Family-friendly SUV is minivan alternativeStill considered by some to be
a crossover SUV that is a taller and heavier version of the Cam-ry, Toyota’s Highlander arrived in North America in 2001 as a five-seat ute and increased to seven seats in 2004. Marketed as an on-road comfort sports-utility ve-hicle with unit body construction and independent rear suspen-sion, Highlander is six years into its second generation, which also includes a hybrid version.
A cool, comfortable, family-oriented alternative to a minivan, Highlander is a seven-seater that handles more carlike than many mid-size sports-utes and pam-pers in Camry fashion. The pub-lic purchased more than 100,000 units last year and with sales up 15 percent so far this year, High-lander appeals to parents while getting a thumbs up from their kids. And for those who just want a classy, smooth-riding SUV with contemporary architecture and creature comforts, Highlander fills the bill.
Last year’s refreshed front fas-cia and headlights remain, as do chrome accent rocker panel, and signature front grille. The non-hybrid engines for 2012 continue with two choices, a 2.7-liter 4-cylinder engine and a 3.5-liter V-6, while standard interior features are abundant.
H ighlander is constructed with a reinforced unitized body and fits mid-size ute parameters at 188.4 inches long, 75.2 inches wide and 69.3 inches high with roof rails, on a 109.8-inch wheel-base. Weighing in at just over two tons -- 4045 lbs. – Highlander offers a tow capacity of 5000 lbs. and has a ground clearance of 8 inches.
Larger engine provides powerThe two engine choices begin
with its reliable and economic 4-cylinder 2.7-liter that provides 187 hp and 186 lbs-ft of torque and is good for 20mph city and 25 highway for a 2WD. That is also the engine utilized on its hy-brid model. My test Highlander was propelled by the alternative 3.5-liter V-6 engine that pro-moted 270 horses and 248 lbs-ft.
of torque. EPA rated at 18mpg in the city and 24 on the highway for 2WD and 17/city and 22/high-way for 4WD, my 4WD High-lander came in at 20.6mpg for a full week of mixed-use driving in which highway miles made up about two-thirds of the exami-nation.
The 3.5 responds well and moves the two-ton ute with aplomb. Accelerating as a car would, rather than many of its trucklike SUV peers, Highland-er passes aggressively, takes on hills with no hesitation and has enough low-end torque to sprint from zero to 60 mph in 7.6 sec-onds. My test ride also completed a quarter-mile jaunt in 15.8 sec-onds.
Carlike handlingOn the road, Highlander lives
up to its comfortable Camry-like billing. The full independent sus-pension -- full-time 4-wheel drive, 4-wheel independent MacPherson strut suspension with L-shaped lower arm and rear stabilizer bars – takes the ruts out of rough road surfaces, and the electronic power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering, power-as-sisted ventilated solid front and rear disc brakes with electron-ic brakeforce distribution and brake assist provide responsive handling, good maneuverability, easy parking, and light steering, which is good on the road, but a bit vague in quick hairpins.
Spacious cabinThe Highlander cabin is com-
fortable, user-friendly, spacious and filled with amenities. Instru-ments and gauges are easy to use and very visible. Speaking of vis-ibility, interior sightlines are good and obstructions are minimal.
While legroom is a bit sparse in row three, seats are homey and cargo space is excellent. The cozy cabin seats seven with headroom of 40.6 inches in row one 40.1 in row two and 36.3 inches in row three; leg room measures 43.2, 38.3 and 29.9, and shoulder room affords 59.7, 59.5 and 55.0 inches respectively. A moonroof takes about an inch of headroom from the front row. With the back two rows folded down, Highlander provides 95.4 cubic feet of space … plenty for camping gear, gro-ceries, hockey equipment or rec-reational or workloads.
Interior accouterments include backup camera with a 3.5-inch multi-information display; 10-way adjustable driver’s seat; tilt and telescopic steering wheel; cruise control; front and rear air conditioning; multi-function keyless entry system; UV-reduc-tion windshield and rear privacy
glass; digital clock; dual sun vi-sors with vanity mirrors and sliding extensions; conversation mirror; illuminated entry system; scheduled maintenance indicator light and full-size spare tire.
Top crash test scoresHighlander safety features in-
clude side-impact airbags for front seat passengers, full-length side curtain airbags, a driver-side knee airbag and active front head restraints.
Also included are antilock disc brakes, stability and traction control, hill-start assist and hill-descent control. In government crash tests, Highlander received a perfect score of 5 stars for side-impact protection and gained four stars for overall protection.
