NOTEWORTHY STATS & FIGURES From Autonomy & Connectivity to Electrification & the Sharing Economy

‣ In a record year of 72 debut vehicles, 73% of debuts were classified as either Global or North American (Page 8).

‣ AutoMobility LA continued to be a global stage for more than 30 automotive-technology experts — including c-level executives from Canoo, Faraday Future, and Porsche Cars North America — to share industry insights (Page 18).

The 2019 AutoMobility LA Hackathon, presented by Amazon Web Services and HERE Technologies and co-sponsored by SiriusXM Connected Vehicle Services, continued its reign as the only hack hosted by an auto show. Over the course of two days, a talented collection of 140 developers were tasked to develop the enabling software and architectures to support a charging infrastructure for electric vehicles and long-haul, electric trucks as they travel along the 1,300 miles of Interstate 5 from Mexico to Canada.

GridSmartr secured the $10,000 grand prize for its innovative solution to two critical EV adoption factors — infrastructure stability and consumer adoption incentives. The tool works by finding optimal times to charge electric vehicles while providing a point incentive system to encourage consumers to draw less energy while the grid is overloaded.

Team ReRoute placed second and received $5,000 for their product aimed at reducing air pollution while encouraging the use of electric vehicles through an eco-friendly routing framework. Category winners include Team Wheels (Impact), Team King of the Road (Innovation), and Team Atom (Technical Execution).

EVs IN THE SPOTLIGHT An Educational Initiative Promoting the Future of Electric Vehicles

Designed to demystify fears and strengthen consumer resolve behind the gradual transition from internal combustion engines (ICE) to alt-fuel vehicles, Los Angeles Auto Show’s inaugural “EV|LA” program had plenty for attendees to experience. Presented by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, the program was co-sponsored by Electrify America with support from the Clean Vehicle Rebate Project (CVRP), Electric for All (Veloz), Institute of Transportation Studies at UC Davis, and Plug-In America.

Key pillars included information on EV rebates, resources, and ownership, onsite research studies, and guided tours. Led by Robb Report’s Manuel Carrillo III, EV tours received over 500 reservations.

“Electric cars are not just the future. They are here today,” said Veloz Executive Director Josh Boone. “The LA Auto Show is the premier event in California where consumers can see, touch, and ask questions about the full range of electric cars on the market. Our Electric For All campaign aims to make it easy for consumers to learn more about electric cars and their benefits, so we’re delighted to support EV|LA and the showcase tours.”
