So exactly how did a young man who studied to be anenvironmental biologist end up in the very competitive,fast-paced and exciting automotive industry? Ask Sloane

Jackson, that is if you can hang on to him long enough to get thefull story, as to say that he is a man much sought after nowadayswould be an understatement.

Auto Trendz JA tracked down the very busy Jackson for aone-on-one, as recently he earned the distinction of being theyoung general manager of a major automotive group in the island.Taking care of renowned brands such as Mercedes Benz,Mitsubishi, Mini and Suzuki now falls under his portfolio as Jacksonis Mercedes Benz General Manager and the Group Sales andBusiness Manager for Stewarts Automotive Group.

Exciting days are ahead for Sloane, his team and the four majorbrands mentioned as he shared that the group has big plans. Theyintend to raise the bar for Jamaicans in terms of service, customersatisfaction and vehicular superiority.

When asked what he brought to the table as a ‘young gun’ whojust turned 31, he did not bat an eyelid or hesitate to inform AutoTrendz JA that professionalism in handling the brands will be hisstarting point from which he has already been working assiduously.“Though I’m newly appointed, it feels no different. I will beengaging people and getting them to understand the process, buyinto sales and improved customer service while correcting anyissues prior to our taking over these brands.”

“For me, it’s a team effort and that’s what I always ask for. I’m thefirst person to do whatever I ask my team to contribute as I’mnot above getting in the trenches. I remember moving cars justlike it was yesterday. This job requires energy as the amount ofeffort it takes can be Herculean. I work six days minimum androughly 12 hours daily so I can easily do 72 hours weekly. I’m notsaying I put in more than everybody else, but my job requiresdedication and commitment.”

PERSONALITY PROFILE:

Dedicated to improvingcustomer satisfactionand service

Page 16: Autotrendz Magazine July 2014

17

It is that commitment that helped to see the realization of a brandnew, state-of-the-art Mercedes Benz showroom with a total 8,500square feet of luxury, of which 6,000 is easily display space. “Theshowroom can comfortably house six to ten cars, stylishlyhighlighting each. It also boasts a customer lounge and vehicledelivery area.”

“Mercedes boasts all hand-crafted engines which make it evenmore special and they are continuously innovating. This year, wewill have a new ‘C’ class and a return diesel ML which are morefuel efficient, giving 47 miles to the gallon. We will be bringing inmore dream cars, especially the Coupe, so we will be representingMercedes Benz the way they would want it to be.”

Mitsubishi and Suzuki, he added, also have great new products forthe market and will be prominently displayed at an upcomingmotor show. “The Suzuki Swift Dzire is a good, low-cost optionwhich can be available for a steal at $35,000.00 monthly for a brandnew 2014 model. You can’t ask for better deal.”

With the mini, he said they relocated it to their South Camp Roadpremises to better showcase its beauty and efficiency. “The newmini hatch is slightly bigger and comes complete with 1.6 turboengine which gives greater power while being 40 miles to thegallon, which is what makes the mini a great, everyday car.”

While his knowledge of cars is unquestioned, Jackson’s formaltertiary education was in the sciences as mentioned, but he neededmoney for research and schooling and a friend in the used carindustry suggested he give it a try to continue to fund his education.

The business ignited a fire within him and soon he developed aknack for the automotive industry that saw him switching frombiology to the scientific research needed for comprehensiveknowledge of vehicular engineering and styling. That is not to sayhe was previously without knowledge, as he grew up working onand pulling down vehicles but had initially opted not to pursue itas a career. Funny how life came full circle and brought him backto his first passion.

18

There is a buzz in the automotive industry as one car hasbeen gaining both traction and attention from carenthusiasts and connoisseurs who can discern quality, not

only upon seeing it but more importantly, upon closer inspection.

The buzz being created surrounds the Mitsubishi ASX, a compactSUV that has been doing well in Jamaica, thanks to its handling onthe road as well as the marketing team at the Stewarts Group.

‘Geared for life’, the Mitsubishi ASX is a dream to drive for a hostof reasons which Auto Trendz JA sought to explore as we knowyou will appreciate the finer details of this vehicle that is oneveryone’s vehicular wish list.

Working our way from the outside, visually it is appealing as itsunique design has made many take more than a second glance inits direction. Sporting a panoramic glass roof, black roof rails andsuper wide range HID headlamps, this is styling with a capital ‘S’.To top it off, the ASX also boasts rear mud guards and powerdoor mirror with side turn lamps. LED daytime running lamp withfog lamp, plus a great chrome packaging with a chrome exhaustfinisher completes the look.

Now, while looking good is important as first impressions docount, it is more than just a ‘pretty’ SUV, as performance-wise italso stands out in its class. Its MIVEC Engine makes othersenvious. ASX’s 2.0-litre powerhouse uses a lightweightaluminium block for optimum performance as it puts out 110kWto cruise urban streets as well as gravelly country roads with ease.MIVEC (Mitsubishi Innovative Valve Timing Electronic ControlSystem) technology provides optimal valve timing at both low andhigh rev ranges, to maximise its control of both the curves of ourhillsides and the straightaway of our highways.

With a simple touch of an easily-located button, itselectronically controlled 4WD springs into action with itssystem permitting easy switching between three drive modes, depending on driving condition or environment. Easily accessibleon the floor console, the drive-mode selector button can quicklychange the ASX’s drive mode from fuel-efficient 2WD, to 4WDLock Mode for mastering even demanding off-road or weatherconditions. The ASX’s suspension features the MacPherson strutfront and multi-link rear system for smooth handling over eventhe roughest of roads and its shock absorbers and stabilizerstransform bumpy rides into sporty, comfortable and relaxing ones.

Geared for life!

The Mitsubishi

Page 18: Autotrendz Magazine July 2014

19

The Mitsubishi ASX takes safety very seriously, which is why itcomes with those Super Wide Range HID Headlampsmentioned earlier. Knowing that what you cannot see canhurt you, the manufacturer has taken every precaution necessaryfor a safe journey, eliminating shadows with its Super Wide RangeHID (High Intensity Discharge) headlamps. When activated, theseheadlamp clusters send out broader beams of light, illuminating amuch wider section of the road ahead.

Airbags are a given nowadays, but the ASX takes theiroffering a step further with a 7-Airbag system so everyoneinside is super safe in the event of a collision as the system providesincreased safety for every seat. The front seats are protected byfront airbags, plus an additional knee airbag for the driver to helpprotect the legs in a forward collision. In a side collision, occupantsin both rows are protected by curtain airbags extending along theside.

In terms of its utility, its keyless operation system facilitates itsdriver activating the ignition just by pressing the button locatednear the centre of the dash panel with the brake depressed andthe shift in parking position for CVT, or with the clutch pedal

depressed and shift in neutral position for manual transmission.Once you have arrived, one more push shuts off the engine.

Now for the fun part! When it comes to entertainment, it is greatas its panoramic glass roof with interior LED illumination is outof this world! The glass roof adds a new dimension to the drive, allowing both driver and passengers to enjoy the view from everyangle and direction. Retracting the sunshade reveals a full-size glassroof panel extending over the front and rear seats and at night, the roof is attractively illuminated with LED lamps so your viewis not only unobstructed, it is glorious.

And when it comes to sound, the Mitsubishi ABX is equipped withan impressive 9-speaker Rockford Fosgate Premium SoundSystem that gives high-quality sound and bass response withan ultra-powerful punch. The speakers are fitted precisely into thedoor panels, turning them into frequency-enhancing speakercabinets. In addition, sound levels are automatically adjusted tosuit the vehicle’s speed. Yes, the Mitsubishi ASX is ready for theroad and definitely ready for you. Question is: are you up for thechallenge?

Ah, the squeal of rubber, the smell of race fuel and the thrust ofthe throttle. Nothing screams racing quite like two cars side byside on a track and nowhere is this more prominent than in dragracing. At any given meet at Vernamfield, patrons are captivatedby the quality motor sport they witness as the variety of vehiclesthat come out to test their mettle makes it a day well worth beingoutdoors and enjoying all they have to offer.

For Stephen Gunter, Executive Member of the National DragRacing Circuit (NDRC), drag racing is motor sport in its mostnatural and truest form, and that is what brings out the

competitors as well as the crowds to every meet. People love agood competition wherein there are no deliberations and no needto tell them who has won, for with drag racing the winners arethe individuals who leave everything on the track.

According to Gunter, the NDRC was established in 2003, themain purpose of which was to move toward a more professionalapproach to the sport. “We treat it as a business so it’s not doneon an event to event basis; we work toward maintaining the visionof where we want to carry the Series—to be the premier formof motor sports in the island.”

