Chair’s Introducon

Every organisaon, both private and public sector, needs to control its costs to maintain a healthy balance sheet. Energy costs come straight off the boom line and having the right data and analysis tools is the basis for understanding every part of your energy consumpon.

Although simple and easily understood, this wide-ranging statement hides behind it the complexity involved in designing, implemenng, maintaining and managing a fit-for-purpose aM&T strategy.

The following pages aim to set out and explain some of the basics and a few advanced techniques that make up this subject, before highlighng the ESTA members who have experse to deliver a strategy for you.

ESTA’s automac Monitoring & Targeng group, supports an effecve, transparent and professional approach to supplying products or services but also aims to deliver useful informaon, best pracce and advice to industry stakeholders.

I encourage you to read through some of the guidance and thoughts herein and to task us to provide the rights services and technology for your needs.

1. Metering (the case for sub-metering)

The case for sub-metering.

With sub-metering you can:

If you don’t have sub-metering all you really know about your ulity or energy consumpon is - how much? And perhaps when (maybe).

You may know that monthly or you may have more granular data if you have Half-Hourly metering (and your meter operator has a web portal that you have access to), but this is defined by the fiscal meters that you have installed. You may be able to idenfy wastage from a baseline, but have no idea where or what that waste is aributed to.

As soon as you install sub-metering, you add a where and a definite when to your informaon sources and that is a very different thing knowing how much, when it took place and where it took place.

With the installaon of sub-metering you are in far stronger posion in terms of the granularity of data you hold and what you can do with it.

Reduce waste down at the point where it is • taking place

Evaluate plant and equipment (and then • opmise it)

Ensure plant performs to expectaon (including • new equipment)

Raise awareness and encourage/enforce best • pracce (combined with the right soware front-end)

Taking the last point, a sub-metering soluon combined with the right soware can help to raise awareness with everyone within your organisaon via a web-based front end, parcularly if it has dashboards and a plaorm area for the invited audience.

Highlighng via the granular data you now have, the area relevant for them, to show data for example on their area (kitchen/canteen for example) to capture their interest and support your connual reducon strategy

The Right Technology

The right technology has to give you:

Some of the technical terms for data acquision that are out there:

Modbus | M-Bus | profibus | UHF | sms | LoRa | GPRS | ZigBee | 3G | WiFi | hps | sp

Everything is out there in terms of data acquision. How do you pick your way through all of that?

You will probably engage a contractor to help you, but there are a few things that you need to be aware of, because not all providers have the same approach.

Generally speaking you match the system that gets delivered to what the client, the site and what the user expectaons actually are; rather than to try and make a parcular technology fit the site.

Data portability (ie, take data from that locaon • to where it’s needed, cloud, locally etc)

Future Proofing (not just tech, but in how the • installed system is understood by you)

Hardware Interfaces (keen on using as much • exisng hardware and infrastructure as possible)

In parcular around future-proofing, consideraon around internal staff movement for example. If a system has been installed by a predecessor who then leaves, someone else comes in and isn’t able to get what is needed from the system and then makes changes to suit a different way of working.

A lot of this goes on and it’s fairly easy to make sure that it doesn’t. What you want to do is put a system in that once you’ve long gone on aer being promoted is sll working, even if put in a decade ago. Sll fit-for-purpose and sll does the job!

This should all be aligned with the site consideraons and performance expectaons as alluded to earlier.

The site topology the kind of site that it is will have an impact on the type of technology that you employ to make the system work and what are you expecng the system to do in terms of the need for a simple or complex design.

2. Data Acquision

Key design principles

How to implement metering and associated systems.

Data collecon technologies

Implementaon Consideraons

Use ‘standard’ equipment where possible• Use/adapt exisng hardware where possible• Know the Users’ expectaons.• Maximise reliability, resilience and simplicity•

Try and standardise equipment, try and avoid proprietary soluons, avoid locking yourself in, so that you have opons for the future.

It simply doesn’t make sense to rip kit out that is serviceable, so make sure enough work has been done in trying to use exisng kit before making any changes.

It’s in no-one’s interest to fit equipment for the sake of fing equipment. In this regard, track record and experience are essenal to designing the best soluon.

Devices (Meters | Loggers | Modems | • Gateways)Device Protocols (Modbus | M-bus | Pulses* | • Proprietary*)Device Connecvity (Wired | Wireless (ZigBee, • radio 153Mhz, 868Mhz)Back Haul Connecvity (IP | GSM | future LoRa, • SigFox)

*try and minimise, avoid where possible

Once the data journey has moved from the devices, via the protocols and down the wire or over the air the data comes out to your soware either in the cloud or locally. There area lot of technology and steps to employ on s data journey which can be confusing. There is however a soluon for every scenario, the skill is in using the right soluon in the right scenario in order to implement the key design principles.

Quite oen the site topography is a main driver of system cost.

Site topography is crical for the design of • device connecvity and backhaulSite health and safety working restricons• Connecons tariff meters (data feeds, cerfied • connecons)Client expectaons•

From an implementaon point of view

Office Block

Campus Style site – University as an example.

Factories – Split sites

Construcon sites / Quarries

Meters

A meter should only be deemed commissioned when the correct data is seen in the visualisaon soware. Nothing has been achieved unl the customer can see the right informaon.

Generally within an office block you will have riser cupboards allowing you to work vercally up and down the building. Landlord supplies, tenant supplies, a lot of meters but quite an easy installaon ulising hard wiring, low cost.

It has a dispersed estate over a large area with a combinaon of high and low-rise buildings. In this situaon you need a whole variety of technologies – wired, radio, IP, perhaps making this style of site the most complex to design and implement.

