It means so much to children like Tali, a girl with cortical blindness, who cannot interpret what she sees. She tends to be withdrawn and makes no effort to look at things. She also avoids moving. Yet it is magical to see how in the Snoezelen room she notices the lights and perks up. She sees and feels a whole new world.

In this Rosh Hashanah edition, we have chosen to highlight Snoezelen (multi-sensory environment), not only for its beauty and its very special therapeutic value, but also for the broad impact it has had throughout Israel, as well as in countries such as Denmark, South Africa and the USA.

Over 20 years ago a talented occupational therapist, Dr Michele Shapiro, joined the Beit Issie Shapiro professional team and began working with our children. To her dismay, Michelle felt that existing therapeutic interventions were not adequate enough to meet the needs of our special children. Being tenacious by nature, she decided to investigate alternatives and, together with Founding President Naomi Stuchiner, established the first Snoezelen room in Israel – and the rest is history.

Today, Beit Issie Shapiro is a world leader in the field of Snoezelen, initiating groundbreaking research, training locally and overseas, and discovering new and innovative ways of using this therapeutic concept.

We invite you to plan a visit to Beit Issie Shapiro in the coming year – please let us know when you are coming and we will make sure that you too will enjoy the wonders of the Snoezelen center during your visit.

Thank you for partnering us in so many of our ventures. Happy New Year to you all from the children and staff of Beit Issie Shapiro.

Sincerely,

Jean JudesExecutive Director

Dear Friends,

When I walk through the colorful hallways of Beit Issie Shapiro, hear the laughter from the classrooms and look into the eyes of our children, I feel a surge of happiness. I am so proud of all the “firsts” that continue to take place within these walls and see that we are truly making an enormous difference. One of our pioneering “firsts” was the creation of Snoezelen in Israel.

In Israel, some 320,000 (approximately 9%) of children ages 0-19 live with a disability. One billion people (or 15% of the world’s population) live with a disability.

Many of those with developmental disabilities, such as autism, have severe sensory difficulties: they feel sensations more intensely, less intensely, or not at all.

In Holland, Snoezelen was being used for adults with disabilities only as recreation. Beit Issie Shapiro got innovative, developing the first Snoezelen-MSE Israel in 1993 – a magical world of sensory calm and exploration in the therapeutic treatment of children with developmental disabilities.

Research confirmed the effectiveness of Beit Issie Shapiro’s new Snoezelen-MSE approach. Snoezelen-MSE is now a recognized approach by several Israeli government ministries.

Today, there are over 400 Snoezelen rooms throughout Israel and over 3,000 Snoezelen therapists trained globally by Beit Issie Shapiro.

Beit Issie Shapiro has pioneered two key Snoezelen adaptations:• in Hydrotherapy, creating a revolutionary “Hydro-Snoez” combination that enhances

the effects of hydrotherapy• in our Dental Clinic, significantly reducing dental anxiety for children with developmental

disabilities, particularly in autistic children

Today, people worldwide benefit from Beit Issie Shapiro’s innovations. Beit Issie Shapiro shares and exports its Snoezelen-MSE knowledge and expertise globally.

The Snoezelen StoryHow Beit Issie Shapiro pioneered Multi-Sensory Environment (MSE) to benefit children with developmental disabilities and improve their quality of life.

If you have ever seen a Snoezelen room at Beit Issie Shapiro, you will know that the lights are captivating, the sounds are soothing and the environment is enticing. With the backing of the Wolfson Family Charitable Foundation, Beit Issie Shapiro brought the Snoezelen approach to Israel, and pioneered this special multi-sensory environment for therapeutic treatment of children with developmental disabilities. Thanks to Harvey and Gloria Kaylie and the Lorraine White Foundation, Beit Issie Shapiro’s Snoezelen model has become the international leader of research and training in this field.

We interviewed Dr. Michele Shapiro, occupational therapist and Beit Issie Shapiro’s former Director of the Multi-Sensory Center, who made the ground-breaking discovery of this application of Snoezelen.

