In the South East region of Spain, the subtropical Mediterranean climate provides an excellent environment for agriculture. With over 300 days of sunshine a year, the fertile plains of Murcia are rich with crops of fruit and vegetables, along with a wide selection of aromatic plants. It is here that Esencias Martinez Lozano grow and produce their outstanding Certified Organic Cypress essential oil.
Sydney Essential Oil Co. is proud to be the official distributor of Esencias Martinez Lozano’s extensive range of Certified Organic and Conventional essential oils in Australia and Asia-Pacific.
Cypress and the MediterraneanCupressus sempervirens originates from Eastern Mediterranean countries such as Greece, Turkey, Cyprus and Lebanon. As a plant species it is very robust and when grown wild, trees are believed to live for centuries. In Greek mythology, it is said that the god Apollo loved a young boy called Cyparissus and gave him a deer as a companion. When Cyparissus accidently killed the deer, his grief was so overwhelming Apollo turned him into the tall, dark green Cypress tree. This tree became a symbol of sorrow and mourning and was commonly planted in cemeteries and burial grounds throughout the Mediterranean. In Turkey’s historic Karaca Ahmet Cemetery, Cypress trees tower over ancient graves that date all the way back to the 1500’s.
Whilst much of the species’ history is somewhat solemn, it was also recognised for its effective medicinal uses. Offering relief from bronchial conditions and also helping to balance perspiration levels.
Wood from the Cypress tree was often used for construction and furniture as it is strong and durable. History notes that the original doors of St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome were made from Cypress and that they lasted more than 1,100 years.
Today, plantations of Cypress are found throughout the world, in countries with similar dry climatic conditions such as South Africa and Australia, as its popularity across industries rarely decreases. >
Opposite clockwise from top left: Long rows of Cypress trees cover the plantation in Murcia. Mechanical harvesting removes only the top branches of the tree. This allows the plant to regenerate and continues the cycle for many seasons to come. Abundant sunlight plays an important part in the growth cycle of the trees. Plant material is collected in large containers to allow for easy transportation to the steam distillation facility.

Esencias Martinez LozanoEsencias Martinez Lozano (Lozano) has been producing some of the finest essential oils in Spain since 1960. The company was founded by Antonio Martinez Lozano who had experience working with aromatic plants suited to the semi-arid landscape of Caravaca de la Cruz in Murcia.
Starting out with a small plantation the company has now grown to supply a vast selection of Certified Organic and conventional products. Over fifty years later, Antonio still works on the land, but is now joined by his two sons who manage the production, quality and commercial divisions of the business.
With export attributing for over 80% of their annual turnover, they have a great understanding of the importance of international certifications. In 2004 the company obtained the European 834/2007 Certification for organic farming and in 2006 strengthened their organic profile by achieving NOP.
Their thorough understanding of the international market saw them also invest in ISO 9001 Certification in 2011 and Kosher Certification in 2012 from KLBD in London. With such extensive achievements the company continues to develop its global appeal.
Cypress Cultivation and Essential Oil ProductionWhen the Lozano plantation was first established, young, locally sourced Cypress trees were planted in long narrow rows. The tree’s evergreen foliage grows in a compact formation which allows each plant to develop unhindered.
Initial harvesting occurs after 4-5 years and continues annually for the life of the plant. The hardy species is drought resistant and does not require overly fertile soil, making it relatively easy to maintain. During dry seasons there is the need for some irrigation and well-drained soil provides optimal conditions.
Harvest occurs during the Spanish winter season and depending on rainfall, can continue into spring. Mechanical harvesting machinery is utilised to remove the sprouts and young branches >

from the top of the tree. There is no requirement for a crop rotation program as well-maintained trees can live for decades.
All harvested plant material is transported to Lozano’s certified processing facility. The Cypress cuttings are steam distilled through large vessels and once extracted, the essential oil is filtered to ensure purity. It takes approximately 70-80 kilograms of plant material to produce 1 kilogram of the herbaceous essential oil. The discarded plant matter is utilised for generating vapour in their biomass distillery ensuring there is no waste from the sustainable production cycle.
Benefits of Cypress Essential OilThe essential oil’s clear, woody aroma has a hint of spice that makes it extremely appealing for perfumery formulations, particularly in men’s aftershave products. It resonates as a middle to base note in blends and is complimented by citruses or other aromatic family oils such as pine, clary sage and juniper.
Aromatherapeutically, the oil is often used to help minimise varicose veins as it possesses exceptional vasoconstriction properties. It also has a strong influence over bodily fluids and can assist in treating a range of conditions such as nose bleeds, irregular or heavy menstruation and excessive perspiration.
Cypress is known to provide a calming and balancing effect on people suffering from highly emotional states or experiencing stress or anxiety. It can help soothe tension and ease the nerves.
In massage, it may help alleviate muscular aches and pains and can ease some symptoms associated with arthritis and rheumatism. It also offers diuretic properties that can help reduce fluid retention.
A key cosmetic benefit that Cypress oil will exhibit in a natural cosmetic formulation is its toning and balancing effect on the skin. It is known to be helpful for mature skin types as it helps to minimise moisture loss and can improve the overall complexion. It is also recognised for its astringent effect which makes it ideal for oily skin to help remove congestion and leave the skin feeling bright and clean. These traits make it a perfect addition to facial cleanser or moisturiser formulation for both men and women. 1