2 0 1 2 H i g h l a n d e rs b a s e a t $29,050 with a 2WD set up and a 6-speed automatic transmis-sion linked to a 2.7-liter 4-cylin-
der engine. My test Highlander in Limited trim with the 3.5-liter powerplant and 5-speed auto-matic based at $39,205 for 2WD. The 4x4 upgrade increased the base to $38,875; voice navigated touch screen DVD navigation and upgraded audio with Bluetooth capability added $2870; run-ning boards were $649; body side moldings were $199; mudguards added $99; all-weather floor mats added $245, remote engine starter was $529 and delivery and processing fees added $810 for a final sticker of $42,596.

Behind the Wheel
Fiat 500 Abarth: A different take on a familiar brandBy ANN M. JOBFor ThE ASSociATEd PrESS
Auto enthusiasts lusting for something new, exotic and fun to drive but relatively inexpensive have a new choice this year.
The four-seat, 2012 Fiat 500 Ab-arth hatchback arrived in the Unit-ed States with the legendary sport personality of its forebears — a small body with a distinctly Eu-ropean look, throaty performance sound and an impressive engine for such a lightweight car.
In this 2012 rendition, the 500 Abarth is powered by a 160-horse-power, turbo, four-cylinder pow-erplant that generates 59 more horses and 72 more foot-pounds of torque than the base Fiat 500 four cylinder.
The three-door Abarth also at-tracts attention when dressed in eye-catching Rosso Red or Nero Black paint with accent striping proclaiming “Abarth” on the sides and wearing mirror caps and sin-ister-looking Hyper Black 17-inch wheels.
It’s a small but wicked car that seems so different from milder Fiat 500s that one onlooker disputed that the Abarth test car was a Fiat at all.
There was a reason for her con-fusion. There wasn’t a 500 badge on the exterior of the car anywhere — only Abarth badges and Abarth wording on all four sides.
And truthfully, she wasn’t the target buyer. Fiat officials hope to lure more men to the 500 with the Abarth and its racing heritage.
In fact, every Abarth buyer gets one day of professional driver in-struction at a local racetrack to hone skills and learn the capabili-ties of the car.
All the style, fun and power of the 2012 500 Abarth comes at a start-ing retail price of $22,700. Note that only a five-speed manual transmis-sion is offered.
This starting Abarth price is $6,500 more than a base 2012 Fiat 500, which has a 101-horsepower four cylinder that’s naturally aspi-rated.
But the Abarth’s price is $2,750 less than the starting manufactur-er’s suggested retail price, includ-ing destination charge, of the 2012 Mini Cooper S that has 181-horse-power, turbocharged four-cylin-
der engine and six-speed manual transmission. Also competing in the sporty hatchback segment is the 2013 Volkswagen GTI, which starts at $24,790 for a three-door model and has a 200-horsepower, turbocharged four cylinder mated to a six-speed manual.
The Abarth beats the others in federal government fuel economy ratings. It is rated at 28 miles per gallon in city driving and 34 mpg on the highway for a combined rating of 31 mpg. In comparison, the Mini Cooper S is rated at a combined 30 mpg and the GTI is rated at just 25 mpg in combined city/highway travel.
Abarth, pronounced eh-BART in Europe, is named after European racing great Karl Abarth, who es-tablished a race car company with his astrological sign, Scorpio, in its logo.
Fiat bought the company, and to-day, a scorpion remains in the Ab-
arth badge that’s on the new 500 Abarth. “Small but wicked” has long described Abarth cars.
This is a decidedly small car — it’s a mere 12 feet long from bumper to bumper and weighs some 2,500 pounds, which is more than a base Fiat 500 but less than competi-tors. As an example, the three-door GTI weighs some 500-plus pounds more and is nearly 14 feet long.
But where lesser Fiat 500s look cute and Euro-fashionable, the Ab-arth, albeit with less than 32 inches of rear legroom, can look seriously sporty.
The Abarth sits 0.6 inch closer to the pavement than a regular 500, and the front fascia accommodates air intakes for the turbo’s intercool-ers. The rear spoiler, at the trailing edge of the roof, is bigger than in other 500s.
Inside, every Abarth comes with high-back, front bucket seats that immediately convey “sport”. Ped-als are covered by sporty aluminum plates. There’s a turbo boost gauge on the dashboard, and the steering wheel is sporty-small in diameter,
with a flat bottom and beefy spots for hands at the 10 o’clock and 3 o’clock positions.