Page 20: Autotrendz Magazine July 2014

21

The NDRC, he says, is known not only for its fairness but equallyas important, its discipline on and off the track. “Our disciplinestands out. We give no special treatment to ‘star’ drivers and treateveryone the same; all are equal. We take the term ‘organised’very seriously.”

For 2014, the calendar of events is a busy one with four majorevents in May, July, October and December, where they will besupported by their marketing partner Nestlé through their brandSupligen. Every effort will be made to transform Vernamfield intoa car enthusiast’s dream and even if you are not that enthused

about watching racing all day, the NDRC will make a fan out ofyou by day’s end, as they say there is nothing quite like it whenyou actually come out and see it live for yourself.

And why are people so fascinated by drag racing? “It isentertainment value for your money all day from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.You can’t beat the value. We transform Vernamfield into a placewhere you want to be. We even have a free Kiddies Village wherethey can ride and play all day. Plus, all of our marketing partnerswill be on hand. Yes, it is primarily about the racing but it has anatmosphere of comfort you can’t beat.”

Page 21: Autotrendz Magazine July 2014

22

Drag racing’s popularity he added is growing by leaps and boundsas everybody enjoys a good race and more people are realisingthat they too can come out and be a part of the day’s activities.“You get to see everything that happens in front of you and peoplecan relate to it because its motor sports in its simplest form. It’stwo cars running from point A to point B and you see the resultsinstantly.”

The sport, he informed Auto Trendz JA, is as old as the inventionof the car itself. “The first drag race happened after they inventedthe first car. They wanted to see how fast it would go so theyraced it against a horse, so it is as old as the car itself. It is very

thrilling to watch and once you have done it as a racer you arehooked for life!”

At the last meet they had 134 cars, so the NDRC took the decisionthat at their next meet, for the first time they will have to limitthe number of racers to 150 as safety is key. They also have toget through all their events in a timely manner. “We have classesfor various speeds so anybody can enter and fit in; that is one ofthe attractions for drivers. It doesn’t have to be a ‘soup’d up’ orexpensive race car. It doesn’t take anything out of the norm; youcan just bring your car and race. Drag racing is that simple andthat much fun.”

Page 22: Autotrendz Magazine July 2014

23

We may not understand it completely, but for some peoplelife is about taking something plain and rocking it out ina way that makes the mundane come alive and the

ordinary become not only extraordinary but all ‘skunked out’.

Just ask the guys at ‘Skunk Nation’ and they will gladly share with youthat cars are their passion and that passion has become aphenomenon that has been creating a huge buzz, not only locally buton the international circuit.

Established in March 2012, Skunk Nation grew out of a partnershipamong three friends namely Nick Lue, Edward Bond and StephenWong. Their enthusiasm for cars and car modification led them tothe novel concept of forming a group around their shared passion.

LIFESTYLE BRAND FORTHE FAST & THEFEARLESS

Page 23: Autotrendz Magazine July 2014

24

As Nick Lue tells it, Skunk Nation is now a lifestyle that manyothers are embracing. “We initially started as a group thataimed to showcase Jamaica’s automotive pursuits, mainly thatof underground cars which people like me had a passion forsetting up, modification, customization and mechanics.”

“Because of our network with the tuning world, I used to keeplink-ups at gas stations, so I had the idea for a car show in thenight. The concept was ‘Import Tuner Nite’. This eventcomprised of cars that are modified plus car enthusiasts andeveryone who interested in the car-tuning industry. We stagedit on June 2, 2012 at Michi Supercentre and attracted over 2,000patrons and had 180 cars. We found that we had a niche, sowe started doing branding with t-shirts, license plate holdersand stickers and through social media like Facebook, we startedgrowing.”

The team then decided that based on the success of their firstmajor show, they would have an annual event staged at theNational Stadium. International promoters and press wereflown in and included Javier Ortega of Honda Day out of NewJersey, NYCE1s, race apparel team ‘Eat, Sleep, Race’ and‘Vraceworks’. “We had 280 cars, over 4,000 patrons, broughtin display cars and even hosted a ‘Miss Skunk Nation Contest’that was hugely popular.”

The brand has been getting great following, amassing some15,000 fans on Instagram and over 8,000 through Facebookwith the numbers growing daily. “We have also done cars forcorporate clients such as Appleton and LIME, plus the UsedCar Dealers Association of Jamaica.”

Their big show this year is much anticipated and all roads willlead to the National Stadium on August 16, 2014. Skunk Nationdoes not intend to disappoint so they are going all out to ensurethat patrons have a great time. “We are stepping it up this yearas we will be giving away a car, a 1995 Honda Civic with our

Page 24: Autotrendz Magazine July 2014

25

Page 25: Autotrendz Magazine July 2014

26

own Skunk Nation modifications, so it is‘skunked out’ for one lucky patron in a raffle.”

So how did they come up with their verycatchy name? Lue explained that it originatedfrom his personal car he had dubbed ‘PineappleSkunk’ and everything grew from there. “Weadded ‘nation’ to represent one nation. Theterm ‘Skunk’ as we use it means ‘stink’ whichfor us refers to something that is eye popping, out of the norm, eye catching and out of thisworld.”

Skunk Nation is not only about cars as theydo have a softer side and are heavily into givingback. “We have done charity events everyChristmas for two consecutive years and madedonations to Maxfield Park Children’s Homeand the Mustard Seed Communities and wewill continue to do this as we believe inenriching our communities.”

“We are playing our part is putting Jamaica onthe ‘import scene’ with our events as we wantto be the ‘sting’ of the automotive industry andhelp promote Jamaica and showcase what wehave to offer.”

Have you seen the price of gas lately? The way fuel costs are escalating, a trip to yourfriendly gas station doesn’t seem so friendly for your pocket anymore and filling your gastank at times can mean emptying your wallet.

While as individuals we can’t do much about fuel economy on a national scale, there areseveral ingenious ways to make what you buy last a lot longer if you implement some ofthe following steps. These simple rules will not only improve your fuel economy but save

Take it easy.We are always in a hurry to get somewhere and do notrealise that if we simply gave ourselves enough time totravel, we wouldn’t always be rushing. The aerodynamicdrag forces an engine to work harder and use more fuel.By simply decreasing your speed, you can increase yourfuel economy by as much as 20 percent!

Open your windows sometimes and enjoy the freshair.Yes, we are in a tropical climate and sometimes the sunis scorching which makes the car seem like an oven, butthe use of air conditioning can reduce you fuel by as muchas two miles per gallon under certain speeds and operatingconditions.

Buy gasoline during the coolest time of day.Purchase your fuel either early morning or late eveningas during these times gasoline is densest.

Plan your day properly. If you gave some thought to where you need to gothroughout the course of a day, you would realise thatyou can run your errands in between meetings andappointment and not be on the road every single day. Notonly will you spend less time driving around town, oftentimes in traffic, but your gas needle will appreciate itas well.

On a highway, keep your windows up.Keep windows closed when travelling on the highways asopen windows cause air drag that can reduce your mileageby ten percent.

If you can, just walk!Believe it or not, you are not tied to your car! If whereyou need to go is around the road or if you work inbusiness or shopping districts like New Kingston, Half-Way-Tree, Liguanea or Downtown and you need to movefrom point A to B without moving something heavy, whynot just walk? Not only will you not use up preciousgasoline, but you stay healthy as well since walking is agreat way to exercise.

Forget about ‘flexing your muscle’.When at a stoplight, do not go for quick accelerations or‘jackrabbit’ starts when you get the green lights. All thisdoes is burn more gas. Engines require the most fuel whenaccelerating from a full stop, so apply the gas moderately.Hard braking is also a no-no!

Keep your car in good running condition. If your vehicle is regularly serviced, this will provide youwith better overall fuel efficiency. Also ensure that yourtyres are in good condition as not only can threadbareand under inflated tyres be dangerous, they can reduceyour fuel economy by up to 4%.

Travel Light.A lot of us have tons of junk in our car trunk, but did youknow that all the added weight requires that your vehicleuse more power and thus added fuel? For every 100pounds, fuel economy is reduced by up to 2 percent, especially for compact cars.

Don’t keep your car idling. When running into the pharmacy and the supermarketfor one item or even when picking up your kids fromschool, don’t leave your engine running. This isunnecessary and by far the easiest way to waste fuel.

Track you gas usage.Get a book and record each time you fill up your tank andensure that the gas attendant gives you exactly what youare paying for.

Plan for long trips. If you are a two-car household, for road trips use themore gas-friendly model, even if it is a tight squeeze asthe savings will be felt in your purse.

