Operation Please take a moment to familiarise yourself with the locations and names of the key features of the machine as detailed on the previous page. These features will be referred to by name throughout this manual.

Starting the machine for the first time: Your Turf Trooper has been thoroughly inspected and run up before dispatch from the factory to ensure the correct operation of all controls and features. As a result, a small amount of petrol may remain in the fuel tank. However it is essential to fill the tank with clean, fresh unleaded petrol before use, as stale or contaminated fuel may cause unsatisfactory operation or engine damage. Always check the oil level in accordance with the engine manual supplied before attempting to start the machine. Ensure the area around the oil and fuel fillers is clean and free from any water or other debris before opening the fillers or adding fuel / oil. After unpacking the machine and checking the oil and fuel levels, lift the seat by tipping it forwards and turn the battery isolator to the ON position. Return the seat to the lowered position before attempting to start the machine.

The seating position can be altered by pushing the adjuster lever located under the front of the seat to the left and then sliding the seat forwards or backwards as desired. Once a comfortable position has been found, release the lever and ensure that the seat is locked in position by gently trying to slide it backwards and forwards.

Daily checks: The following checks should be made each day before the start of work. 1) Engine oil and fuel levels 2) Tyre condition and pressure (correct pressures 10 psi front, 26 psi rear) 3) Cutting reel belt tension (x 3) 4) Visually inspect for damage, paying particular attention to the cutting reels 5) Clear away any debris and cut grass from the machine. Starting procedure: Never attempt to start the engine if petrol is spilled or can be smelled. Move the machine to

a clean area or allow time for vapours to dissipate before starting. Ensure that the fuel and oil fillers are securely closed and the engine cowl lowered before

attempting to start the machine. Always start and stop the machine on level ground with the parking brake applied and the freewheel lever is in the drive position.

Page 10: Autoguide Turf Trooper...Autoguide Turf Trooper Part No 34779 Operating Instructions and Parts Manual autoguide equipment Heddington, Nr Calne, Wiltshire. SN11 0PS Telephone: +44 (0)

10

The following is the correct starting procedure for your Turf Trooper: 1) Sit on the seat 2) Ensure the parking brake is ON 3) Ensure the cutter switch is in the OFF position (Pushed in) 4) Ensure the speed control pedal is centralised (Neutral). 5a) For cold-starting, move the throttle lever to the CHOKE position. b) For warm-starting, move the throttle lever to the FAST position. 6) Turn the ignition key all the way to the left to crank the engine. 7) As soon as the engine starts, release the ignition key and move the throttle lever to the

FAST position. The engine will not crank if the cutter switch is in the ON position (pulled out) or if the speed

control pedal is not centralised. The operator must remain on the seat at all times or the engine will stop (note – the engine will crank if the operator is not on the seat, but will not run).

If the engine fails to start, do not crank it for more than a few seconds at a time to prevent

damage to the starter motor and battery. If you are experiencing trouble starting the machine, please refer to the troubleshooting guide at the end of this manual.

To stop the engine, turn the ignition key all the way to the right. If the engine has been

stopped by the operator leaving the seat or by any other event, ensure that the ignition key is returned to the OFF position immediately to prevent battery drain.

The throttle should be set to FAST for normal use. Never run the machine for prolonged periods with the throttle lever in the CHOKE position as engine damage will result. If the machine is to be left at rest with the engine running, the throttle should be set to the SLOW position.

The machine can be moved without starting the engine by placing the

transmission into the ‘freewheel’ position. To do this, ensure that the parking brake is on, then push the freewheel lever, located behind the RH wheel, rearwards and latch it onto the transaxle bracket. (Take care when the transmission is in the freewheel position, as once the parking brake is released the machine will roll freely.) To put the transmission back into the ‘drive’ position, push the lever back to its original central position. Always return the transmission to the drive position before starting or storing the machine.

To release the parking brake, push the pedal down and slightly to the left. To apply the

parking brake, push the lever down below the latch pin and push slightly to the right. Note – do not attempt to move off under power with the parking brake applied as this will stop the engine.

11

Travelling: Ensure that all three reels are raised in the transport position and ensure the throttle is set to FAST. To move off, release the parking brake and apply gradual pressure to the speed control pedal in the direction you wish to move. The speed control pedal does not affect the engine revs, but simply engages the transmission - the further the pedal is depressed the faster the machine will travel. To stop, release the pressure on the pedal – the hydrostatic transmission provides both drive and braking, so there should be no need to use the parking brake during normal use. If the braking effort is not sufficient (occasionally on a downhill gradient), then apply slight pressure to the speed control pedal opposite to the direction of travel. Take care when stopping from speed as the braking effort of the transmission can be sufficient to tip the machine forwards slightly. Due to the rear wheel steering, the machine can feel a little odd to begin with. Please take some time to familiarise yourself with the behaviour of your machine on flat level ground in a safe area before commencing work. Reel transport position: To avoid damage to the reels when travelling to and from the work area, the reels should be raised into the transport position. The reels should only be lowered into the working position when the machine is in the working area and mowing is about to commence. The reels are fitted with safety switches so that the cutter drive is shut off when any one of them is raised into the transport position. This safety feature should not be used as an alternative to stopping the reels with the cutter switch.