What does the word “Snoezelen” mean?“It is a combination of two Dutch words: snufflen – to sniff, and doezelen – to doze. The essence of this special environment is sensory-based (to investigate your surroundings like a dog sniffing its way to find something special), while at the same time relaxing and absorbing the special effects.”

Pioneering SnoezelenWhat makes Snoezelen special?“While the physical environment is suited to the individual’s needs – offering him/her the right amount of color, sound, touch, etc. – the attitude of the therapist is to empower. It is the child who leads the way. Over the years, we have seen children feeling calmer, more in control of their environment, more able to concentrate. And because of this we have seen them learn new skills while having such fun.”

What are the benefits of Snoezelen for children with intellectual disabilities?“My initial research, in collaboration with the Hebrew University’s School of Occupational Therapy, showed dramatic results. Children with developmental disabilities who were hyperactive showed reduced heart rate, while children with developmental disabilities who were passive showed increased heart rate. This breakthrough enabled significant positive changes in adaptive behaviors in daily life.”

Does Beit Issie Shapiro share its Snoezelen expertise with others?“Many people take an interest in setting up a Snoezelen room; however, the room does nothing if staff are not trained. Beit Issie Shapiro consults throughout Israel and globally, helping professionals to build a new Snoezelen room, training to use an existing Snoezelen room, and training to implement certain elements of the Snoezelen into existing spaces as an effective treatment for children with disabilities.”

Can Snoezelen be applied to other fields?“Over the years, Beit Issie Shapiro adapted Snoezelen to other treatment areas, namely Beit Issie Shapiro’s Dental Clinic and Hydrotherapy Center. Today, Snoezelen is also being used in therapeutic centers, hospitals and schools to treat people with a wide range of sensory and cognitive difficulties, and even people with dementia, cancer, cystic fibrosis and mental illness, as well as burn victims. We have witnessed many emotional scenes in the Snoezelen room: There was the woman with autism who said, ‘This place must have been built just for me!’, as well as the elderly man who had not spoken for years. He went into the Snoezelen with his caregiver and his wife. The wife’s phone rang, and she answered. It was their son calling from the USA. The elderly man took the phone from his wife and said, ‘Hello, my boy!’ That says it all!”

Pioneering SnoezelenCare Without Borders: A Mother’s Letter

Philip is 18 months old and lives in Bulgaria. After being diagnosed with cerebral palsy, his mother Eva brought him to Beit Issie Shapiro for a month-long specialized treatment program.

“In Bulgaria, there are no services for children with disabilities. As we searched for options abroad, our neurologist told us that Beit Issie Shapiro was the best place to go.

Philip’s progress is amazing. Thanks to the therapy he receives at Beit Issie Shapiro, his back is stronger, he can support himself with two hands, and he has found new ways to move overall. Thanks particularly to Snoezelen, he has even discovered new feelings. His senses are stimulated – his eyes, his hands, his ears – and he is getting to know the world around him. He is truly happy.

As a parent of a child with a disability, at Beit Issie Shapiro I have learned that life can go on, and we can find new possibilities. At Beit Issie Shapiro, we can really see the difference.”

The bright lights, sounds of the drill, and touch in and around the child’s mouth can be extremely distressful – even traumatic – especially for children with heightened sensory sensitivity, like those with autism. Is general anesthesia, sedation or restraint – to carry out even the simplest of checks – the only solution?

Enter Beit Issie Shapiro’s Sensory Adapted (“Snoezeled”) Dental Environment: dimmed lighting, soothing music, and a special velcro butterfly vest that hugs the child and provides them with calming, deep pressure sensations.

“At a dental clinic for people with disabilities, most treatments seem impossible. The path of a child or adult with disabilities is paved with obstacles, so every achievement is significant. Adapting the dental environment enables our patients to amass achievements and develop a positive attitude towards the dental care and oral health they so direly need,” says Dental Clinic Director, Anat Baniel.