How about a manual? As in manual shift drive, as these cars allow you to changeto the highest gear as soon as possible, thereby letting yousave gas if you "nurse it along".

ARE FEMALEDRIVERS

REALLY WORSEON THE ROAD?

Some talk extensively on their cell phones, like to re-apply lipstickat the stoplight, are always fixing their hair in the rear-view mirrorand hit the gas pedal while rocking six-inch stilettos. Most men

may not understand the rationale behind all their actions, but is itentirely fair to simply lump all females together as ‘bad’ drivers?

For decades the argument has raged about female drivers behind thesteering wheel and whether the whole notion of females being ‘baddrivers’ is not just a myth, perpetuated by chauvinistic men who haveto make themselves feel better at the expense of the fairer sex.AutoTrendz JA sought to weigh in on this touchy topic as we look atfemale drivers and what they do when the car keys come out and therubber meets the road.

Most studies seem to go with the consensus that men appear to bemore proficient than women at certain driving tasks. However, thisslight edge in ability does not necessarily translate into better driving.

While men berate female driving habits, studies in the United Statesshow that based on several vehicular code (traffic) violations, menactually break more traffic laws and drive more dangerously thanwomen. Because they violate laws designed to make the roads safer, they therefore cause more accidents and expensive damage. The kindof accidents men get into are generally the result of their riskierbehaviour. Men are also three times as likely to be ticketed for‘aggressive driving’ than women.

Quality Planning, a company that validates policyholder informationfor auto insurers in the US, conducted a study that concluded malesare more likely to be cited for reckless driving, seat belt violations, speeding, failure to yield and stop sign/signal violations. To be morespecific, the company analyzed an entire year of policyholderinformation and found that males were cited for reckless driving 3.4times as often as females. Women, however, seem to be ‘fenderbender’ queens.

So when all is said, done, compared and analysed, there really is noconcrete evidence of women deserving the bad rap they get as driversas studies suggest that men are no angels on the road either. AutoTrendz JA conducted a vox pop amongst motoring Jamaicans to heartheir views on some touchy questions. While all answers areinteresting, some are downright hilarious. See the comments below:

Tracey Hamilton: I believe anybody who did not learn from a stickshift is among the worst drivers and since most females learned froman automatic they are the worst. Check a female that learned fromstick. They are not timid drivers, they drive automatic like a stick, meaning they change out gear. They are aggressive in a good way andhave much better judgement.

Steve McDonald: Women are conscious of continuing to live fortheir families and will take fewer chances.

Jermaine Barnaby: Honestly speaking, not all female drivers are badas you have some that control the wheels well and are a force toreckon with. For me, women are more careful with handling vehiclesthan most men!

“For me, women are more carefulwith handling vehicles than mostmen!”

28

Page 28: Autotrendz Magazine July 2014

29

Joan A. Hutchinson: Female drivers are not driven bytestosterone which forces male drivers to prove that them notmaking somebody else pass them, so they either speed or theyare fighting to get into a little space or a 'duss up a bwoy’.

Carol A. Dexter: It is my opinion and has been for over 20 yearsthat women nuh have no sense 'roun' di wheel’. Dem drive tootimid and cause confusion in the process. Not very good driversat all.

Ormine Thompson: I think women are more patient and takeless chances. I don't think women buy their licenses from the breadvan. They actually study the road code.

Daviot Kelly: Generally men are worse drivers but when youfind a woman who is bad, she terrible!!! They are either overlyaggressive or unnecessarily timid.

Marjorie Henry-Lawrence: I have never had a run in with afemale driver. Males are more dangerous on and off the road.Timidity can slow down traffic and is an annoyance, but is not themajor cause of accidents....speed is.

Ian Allen: They are worse on a whole, indecisive and cause moreaccidents. You got some men who are like them too.

Natasha Irons: ‘Worse’ needs defining as it depends on the angleyou are spinning it. Worse yes, if by that you mean that themajority of women are timid and in many cases slow to react andnot very defensive. If by worse you mean higher accidents thenno, as men statistically have more accidents and engage in far morereckless behaviour than all the shotta women combined.

Cecelia Campbell-Livingston: From my experience mostfemale drivers (apart from the exceptions) are really careful onthe road. While they don't crawl, they are not likely to take onthe Dover raceway syndrome that men adopt behind the wheel.Women are level headed and don't get excited by the need forspeed as men do. I'm not saying this because I am a woman, butwhen it comes to responsible thinking and driving, I hand it to thewomen drivers.

Fern White-Hilsenrath: A look at the raw numbers shows thata high percentage of road mishaps are caused by men. Just ask theNational Road Safety Council. Women are less likely to buylicences, drag race down Hope Road and a load of crap thatinconveniences both pedestrians and other drivers alike. Also, asa rule, women don't leave the scene of accidents.

Summer is approaching and there is nothing like getting somegood old country air into your lungs. With super-hot partieslike ATI and Sumfest, as well as your own yearning to see

family and friends far from the madness of the city, there is nothinglike a good getaway to relax you.

But before your load up the kids and the SUV, before shoppingfor a cute outfit for the ultimate “girls’ weekend getaway”, hereare some pointers to bear in mind if you desire a great road trip.

Type of persons travelling with you. This is critical to anysuccessful trip. If you have to travel with a whiny or impatientperson or someone who has severe ADD (Attention DeficitDisorder), it is probably best to leave them behind or let themdrive on their own if patience is not one of your many virtues!Personality clashing is the quickest way to sour what couldpotentially be a great trip (not to mention losing a friend!).

Have an up-to-date map. Getting lost means wasted time andexpensive gas, so download the ‘Google Map’ app on your cellphone and it is still a good idea to get a traditional road map fromthe gas station.

Pre-plan fun ways to pass the time. A road trip usually lastfor several hours, so plan ways to pass the time so that the longdrive does not become tedious. If your passengers are mostlychildren, remember they get bored easily. Sing songs (or get themto make up funny ones along the way), tell stories or pack theirfavourite colouring book and crayons to keep them occupied. Ifit is an all-adult affair, you can tell jokes and make it a competitionto see who tells the best (or the worst) jokes. You can also switchdrivers every two to three hours, so that everyone gets somerest.

Be prepared for stops along the way. Any good road tripsshould include stops and not just the ones needed for therestroom. Plan for excursions along the way, like stopping at aroad-side fruit stall for delicious, fresh fruits, lunch at a scenicrestaurant, touring a farm, visiting an attraction and havingeveryone stretch their legs and recharge their batteries.

Set a budget. Trips can end up costing more than you originallybargained for, so before leaving it is wise to calculate the cost ofgasolene both ways. If you are planning to stay in a hotel, call andget rates ahead of time and always ask for a group rate discount. You then factor in your meals, money for toll fees (unless you are

Page 30: Autotrendz Magazine July 2014

FOR A GREAT ROAD TRIP

going on the ‘scenic’ routes) and also incidentals. Ensure you havean emergency ‘just in case’ fund as your back up.

Don’t travel during rush hour. Either leave home very earlyor late in the day when the traffic has died down. Being stuck inbumper-to-bumper traffic is a waste of fuel and energy.

Carry the basics. Why pay for what you have lying around athome? Always carry stuff like lotion, towels (unless you go to a5-star, all-inclusive hotel), snacks, fruits such as oranges, somesandwiches (in case you get stuck down a country lane or onMount Rosser!) and always have bottled water on hand.

Be aware of your dietary and medical restrictions. If youknow you have to eat at a certain time, plan you rest stops aroundthis time. If you have to take medication, pack it before everythingelse because leaving it means wasted hours turning back or tryingto find a pharmacy. Always carry a first-aid kit, painkillers, hydrogen peroxide for cuts and bruises, travel sickness pills orpacks of ginger powder for delicate tummies. If you are vegetarian, you should bear in mind that Jamaica is by and large a carnivore’sparadise, so you may need to pack some of your favourite food(nuts, veggie chunk, fruits, biscuits, etc.) to be on the safe side.

(note: Jerk chicken stalls do not carry side orders of pasta or threebeans salad. Middle Quarters shrimp vendors do not offer tofu asan option!)

Don’t leave home without it! Your camera (how else tocapture the moment when you run into Brad Pitt or Beyonce atSomerset Falls?), a towel, wet wipes, newspaper for ‘just in case’moments, plastic bags to collect garbage until it can be properlydisposed of, tissue (when you got to go, you got to go!), a sharpknife, flashlight with new batteries and bulb, phone charger andwhen was the last time you put air in the spare tyre? Now is agood time!

