CanGrow - CanTeen Self DevelopmenT GranTS for memberSThe purpose of CanGrow Self Development Grants is to support members with their personal growth. CanTeen recognises a cancer experience will often disrupt our education, development and training. CanGrow grants are designed to help catch up on lost ground and to help re-launch your self development. Grants are subject to a maximum of $1,500 per person with approximately 25 grants available per year. The next round of applications will be considered by the grants committee in July and we encourage CanTeen members to apply. Well what can a girl say….NATIONAL CAMP 2010 in Auckland was “OUT OF THIS WORLD!!”

I LOVED working with the National Camp Committee to put on a week of good times! There were so many highlights, members meeting new people, getting amongst it, challenging themselves and having an awesome time! Big ups to all that attended for fully creating a wicked VIBE during the week and living the CanTeen Values!

preSiDenT’S reporTHey all,

So 2010 started off with an awesome National Camp in Auckland. A huge thanks to the Nat’l Camp Committee (NCC) - Anna Blandford, Andrew Crocker, Guy Alexander and Shannon Ryan who worked alongside Jarnia and Michelle from the national office to give us all a fantastic time. This team put in many hours over the previous year to plan and organise this camp, so big ups to them! “The best national camp ever” is a term that has been heard many times!

I would like to challenge all of you out there to get involved and make a difference like these members have. As we know, CanTeen is a member driven organisation, and (along with the help of our amazing staff) we are the ones that make the difference.

For camps, activities, meetings, fundraisers, speeches and anything else associated with CanTeen, we need members to put themselves out there and take leadership roles, to help organise and make things happen.

I’ve been lucky enough to be involved in leadership roles for the last 7 years and it is so rewarding to be able to say “wow look what we created”. You can get heaps of experience making decisions and organise things that it would be hard to gain anywhere else!

It is essential that we have members participating and helping out within the branches, divisions and nationally. So if you are keen, let your local branch president and staff know you would like to get involved more, they’ll be happy for all the help they can get!

Chief exeCuTive’S reporT The best news recently is that Foodstuffs, through their flagship brand Pams, have agreed to renew their partnership with CanTeen. Brilliant!

It’s so good to know that our long standing premier partner will be with us again for at least the next two years. Brad and the Marketing & Fundraising team will tell you more about the Pams sponsorship but for now I’d like to encourage you all to join us and play your part in supporting the Pams partnership.

Let’s be straight up. The Pam’s partnership is hugely important to our finances. And we need a lot of money to provide the services we do.

Not only do Pams help pay for our annual Bandanna Challenge TV campaign but they also give us access, via checkout counters, to over 50% of the country’s grocery shoppers. That’s a lot of people and one heck of an opportunity.

Pams and CanTeen have both committed to do much more with our partnership in 2010/11. If we grow the partnership the benefits to CanTeen will not only be financial but over time we can leverage the partnership to ensure more people in NZ understand us and what we are trying to achieve. If we are to remain strong in the future, it is vital the Kiwi public continue to respect and take us to their hearts.

Jump STarT 2010Well another JUMP START has been and gone! On March 6th, 25 lucky (and brave!) members from around the country got the chance to tandem parachute out of an Airforce Hercules at Whenuapai Airbase.

JUMP START is a charity in its own right and has been running the event for the last four years. CanTeen (along with Project K) is very

fortunate to be chosen as a beneficiary of JUMP START. If you want to check out some of the past action, head to www. jumpstart.org.nz – due to restrictions on taking video and photos on the Airforce base this year our 2010 pics are still a little way off.

For me it was a fabulous programme to be part of, this year organised as a weekend long activity based at Motu Moana Scout Camp in Auckland. It was great to see all the members

get amongst it during the weekend and share in their experience of elation after completing their jump.

A MASSIVE CanTeen THANK YOU to Tim Fastnedge and the JUMP START team, the RNZAF for so generously supplying the Hercules, airbase and people power, and to everybody else that made the day possible.

