IntroductionTis tutorial is intended to provide you with a step by step approach to understanding basic drawing setup orAutoCAD 2009 L.

Te ollowing procedure can be applied to drawings started rom scratch or those started rom a template. Some variations will occur but in general the procedure can be applied similarly.

All two-dimensional drawings are a collection o line work, text, dimensions, and layouts. It is critical to un-derstand which FORMA settings to adjust and how to make drawings conorm to any standard. Tis will betrue whether you work solely in the model, use layouts, or even model and sheet les.

Tis tutorial will the review the FORMA settings or drawings and establish guidelines or correct represen-tation o all drawing elements.

Apply what you learn in the tutorial to the Practice exercises. Explore more by adding your own settings orstandards.

Audience: Users new to the AutoCAD 2009 L user interace engaged in a program o occupational training

or entry-level employment.Prerequisites: Working knowledge o the FORMA menu commands and the basic DRAW & MODIFY-commands.

    Features Covered in This Tutorial:

    Drawing type1.

    Units2.

    Format Settings for Architectural Drawings

Te ollowing is a step by step basic drawing setup tutorialexercise. Here is the given inormation rom which to start thedrawing setup:

    Tutorial Step by Step

    1. Determine the drawing type:

For all Architectural drawings use an Imperial le type.Tis le type will start with eet and inches as the basic unit

o measurement.Upon opening AutoCAD, use Start rom

Scratch or Use A emplate to select the cor-rect le type.

In Start rom Scratch select Imperial, then click OK.

    Or

In Use A emplate select Acadlt.dwtrom the list, then click OK.

    2. Set the units:

Te UNIS will control the measurement unit type andthe precision . Tis will also serve as the unit omeasure displayed to the user or any inquiry.Tis can be adjusted again later or greater orlesser precision, according to the needs o thedrawing.

    Go to :

    Menu Browser: Format: Units.

In the Length box area, change the yperom Decimal to Architectural. Tis willprovide eet and inches as the unit o measure-ment.

In the same area, change the Precision to0-0 1/16

Notice in the Sample Output area an ex-ample o the unit measurement type.

    Click OK

    3. Set the Drawing Limits:

Te visible grid is a representation o the drawing limitsand also helps the user to visualize the drawing within thedesired sheet size or the desired output scale.

Te drawing limits (L) are dened as a rectangular area

with a lower let hand corner (LLC) and an upper right handcorner (URC). Te drawing limits depend on the intendedoutput scale and sheet size. Te sides o the sheet are multi-plied by the scale actor to increase or decrease the drawinglimits.

Assume LLC is the origin or (0,0).

Some (x,y) coordinate is the URC or L o the drawinglimits.

Scale is the intended output scale. Tink o this as a ratio

between the actual model units and the printed paper units.Scale Factor is the amount o the model enlargement or

reduction to suit the paper. It is determined by dividing themodel units by the paper units

Sheet Size is the intended paper output. See reerencetable or standard sheet sizes.

    Example

Lets continue with the example o a drawing to be printed onletter size paper at 1/4=1-0 scale.

o determine the drawing limits we need to determine: printscale, scale actor, and sheet size to print. Te drawing limits aretwo coordinates that represent the rectangular area to be printed.

Assume the LLC o the drawing limits is (0,0). o solve or theURC coordinates, multiply each side o the sheet size by the scaleactor and the result will be the new URC.

Te scale is given as 1/4=1-0, solve or the scale actor (SF):

Te sheet size (SS) is given as Letter size or 8.5 x 11.

    Te drawing limits:

Access the Drawing Limits by starting with the

    Menu browser: Format:

    Drawing Limits.

Accept (0,0) as the LLCand enter the result as thenew URC to set the drawinglimits.

    Scale: 1/4 = 1-0, which means every 1/4 on paper1.equals 1 in the model.

Solve or the scale actor (SF), where SF=m/p.2.

SF = m/p, where m is the model and p is the paper3.units

    SF= (1-0)/(1/4)=48, the scale actor is unitless4.

    Assume LLC = 0,01.

    Need URC = L =SSxSF, some (X, Y)2.

    8.5 x 48= 408 or 34 (X)3.11 x 48 = 528 or 44 (Y)4.

Te drawing limits will be LLC= (0,0) and the5.URC=(34,44)

    A model area o34,44 will t on8.5x 11 whenprinted at 1/4=1-0

4a. Use Annotative styles for Text

Create a new text style based on Annotative. You canalso navigate to the Annotate tab and then to the ext panelto select the ext Style icon.

    FORMAT: Text style

Te desired text height can vary or diferent types o textsuch as notes, titles, and dimensions. In general notes will be1/8, 1/4, or 3/32 but not smaller than 1/16.

Create two text styles, oneor notes called notes and oneor dimensions called dims.Create annotative text styles oreach diferent type and size otext where the paper text heightis the desired text print size.

First, select the Annota-tive text style, select New, andset the paper text height tothe desired print size, i.e. 1/8.Choose a legible ont and makeany other adjustments.

Note: Use either MEX or DEXto input text in the model. Choosethe appropriate style or the desiredont and print size. As you place textyou can apply one or more Annota-tive scales in which the text can beviewed and automatically resized. You will be able to move each in-

stance o the text displayed or eachscale without one afecting the other.

    5. Set the drafting settings:

Right-click over the GRID button and selectSEINGS. Set the grid on, and use a grid spac-ing appropriate or the drawing limits. For example, use 1 oot or 2 oot spacing. oo small a spacing willmake the grid too dense and thereore cause it to not

appear.Set the polar angles to track. Use 45 degree

angle increments or as small as 15. Tis will en-sure that the most typical angles will be trackedduring drawing. Use additional angles to trackunique angles such as 19 or 32 degrees. Addi-tional angles are not incremental.

urn the object snap on and set minimalsnap modes. oo many selected snap modes willslow the drawing down. Remember you canalways access the pop-up object snap to ocuson a particular snap mode or one instance. o

access the pop-up object snap, use shit-rightclick in the drawing area.

Click OK to exit the drating settings dialogbox and accept your changes.