Safety on the Road. Be sure to have the car checked out andserviced before a long trip. While travelling, be vigilant, watch outfor cars that may appear suspicious. Do not flash a lot of moneyaround to attract the wrong kind of attention. Leave the jewelleryat home. Let family or friends know where you will be going andwith whom you are travelling. Leave more than one contactnumber and call in periodically along the way.

With all that said and hopefully done, start your engine and havefun!

Following one’s dreams is oftentimes not easy, as anythingworth having usually requires sacrifice and dedication to staythe course and remain committed to your goal, no matter

how challenging it may seem at times.

One person who knows all about following her dreams is AudreyReid, a trained automotive technician who is not only excelling inher chosen profession, but doing so in a manner that is giving backon many levels.

Now an automotive teacher at her alma mater, Tarrant HighSchool in Kingston, Reid is indeed the driving force behind herstudents’ success; a teacher, a nurturer and at times a mother forthem to talk to and confide in. For the past 15 years she has beenmaking her mark through shaping young minds and mouldingskilled individuals, both male and female for a brighter andprosperous future in the industry that she loves. She instills inthem a sense of pride in their ability, as well as pride in themselveswhich is equally important.

Currently, Reid has close to 40 students under her wings includingone female being trained in the interesting and intricate field ofautomotive service. Over the years, she has maintained at least

an 80% pass rate among her students and has taught a couplehundred pupils, many of whom have gone on to their ownsuccessful career path. At Tarrant, the course was previously theNCTVET modular one but they have switched to the HEARTAutomotive Service and Repair Auto-Mechanic curriculum. Reid’sGrade 10 and 11 students do the CVQ exams and in 2013, sheentered 11 students and got 8 passes so it’s an 88% pass rate.

Miss Reid shared that she takes a comprehensive approach toteaching. “I use the curriculum as well as the internet, find outwhat students at other schools are doing so as to integrate theirlearning and make it easier for them. I also prepare students’ handouts and study guides so the technology and terminology is notoverwhelming for them. I have one female student. It seems eachyear there is one female. In 2009, my female student Shauna Leegot the highest grade in her year group.”

Being a female teacher in a field that is so testosterone drivendoes have its own set of challenges but she is more than up forthe task. “I do have challenges, but you have to allow students totrust you and know that you have their interest at heart. I callthem my kids as they give trouble but are always helpful and caring.”

Page 32: Autotrendz Magazine July 2014

Audrey got her formal training at NCTVET and interned at JAGAS.She would eventually teach at JAGAS part time for a year as wellas STATHS. Being a female back then, she may have seemed likea novelty to those around her but she knew she was in it for thelong haul, soaking up all the knowledge she could. “I rememberwhen I was teaching at STATHS, the supervisor came in and satin the class like one of the students and asked a lot of questionsto seemingly test my competence and in the end was veryimpressed with my skill level. I took it all in stride.”

The last of 10 children and one half of a twin, Audrey was inspiredto enter the fuel-injected world of cars and auto mechanics by herolder brother Winston. “He has always been my inspiration. Hewas classified as one of Jamaica’s top engineers in the 80s. He wasalso my teacher at JAGAS and he showed no preferentialtreatment at all. He has since migrated to Canada and has workedwith Chevrolet, among other top companies. He taught me to notonly go for my dreams but aim higher so that in case you fall, youare still ahead of the game.”

Interestingly, Reid was also trained at the Jamaica MaritimeInstitute where she was rose to the position of a lieutenant whereshe thrived, loving the experience both in terms of travelling todifferent places like Cuba and Florida, and the remuneration, whichwas good. But even as an officer, the hours were very long, sometimes up to 16 hours at sea, so eventually she decided thatalthough she was happy to live out part of her dream she wantedto come back to shore. “This is why I tell my students that nomatter how hard it gets, always pursue your dreams.”

As every good teacher knows, the daily trail of keeping studentsengaged and interested is never easy, especially in today’s climatewhere there are so many distractions. “There are severalchallenges, chief among them is dealing with students who areindisciplined. Also getting parts and material for demonstrations

in classes, plus securing job placements even for work experiencefor her students.

Presently, the automotive students are collectively working onbuilding a go-kart from a lawn mower engine and the grade tengroup tackled two different projects, including one for the LosAngeles Robotic fair. It is all about using basic nuts and bolts toconstruct a robot.

Students

Dwight Porter, age 15, Grade 10-3. “I have been in this class sinceSeptember 2013 and it’s fun and interesting. Sometimes it’s hard, but Miss Reid breaks it down for us to understand. My career goalis to be an automotive designer.”

Laquifa Lafayette, a 17-year-old senior in Grade 11-2 who wantsto be a mechanical engineer and a haulage contractor, said thatfor him Miss Reid’s classes are very hands-on. “In each class, it’sa new experience. Miss Reid is inspiring and sees things on ourlevel.”

17-year-old Nah-jair Williams, who desires a future career as apilot or an engineer, added that Miss Reid’s classes are informative.“I learn stuff I always wanted to learn. Her interaction makes meunderstand the concepts she teaches.”

Zahare Nash, 17, a Grade 5 Senior. “Her classes are fun and shemakes learning easy. She helps us not only in class but with ourfamily life as well. When I leave school, I hope to be an automotiveengineer and a soldier.

Jesse Johnson, 17 of Grade 11-4 said the best thing about the classhe attends is that whatever you cannot grasp, Miss Reid will ensurethat you understand it. “She also helps with the assignments weget from our other teachers.”

You worked hard, saved up a portion of your meagre paycheck, gave up partying, drinking with friends on a Fridaynight and even learned to cut your eyes while going past the

sales rack in your favourite store. You made the sacrifice to buyyour own ride so that your friends do not have to complain aboutcarrying you everywhere, and your newfound independence issweet. That is until you go outside one day and your ‘Little Betsy’is missing.

That initial moment when you realise that your car has been stolenhits you in the pit of your stomach like a ton of bricks. While itmay be of no consolation in your time of distress, please know thatfour or more cars are stolen in Jamaica daily. Auto Trendz JA isgiving you the breakdown on the most stolen cars, which issomething to consider in case you are thinking of going carshopping. We also throw in some key pointers on what to do tothwart those pesky thieves who can turn your dream into anightmare.

In the United States, the Honda tops the list of the most stolenmodel, with the Accord and Civic being a premium find for thieves. The U.S. National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) compiles anannual report or ‘vehicle theft data’ which is submitted by lawenforcement officers across the country that tracks vehicles, downto their make, model and year of manufacture.

Back at home our system is nowhere as advanced, but our policefiles show that while the Honda is also sought after, it is the ToyotaCorolla that has the dubious distinction of being the most stolen. They are relatively cheap, durable on these bad roads but mostimportantly, very common-place so no one will bat an eye if onepasses that ‘kinda look familiar’. Sadly the recovery rate for stolenvehicles is very low and most times the police only get wind ofillegal activities in neighbourhoods after many vehicles have beenstripped, chopped up or burnt out in cases where they are usedto commit crimes.

Toyota is followed by Nissan, as the need for parts for thesepopular brands make them a huge target. Both new and oldermodels alike are fair game as it is the parts that are valuable, notso much the cars. Those that may find their way onto a car lot willhave the requisite modifications done with chassis and enginenumbers scratched off.

Stolen cars are not only a nightmare for the owners, but also theinsurance companies as each year losses close to $2billion areracked up, oftentimes leading to higher insurance premiums. Thisis a headache not only borne by those who have felt the hurt ofcar theft, but generally everyone wishing to get motor vehicleinsurance. Nowadays, it is a given that drivers who own vehiclesconsidered ‘high risk’ for theft may pay higher insurance policy fees. The Insurance Association of Jamaica (IAJ) once disclosed that onaverage four reports of auto-theft are made daily.

It may be helpful for you to note that the white Toyota Corolla isthe number one pick on thieves’ wish list. White cars are the moststolen vehicles period as they are common and therefore notdistinctive. Gray is the second colour of choice. Black and red arenot very popular and orange and gold cars are like elephants—toohard to hide or pass police spot checks.

So because they are considered sturdy vehicles and models peopletrust, you have to make it harder for someone to simply drive awaywith all your hopes, dreams, not to mention hard-earned money.Stealing has gotten high tech and more sophisticated as time andtechnology evolves. Locksmiths, mechanics and repair men caneven assist thieves in ‘relieving’ you of the responsibility of yourmotor vehicle.

But all is not lost. Invest in good quality alarms, kill switches andother anti-theft devices. They may not completely prevent youfrom losing your investment, but they will at least slow them downso you do not pop in for a beer at your favourite local bar and turnaround to hear your engine gunning down the road.

