Rumours have it that Apple is considering using making automobiles. The computer and smart-phone company has a secret project called “Titan” and plans to launch an electric car. The Reuters News Agency says Apple is talking to experts at carmakers and automotive suppliers, including Canada’s Magna International, on how to make an entire vehicle, not just designing automotive software or individual components. The Apple Car is what the media has taken to calling the electric car project that’s rumored to be in development at Apple under the code name “Project Titan.”
Apple is said to have hundreds of employees work-ing on creating an electric vehicle at a secret lo-cation near its Cupertino headquarters. Little is known about the car, but sources have suggested it may resemble a minivan. The car may or may not include self-driving technology.
The Apple Car is in the very early stages of develop-ment, and Apple is still in the process of recruiting people for the project and meeting with car mak-ers and automotive suppliers. The project is being led by Steve Zadesky, VP of Product Design, who has Cook’s permission to recruit 1,000 employees, many from within Apple.

Lexus, Buick, Cadillac, Honda and Porsche are the top five in J.D. Power’s annual vehicle survey Lexus is the most dependable car brand for the fourth consecutive year in rankings that increasingly hinge on high-tech features. Buick finished second, followed by Toyota and Cadillac. Honda and Porsche tied to round out the top five spots in the annual survey, released Wednesday by the consulting firm J.D. Power. The survey asked original owners of vehicles from the 2012 model year about problems expe-rienced in the last year.
Lexus owners reported 89 problems per 100 vehicles; the industry average was 147 problems. Fiat was the worst performing brand, with 273 problems per 100 vehicles. Land Rover, Jeep, Mini and Dodge rounded out the bottom five performers. In rank-ings of individual vehicles, General Motors and Toyota tied with seven segment win-ners each. The Chevrolet Malibu was the most dependable midsize car, while the Toyota Corolla was the highest ranked small car.
More than 34,000 vehicle owners were surveyed for the study in November and December. J.D. Power has been conducting the dependability study since 1989

Nissan has come up with a special glow-in –the dark paint for its Nissan Leaf electric car Working with Pro-Teq, the company created by British inventor Hamish Scott, Nis-
san is the first auto manufacturer to apply glow-in-the dark paint to a production vehicle. Pro-Teq is the distributor of STARPATH; a sprayed-on coating that absorbs UV light during the day and which then can glow for 8-10 hours after the sun sets.
This special paint is being used by Nissan to promote how the Leaf EV’s low operating costs are allowing owners to install solar panels for their homes with the money saved. This not only de-creases a household’s carbon footprint, it means Leaf owners are able to charge their vehicles at home for free.
Nissan says that while other glowing car paints are available, as are glow-in-the-dark car wraps, the ultraviolet-energized paint created for Nissan Europe is unique because of its secret formula that uses entirely organic materials. One of the key ingredients is a rare natural earth product called Strontium Aluminate, which is solid, odourless and chemically and biologically inert. While some aftermarket companies have applied non-organic glow-in-the-dark paint to vehicles before, Nissan is the first automaker to directly apply such technology. If made commercially available, Nissan claims this paint would last for 25 years – about twice the expected life of a typical car.
BC Clean Energy Vehicle Program gets Green Light
British Columbia’s new car dealers are applauding the reintroduction of a Clean Energy Vehicle incen-tive program in last week’s provincial budget.
“On behalf of BC’s new car dealers, we are pleased to see the announcement in the BC Budget of $7.5 million for a Clean Energy Vehicles (CEV) Point of Sale Incentive pro-gram along with additional funding for charging equip-ment incentives, sales incentives and public outreach,” said Blair Qualey, President and CEO, New Car Dealers Association of BC (NCDA). “The Association, on behalf of its members, has consistently advocated for the con-tinuation of incentives for the purchase of clean energy vehicles and congratulate the BC Liberal Government on their continued leadership.”
The newly announced funding will provide incentives for qualifying new battery electric, fuel cell electric and plug-
in hybrid electric. Funding of this incentive program will help to continue attracting new clean energy vehicles to the BC market. The NCDA will once again administer this program on behalf of the provincial government.
“British Columbia has the highest per-capita electric vehicle sales and the largest charging infrastructure in Canada,” said Bill Bennett, Minister of Energy and Mines. “We look forward to working with the New Car Dealers Association on the renewed Clean Energy Vehicle pro-gram and encouraging even more British Columbian’s to consider clean, green options the next time they visit the showroom looking for a new car.”
BC has now established itself as a market with high de-mand and infrastructure in place for manufacturers to offer new electric, plug-in hybrid electric, and fuel cell cars.

Land Rover and Jaguar recalling
104,000 Vehicles with Brake
and Light Issues
Land Rover and Jaguar has announced re-calls for three issues that affects 104,000 units across North America. The largest recall
concerns a brake hose issue that may potentially rupture, causing the loss of brake fluid which may result in front brake failure. The recall affects up to 74,648 Range Rovers sold between 2006 and 2012. Transport Canada says 2,838 Canadian units are affected. Land Rover dealers will replace the front brake hoses at no cost to the owner.
A separate recall affects 4,787 Jaguar XK units – model years 2012 to 2015. The software recall concerns the side parking lights that may turn off after about five minutes. Dealers will reflash the ECU and install an update to rectify the issue at no cost to the owner. Dealers will inspect your brake lines and hoses and will reroute or repair as needed.
The recalls are expected to take effect on March 13th, 2015. Have your VIN ready and contact your Jaguar Land Rover dealer to find out if your ve-hicle is affected.