Harsh environments, noise, switchgear, machinery, This increases the number of health and safety issues to be aware of. Understanding what’s happening in that site may determine the technology employed.

Simple from a metering point of view, but from a data connecvity perspecve to get to back haul can be quite complex and challenging.

Lots of different types, colours and sizes, including gas, oil and electricity. It is useful to get a handle on the parameters of what is being measured and the communicaon standards being used such as ModBus etc. This will help int he aim to standardise across sites as described earlier.

Figure 1.

Maximising Return on Investment (ROI)

A University for example will have a Local Area Network (LAN) running around the campus. An important consideraon is that when the site already has a high capacity dedicated network, it’s a clever idea to use it if you can.

The amount of traffic that a metering system will add is negligible, although it’s not always that simple. Resistance from the IT staff who look aer the network may be reluctant to allow data which they do not control to pass over it. Where it is available, do use it or at least pursue the conversaon as it will deliver a very reliable, high quality, data acquision system for not a lot of money. It certainly helps in this instance to consider the standards being employed to make the case for access.

Reliable but for how long? who maintains them? What is the mechanism for tracking that?

It is important that it has local memory and that it can communicate. Generally data loggers are where you come across proprietary protocols and if you take a view of the whole system, that area is where you may need to replace part of the system. As long as you have data loggers that have local memory and can push the data to where you need it then you have made a good decision.

Typically if you can use LAN or access the customers network, you can send data much faster as it is always on, especially as we begin to look at demand response and other newer technologies and you start to get closer to real-me (or near-me) data. GSM / SMS - Very common to isolate data from the network, but consider the costs, configuraon and management.

Site topography in the main will determine the type of technology used to overcome each challenge. All of the design, choice of technologies, installaon has just one purpose.

Measure major loads• Undetected loss – not just significant loads• Tenant recharge or cost allocaon• Ensure metering aligns with producon & • normalising requirementsProving savings (Measurement & Verificaon) • and verifying connual adherence to savings.

Operang a Sub Metering System

3. aM&T (automac Monitoring & Targeng)

Key Drivers

Don’t forget the unmetered set of loads or undetected losses, they may be small loads but if they are on constantly consider those for metering, and if for example you want to have a predicted kWh per producon unit, make sure that your metering matches your producon line, this may determine where you place your metering.

Get to know your site to help specify the right soluon.

No system runs itself for ever – so don’t expect • perfect data and perfect communicaons without maintenance.Focus on data completeness (i.e. X data points • vs. Null data)Have processes to idenfy the issues and a • contractor capable of recfying them.

Consider data quality alarms. Ensure the acons meframe matches the system resilience or data cricality (i.e. 20 days memory needs fixing in 20 days). If crical this should have a process in case of failure. Without alarms or processes in place, an irretrievable gap in the data could occur.

Addional aspects linclude whether this should be set at a meter, building or process level? Data quality alarms are an essenal part of a metering soluon. This should be balanced against the service agreement required.

Remember – all systems need to be managed.

Cost Reducon• Carbon Reporng• Mandatory Reporng• Understanding and building the case for new • technologies.

If considering demand side response, baeries or other forms of new technology, if you don’t have the informaon on a reasonably granular level about consumpon then it is much more difficult to make decisions in an accurate way.

Basic aM&T Load profiles• Basic tables and comparisons•

The kind of implementaon that is based around half hour bar charts.

Don’t overlook the basics, consider the need when looking into the higher echelons of energy management and cusum and regression, sliding baselines etc. Lots of good work gets done with fairly simple informaon.

A standard daily profile shown in fig.2 above. Where, in terms of reducon concentrang geng the baseline down as low as possible, concentrang on sharpening up the start and finish mes and depressing the peak as well. Commonly referred to as the ‘Top Hat’.

There is nothing wrong with simple tools for profiling and analysis!

‘There is a hell of a lot of energy that can be saved with a half hour bar chart, a mark one eyeball and a few brain cells’ – Bill Gysin, Elcomponent

page - 11

Advanced aM&T More advanced energy management techniques• Normalisaon and Benchmarking• Tracking of Actual vs. Expected• Measurement and Verificaon (M&V)•

The basic concept of normalisaon, i.e. by dividing our energy consumpon with a driver whether producon or degree days is fundamentally not that great, because if you have a bad day on producon then the normalised value is going to go up, the number of kWh per producon unit will go up.

That doesn’t mean that anybody dropped the ball in terms of energy efficiency, it just means that producon was down that day and that has nothing to do with the efficient use of energy.

Moving on to the tracking of your actual vs. your expected consumpon that deals with the above issue quite nicely, because that will tell you that your producon is low and so you will expect to be lower but not as low as it could have been as your normalisaon value has gone up.

This kind of thing is where you need to be looking in your soware and make sure that these techniques can be applied either from installaon or later on when you are ready to move into more sophiscated stascal techniques.

Measurement & Verificaon. Lots of money is being spent on new plant or equipment projects such as lighng, CHP etc. Every project should be idenfied and understood in terms of exactly how its going to perform, it is then monitored in a repeatable way as part of an M&V package to make sure that it actually does.

www.estaenergy.org.uk

fig.3a above is an example of a regression analysis in a factory that either has a high unit producon or very lile producon, Y-axis showing weekend output, the points showing usual weekend producon. This can be turned into a cusum analysis shown in fig.3b which can then create the following chart fig.4 which is against expected.

It shows the weekends where there is zero producon, with the expected and actual matching very well. This will also work on a day where the producon is lower or higher. If it doesn’t work all that is happening is that it is shows normalising. Once expected vs. actual is in place alarm lines can be added if expected vs. actual move too far apart.