Check with the Stolen Motor Vehicle Unit before making any carpurchase; always lock your doors; do not leave the keys in yourvehicle or lying around (they can be duplicated); avoidneighbourhoods that are considered high risk, and when attendingbig events eg. at the National Stadium, hitch a ride or take a cab.At the end of the Football match, you will not be the one scratchingyour head and lamenting about the empty space where your carwas parked.

Much has been written and said about the Jamaica UrbanTransit Company (JUTC) over the years, some good andsome bad, but we can all agree that the present public

transportation system is definitely a step up from what existedbefore.

Remember the days of the Encava buses and the ‘quarter million’that ran everyone and everything off the roads as they sped aboutlike demons on the roadways causing accidents and at timesfatalities? These franchise holders were a liability in every senseof the word. Based on everything from insurance claims toemergency rooms visits, there is proof that they made gettingfrom point A to B a dangerous situation.

We have come a far way since the days of the good old JamaicaOmnibus Service (JOS), the grandfather of the bus service. Todaywe have a modern fleet of buses that are an easy way to get aroundtown. JUTC has evolved since its establishment and though thereare many hiccups, it is slowly making its way to profitability. AutoTrendz JA looks at the JUTC bus service and their way forwardas they seek to be a force to be reckoned with.

Founded in 1999, JUTC is the government-owned bus serviceoperating within the Kingston Metropolitan Transit Region(KMTR), Spanish Town and Portmore, with over 70 routes.Headquartered in Rockfort, they are currently exploring smalleroperations in places such as Ocho Rios and Montego Bay.Although they compete with the privately-owned route buses andtaxis, legally the JUTC is the only provider of transit services inthe KMTR with an express service operating on a differentschedule and fare structure.

Currently, the fleet encompasses more than 400 buses which areprimarily yellow though a few older buses are still in the originalwhite. In 2009, they all but phased out the need for conductorson the buses as driver began their own fare collection, except onthe larger articulated buses. Recently, there has been a continuedpush for the buses to become ‘cash-less’ as soon as possible asthis will assist with passenger flow and movement onto the buses, plus it will be a huge deterrent to sporadic robberies as well asrevenue leakage. With this in mind, some 60,000 ‘smarter cards’will be distributed to the public in preparation for a transition toits proposed cashless system.

According to their website, the JUTC’s mission is ‘to provide acustomer-oriented, safe, reliable, modern, cost-effectivetransportation service through teamwork and good conditions ofemployment.’ However, over the years they have been plaguedwith a lack of spare parts, breakdowns and low fleet availabilitywhich resulted in an overall service that left many passengers

constantly complaining. Recently, these complaints havedecreased significantly as two consignments of 50 buses each wereadded to the fleet, all air-conditioned and with state-of-the arefeatures, including surveillance facilities and other public safetyfeatures. A batch of new and highly-specialised buses equippedwith ramps to accommodate wheelchair-bound passengers wasalso acquired to serve the disabled community along three majorroutes. Staff members were also trained in sensitivity and patience, which are required to serve the disabled community.

In addition to their regular service, JUTC also offers charterservice, specializing in travel arrangements for medium-sized tolarge groups. They offer flexible arrangements including VIPservice, corporate event shuttles, regional church conventions, school outings, community excursions, fun days, beach parties, performing groups, spectator support for team-away games, graduation ceremonies, and family events such as funerals. Theirsupport system includes ongoing contact between the bus andcentral control, giving a higher level of comfort for passenger safetyand security. The features of the buses include air-conditioning,reclining seats, extended luggage compartments, on-boardbathroom facility, experienced and professional crew, TV, DVDand stereo, plus a public address system.

For years the company has been haemorrhaging as it struggles tonot be a burden on the government and taxpayers. The subsidieson fares for the elderly, students and the disabled have been saidto be costing the company, but these are still in place for themoment. In late 2013, the company sought to make theiroperation more profitable and stop the almost-million-dollar-per-day bleeding by discontinuing its transfer service.

In March of 2014, JUTC’s new head of the Franchise ProtectionUnit, Radcliffe Lewis announced that they would be cracking downon bus preaching and the indisciplined school children who behavebadly at the back of the buses during peak hours, both morningand evening. A move welcomed by adults who had to deal withsaid children on a daily basis.

In early 2014, JUTC also announced that they would be takingback some of their franchise routes in the KMTR, including thevery busy and competitive Duhaney Park to Half-Way-Tree route(32B) as well as the Duhaney Park to Downtown route (31A).This was not a popular decision with the coaster and minibusoperators and there were not only protests, but several JUTCbuses were vandalised along the routes after they took over onApril 1, 2014. Since then, many have gotten with the programmeand have become part of the system and not part of the problem, adopting the yellow branding with the colours of the flag at thefront of the buses.

All road users are required to exercise caution in their dailyuse of the road network in Jamaica to get to theirdestinations; however, motor vehicle drivers are charged

with an even greater level of responsibility for themselves, theirpassengers, other motorists and pedestrians.

A local study conducted by the Mona GeoInformaticsInstitute, based at The University of the West Indies, whichtracked 72,000 crashes over an eleven year period, found that“the vast majority of crashes are caused by drivers” and attributedmore than 89% of crashes over the period to driver behaviour. It further revealed that the main causes for these crashes wererelated to: tailgating, overtaking, speeding, distracted driving, impairment from drugs, alcohol and fatigue.

Duane Ellis, General Manager of the Jamaica AutomobileAssociation (JAA), says the figures emphasised the importantresponsibility of motor vehicle drivers every time they get behindthe wheel and why care must always be taken when operating avehicle. Additionally, he pointed out that we need to ensure thatour drivers can safely operate their vehicles, drive with dueconsideration to other road users and observe the rules of theroad.

To this end, the JAA has created the ‘Driver ImprovementProgramme’ a multifaceted driver training course, which goesbeyond instructing drivers about the technical aspects of driving;and, also equips them with skills that will enable them to be betterroad users. “With the Driver Improvement Programme, we aimto reduce the risks associated with driving by helping drivers toanticipate dangerous situations, despite adverse conditions, or themistakes of others,” he explained.

Ellis further explained that the Driver Improvement Programmewill provide participants with techniques that will help them toimprove their driving skills and assist them to reduce the risk of

associated with driving by helping them to anticipate dangeroussituations.

The course is divided into to two parts and is undertaken in fourto five teaching hours in small and accessible classes in addition toa one hour driving assessment. Gosma Buddoo, Member Servicesand Communication Manager at the JAA, says the course, whichis suitable for all drivers, can be of special benefit to persons whodrive professionally. He stated that the main aim of the programmewill be to foster behavior change among participants in how theyoperate on the road and interact with other road users.

Buddoo also outlined that both the theoretical and practicalaspects of the course will include input and instruction fromrepresentatives of the JAA, the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF)and the Island Traffic Authority, to support the detailed trainingmaterial. In addition, each section of the course will be assessedto determine whether the student successfully completed thetraining.

“At the end of the course each participant will receive a certificateof achievement which will allow insurance companies to consideraccident forgiveness for their clients as well as assure an employerthat a driver has received valuable training.”

For the Stewarts Automotive Group, giving back is just as importantas operating a successful business so they have always made an effortto make a difference in the lives of Jamaicans across the length andbreadth of the island. By tackling the plight of the less fortunate oneproject at a time, they continue to showcase their tremendouscapacity to care as well as make their actions speak as loudly as theirwords.

In a world where the everyday obligations of family, friends, schooland work dominate our waking hours, it is easy to forget that whilewe sleep comfortably at night, many are in need of basic supplies thatwe sometimes take for granted. It is the exceptional human beingwho stops to consider that there is much merit to giving of oneselffreely and that by giving, we receive our blessings.

That is the lesson learnt by the founders of Kind Hearts Limitedwhose core is comprised of the youngsters who are the grandchildrenof Richard and Diana Stewart, heads of the revered automotivedynasty, Stewarts Automotive Group. Blessed with a passion for givingassistance and making a valuable contribution toward the developmentof their nation, their charity work that is hands-on and meaningful, has changed the lives of some of the most vulnerable members ofsociety—our children.

Spearheaded by the oldest grandchild, Christina Lechler, Kind Heartshas made bold strides in impacting the lives of children born in lessfortunate circumstances, mainly through the gift of an education, which is one gift no one can ever steal from an individual. As Christinatells it, the idea for a charity where they could utilise their fundraisingskills as well as their own physical labour, came about after adiscussion with their grandparents.

“They were very keen about us learning from early to give back tothe society. Our grandparents had their own foundation, the Richard

and Diana Stewart Foundation, where they did a lot for charity. They felt it would be a good idea for us to do projects together, because since we would be a part of the family business, wehad to learn to work together. They thought that a charitywould be a good starting point for us to focus on what we seeis needed.”

