Automobile Engineering

Defination : An Automobile defined as a wheeled vehicle having its own automotive power unit, making the vehicle to move.

History: 1st official 3 wheel automobile was build in 1885 with an otto cycle engine, later by year 1888 modified to have accelerator, radiator, spark plug, clutch and gear shaft. The first 4 wheeled vehicle was made in 1893 with a 4 stroked engine.

COMPONENTS OF THE AUTOMOBILE Consist of five basic components :

• (a) The Engine or Power Plant : It is source of power. • (b) The Frame and Chasis : It supports the engine, wheels,

body, braking system, steering, etc. • (c) The transmission which transmits power from the engine

to the car wheels. It consists of clutch, transmission, shaft, axles and differential.

• (d) The body. • (e) Accessories including light, air conditioner/hearer, stereo,

wiper, etc.