In return, a benefit for Pams is their people can be proud to support a fantastic community service organisation like CanTeen. They also win by showing customers they have a social conscience and making a difference to the communities where they do business.

Here are some ways you can help:

Show your gratitude – when you visit a Foodstuffs store ( New World, Pack’NSave, Four Square - tell them you are a CanTeen member and thank them for helping us.

Buy Pams products – we all have to eat & shop so doesn’t it make sense to buy the brand that supports us? Tell your family & friends too.

Get involved – our branch staff will be seeking members to assist with the partnership by connecting with people at Foodstuffs.

SCoTT kviCk You roCk!CanTeen Otago were fortunate to have 20 year old

Scott Kvick (an Otago Uni student) fundraising over

the summer. Scott skiked - cross-country skiing for the

road – from Cape Reinga to Bluff, an amazing 2,150km!

Scott was pulled over by police several times, had a

bee fly into his mouth, went through two sets of tyres

and became a frequent consumer of petrol station

food – all to raise funds for CanTeen and SPCA Otago.

He travelled 6-12 hours a day and averaged around

70km with his record being a 143km trip from

Waiouru to Palmerston North reaching speeds of up

to 50kph!

Scott finished his epic journey in Bluff on Jan 7th and

raised $5,000. We are looking forward to catching up

with him when he returns to uni for a formal thank

you celebration!

naTional CampThis was my very first National Camp and I found it fun, rewarding and of course challenging. The people I met were all awesome, very nice and understanding. For my favourite experiences it is a close call between my first proper plane ride - which means my first time out of the South Island and Rainbows End. I have always wanted to go to a theme park so I found it great!

I have been involved with CanTeen since July last year and this was my first National Program and it was definitely more than I could of have asked for. We had a great NCC (Nat’l Camp Committee) of members behind us which made it all the more special and they did an excellent job of making it the best it could have possibly been.

preSiDenT’S reporTHeya, well over the last few months Otago has been on the go slow with activities. Most of our students (including myself) have been on holiday and left the area. We had an awesome response to our survey and contact update form we sent out, so if you haven’t got it in please do so. National Camp activity for Otago/Southland went off and we were unlucky not to win. The members from Otago were awesome on camp and made my job way easy!! It’s now uni and school time again so start coming back to our Tuesday night gatherings and pop into the office for a catch up with our wonderful staff members.

We have big plans for the year so lets stick to our goals and have a goodie!!!

SouThlanD preSiDenT reporTHey Guys, Gregor from Southland here. Have had the most amazing 2009 with CanTeen, I’ve personally managed to sneak in a few trips away. Met some pretty sweet people which are now friends for life! We had our Christmas party at Serra’s place, who is one of our brilliant volunteers, which we shared with her choice family on their farm. We started with a few games, which then progressed to “the surprise activity”. As it turned out this involved us sliding down a steep hill to what most people would have called a dirty smelly pond. But that didn’t phase us as we continued to have a ball, even managing to get Nadine! We then went from our home-made water slide to a nice clean river, which we swam in till we were all frozen! Now it was present time, and our traditional present passing game, which lead to some cool presents! We ate and ate till we were choca! Thanks Serra, Chris and family for an amazing day! Come 2010 I was lucky enough to go to Auckland for National Camp, which was awesome! All of us had a blast and our egg game was an instant hit, thanks to our combined efforts with Otago! Looking forward to what this year has in store for us, we had an industrious Leadership Weekend in February which included a high ropes course on Sunday afternoon. And will update you as to how Jumpstart goes. Can’t wait!

naTional CampNat’l Camp 2010 was an absolute blast! In the days of mayhem in Auckland I am proud to say I am the person who…rocked with the most awesome group of Hydra; cried on the Fear Fall at Rainbows End; spoke at Remembrance Ceremony (in front of everyone and even though I was really nervous!); and “owned it” at lip-syncing Miley Cyrus. Thanks to the Christchurch people I went with for being awesome support, the NCC, Staff and Vols for making the camp run so smoothly and thanks to everyone in my discussion group, Hydra and bunk rooms for making my camp such an out of this world experience. I can’t wait to see you again.