Amanda Lechler brainstormed the name and she along withChristina, James, Richard, Timothy and Stephanie got to workand in 2009 had their first major project. Teaming up with aMontego Bay initiative dubbed ‘Youth With A Mission’ theybuilt two houses for needy families living in St. James. Thefollowing year they repeated the feat and built two more houses.

But while building a house fills an immediate need, educatinga small rural population has a more lasting impact on an entirecommunity. Kind Hearts sought to form a collaboration withrespected charity organization Food for the Poor, experts inbuilding low-income structures, and the results of theirconjoined efforts have both organizations smiling at theoutcome. Their work also made them the first family, as wellas the first set of young Jamaicans, to actually partner withFood for the Poor in their school building project.

“Someone had suggested that we should work with Food forthe Poor as they have the skill set and resources that couldenhance the quality of our charity work since they actuallyrestructure basic schools. They invited me to the opening ofa school in May Pen, Clarendon that was done by an overseasgroup and I saw how the process worked. I jumped on that asyou can help so many more children through education andthus do more for their communities."

Their approach to fundraising is multi-dimensional as they seeksupport from both corporate donors as well as children inschools who want to make a difference. From bake sales, jeansdays and private donations, they along with their friends, werehard at work drumming up support. Christina even had abirthday party and instead of gifts for herself, she asked thather guests make donations to her charity. It took them twoyears of steady fundraising but the hard work paid off.

First up was tackling a basic school in Greenvale, Manchester, whichthey did last summer since the Manchester Chamber of Commercehad brought the need to the attention of Food for the Poor.Incredibly, they not only helped to raise over US$40,000.00 butactually assisted with the physical construction. The fruit of their hardlabour was that much sweeter when the smiles of gratitude on thefaces of the children were turned in their direction.

School Principal, Gloria McKenzie, was delighted to receive the keysto the new B. Frank Early Childhood Institution in October 2012.Recently they received electricity courtesy of the Jamaica PublicService.

Their next school was on a slightly grander scale as Food for the Poorrevamped their building model to include furnishing and a playground, hence Christina and company at Kind Hearts knew they had theirwork cut out for them in fundraising again, but they were up to thechallenge. Lluidas Vale in St Catherine was the proposed site of theirnext construction as the basic school there is currently being housedin a tiny room behind a church. The plan is to build a fully-functionalbasic school beside the Top Hill Primary School.

“We are trying to make these schools as sustainable as possible sothat they will be there long after we are gone. We not only raise fundsand awareness, but also pitch in manually, so when it comes to theactual building we need more young people to help us and we need

donations of books, pencils and lots of stationery supplies thatchildren will need everyday to open up their imagination tothe wonderful opportunities made possible througheducation.”

In years gone by when we discovered something rusting, we woulddiscard it and if it was inexpensive, simply go out and buy a newone. In today’s economy, we have come to not only appreciatethe quality of items made before the ‘disposable era’ of the 21st

century, but we also do not have the disposable income to throwaway stuff, so we have to find ways and methods to care for themwhenever it is possible.

Here comes Rust Cure to the rescue for many a household asits versatility is unquestioned and the results simply speak forthemselves.

Rust is the result of a chemical reaction between iron and oxygen. When an oxygen molecule comes into contact with an ironmolecule, it forms iron oxide, or rust, and it's more than just aneyesore. If left untreated, rust can ultimately ruin whatever objectit affects. As the corrosion process continues, more metal isexposed to rust, which eventually weakens the metal to the pointwhere it either crumbles or is no longer useful. Whenever youdiscover rust on a valuable possession, it's important to removeit as quickly as possible.

Corrosion, which is another name for rust, is an environmentally-destructive force and if left untreated, will eventually weaken themetal to the point where it is no longer useful.

This is where CPL Rust Cure steps in to protect your valuableinvestment and extend the lifespan of your precious metal objects,

many of which were probably passeddown from generation to generation andare antiques, keepsakes and even yourcar. When you think of all the manyhands that have loved and cherishedthese items, you know that you have toinvest in CPL Rust Cure to make themas good as new.

Rust Cure has numerous uses, one ofwhich is limescale removal. Affordable, convenient and easy to use, there are basic instructions you shouldfollow to make CPL Rust Cure transform your precious metals, especially your vehicles and have them looking shiny and new.

Instructions:

First, spray the rusted surface with CPL Rust Cure, enough tothoroughly soak the area. After you've sprayed the surface, allowit to sit for up to 15 minutes before you proceed. CPL RustCure works wonders to break down the bond between metaland rust, though it requires a little time to give the best results.

Secondly, use a wire brush on the surface you soaked with CPLRust Cure. With the rust loosened, the brush should clean awaythe corrosion. Brush the surface until you're satisfied you haveremoved the rust.

Page 46: Autotrendz Magazine July 2014

Thirdly, spray another application of CPL Rust Cure on thesurface and let it sit once again for five to ten minutes. ReapplyCPL Rust Cure as needed for stubborn areas of rust. Allow itto soak before you continue sanding or brushing.

Then rub the area with steel wool to buff the metal and removethe smallest remnants of rust. If you plan on painting the surface, make sure to wash it thoroughly before applying the paint orprimer.

Developed some 20 years ago, CPL Rust Cure is a recognisedbrand based on its quality and is steadily increasing in popularitydue to its excellent rust retardation properties. An agent ofamazing transformation, it removes all traces of rust from metalsurfaces, prevents further rusting and preserves the metal. It isparticularly effective on water tanks, motor vehicles, boats, gates, zinc fences, grill work and other steel structures. CPL RustCure also acts as an inhibitor for long periods, ensuringprotection of the surface until you are ready to prime and paint.Ultimately, CPL Rust Cure protects your valuable investmentand extends its life.

CPL Rust Cure is made and distributed by Carichem ProductsLimited (CPL), a Jamaican, family-owned and operatedmanufacturing company. CPL actively produces a number ofquality chemical products that are environmentally friendly—primarily Bondcrete and Rust Cure, while packaging anddistributiing other products such as thinners, glues and otherperipheral products for the construction and furniture industry.

CPL BONDCRETE has been produced and used for overThirty Five (35) years in Jamaica without one single reportedproduct failure, under some of the most exacting conditions. The vibrant blue colour and exceptional bonding strength is theirtrademark of excellence.

Bondcrete is a concrete bonding agent that adheres to new orold concrete, concrete blocks, concrete slabs, cement coating, masonry, plaster, stone, brick, cinder blocks, columns, stuccoand hardboard. It can be used indoors or out, over dry or wetsurfaces. It should, however, not be used where the material willbe constantly exposed to water or hydrostatic pressure. Knownin the industry to be the best bonding agent, it is far superior toall others and is asked for by name.

Of the thousands of parts that collectively combine tocreate a motor vehicle, the tyre plays one of the mostimportant roles in terms of safety, stability and of course,

to keep it moving from point A to B with ease. It is with thisknowledge of the significance of the tyre to motorists thatChad-Ad Distributors ensures that every tyre sold is not only ofexceptional quality but its performance is guaranteed, if usedcorrectly.

With more than a decade and a half of service under their belt,Chad-Ad Distributors knows not only their products but alsowhat their customers needs are generally so as to make thenecessary adjustment in not only an economy that is sluggish attimes, but an industry that is super competitive.

A leading distributor that stocks not only tyres but a wide rangeof batteries and lubricants for all vehicles (commercial and non–commercial), Chad-Ad Distributors is the discerning motorist’sone-stop when seeking value for money, as well as the place forpersons who have in-depth knowledge of the products they areselling. Built on customer satisfaction and relations, Chad-AdDistributors has simply made superior service their signature. AsManager Nicholas McKoy explains, both management and staffpride themselves on their provision of quality and that is exactlywhat customers expect every single time. This expectation keepsthem coming back, sale after sale, year after year.

“We offer the widest range for all different applications andvehicles. We have passenger cars, commercial, light trucks andheavy trucks, industrial and forklift and very reliable brandsincluding Maxxis. We also distribute battery and lubricants thoughtyres are our main staple. Recently we also started distributeRAIN-X brand of glass cleaners as we continue to extend ourvariety of products that keeps our vehicles in tip-top condition.”

Now the name ‘Chad-Ad’ is rather unusual and beggedexplanation. “It is based on the names of the director’s children(Chad and Adam). Over the years, we realised that because thename did not focus on tyres, we haven’t really gotten our due inthe industry but our quality products have still carried us through, especially with a leading tyre provider like Maxxis. You find peoplewant consistency with a brand, so even though they don’t usuallychange all four tyres at once, whenever a change is required theywant it to match up.”