NEVER allow a third party to raise or lower the front reels whilst the engine is running.

NEVER leave the cutter switch engaged whilst the reels are in the transport position and the engine is running.

Page 12: Autoguide Turf Trooper...Autoguide Turf Trooper Part No 34779 Operating Instructions and Parts Manual autoguide equipment Heddington, Nr Calne, Wiltshire. SN11 0PS Telephone: +44 (0)

12

To raise the rear reel simply lift the lever to the upright position. To lower it again, carefully push the lever forwards and down, again taking care not to drop the reel. If the rear reel is to be left in the raised position for any length of time, or during transportation of the machine, ensure that the R-clip is securely located in the hole towards the front of the lever body. This prevents inadvertent lowering of the reel. To raise the front reels, ensure that the cutter switch is in the OFF position (pushed in). Stand in front of the machine and firmly grasp the outermost handle on the cutter you wish to raise and lift. The cutter will swing up and inwards and should also be pulled backwards towards the machine. The reel catcher plate should automatically engage, however if it does not, it can be moved into the correct position by hand. To lower the front reels, firmly grasp the outermost handle and lift slightly to release the latch, moving the latch plate by hand as required. Then carefully lower the cutter taking care not to drop it. It is easier to control the descent of the cutting reel by grasping the innermost handle as well. Transportation: For transportation purposes the machine has been designed with ‘tie down’ points (holes) at the front end and rear end of the chassis, under the engine cover. The machine must be securely fastened down using these ‘tie down’ points and the engine cover secured shut before transportation. Before loading ensure that all three reels are raised into the transport position. Insert the locking clip into the rear reel lift lever and put a strap or rope through the outer handles of the front reels to take the load off the latches for longer journeys. Mowing: As with any grass cutting equipment, before beginning work ensure that the area to be mown is free from any foreign objects or other obstructions and that bystanders and animals are kept clear. Any foreign bodies such as bricks or stones will cause damage to the cutter heads and may cause injury if ejected from the machine. Any obstructions that cannot be removed should be negotiated with care. Set all three reels to the working position and the throttle lever to approximately half and pull the cutter switch out to the ON position. All three reels should begin to rotate (note – the cutters will not rotate if any of them is raised into the transport position, there is no method of disconnecting one or more of the cutting reels and leaving the other(s) functional). If there are any unusual noises, excessive vibration or other problems then stop the machine immediately and refer to the troubleshooting guidelines at the end of this manual. Once the reels are rotating, set the throttle to FAST and move off slowly. Do not mow in reverse.

Depending upon the conditions, mowing speeds should vary between approximately 2km/h and 4km/h (brisk walking pace). In short, dry grass it will be possible to achieve a faster cutting speed, whereas longer wet grass will require a slower speed.

13

See section on mowing techniques for advice on achieving the best results from your machine.

From new, the cutting height is set to approximately 25mm (1”). This can be adjusted up or

down in 3mm increments as detailed below. The standard bottom blade offers a minimum cut height of 16mm (5/8”). If the cut height is set to below 16mm then the reel will run on the bottom blade rather than the rear roller which will put increased load on the transmission. If a very close cut is required then a special low cut bottom blade can be supplied reducing the minimum cut height to 12mm.

Cutting height adjustment Using the supplied 17mm spanner, slacken the locking nuts on the adjuster wheels at the

back of the reels (two per reel). Turn the adjuster wheel anticlockwise to free off the roller support plates and then slide the rear roller up or down to the desired position, ensuring that both ends are set to the same height. Once you are satisfied with the cutting height, tighten the adjuster wheels back up and then tighten the locking nuts securely.

Mowing techniques and troubleshooting: Cut grass should be ejected from the rear of the reels in a constant, smooth stream. The following is a guide to achieving the best results from your Turf Trooper. If after following this advice you cannot achieve the results you desire then please do not hesitate to contact your dealer for further assistance.

The cutting cylinders are adjusted and back lapped at the factory before dispatch to ensure

that they are perfectly on cut. Always ensure the blades are kept sharp and properly adjusted (note, this is NOT the same as adjusting the cutting height). The symptoms of blunt or badly adjusted blades are an increase in noise, increased power consumption (engine labouring) and poor cutting performance.