CanTerburY/weST CoaST ChriSTmaS parTY exTravaGanza!Our Christmas party was one of the best ever, with one veryyy scary mother/father Christmas! (where did those slippers come from!?!) It was just lucky there were no small kid’s (lol) there! The committee organised a great scavenger hunt at the Botanical Gardens. This is one time I was glad to have helped organise as we had the teams running all over the place! I think that was our one day of summer - it was a real scorcher! We worked up an appetite! Man oh man what a feast! There was meat, veggies, salads, and ice cream (which was most important!). Next came the prezzies and we all love this part! How can you take Santa wearing pink fluffy slippers seriously?

heY There GanGSTaS!Jeez…what a great kick off to the year! A few weeks ago I had the absolute pleasure of attending National Camp and what a wick wicky week. My favourite part was one morning at 3am when I woke to Anita, Jane and Nadine all snoring (like an aeroplane taking off) in harmony. Who needs to sleep anyway?

By the time you get this we will have had our NSI Summer Camp at a mystery location, but because you won’t get this for awhile… I can say that I’m so excited about swimming with the dolphins AND I really hoped you enjoyed Blue Skies!

Ok, I better go now as Jane is about to give birth any moment and Koral would like her shoulders rubbed. Again.

SupporTerS eveninGThe supporters evening was a great night! The committee and staff put on snacks, drinks and some of us spoke to the attendees on what their donations and fundraising efforts go towards. There were people there who had supported Canterbury/West Coast like St Bedes College, City Councillors, parents and representatives from other supporting agencies. It was a great evening with many laughs, conversations and great food (Prue is a really good cook).

SoY CanDle makinGI had never made a soy candle. I imagined it would involve rolling up lots of sheets of beeswax, like you do in those

candle making kits every nine-year old girl gets. I remembered how this somehow seemed to always produce skinny, droopy, slightly rude looking candles and I anticipated some good photo opps during the evening. However when

Belinda, the candle maker arrived there wasn’t a yellow sheet in sight. A group of us got started choosing a small glass or metal container to poor melted wax into. Belinda had a range of scents to add and beads and ribbons that we used to decorate the outside and inside of the glass. Everyone managed to create an individual candle (even after Prue decided to put flower petals in hers). A 100ml candle will burn for about 21 hours so having burnt mine for 2 hours and filling my lounge with the smell of frangipani, I still have 19 more hours of en-SOY-ment! Get it? I’d like to thank Belinda for giving up her time to teach us - the session was very illuminating. THANKS!!!

wow! CupCakeS!At our General Meeting last year we had the opportunity to help Bronwyn (one of our amazing volunteers) make and decorate cup cakes! Members had a great time decorating them with teddy bears, marshmallows, hundreds of thousands etc. BUT the best thing of all was that we got to eat them. Big thanks to Bronwyn for making it happen.

Camp was such a blast and our very own Gabe Marshall won

the Andrew Newdick Cup giving him a definite in for next

national Camp.

Since then we have had a monthly meeting and went to the

movies to see Avatar 3D which was great fun.

now we are all looking forward to summer camp!

I can’t believe we are now right into 2010… I thought by now we would be vacationing on Mars and all wearing silver pvc suits with inbuilt lazers… lol

Nelson/Marlborough ended 2009 on a high with an awesome weekend away in the beautiful Marlborough Sounds. We caught some fish and enjoyed a bbq lunch and a swim while soaking in the sights on a gorgeous charter boat. Thanks to the wonderful Fishbourne family for their generous hospitality!! We followed up our huge day out with a big night in of movies and munchies at the local holiday park and followed this up with Committee and Values training before returning home. We had a record turn out for this event and it was great to see faces both old and new sharing ideas and strengthening ties to create a bigger and better branch for 2010!

look baCk ….Our Christmas party was at the Fitzroy Boardriders. We had some new members come which was cool and a huge thanks to all the committee. We played funny games and the Volunteers cooked an awesome BBQ. Thanks to all who came and all who helped out.

hi from lauree …..It’s been a flat out time for us that has been great and we’ve also enjoyed a little rest time over Christmas.