Our academic study on the Sensory Adapted Dental Environment showed that this safe solution significantly reduces the level of anxiety among children during dental treatment. Today, we are advising the University of Southern California and Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles on replicating the research amongst children on the autism spectrum.

The Naomi and Shimon Ditkovsky Dental Clinic at Beit Issie Shapiro has been operating since 1989, the first and only non-hospital, non-institutional provider of comprehensive oral health and dental treatment services for children and adults with disabilities.

Making the Impossible PossibleMaya is a young girl with moderate intellectual disabilities, who rarely had her teeth checked by a dentist. As a result, she began suffering from severe pain in her mouth. It became clear that major surgery would be required under anesthesia. Her parents tried to arrange an appointment in the dental clinic of a Tel Aviv hospital, but they were only offered a date a year hence.

At Beit Issie Shapiro’s Dental Clinic a dentist saw her immediately. A month later, Maya was pain-free. Her father, who accompanies her to her appointments, said: “Maya was extremely anxious when she first came to the clinic, but has become very relaxed with the special lighting and music. She has learned that going to the dentist can be a far more positive experience than she ever anticipated.”

A New Quality of LifeLiora is a 12-year-old girl with Rett syndrome. She had received hydrotherapy treatments in the past, but her reaction to entering the water was so bad, that her therapist had to stop. We decided to try treatment in our Hydro-Snoez pool. As the therapist carried Liora into the water, she showed clear signs of anxiety and fear – crying and screaming. We used very soft lighting and quiet songs in order to calm her down. Very slowly, she started making eye contact and her muscle tone relaxed. By the end of her first session, she was ready to float on her stomach, blow bubbles, and even smile. Today, five years later, Liora dives underwater and floats with support. She even walks in the shallow water by herself, unleashing a whole new quality of life for her and her family.

Snoezelenin the Water

“These days, medical and rehabilitation experts realize what has been known for many years – that water has a unique, positive and significant influence on people’s health and well-being,” says Ilanit Weigenfeld-Lahav, Director of Beit Issie Shapiro’s Hydrotherapy Center.

By utilizing our years of experience and knowledge of the unique characteristics of both hydrotherapy and Snoezelen, the team at Beit Issie Shapiro created “Hydro-Snoez”, a revolutionary model that combines the two therapeutic approaches. “By adding the multi-sensory elements, we can further harness our clients’ strengths and help them attain maximum functioning,” says Weigenfeld-Lahav.

This unique pool includes elements from the Snoezelen room, such as soft lights, background and underwater music, and the “enabling therapist” approach, which lets the client explore and lead the treatment. For those who have no other alternative, only this kind of adapted environment can impact them positively for the rest of their lives. The Williams Island Therapeutic Swimming and Recreation Center opened at Beit Issie Shapiro in 1992 and is the first and largest training center in Israel, providing hydrotherapy for people of all ages in a state-of-the-art, fully adapted, temperature-controlled environment.

AMERICAN FRIENDS OF BEIT ISSIE SHAPIRO MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Cycles for Smiles Rides into Florida

Students at the Jewish Cooperative School enjoyed a Cycle for Smiles event to raise money for their friends at Beit Issie Shapiro, as part of the school’s Yom Ha’atzmaut celebration. They learned about Beit Issie Shapiro, got sponsors, and went to their friend’s house to ride. Thanks to all the participants, as well as Nicola Trump and the school’s staff and supporters – together they raised over $1,000. The kids all had a blast while raising tzedakah!

New Additions to our American Friends in NYC and LAWe are pleased to welcome two new additions to the

American Friends of Beit Issie Shapiro’s professional team:

Bill Edelstein joined our American Friends as Greater New York Development Director. Bill has more than 10 years of fundraising experience, primarily working in major donor fundraising, individual giving, and event planning.

Prior to our American Friends, Bill worked at several other internationally focused non-profit organizations that provided healthcare to children and marginalized populations globally. Bill has a Master’s degree in International Relations from the University of Colorado at Boulder, where he focused on Israeli politics and conflict resolution.

“I am delighted to be a part of such an innovative and impactful organization and I look forward to working closely with both existing and prospective donors in the New York City area.”