New Mazda2 is coming to Canada
Unveiled at the Montreal auto show recently, Mazda showed off the new version of their tiny Mazda2 sub-compact car. The fourth generation 2 will go on sale in Canada later this year. The new Mazda2 will have some
sleek design cues from the latest Mazda3 and have more interior room thanks to 110 millimetres stretch and a 25 mm height increase. Wheel size also goes up from 15-inch (standard) and 16-inch (optional).
Interior wise, Mazda says the driver’s seat, steering wheel, pedals and gearshift lever have been repositioned for a broader range of driver sizes. The interior has also been given a makeover with better materials. New technology includes a 7-inch touchscreen and Mazda Connect infotainment system as found on oth-er larger Mazda’s. Options will include a heads-up display and SD-card based navigation system. For now, only one gasoline engine will be offered - a more powerful and fuel efficient SkyActiv 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine. While community service and volunteering are year-round activities at BCAA, the holiday season was a particularly special time at the 28 Service Locations, Road Assist and Member Contact Centre, and home office.
In November and December, 2014, BCAA and over 1,000 employees from across B.C. rallied together to donate $245,000 to United Way, a record for the organization. Funds raised benefit United Way branches across B.C. and help key initiatives including Pov-erty to Possibility, child anti-bullying programs such as Beyond the Hurt, and seniors’ isolation.
BCAA employees throughout the province also engaged in some friendly competition to encourage food donations for local food banks. The results? BCAA collected over 7,300 pounds of food for local food banks around the province, enough to help feed over 550 households for up to four days each.
By organizing local volunteer opportunities for our employees, BCAA strives to have a meaningful impact on our communities throughout British Columbia. Through your BCAA Membership, you enable us to give back and make a difference for those who need it most, and look forward to sharing more in 2015.
Corvette Racing returns for its 16th season with the start of the 2015 race season. In addition to 12 races for the 2015 IMSA TUDOR United SportsCar Championship, the C o r -
vettes will travel to France for the 24 Heures de Mans, hosted by Automo-bile Club de l’Ouest.
In the TUDOR series, the Corvette C7.R competes in the GT Le Mans class. A naturally aspirated 5.5-liter engine powers the C7.R, featuring direct injection and a dry sump oil system.
“Direct injection offers two ad-vantages for the race team,” said Mark Kent, director of Racing for Chevrolet. “First, it offers driv-ers more precise throttle control, so that even the smallest changes in the driver’s throttle position delivers a proportional response from the engine. Second, direct injection typically improves fuel economy
about 3 percent. That could be enough to bypass one fuel stop during a 24-hour race. Given that races are often won and lost in the pits, a 3 percent gain in fuel economy could translate to a significant advantage in track position.”
Driving the No. 3 Corvette is the team of Jan Magnussen, Anto-nio Garcia and Ryan Brisco. Magnussen is a well-season racer, winning world champion-ships in several classes and taking first place
in four 24 Heures de Mans races. Last season, Magnussen and Garcia set a TUDOR record by winning four consecutive TUDOR races (Long Beach, Laguna Seca, Watkins Glen and Bow-manville), and took second place at Le Mans.
The 2015 Corvette Racing Schedule starts March 21: Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring Track at Sebring International Raceway, Sebring, Florida with the Canadian leg on: July 12 at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, Bowmanville, Ontario, Cana-
da. The season end with final race at: Petit Le Mans Track: Road Atlanta on October 3rd.