We’ve been looking hard at our activities and have some cool ones coming up including some fun fundraisers at Americana, WOMAD and the International Women’s Surf comp. Go the Naki!

We have a few patient members on treatment at the mo and wish them all the best. Watch out for our awesome home & hospital packs if you’re down for too long. They’re packed with cool stuff. Sadly, we lost Carlin Snooks in January. What a trooper he was. He would have been in the running for breaking a record for treatment times.

Thanks to everyone supporting us at the moment including our legend Volunteers! With support from the community and our close supporters, we are able to continue creating cool opportunities for young people living with cancer.

naTional CampRoxy, Olivia B, Olivia S and I spent National Camp meeting CanTeeners from all around NZ. It was unlike any other camp I have attended.. I turned up expecting it to be like any other school camp with the usual ropes course and stuff like that, but I wasn’t prepared for the amount of peer support available. The week could was split nicely with activity time and discussion time. I wouldn’t have thought most of it would have applied to me being a sibling but I now know this is for everyone and they cater for all different situations. If you’re wondering what I mean, just go on camp! One of the highlights for me, and for others would have been the day at Rainbow’s End. Fear Fall = Awesome! That and the Bumper Cars are always a classic. At the Space Party we raged to a live band in our awesome as costumes. The Taranaki contingent went with the ‘Thunderbirds” theme. I met so many awesome new people and so did the girls, so if you get the opportunity to go next time DO IT!

xmaS parTY…..For the second year Foxton put on great weather for our Xmas party. We were taken out by the awesome people at the Foxton Boating Club and Coastguard. Caitlin and I had a go on the Jet Ski and I reckon that he had it in for gingas because we tipped and it so looked on purpose! It was a fantastic time with a yum BBQ and meeting new people.

I had a good time at Foxton because I got the chance to jetski and got to meet so many new people and members. My favourite part was going out into the big boats into the rough seas and the feeling of being pushed from side to side.

anD meeTinG The Team…..Manawatu was given the fantastic opportunity to meet

the Wellington Phoenix in December prior to the big game

vs. Sydney FC in Palmerston North. We had heaps of things

signed and photos and in return gave them yellow and

black bandannas. The night of the game a few CanTeeners

went along to cheer them on and even had a huge sign

saying “CanTeen loves Phoenix” that got us on TV.

Thanks so much to Wellington Phoenix for taking the time

to meet us, it was so fantastic, you were all so awesome and

down to earth!!

A special thank you to Ben Sigmund who plays for the

Phoenix and the All Whites. Ben volunteers for CanTeen

and some of you may have met him at the joint activity

on ANZAC weekend in Palmy. He organised the whole

thing for us! What a fantastic chap!

CanTeen auSTralia naTional Camp

Ozzy! Ozzy! Ozzy! Oi! Oi! Oi! National Camp 2010 in Sydney, Australia was the most incredible experience….

William, Steve and I along with 100 or so ozzy CanTeen members spent five crazy, fun-filled days together.

They were all fascinated with our accents, our awesome bandannas and especially our laid back friendly nature.

We did so many things like sailing, teamwork skill learning, circus skills, surfing, sand dune boarding, fishing, swimming and so much more. Highlights were the messy games with jelly, egg, spaghetti, baked beans, flour and paint being thrown at everyone! Look out NZ! The end of camp party was amazing with everyone dressed in bright carnival themed costumes. There were snow cones, popcorn and candy floss and of course dancing the night away.