Tyres are their life blood and as McKoy added, an essentialcomponent that makes direct contact with the road while bearingthe entire weight of the vehicle and its content, therefore a lotof thought needs to go into the selection and purchasing of tyres. It is also very important to maintain correct air pressure and torotate and check alignment regularly to ensure their optimumperformance, safety and longevity. Even though they recommendtheir flagship brand Maxxis as the best value for money andguarantees the best cost per mile in comparison to competingbrands in the market, Chad-Ad Distributors Limited does offerother brands at a lower price point to suit every need.

Customers can choose from their variety of recognised qualitybrands including Sumtiomo, Falken, Sailun (tyres), Petro-Canada,Shell, Amsoil, Total (lubricants), Miatsu, AC Delco, TropicalBattery and Power Plus (batteries).

In addition to sales, Chad-Ad also offers a wide range of services, including minor tyre repairs, tyre mounting, balancing, nitrogeninflation, free battery checks and installation, as well as forklift tyrepressing. Customers can also ask about passenger and commercialtyre installation and balancing. “Our customers know a good dealwhen they see one, which is why they head to Chad-Ad forsuperior products and brand consistency. We have two locations, here at 87-91 First Street at Newport West, as well as ourconvenient retail store at 78 Marcus Garvey Drive and regardlessof the location, our customers are always met by friendly, courteous and knowledgeable staff that are ready and willing toaddress any of your automotive needs.”

“We have competitive prices and although we are not thecheapest, we have the best value for money and best cost per milein comparison to competitive brands. Wehave lost customers in the past tocheaper alternatives, but they usuallycome back, and in the end theyunderstand that quality isimportant above all else. Whatmakes Chad-Ad different is thatwe strive for the best customerservice, educate our staff andstand behind our product 100%if there is ever any issue.”

…much more than just tyres

We see them occasionally on display, at big events orduring a parade and we have long admired thecraftsmanship, the mystique and the general aura they

exude as they remind us of a bygone era when cars were amongthe greatest invention of the 20th century.

Indeed classic cars are always a head turner and crowd pleaserfor both the old as well as the young, but what do we know aboutclassic cars in Jamaica and why are we all so fascinated by themthat when we see one in mint condition we hold our breath justa little bit before exhaling with a huge “Wow!”.

Auto Trendz JA sought to delve into the whole phenomenon ofclassic cars in the island and caught up with not only the currentpresident of the Classic Car Club of Jamaica, Shane Angus, butalso his predecessor Nigel McFarlane and both men sat down andexplained to us the luxury, the legacy and the lifestyle behindclassic cars and why people from all walks of life and age, gravitatetoward these cars, many of which are close to a century old.

The Classic Car Club started more than 23 years ago when agroup of car enthusiasts gathered in the late 1980s to first gaugethe interest of like-minded individuals. The club was formallyincorporated in February 1989 with Andre Hylton serving as itsfirst president. Its founding members along with Hylton wereVincent Lee, Ronald Channer, Mario Hernandez and Garth Ramsey.

As Angus explained, the whole concept behind it was not only topreserve the hobby of collecting and restoring cars, but to alsomaintain a legacy since a lot of the cars bear significance inpreserving certain aspects of Jamaica’s history. Additionally, itshould also be noted that back in the days of the turbulent 70s

with the whole uncertainty and upheaval that existed in theisland, several persons opted to ship their vehicles overseas

so the Classic Car Club is a way of bringing back that loveand prominence to Jamaica.”

Their first event took place in December 1989 onthe grounds of at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel andthis was followed by a huge show dubbed ‘LivingHistory’ held at the national arena. In the earlyyears, meetings were held at the YMCA butpresently members meet once a month at

various locations all over the island so that members outside ofKingston can also participate.

In May of 1994, they brokered a deal with insurance giants ICWIfor preferential rates for classic cars and soon after were successfulin their petition of the then government to incorporate into theImportation Act, a clause for classic cars which became reality inMay 1995. Though their efforts over the years to have anestablished club house has fallen through, they were able to launchtheir website www.jamaicaclassiccarclub.com in 1999 and sincethat time, have participated in a number of memorable eventsincluding several independence Grand Galas.

The Classic Car Club has approximately eighty members currently,of which about forty are active. Interestingly, you don’t have toown a classic car to be a member but you have to be referred bya member and be a car enthusiast. The club has roughly 200 cars

but only about 100 are in running order. The three oldest cars inthe club are a 1926 Chevrolet superior, a 1931 Ford Model A anda 1936 V8 Ford.

Despite the age of most of the vehicles, maintenance McFarlaneshared, is not as difficult as one would think. “Because they arenot driven every day, it is not as difficult to maintain them. In termsof parts, once you are in the club you will be privy to a lot ofinformation. For example, I have a 1970 MGB and I overhauledthe engine and I was able to source all the parts locally. And if theyare not available locally, there are clubs overseas so you can goonline and order it, once you know where to look. There are fourplaces in Jamaica now that still have parts for British cars as theBritish built their cars pretty much standard.”

The main challenge as a classic car owner, he says, will be thefinances. “Some people just don’t have the money to restore the

Page 51: Autotrendz Magazine July 2014
Page 52: Autotrendz Magazine July 2014

cars properly and that affects participation. Then some have themoney but don’t have the time that it takes to deal with a fullrestoration. There is this belief that your cars have to be in mintcondition, which is not true as we welcome all owners. There isalso the misconception that the longer you hold the car, the moreit values but a classic car only goes up in value if it is in mintcondition and constantly maintained. If you have it sit down undera mango tree, it is not increasing in value. It will eventually becomescrap metal!”

The club, Angus said, is a store house of knowledge and expertiseas for a lot of members, cars are their passion, indeed their lives.“It is a hobby, yes it can be expensive, but it is fun as at the endof a hard week you can meet up with other enthusiasts and talkabout cars or just go driving.”

Classic cars can also be a good income earner as corporatecompanies can pay owners to wrap their vehicles with theirlogo/branding for special events. They are also used in musicvideos, commercials, at weddings and a lot of high profile events. You just have to make sure you vehicle is in good condition.

The club will be participating in several events during the upcomingsummer, including a show at Hope Gardens in June and a hugeAuto Show in September also in Kingston where over 80 cars willbe on display. For President Shane, this is a great opportunity formore people to not only be aware of the club but those who havea passion for cars, to become active members. “We would like totake the opportunity to open the door to new members includingyoung people and we not only accept European models butJapanese as well.”

And why does he believe Jamaicans are so fascinated with classiccars? “For the young people, they are seeing cars they didn’t knowexisted. Plus, the styling of these cars doesn’t exist anymore. Forthe business side, it is a store of value. For the older generationof men and women it is about the nostalgia of it all, from their oldparty days as well as back when their parents took them to schoolin some of these models. Think about it: anybody can get a newcar, but a classic car is a treasure.”

Twenty years ago we were not a nation of cell phone junkies.Back in the ‘old days’ people communicated in person andif you had a date and could not make it at the last minute

then the other party would be left hanging because if they wereon the road there was no means of letting them know you had tocancel.

Cellular phones have done a world of good as technology hasmade it more convenient to do research, share a smile with afriend, talk to your cousin in Australia and generally make lifeeasier. There is an ‘app’ that explains the weather. If traffic is aheadand you want to ‘hear’ your favourite book, well, they can do thatas well. Cell phones have also made it way too easy to embarrasseach other not to mention ourselves with the snap of a photo andthe posting of things that are definitely ‘PG’ rated.

When it comes to cell phones and driving we have also goneoverboard. We talk and drive and at times concentrate so hardon what is being said that the road is no longer our primary focus.Have you ever seen someone doing crazy things in a car and thenrealise they were on a cell phone the whole time? Well, that iswhat prompted us to look at cell phone etiquette when driving. It may not only make you a better driver, it may actually save yourlife.

Research conducted in the United States details the dangers ofdistracted driving. The New York Times reported that driversusing phones are four times more likely to cause a crash thanother drivers, and the likelihood that they will crash is equal tothat of someone with a .08 percent blood alcohol level, the pointat which drivers are generally considered intoxicated. AdditionallyMedical News Today posted new data which showed thatmotorists have greater difficultly maintaining a fixed speed, orstaying in one lane when performing tasks that simulatedconversing on a mobile phone. Contrary to popular belief, speaking and listening were equally distracting. Research alsoindicates that hands-free devices do not eliminate the risks.