The 1.4-liter, single overhead cam, MultiAir, turbocharged four cylin-der is the most powerful in any Fiat 500 in the States. Its deep-throat-ed sounds burst forth at startup and continue during acceleration. Torque peaks at a considerable 170 foot-pounds starting at a low 2,500 rpm and continuing to 4,000 rpm.
To get the maximum perfor-mance, a driver must push a “Sport” button on the dashboard each time the car is started. This causes an engine control unit to use different engine calibrations. It coaxes driv-ers, too, through a shift light that’s attentive to the redline.
Zero to 60 miles an hour has been clocked at less than 7 seconds. This is not rocket speed, but it felt plen-ty fast in the little tester, where the grippy Pirelli tires communicated a lot of road surface feel to passen-gers.
The Abarth comes standard with a Torque Transfer Control system that all but eliminates torque steer
in this front-wheel drive car.The five-speed manual in the test
car moved through the gears com-petently, and steering was precise and quick.
The Abarth features beefed-up brakes, and shock and other sus-pension tuning keeps the car in a tight rein.
Much safety equipment comes standard on the Abarth, includ-ing antilock brakes, hill start as-sist, electronic stability control, brake assist and seven air bags, one of which is for the driver’s knee to keep the driver positioned behind the steering wheel during a frontal crash.
Still, the Abarth earned only three out of five stars in federal govern-ment side crash testing and four out of five stars in frontal crash testing.
The 2012 Fiat 500 has been the subject of one safety recall. The Na-tional Highway Traffic Safety Ad-ministration reported some mod-els came off the assembly line with contaminated brake fluid, which could degrade seals and result in reduced braking power.

Sporty Chevy Sonic to sell for just under $21,000
DETROIT — General Motors is about to make a sporty version of its Chevrolet Sonic subcompact car.
The Sonic RS will start at just under $21,000. It has the same engine as the regular Sonic — a turbocharged 1.4-li-ter, 138 horsepower four-cylinder. But it gets different gearing for its six-speed manual and automatic transmissions so it has a sportier feel.
The RS also comes with four-wheel disc brakes for faster stopping. And its suspension is tuned so it sits lower to the ground and is more stable.
GM also is giving the RS a new front grille and fascia, and a rear spoiler.
The Sonic is the top-selling subcom-pact in the U.S. so far this year. Produc-tion of the RS starts in October at a fac-tory in Orion Township, Michigan.
Nissan recalling Infiniti SUVs to fix gas gauges
DETROIT — Nissan is recalling about 7,800 Infiniti SUVs because the fuel gauges can show gas in the tank when there isn’t any.
The recall affects the JX35 from the 2013 model year.
A tube inside the gas tank could be in the wrong place. That could prevent a float from dropping as fuel is used, caus-ing an inaccurate reading on the dash-board fuel gauge.
The SUVs could run out of gas unex-pectedly, increasing the risk of a crash, says the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Nissan will fix the problem for free. Owners will be notified by mail, and re-pairs are expected to start Sept. 4.
The SUVs were built from Feb. 15, 2012 through June 22.
Oil prices rise on expectations for
economic aidIt was the message the oil market has
been hoping to hear.Minutes from a July 31-Aug. 1 policy
meeting suggest the Federal Reserve is prepared to take new steps to boost the U.S. economy. Oil rose after the re-lease of the minutes on Wednesday, al-though the gain was tempered by con-cerns about Europe’s fragile economy and slower global growth.
Benchmark oil rose 42 cents to finish
Wednesday at $97.26 per barrel.Oil prices have risen about $8 per bar-
rel since Aug. 1, partly on hopes that the U.S., Europe and China would do more to increase growth in their respective economies. Slower growth cuts into the demand for oil and other energy prod-ucts.
The minutes show that Fed officials spoke with increased urgency about the need to provide more help to the econo-my unless it improved significantly. But there were no specific details about what steps might be taken or a timeframe for any action.
Earlier, a government report showed U.S. crude inventories shrank for a fourth consecutive week. Crude sup-plies fell by 5.4 million barrels, more than twice the 2 million barrel decline predicted by analysts. Crude inventories totaled 360.7 million barrels as of last week.
At the pump, the national average for gasoline fell less than a penny overnight to $3.716 per gallon, according to AAA, Wright Express and the Oil Price Infor-mation Service. That’s about a quar-ter more than a month ago and about 15 cents higher than a year ago.