The most important thing I gained from the experience was the life-long friendships and the skills and qualities I gained and talking to ozzy CanTeen leaders to improve and help make CanTeen NZ even better.

Big ups to the awesome CanTeen Australia for hosting us we had a wicked time!

I want to thank CanTeen NZ from the bottom of my heart for giving me this fantastic opportunity. If you ever get a chance to experience anything like this - grab it and never let go ‘cause it will be a one in a million opportunity.

National camp was amazing - I had the chance meet so many new members and had a lot of fun. The activities offered were awesome, from a giant cream pie fight to creating our very own rock band and performing for everyone. It was fantastic!

HAWKES BAY

whiTe waTer rafTinGSaturday 6 February was an awesome day for CanTeen HB! We went white water rafting down the Mohaka River, doing a grade 3 – which means waves and water falls. Crickey!

The water was just a little warmer than what ice is made of but we were tough – we donned our wetsuits, polar fleeces and life jackets – warm as toast. We divided into two groups which as it worked out to be the rescue boat and the other boat. At one point all the volunteers and members who could swim were in the water and the non-swimmers still in the other boat. So the ‘rescue boat’ came to their aid and collected them out of the freezing water

– watch out Piha Rescue!

Some very nutty, but I must say courageous members and volunteers decided to jump off a cliff into the cold water. No it wasn’t the saying about jumping off a cliff – they just did it.

Big thumbs up to one of our newest volunteers who has never in all her years been white water rafting and she was in amongst it with the rest of us – go Bev! And thanks heaps to guides – Norm, Bill, Jon and the neighbour (oops not sure of his name). We had such an awesome day! Looking forward to it next year.

funDraiSinGHB had two great fundraisers in December. Celebrate Life which took place at Sparta gym where members got together and did BodyBalance (a combination of thai chi, pilates and yoga) on the beach at 8am. Each Bodybalancer raised money by getting sponsored. What an amazing experience and great fundraiser. Thanks Rachel (our wonderful volunteer) who also works for Sparta and was the instructor.

Then members and myself dressed up as fairies/Santa’s helpers (yes hard to believe) and worked alongside Santa to give children the wonderful experience. The adults who got involved wanted a new boat and a new Holden (what the ?). But the best was a guy who said he would tell Santa on Boxing Day what he wanted ‘cos by then he would know what he already had and could ask for what he didn’t get. Smart kid! Thanks Mitre 10 for pulling this together and giving us gifts to give to the children

4-wheel DrivinG…On Sunday Dec 13th, we gathered for 4 wheel driving- our last activity for the year!! This is becoming a popular event in our branch as we had a huge turnout, including three guests - Ruta & the Crocker brothers. Due to recent rain the ground was very soft and a lot of rescues had to be performed - mmm mud! Some people were also allowed a turn at driving and a few of us took the opportunity to ride in an open vehicle to get really covered in mud- wooooo!!! Those that didn’t - we took care of them by throwing mud anyway.

Then it was back to the office for a much needed shower & some secret santa

(water toys & sugar were popular), before we went to dinner at The Gin

Trap. While waiting for our meal and between conversations A. Crocker &

I tried to keep up with the cricket on the tv (we figured maybe next year

we should go to the cricket for an activity). The food was great!

Massive thanks must go to the HB 4 Wheel Driving Club and The

Gin Trap for a great afternoon. It was awesome to see so

many people at one activity - let’s try & keep that up guys!