The following tips are simple and easy to follow: -

DO NOT…use your phone by the gas pump. It is believedthat static electricity can ignite the vapor that comes from the gas

so when phones are lit up or are in use they become a danger tonot only the user but those in the immediate vicinity. Gasolineexplosions are particularly nasty, so safety in that regard is alwaysessential.

DO NOT…text while driving. There are been many gruesomeinternet pictures highlighting the consequences of persons textingwhile driving. Scattered limbs and body parts across the asphalt isno way for your loved ones to remember you. When you takeyour eyes off the road, accidents will happen and more often thannot, they can be fatal.

DO…invest in hands-free devices. They don’t eliminate therisks, but can significantly reduce them.

DO NOT…talk for long periods. If the phone rings and youthink it is important, answer and make it known that you areoperating a vehicle. Then ask the person to share the informationas concisely as possible. Hearing about your best friend’s datinglife or discussing an upcoming business meeting should not be anoption. Conversations are distracting, no matter how good adriver you are.

DO NOT...play cell phone games when you are sitting ata stop light. Take the time to observe your surroundings andwho has pulled up beside or behind you. Look out for pedestrians, beggars, panhandlers, sellers and anyone whose movement canaffect your journey.

DO NOT...take photos or video clips of yourself whiledriving. How reckless and childish is that? What do you thinkwill happen when the flash from the cell phone momentarily blindsyou?

DO…pull over. If you have to take the call and you know it isgoing to be a lengthy one, simply find a safe spot on the side ofthe road, pull over and handle your business. That way you candevote all your attention to the matter at hand and not worryabout running a red light or into the back of another vehicle.

Remember you do not have the right to put other people’s livesin danger.

Unless it is an excursion that you willingly consentto, no one wants to be taken for a ride. Finding agood and reliable garage can seem like a ‘needle in

a haystack’ mission, but you can take the guesswork outof your search if you look for key elements that will eitherserve as a glaring red flag or assure you that you have madea good decision.

Almost daily, you hear someone complaining either aboutbeing dissatisfied with the service provided or about being‘ripped off’ by a garage that serviced their vehicle. Pollsdone over the last ten years found that:

● over a third of motorists are dissatisfied with theirgarage experience

● many are charged more than the initial estimation forwork

● 12% of motorists think they have been overchargedby a garage

● Most people don't know who to speak to if an issuearises with a garage

Do not become another statistic.

Check credentials/reputation with a governingbody. The Motor Repairers Association of Jamaica (MRAJ),a chapter of the wider Automobile Services Association,is the organization that tries to regulate and promote fairand ethical practices amongst automotive serviceprofessionals. They therefore would know all its membersand can inform you of those who adhere to the appropriateand acceptable standards of workmanship in the trade. They also encourage members to seek ongoing technicaland management education so that ever-changingtechnology is not lost on them.

Deal only with registered garages. While we don’thave Craigslist in Jamaica, we do have a very good directory

system. If the place you are heading is not listed and hasno road or street signs identifying its location, chances areit is not a registered company and is a man ‘doing a thing’.Don’t let him do it at your expense.

Ask to see proof of certification. In Jamaica we tendto think that if we ask people who claim to be professionalsto provide us with proof, we are offending them. In theUnited States and other countries, this is standard aspeople see no issue with asking someone to show themtheir paperwork before any transaction is done. We needto get in the habit of being sure that service providers arequalified.

Check to ensure adherence to industrywide bestpractices. The MRAJ, along with the NationalEnvironment and Planning Agency (NEPA), implementedan environmental code of practice to encourage itsmembers to abide by said code in their individualautomotive establishments to better demonstrateenvironmental stewardship while delivering quality servicesto customers.

Always get testimonials and references from familymembers, colleagues, friends and car clubs. Theeasiest way to separate the sheep from the wolves is toask questions of the people you know and whose opinionsyou can trust. Talk to other car owners to get an idea ofwhich garages offer consistent quality. It also does not hurtto speak to a representative of a car club as they too canshed light on the garages they associate with quality service.

Inspect their surroundings for cleanliness andorganization. Usually the very bad garages cannot hidethe fact that they do shoddy jobs, so if you pull in andeverything is chaotic and disorganised, don’t even bothergetting out of your vehicle.

What to Lookfor in a GoodGarage…

Be Creative

Carpooling. Now do not wrinkle your brow because you maynot have considered it. Think about it, if millionairefilmmaker Steven Spielberg could carpool when carrying his

kids to school, so can we with a little ingenuity and patience.

The average motor vehicle owner in Jamaica is said to be intrinsicallyselfish and a few have even quipped that since no one helped themto purchase their vehicles they are under no obligation to carryanyone in it. But is driving alone selfish or simple self preservation?

A few persons have shared stories about things going mysteriously‘missing’ after giving a ride or accommodating persons in theirvehicles. After searching high and low and even in the trunk andunder the hood of the car, their favourite CD, magazine, money orcosmetic bag just cannot be found and they are none too happy andvow to not be so benevolent in the future.

Having said that, there are many merits to practising this method oftransportation, and in the United States many have used it to theiradvantage to save on fuel and other expenses associated witheveryday use and maintenance of a car. So why not take a closerlook at it and then decide if in the future it is worthwhile for youand your family?

According to Wikipedia, carpooling (also known as car-sharing,ride-sharing, lift-sharing and covoiturage), is the sharing of carjourneys so that more than one person travels in a car. By doingthis, it reduces each person's travel costs such as fuel, oil and tollfees, as well as the stress of driving. Car sharing is also viewed asenvironmentally-friendly and a more sustainable way to travel asshared journeys reduces carbon emissions, traffic congestion andthe need for a lot of parking spaces.

Carpooling first became prominent in the United States as a rationingtactic during World War II. It returned in the mid-1970s due to the1973 oil crisis and the 1979 energy crisis. At that time, employeevanpools were organized at Chrysler and 3M.

In the United States in 2009, carpooling represented 43.5% of alltrips in that country, with the majority of carpool commutes (over60%) being "fam-pools", meaning travels done with family members. It is less likely among people who spend more time at work, olderworkers, and homeowners.

Now Jamaicans do not like to car pool for a variety of reasons, someof which were mentioned before, but that does not mean that it isnon-existent. Carpooling has worked to some extent in dormitorycommunities such as Portmore when a responsible parent or twowill take on the task of carrying a bunch of children who all attendtraditional high schools in Kingston. For instance, a parent whosechild attends St. Andrew High will also carry a child from Holy

Childhood, Merl Grove, Kingsway and surrounding areas to makethings a little easier. This has been going on for decades since the‘Sunshine City’ was first developed in the 1970s.

To a limited extent, carpooling works for persons living outside ofKingston and St. Andrew, so residents of Portmore, Spanish Town,Old Harbour, May Pen and Mandeville carpool to get into Kingstonas it saves time and effort and the drivers get a little ‘something’for gas and toll money.

Jumping in one big, comfy car for a shared journey does have somegreat perks such as saving on expenses like oil, gas etc., reducingyour stress level since you only have to drive in bumper-to-bumpertraffic one or two days per week instead of everyday, your bossknows you have to leave by ‘x’ time in order to get home safely,so he cannot ask you to work late and if you are a people personand do not like being alone, carpooling can be a fun way to relieveboredom and monotony.

On the flip side, it has several distinct disadvantages that also haveto be considered. Now, if there is an emergency and you did notdrive to work, you will have to beg a ride or fork out money fora taxi which you certainly didn’t budget for; you have to adjust toindividual personalities, idiosyncrasies and habits, like someonewho talks too much, gossips, chews gum loudly, plays music tooloudly, smokes and curses too often; you do not have the freedomto stop and run errands when you want to; you cannot just hopinto your car and go to lunch or to the pharmacy when it is notyour day to drive, so the little pleasures of being independent arelost and to top it all off, if someone in the carpool is sick withanything that is airborne like a cold, chances are, you’re gonnacatch it as well from being in such close proximity to them.

But the number one reason why it is not more successful in Jamaica, especially in the capital city where so many people are headed inthe same direction every morning at the same time, is one that weas a nation have always battled without winning: Tardiness. Yes,Jamaicans are notorious for being late and a carpool venture cannotwork if someone is perpetually late as they will make everyone inthe pool late, and being late for work too often is a big no-no. Onelate person can throw off everybody’s schedule and if it happensmore than once, then it becomes a problem.

As you can see, there are pros and cons to this initiative that manyhave been advocating for to ease up on the never-ending gridlockon our major thoroughfares every morning and evening. The keyto deciding if it will work for you is pretty simple. Can youvoluntarily share space with persons other than your familymembers on a daily basis? The answer to that question willdetermine just how many will be sitting in your car in the nearfuture.