For information on adjustment and sharpening of the cutting cylinders, refer to the

maintenance section. If the ground is particularly wet or soft, or if the machine loses traction then tyre pressures

should be reduced slightly. Cut height and travelling speed As previously noted, the machine is supplied with the cutting height set to approximately

25mm, which should cope with most grass conditions. Early on in the year the grass is lush and dense and so a greater cut height may be necessary, and towards the end of the year a closer cut may be achieved.

If you require a particularly close cut in longer or heavy grass, do not attempt to achieve this

in a single pass. Make the first pass with the cutting height set fairly long and then go back over the area again at a lower cut height. Do not make multiple passes in the same direction of travel.

For the best results and to achieve the perfect finish to your lawn, mow frequently during

the growing season.

Page 14: Autoguide Turf Trooper...Autoguide Turf Trooper Part No 34779 Operating Instructions and Parts Manual autoguide equipment Heddington, Nr Calne, Wiltshire. SN11 0PS Telephone: +44 (0)

14

Travelling speed should be adjusted to compliment the cutting height and grass condition.

In long or heavy grass, or if taking a large cut, reduce the travelling speed. Once you get a feel for the machine, setting the cutting height and selecting an appropriate

travelling speed should become easier. If the engine labours excessively or the reels repeatedly clog then the cutting height is set

too low or the travelling speed too high. Never allow the engine to labour for prolonged periods as damage will result.

NEVER attempt to unblock cutting reels with the engine running as

severe injury could occur.

To unblock the reels, disengage the cutter drive, stop the engine and remove the ignition key. Then carefully remove excess cut material from inside the cutter head using a tool such as a wooden stick. Even with the engine stopped extreme care must still be taken when inserting hands into the cutting heads. If the reels continue to clog regardless of cutting height or speed it may be that the rear deflector has become deformed. Carefully bend the deflector upwards to increase the discharge aperture of the reel and allow better flow of cut material. Traversing the working area:

In strips: Begin by cutting a strip one machine width around the perimeter of the area. Increase this to two machine widths for larger areas. Then cut the centre using the pre-cut strip for turning. Round and round: First cut the diagonals to allow an area for turning, then cut in either concentric circles or a spiral. Try to cut in straight lines or the largest radius arc possible. Unlike rotary mowers, cylinder mowers only work well when the blade is at right angles to the direction of travel. The machine will not cut effectively if the cylinders are moving sideways or backwards. It is important not to drive over grass before you try and cut it as it will become flattened thus preventing an even cut. Sharp Turns: To ensure optimum manoeuvrability the Turf Trooper has a very tight turning circle. When making very tight turns particularly in wet conditions the inside wheel will damage the grass. Thus try not to use full lock to ensure the best finish. Slopes: Whilst the machine is naturally very stable, the uphill wheel will loose traction when traversing very steep slopes. Apply the differential lock momentarily to limit wheel spin. Do not exceed the slope angles listed in the safety section of this manual. In wet or soft conditions, reduce the tyre pressures slightly to increase grip. Maintenance: Before performing any maintenance or adjustment ensure that the engine is stopped and ignition key removed. When performing anything other than routine adjustment or maintenance the battery isolator switch must also be turned off and the key removed.

Page 15: Autoguide Turf Trooper...Autoguide Turf Trooper Part No 34779 Operating Instructions and Parts Manual autoguide equipment Heddington, Nr Calne, Wiltshire. SN11 0PS Telephone: +44 (0)

15

All engine maintenance including oil, filter and spark plug replacement must be carried out in accordance with the enclosed engine manual. Note – if the machine is to be left standing for a period in excess of 1 month it is recommended that the petrol tank be drained or stabiliser added to prevent deterioration of fuel. Running the engine on stale fuel will produce unsatisfactory operation and may prevent the engine from running all together. If the fuel in the tank becomes contaminated in any way, the fuel must be drained and discarded in an appropriate manner. To drain the fuel tank, working in a well ventilated area away from sources of ignition, carefully separate the fuel line at the white plastic connector over a suitable container. Once the fuel line is separated and located in the container remove the fuel filler cap to allow the fuel to drain, taking extreme care to avoid spillages or contact with the skin or eyes. If the machine is to be left for a prolonged period, it is recommended to turn the battery isolator to the OFF position. For added security, the isolator key may be removed along with the ignition key. Belt Tension: It is essential to check all belt tensions after the first 5

hours of operation. Before inspecting and tensioning any of the belts (except the cutting reel belts) it is beneficial to remove the steering column and the front nose guards, however this is not absolutely essential. Ensure that the engine is stopped and the ignition key removed before proceeding. Begin by removing the outer steering cowl from the front of the machine. Carefully remove 11 M8 bolts using the supplied

13mm spanner and then lift the steering cowl off. Next, remove the 4 M8 bolts which retain the steering column. and remove one of the bolts from the universal joint in order to separate the joint, and lift the complete column clear. To remove the nose guard, remove the two M8 retaining bolts located on either side of the chassis behind the reels – note, this will require a second 13mm spanner or socket.