Tug boating next month. I hope to see plenty of you

ChriSTmaS parTY - CaSino/bowlinGIt was that time of year and we were all in the mood to celebrate, so our committee decided on a “Casino” themed Christmas party. We went to The Lanes Bowling Alley and played poker, chase the ace, black jack, and a random spin the wheel thing. We also tested our skills on the lanes with mixed success. We had an awesome turn out with about 55 people made up of CanTeeners and their families. A pity Hanna, our new PSC/MLC couldn’t attend but she was there in spirit and on a giant picture hanging off one of the poles…

After the fun and games it was present time… we all got a present each ranging from random silly gifts to more random and silly gifts. It was a nice party for all!

roCk on! ukulele hoSpiTal performanCe

At midday on 17th February we went to Wellington Hospital for a mini surprise concert. Current Patient Member, Ana Alesemo was the guest of honour as she loves traditional Tokelau ukulele music. Members of the Wellington International Ukulele Orchestra came to perform for CanTeeners, doctors, nurses and other patients and their families. They played, told some jokes, talked about their instruments and even had us all singing along! Thanks so much Sam, Gemma, Age, Andy, Dan and Francis!

Alfs Army Sea Water Battle: Operation Leviathan

On a beautiful (non windy and sunny)

Wellington day, local CanTeeners headed to the

waterfront with water pistols, umbrellas, wet

water gear and sunscreen. This was a different

yet interesting activity, organized by KAOS

& Alf’s Army. It was a battle - Alf’s Army/

KAOS vs CanTeen. The reason for this battle

was for “How should CanTeener’s wear their

bandannas?” - “english” style or “CanTeen”

style and so the battle began.

We used water pistols to shoot and

umbrellas to defend and found soaking

people using the kayak paddles very

effective. After a few battles we all had a

good paddle and jumped out. We finished

the day (with post war celebrations) enjoying

ice creams and snacks and a victorious group

photo.

on Yer bike- a viSiT from STeve CheSTerfielDEarly February a couple of CanTeeners got the opportunity to meet Steve Chesterfield - a fantastic fundraiser for CanTeen. Steve cycled over 2222km around the South Island during January and raised over $4000. CanTeen Wellington had a special afternoon tea with fresh baked yummy home baked biscuits, we gave him a bandanna and a CanTeen coffee mug to say ‘thank you’ for all his efforts. We also had a nice hospital visit with current Patient Member, Kurt McNichol.

We are really appreciative of what you have done Steve. You gave up your time to do something to help CanTeen.

whiTe waTer rafTinGOn January 31st we went white water rafting on the Kaituna River near Rotorua. There were twelve members with Bex and Tracey our volunteer. There had been a lot of heavy rain so the river was at the highest we were allowed to raft on. It was heaps of fun and the 7m waterfall was an awesome experience. The boys were so much more nervous than the girls! I’d love to do it again!

baSeball baTTinGFor Tauranga’s February activity Rupert, Ra, Laree, Logan, Zoe and me went to the local baseball batting cages and golf range. We may have been a smallish group but we filled the whole place with fun and laughter. The best part on the golf range was aiming at the guy in the kart collecting all the golf balls. Then Zoe cheekily asked to go in the kart and to her surprise Ted said yes. For the next fifteen minutes as

Zoe was getting driven around the rest of us started aiming at her and the kart. Thankfully we were all

rubbish shots. Maybe it was all the laughing that put us off… we ended with baseball batting, which I sucked

at but was impressed with how well Laree did with one arm! Thanks guys I had a great time hanging out with

you.

Café CaTCh upEast Cape had a fantastic cafe catch up in January! Whilst sipping frozen cokes, it was the perfect chance to catch up on the summer holiday gossip. We also welcomed our newest member Danielle Russell to the CanTeen family. A great Gizzy afternoon, plus ideas started to buzz about our upcoming summer camp! As always a fun time with the East Cape branch, can’t wait for another year hanging out with CanTeen!

eaST Cape ChriSTmaS After years of rain rain rain! our 2009 Christmas Party did not let us down. The sun was shining and the office was the perfect place to spend the afternoon swimming and a big game of cricket. We also had a beach dig with mystery prizes giving everyone a lot of laughs! The parents cooked the bbq and the food was amazing! It was a great night for members and families to get together and to welcome Raymond to his first CanTeen activity.