In other trading, Brent crude, which is used to price international varieties of oil, rose 27 cents to end at $114.91 per barrel in London.
Donors pledge $15M to help Detroit rec centers
DETROIT — Detroit Mayor Dave Bing says the financially struggling city has secured $15 million from outside donors to keep 17 recreation centers open.
Bing announced his recreation plan Wednesday with a goal to raise $24 mil-lion to pay for three years of program-ming. One donor is Detroit automotive supplier Lear Corp., which has pledged $5 million during a 10-year period.
The Detroit Free Press reports the money pledged to the trust can be used only for programming and won’t be part of the general fund. The Detroit News says the city pays about $20 million to operate the centers and aims to cut that to $10 million.
Detroit has signed a financial stabil-ity agreement with the state as it tries to deal with a budget deficit topping $200 million.
Oshkosh Defense to make prototype combat vehicle
OSHKOSH, Wis. — Oshkosh Defense is one of three companies selected to make
a prototype combat vehicle for the U.S. Department of Defense, with hopes of ultimately winning the final contract.
Oshkosh Defense will initially get $56 million to build 22 “joint light tactical vehicles” and deliver them within one year. The government will test versions of the vehicle over the next 15 months and decide which company will get the contract.
The Wisconsin State Journal reports that if Oshkosh Defense is chosen, it could mean roughly $13.75 billion in De-fense Department contracts.
The new vehicles are expected to re-place Humvees for U.S. ground forces. The prototypes are lighter and have im-proved technology and protective gear.
The contract will not result in new jobs at this time.
GM investing $220M in two plants to build new Cruze
DETROIT — General Motors says it will invest $220 million at two Ohio factories to build the next generation Chevrolet Cruze compact car.
The company says the investment in new equipment will preserve more than 5,000 jobs at factories in Lordstown, Ohio, near Youngstown, and Parma near Cleveland.
GM says the new Cruze will get fresh styling, a nicer interior and better gas mileage than the version on sale now. The Cruze now gets 35 to 42 miles per gallon on the highway depending on en-gine and transmission.
GM wouldn’t say when production of the new Cruze will start. The compact is GM’s second-best selling car with nearly 129,000 sold so far this year.
The Lordstown factory complex has built 500,000 Cruzes since production began in September of 2010.
Long-running central N.Y. auto parts plant shut downDEWITT, N.Y. — A Syracuse-area
manufacturing company that has been in business for nearly 125 years has shut down production.
WSYR-TV in Syracuse reports that the last auto parts assembly lines at New Process Gear in suburban DeWitt shut down Thursday. The plant will be com-pletely closed by the end of the year.
New Process employed about 4,000 workers at its peak making parts for cars and trucks. But the plant has been los-ing money for years. Its Canadian owner, Magna International, decided in 2009 to close the factory after unionized workers
rejected contract concessions. The company produced hardened raw-
hide for use as gears when it was founded in 1888. In 1913, the name was changed to New Process Gear as it switched to making metal automotive gears.
Bill limits ‘buy here, pay here’ vehicle sales
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — California would restrict the operations of “buy here, pay here” auto dealers under a bill approved by the state Senate.
AB1447 would prohibit dealers from forcing buyers to pay installments in person and require them to provide buy-ers with warranties covering the vehicle for at least 30 days or 1,000 miles.
The bill also would prohibit dealers from installing tracking devices without the buyer’s consent.
Those targeted by the legislation deal primarily in used vehicles and offer their own financing. Sen. Ted Lieu says they charge high interest rates and churn ve-hicles by constantly repossessing and reselling them.
Democratic Sen. Rod Wright says deal-ers take the precautions because their buyers have a history of defaulting.
The Senate passed the bill Thursday 22-14, returning it to the Assembly for final action.
Gold hits 4-month high on hopes for economic help
The price of gold is at a four-month high as lackluster manufacturing in Chi-na raises expectations that government leaders will take more action to help the world’s second-largest economy.
G o l d fo r De ce m b e r d e l ive ry rose $32.30, or 2 percent, Thursday to end at $1,672.80 per ounce. That’s the highest level since April.
A survey shows China’s manufactur-ing production fell to a nine-month low in August. The report follows signs that the Federal Reserve may consider more help for the U.S. economy.
Investors are buying gold as a hedge against inflation because of expecta-tions that China, the U.S. and Europe will work to invigorate growth.
In other trading, prices are higher for copper, platinum, palladium and gaso-line. Oil, wheat, corn and soybeans are lower.