Bella Simon Cayne joined our American Friends as the Western Region Development Director. Bella has more than 17 years of fundraising experience, working for the American Committee for the Weizmann Institute of Science, involving major donor fundraising, planned giving, individual giving, and event planning. Bella also has nine years of experience as co-owner of a major event planning organization in Beverly Hills.

Bella’s first priorities will be to acquaint herself with our existing Beit Issie Shapiro family and reach out to the community to spread the Beit Issie Shapiro message.

“I am so thrilled to have found Beit Issie Shapiro. It’s all about the children and that goes right to my heart. I take great pleasure in working with our donors and look forward to increasing awareness of Beit Issie Shapiro in Los Angeles and its surroundings.”

AMERICAN FRIENDS OF BEIT ISSIE SHAPIRO MAKING A DIFFERENCE

To pay tribute to you and to recognize the significant financial support from planned gifts, the American Friends of Beit Issie Shapiro (AFOBIS) has established a Heritage Society. There are several ways to join our Heritage Society and create a legacy that will benefit Beit Issie Shapiro and guarantee that your support for our work will make a difference in the lives of children for generations to come:

• Modify your estate plan to include a provision for the American Friends of Beit Issie Shapiro in your will or revocable trust. It is simple and inexpensive, and can be altered at any time.

• Designate the American Friends of Beit Issie Shapiro as a beneficiary of your current or new life insurance policy, or list AFOBIS as a beneficiary of your IRA or other retirement plan.

• The IRA charitable rollover is back again. In 2013, direct gifts from qualifying donors to the American Friends of Beit Issie Shapiro from your IRA can be a tax-free rollover contribution and count toward your required minimum distribution.

• Consider support for the American Friends of Beit Issie Shapiro as part of a strategy to provide yourself with income in your retirement years. There are several different vehicles that will provide you with an income for life with the remainder directed to Beit Issie Shapiro.

Through a planned giving alternative, you may be capable of bestowing a larger gift to Beit Issie Shapiro than you even thought possible – a gift that will also benefit you.

For more information on establishing your own legacy for Beit Issie Shapiro, please contact Steve Rose at +1 305 933 0774 or via email at [email protected].

Visiting from South Africa, Australia and the USA, three generations of the Lubner family gathered at Beit Issie Shapiro. Bertie and Hilary Lubner established the Lubner Family Therapy Center in 1999, providing therapeutic programs for children with disabilities of all ages and for their families. Marc Lubner was the first Chair of the South African Friends of Beit Issie Shapiro. Today, the family’s vision to improve the quality of life of children with disabilities has continued to grow. This includes helping us broaden the professional and philanthropic reach of Beit Issie Shapiro in South Africa. We are

extremely grateful for the Lubners’ longstanding support and close friendship, and congratulate Bertie Lubner on his receipt of the Ben Gurion University Lifetime Achievement Award.

Over 300 soccer players, kids and fans turned out for the Canadian Friends of Beit Issie Shapiro’s 3rd annual Soccerthon. Led by CFOBIS Chair Gilad Epstein, the entire competition was run by over 20 volunteers and 48% more funds were raised this year. Congratulations to Team TIN who won the Round-Robin competition. A hundred kids also enjoyed “kids soccer” and a multi-sport kids zone with professional instructors from King David Stars and R&B sports. The Kachol Lavan choir treated the crowd to the national anthems at the event’s opening ceremony. The Canadian Friends are very grateful to the Soccerthon’s 17 sponsors, and congratulate Brian Singer, the player who raised the most sponsorship.

Our UK donors gathered at the biggest event on the Hebrew Order of David’s social calendar: the 17th annual Bingo Night. Beit Issie Shapiro is one of several charities that benefit from funds raised at this function, an entertaining evening of bingo games, prize draws, auctions and more. Thanks to Alex Beare’s stellar leadership, the UK Friends of Beit Issie Shapiro is able to benefit and make a true difference in the lives of children with disabilities.
