A MESSAGE FROM THE MINISTER FOR HIGHER EDUCATION AND SKILLSWelcome to the CAE 2014 Autumn Guide.

With on-going changes to Australia’s economic and industrial landscape, understanding the skill level required to ensure a job ready workforce is essential to Victoria’s success, both nationally and internationally. The ability to develop and maintain a highly skilled work force is integral to meeting this need; skills training and support are essential. The Victorian Government recognises this and is committed to delivering a robust and sustainable education and training system for Victoria.

The Learn Local adult and community education sector plays a major part in delivering a skilled workforce for Victoria and indeed, Australia. The sector has proved successful in helping learners increase their employment potential, enhance their personal wellbeing, and deliver community connectedness – a significant contribution to the strength of the whole community.

With the launch of the Learn Local: Focusing on the Future strategy, which includes a record $14 million in pre-accredited training, along with measures to improve digital literacy across the state, Victoria is an excellent place to be a learner. As one of the state’s largest adult education providers, CAE has extensive experience in delivering quality education services to Melbourne’s adult learners. Ukulele with Dean DenhamIt’s impossible to be sad when you are around a Ukulele, so says Dean Denham, director of M.U.K the iconic, Melbourne Ukulele Kollective; formed 10 years ago to provide a vehicle for playing, performing and teaching. Dean was initially drawn to the ukulele when an elderly uncle offered him his battered instrument. Soon Denham was playing at pub open-microphone nights and putting up posters in Fitzroy, Collingwood and Brunswick shop fronts, calling for members for a new ukulele group - and slowly the Melbourne Ukulele Kollective was born.

Dean readily admits that the little instrument has come a long way from its Hawaiian origin, now featuring in pop, country, folk and indie-rock music.

A Brief History of the Black SeaThe Black Sea was a busy waterway in the ancient world, a crossroads between Europe and Asia, sailed by Jason and the Argonauts, disputed for centuries by the empires that arose on its shores. Following the Crimean War it became an Ottoman lake, then slowly European navies gained access and expanded trade via the Bosporus. A significant naval theatre during World War One, the Black Sea also saw naval and associated land battles in World War Two. Since then trade and economic pacts have helped develop the whole region. These lectures with Ed Weiss are designed to give a basic history of this important but historically neglected area.