Daniel eldenThank You!The BOP Branch has some very special creative helpers behind the scenes in Whangamata with the Patch and Quilt group, headed by Carol Waldron. Over the last few years these very talented ladies have been quilting bed covers for our newly diagnosed patients and their siblings. The quilts have bandannas sewn through the designs and they brighten up any hospital or bedroom! For some these quilts are their first connection they have to CanTeen. The quilts are given not only as a gift but to also serve as a reminder to patients that we are here if you need us. Twelve beautifully made quilts were presented to CanTeen along with a donation for one of our many fun monthly activities.

And another big thanks to Noel from Body Mechanics Tauranga for helping CanTeen BOP move into new big offices, he donates each month to CanTeen – Thank you so much!

naTional CampSeveral lucky Waikato/BOP/East Cape members travelled north to Auckland for one of the best experiences of their lives - National Camp 2010. It was amazing. From the huge shaving cream fight to the battle of the bands, everyone had the opportunity to step out of their comfort zone and try something new. A definite highlight was the African drumming workshop. Everyone had an awesome time and great to see everyone participating, even if a tad uncoordinated like myself. Thanks to the NCC staff and volunteers for making this week possible. I met so many amazing people and will have these friends for life. And one more thing...GO PAVO!

Our hard-working, super friendly, dependable and a truly great organizer - man are we going to miss you. Kelsie has been on the committee since our Branch opened in 2006 and reluctantly leaves the best beaches in NZ, possibly (undoubtedly) in the world, to study in Hamilton. Hey, at least she stays in the Division, that’s how loyal she is. Anyway as we are never short of truly inspirational young leaders in Gisborne we have voted our one and only Miss Phillipa (FLIP) Webb as Pres and the girl with the neatest handwriting ever, Miss Courtney Fairbank as Vice. We are united with the rest of the committee leading East Cape as One Team.

GalaxY of CarSOn 7 February Helena, Moni, Patricia and Beth went to MOTAT in Western Springs Auckland to shake, shake, shake our buckets for donations at the Galaxy of Cars event. I’d like to say a big thank you to the New Lynn Lions for supporting us especially Noel Mountjoy & Mary Hibberd for helping choose CanTeen Auckland to receive this support - a big circle of love for u guys, woot woot!!!! The best moment for me was showing our CanTeen colours and the people who gave us large donations.

I really admire those people they are awesome. People driving through were even waving money out the

windows! We were very appreciative and thanked them all. Nags & Teal met a very

friendly proud CanTeen supporter Polly Foote who was our Auckland Ambassador for the day, she modeled the lovely red bandanna designed by Lisa Tamati.

vibe one Kimberly from the awesome dance group Vibe One had worked with CanTeen before and thought it’d be a mean as idea to have a show for us. She brought together dancers, singers and other performers to put on a show. CanTeeners like me and my brother Tim joined in and we danced hip-hop with the Vibe One crew.

They were awesome to work with, really nice and treated us with total respect – and we gained a few friendships in the process. I joined in the talent show because I love dancing! Kim was awesome to work with, energetic fun and always happy.

I had so much fun doing the stomp and being with people who are living to the full! The event also helped people

be more aware there are kids with cancer and that they are strong and getting through a life much harder than most. Vibe One helped show that these kids are normal and have so much fun and they are dealing with life and should be admired for their

courage.

People like Kim and the Vibe On crew helped put a smile on so many faces and its great to have them around.

CapTain purpleS aDvenTureSA local student Sarah Crosby from Kamo High School entered the Young Enterprise Scheme with her business CS Productions. Sarah pledged to donate profits to CanTeen Northland from her business idea to make and sell a DVD called Captain Purple’s Adventures. The DVD featured of a larger-than-life yellow character “Captain Purple” cooking a range of recipes. Sort of Jamie Oliver meets Sesame Street. Sarah won Top Energy’s Northland Young Enterprise Scheme Company of the Year and went on to be the only sole trader in 30 years to make it to the National Awards in Wellington. CanTeen Northland gratefully accepted a cheque from Sarah and we held a thank you BBQ in December.