Page 16: Autoguide Turf Trooper...Autoguide Turf Trooper Part No 34779 Operating Instructions and Parts Manual autoguide equipment Heddington, Nr Calne, Wiltshire. SN11 0PS Telephone: +44 (0)

16

Primary (engine) Belt: To check the primary belt tension, first lower the centre reel. Then working from the left hand side of the machine, reach underneath the chassis just behind the footplate and towards the centreline of the machine it should be possible to feel the primary belt. The belt should deflect approximately 10mm in each direction when moderate hand pressure is applied. To tension the primary belt slacken the 3 M8 bolts supporting the clutch assembly shown, but do NOT remove them. Then locate the clutch adjuster stud on the front of the machine and tighten until the correct belt tension is achieved. Once the belt is tensioned, re-tighten the 3 M8 clutch bolts securely. Note – tensioning the primary drive belt slackens the transmission and t-box belts, which must be re-tensioned as follows. Transmission Belt(s): Looking down on the machine from above, locate the transmission belt(s) as shown. At the midspan of the longest free span the belt should deflect by approximately 5mm under moderate hand pressure. To tension the transmission belt(s), locate & slacken the idler pivot nut, found under the idler pulley(s). Then locate the transmission adjuster screw and tighten until the correct belt tension is achieved. Once the belt(s) is/are correctly tensioned, ensure that the idler nut is securely re-tightened. T-box Belt: The t-box belt is routed above the transmission belt. This should deflect by approximately 10mm at the midspan of the longest free span. To tension, slacken the M8 idler bolt, found through the large slot, just forward of the seat box. Then locate the t-box adjuster screw on the RH side of the machine and tighten until the correct belt tension is achieved. Ensure that the idler pivot bolt is securely re-tightened after tensioning. Cutting Reel Belts: If is normal for the reel drive belts to stretch fairly significantly during the first few hours of operation. To re-tension the reel drive belts, simply rotate the tensioning collar located on the

Page 17: Autoguide Turf Trooper...Autoguide Turf Trooper Part No 34779 Operating Instructions and Parts Manual autoguide equipment Heddington, Nr Calne, Wiltshire. SN11 0PS Telephone: +44 (0)

17

mounting bar of each reel until the correct tension is achieved. If the tensioner runs out of adjustment, remove the reel and insert one of the supplied 1” washers between the tensioner plate and the reel, then rotate the collar as required. The rear reel utilises a central adjusting screw bearing onto the end of the support shaft. To tension the belt slacken the locking nut and rotate the screw until the correct tension is reached. (There should be approximately 25mm (1”) of movement up and down at the midspan of each belt.). Cutting reel adjustment: All cutting reels are adjusted in the factory before dispatch to ensure the best performance from new. Over time as the blades wear it will be necessary to readjust the reels to maintain optimum performance.

Stop engine and remove ignition key before proceeding. To adjust a reel, remove the belt guard and belt and locate the 4 M8 nyloc nuts which retain the blade bearings (two under the pulley and two at the non-drive end). Slacken these SLIGHTLY using a 13mm spanner. Then, ensuring that both sides are adjusted equally, turn the cylinder adjuster nuts anti-clockwise ¼ turn at a time to move the blade down. Check the cut using a piece of news paper which should be cut cleanly without tearing. Once the blade adjustment is correct, tighten the 4 M8 nyloc nuts carefully to avoid altering the adjustment. It is normal for a newly adjusted reel to be slightly noisy for a short time. If the noise does not subside after about 10 minutes of mowing, or if the noise is excessively loud then it is likely that the adjustment is too low and must be backed off. If a reel does not cut correctly even when adjusted then it is blunt and must be back lapped. This requires the reel to be turned backwards at approximately 60RPM and cannot be done on the machine or by hand. If you cannot acquire machinery to perform this operation then please return

the machine to your dealer or contact Autoguide Equipment Ltd directly. To ‘back lap’ a reel, with the reel turning backwards at the correct speed, apply grinding paste to the blade tips and work until a clean edge is achieved. If the blades are excessively blunt, rounded or severely damaged then they must be professionally reground.
