefton. This is a great opportunity to influence the general public to focus on their eye health and ensure they do not lose their sight unnecessarily. If you are able to help us to convey this important message please give us a call. Our Newsletter is currently under review and we aim to introduce a new format to ensure that we keep you in touch with Galloway’s and our the invaluable work with blind and partially sighted people. If you are interested in giving your views on our newsletter please contact us. I would like to take this opportunity to recognise the significant contribution made by Lyn Garside over the last 15 years. Lyn has made the difficult decision to retire at the end of October this year and we are currently making plans to ensure that we continue the marvellous services Lyn developed in her time with Galloway’s. Lyn has achieved many notable successes including our outdoor pursuits programme, shooting group, work with Lancashire College and many other initiatives all focused on providing opportunities otherwise unavailable to visually impaired people. Our thanks and good wishes go to Lyn…and our hope that Lyn will volunteer with us at her leisure! Stuart Clayton, Chief Executive Autumn Update 2013 www.galloways.org.uk Autumn

They have a range of ebooks and audio books, to download free of charge. The size of font can usually be altered on most e book readers and other devices.

Lancashire Libraries have a Home Library Collection Service, in which library staff prepare items for collection by friends and family of people who are unable to visit the library. A delivery service is available for people who don't have anyone to collect the books for them.

All the above services are free to people with a visual impairment.

To find out more, please contact your local library or get in touch with us on 01772 744148.

Galloway’s Team UpdateIn line with the Chief Executive’s strategy to reach more visually impaired people across Lancashire and Sefton, we now have new team members to help make the vision a reality.

Charley Wilkinson has joined us as Head of Services with Annie Ginty and Audrey Gardiner also joining our services team as our new Seeing It My Way Coordinators for Central Lancashire. We have a new temporary colleague in our Morecambe office, Terry Myles, and we will be recruiting permanent staff there soon.

Talking NewspapersGalloway’s Talking News Service provides listeners with a wide range of news and magazine programmes in an accessible audio format. We provide the service on CD or Audio plug and it is free of charge.

If you require a player we can also provide one on loan. For further information give us a call 01772 744148

Tech UpdateNew Apps: There are two new phone Apps that can be downloaded for iphones. ‘Blind Square’ which is a navigational App, similar to a Sat Nav but for pedestrians and ‘Taptap See’ an App that describes a picture that you are about to take on your phone.

Word documents: If when using a computer you find it difficult scrolling sideways when using a high zoom level in Page Layout view then switch to Web Layout. It word wraps all text to the screen width even with high zoom levels, leaving you to scroll downwards in the usual way. In Word you will find Web Layout by clicking on View then the Document View and choose Web Layout. If using Open Office then just bring the View Menu down and choose Web Layout. In either word processor it is easy to get back to Page Layout afterwards to check what it looks like before printing.

Android software: SYNAPPTIC now do a combined package for the grand sum of £199, which includes a suitable Android Phone and the SYNAPPTIC software to make it simpler and easier to see. This price breakthrough was discovered at the Galloway’s Exhibition in Preston at the beginning of May. This may not have as many bells and whistles as the other phones and tablet packages they sell but it is a keen price when the software is £190 on its own.

Changes to funding for the National Talking Book ServiceLancashire County Council has said that due to budget constraints there are to be some changes to the funding of the RNIB Talking Book Service.

Their budget constraints mean that they will limit how many subscriptions they can provide at any one time and when this threshold is reached they will consider putting a customer's name on a waiting list until a subscription is available for them.

Lancashire Libraries also have books in large print and audio books and music on CD. Playways, which offer immediate access to audio content on pre-loaded players, are also available.

What’s On: ChorleyWe always welcome clients to our center on Farrington Street to talk over any concerns they or their families have about living with sight loss. Personal appointments are recommended. Please call 01257 275160 to book one.

Monday 16th September: Come and join us for the start of National Eye Health Week. The centre will be holding an open day from 11am-3pm.

Regular Monday Events: We are holding regular Braille and IT sessions led by Judith Daniels. We also have appointments for Eccentric Viewing which helps maximise the best areas of functioning retina by stimulating peripheral vision and using techniques such as steady eye strategy.

Bargain EquipmentWe have many second user pieces of equipment, too many to list here, but one particular item is a talking combination microwave oven, like new, hardly used and just out of guarantee. Cost new is £285, but the sale cost is £150. For further details get in touch on 01772 744148.

Goodbye Lyn!In 1999 my life changed, I joined Galloway’s as an activities co coordinator, the job has taken me along many paths that I thought I would never travel.Climbing abseiling ,skydiving, holidaying with 40+ people, daytrips, shooting, driving days, planning adult education courses in many subjects ,the list is endless.

It has been a great experience seeing people’s lives change from isolation, depression into confidence, friendship and independence. I leave with many lovely memories of some wonderful character’s and many funny stories. I thank everyone who has supported me from the staff past and present and all service users, I am saying Goodbye, but I am sure I will be around as a volunteer sometime. Lyn Garside

Bargain EquipmentWe have many second user pieces of equipment, too many to list here, but one particular item is a talking combination microwave oven, like new, hardly used and just out of guarantee. Cost new is £285, but the sale cost is £150. For further details get in touch on 01772 744148.