auCklanD/norThlanD ChriSTmaS parTY.Our Christmas Party was held at Wenderholm with Leeann, Ben Iggo, Chris Gill, Daniel O’Hagan, Elliot Gill, Gina Iggo and Mr and Mrs Gill attending. It was overcast but we all had a lovely lunch…we watched as one family sat underneath the tent as it poured rain and a gust lifted the tent that ended up on top of everyone! There were lots of activities including a bouncy castle that some mysterious person put bubbles inside of. It got messy but was a lot of fun and everyone enjoyed their day!elliot Gill

auSTralian naTional CampWhile you were all at National Camp in Auckland, I spent the week at Australian National Camp. I was accompanied by Steve (PSC) and Anna from Manawatu.

Over the week activities included a giant swing, high ropes, scavenger hunt, beats and rhythm making, carnival tricks, circus acts, mosaic arts, massage and pampering, a boat cruise, over 18s supper club and messy games – all about causing havoc and getting as messy as possible. There were surfing lessons, fishing, 4wd rides and dune surfing which was pretty cool. We left Steve in Sydney and flew home in time to catch up with the final few hours of our own National Camp.

GirlS DaY ouT DeCember 2009Girls Day Out - December 9th. This is an annual event for the girls to get together and be girly. Most Northland members are boys so we spend all year hunting, fishing and shooting but in December we celebrate being female. We went to the Papermill which is a local workshop that makes their own paper and stationery by hand. They showed us the art of papermaking and we spent the morning making paper, cards and decorations. We then went to a “ladies lunch” at a local café called Caffeine and then to a movie the “Time Travellers Wife.” A very girly day complete with gift bags donated by local businesses.

mlC reporTThings have been pretty quiet with the office shut for about seven weeks for a nice relaxing summer holiday but back now and rearing to go! Events planned for next two months include clay bird shooting at Hikurangi and an all day trip out to Poor Knights Islands. This is our very own marine reserve rated as one of the world’s top ten dive spots. Jumpstart in March is very exciting along with Summer Camp in the beautiful Bay of Islands – almost makes you wish you were lucky enough to live up here!

Big welcome back to William Rewiri who survived CanTeen Australia National Camp. Will made it back to our National Camp and after 8 coffees (I kid you not) was able to share some tales of life across the ditch.

Big welcome to some new members – Dillan and Amy Rielly, Katie Iggo and Etivina Maafu. Nice to have you on board and we look forward to seeing you at activities in the near future.

DaviD Te maipiOn 9 January David Te Maipi passed

peacefully away in his back garden in the afternoon sun. David was a very active

CanTeener in 2007 and 2008, he attended National Camp in 2008 (Auckland) and

2009 (New Plymouth). He won the Staff Cup award at National Camp ‘08. David also went

on Jumpstart in 2009 - which was one of the things he wanted to do before he died - as

well as getting a tattoo on his back and his lip pierced. David made the most of his last year

and was very involved in his college Kapa Haka group and got to go to his senior school ball.

Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with David’s Mum Alma, Stepdad Mark and his two little brothers Samuel and Kane.

David will be greatly missed by all CanTeeners and staff.

Not long before Canterbury / West Coast Branch wrapped up the year, as always we had a rip roarer of a Christmas Party which would turn out to be Ben’s final event in CanTeen. Only a week after the Christmas bash, Ben relapsed and became very unwell, very quickly and sadly passed away on 5

January 2010. Ben was known in our branch as being witty, blunt, funny (hilarious in fact), cheeky, always hungry, super helpful, thoughtful, kind and just a really great guy. We will miss seeing your friendly face around CanTeen Ben and you don’t have to worry about Rachel – well make sure she’s well looked after.

Ben, what an awesome friend and CanTeen member you were, the number of people at your funeral proved that. Your life ended way too early with all the potential you had! Ben - a member who was always keen to help out anyone and with anything. Ben had such a big heart, always smiling and laughing.