The All-New 2016 Toyota Tacoma
The new 2016 Tacoma was primarily developed by the Toyota engineering team at Toyota Technical Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Starting with the frame, they added high strength steel to enhance rigidity and overall strength.
Ultra-high strength steel was integrated into the body shell using a new hot stamp-ing process that reduces weight.
To create a truck to meet the needs of active drivers on a variety of tamed and un-tamed surfaces, the suspension was fine-tuned to help deliver a smoother on-road ride, while making it even more capable off-road.
The new Tacoma will be powered by a 2.7-litre four-cylinder engine and an all-new, segment-first 3.5-litre Atkinson cycle V6 equipped with Toyota’s D-4S technology, featuring both direct and port fuel injection.
Both engines will be paired to a new six-speed automatic transmission with elec-tronic shift delivering quick and easy shifting. The V6 can also be mated to a new six-speed manual transmission. The new powertrain makes the Tacoma more powerful and fuel efficient than ever before.
Serious, yet fun! This is the Toyota truck design DNA. The Tacoma and Tundra are amazingly capable trucks that are designed to reflect their capability. The Tacoma shares big brother Tundra’s more chiseled face, with a hex grille. From there, Tacoma expresses its own identity.
Inspired by desert racing, CALTY designers in Newport Beach, Calif. and Ann Arbor, Michigan made the new Tacoma all about recreational action and athletic agility. To achieve this, the new Tacoma’s wheel flares are strong and muscular for greater wheel travel and the high-lift image reflects its purposeful capability. Four new wheel designs range from 16 to 18 inches.
The front end portrays an aggressive attitude with its bold upper grille and a taller, more muscular hood. Mounted high above the clamp-shaped bumper sits slim, high technology headlights that feature projection beam lamps with available LED Daytime Running Lights.
From behind, the new locking tailgate emphasizes Tacoma’s wide stance and tough image. The tailgate features an integrated spoiler for improved aerodynamics and a
stamped Tacoma logo. The tailgate also adds an easy lowering feature, which allows it to slowly retract, preventing it from slamming down. For the first time ever, Tacoma is available with a tri-fold hard tonneau cover for securing gear when you’re away from the truck.
Tacoma’s tough exterior is complemented by an interior that conveys a sport truck im-age reflecting an athletic, go anywhere, off-road feel. Once inside, drivers will notice a “handlebar” design theme in the instrument panel for a more driver-focused experi-ence.
In addition to offering more premium features, Toyota engineers also made the new Tacoma quieter than ever. To accomplish this, all seals were enhanced and a multi-layer acoustic windshield and sound-absorbing headliner were added. Finally, a floor silencer pad further reduces road noise. The new Toyota Tacoma pickup will be in dealer ships soon

2015 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD All the truck you could want!
For 2015: the new Chevrolet Silverado line of pickup trucks offers a variety of con-figurations for all customers tastes and requirements. Styling- wise, the Silverado features the handsome, brawny, square- jawed looks so beloved by is loyal legions
of fans. It is all about ‘big’ here…big lights, big grille, big wide hood and big bumpers dominate the bulldog like frontal aspect. The base two-door, regular cab starts with a $27,930 price. However, the Crew Cab depending on the spec chosen and with its up-per trim lines, options packages and a plethora of extras can easily add a hefty $15,000 to $25,000 to the price.
The Silverado comes with a range of the latest six- and eight-cylinder engines, name-ly: A 4.3L V6, or one of two V8s, either a 5.3L or 6.2L. All of these engine options use cylinder deactivation, direct injection, variable-valve timing, and other technology to be more fuel efficient. All power plants arrive with a 6-speed automatic transmission. Our tester was powered by the newly developed EcoTec 4.3 Liter V-6 mak-ing 285 horsepower and 305 lb-ft, and with enough torque to power crew-cab models or trailer-tow.
Three different cargo-bed lengths are offered on the Silverado: 5’8”, 6’6”, and 8’’ bed sizes. Our Crew Cab model came with the 6’6” cargo box. GM has improved the pickup box design some-what, adding a CornerStep bumper
plus hand-grip pockets, both of which make climbing up to access cargo easier. Other good ideas are a lighter tailgate that is now rotary damped and easier on the arms and fingers to lift and fold down, and LED lights tucked under the bed rails. The interior is smart and comfortable and Chevrolet have wisely resisted the temptation to make it too car like in the dash and trim. It a macho truck, even on the inside with a row of pro-fessional looking gauges, in the dash and big chunky controls and knob that you can use even with your gloves on. As this is a work truck, there is a lot of useful storage with an optional front centre console with combined compartments, and multiple sockets for laptops, phone chargers and what have you.
On the road, the new Silverado impressed me with its comfortable ride, even though its uses a traditional leaf-sprung rear suspension, the Silverado’s long wheelbase damp-ens out potholes and bad roads. It is also impressively quiet at highway speeds. How-
ever it is when you come to park that the fun begins! The extend bed and huge size mean you really have to keep an eye on the surrounding when maneuvering although a back camera does help. With the 6.6 foot bed the Silverado has a stellar payload tow-ing ability and this 1500 series is an excellent truck to consider if you are in the market.

Drive CarefullyDriving fast tends to burn more fuel and is a less fuel efficient way of motoring. You can save up to 25% more fuel by sticking to the speed limit, or staying below it. Driv-ing in a way that it is not aggressive will also help matters. For example, you should be cautious when braking, as braking too sharply can contribute to your car’s fuel emissions. Revving the engine is another no-no, as it increases fuel consumption too. Driving carefully also makes you more aware of potential hazards that would otherwise force you to brake sharply.
Use Gears WiselyTravelling in a low gear when it is not necessary will not save on fuel. In fact, it can actually waste fuel. Because of this, it is far better to move up into the top gear as soon as you need to without being aggressive on the accelerator.
Limit the Air ConditioningSwitching on the air conditioning is only fuel efficient if you drive at high speed (which burns more fuel anyway). It is usually better to open the windows instead, as using the air conditioning can increase your car’s fuel consumption by as much as 10%.
Switch Off the Engine when Stationary
If you are going to be stationary for more than a minute as it wastes a considerable amount of fuel. It is best to switch off the engine when the car is not moving to in-crease your fuel efficiency. Waiting in a traffic jam is an exception to this.
Check Tyre PressuresMake sure that your car’s tyre pressures are at the correct level for maximum fuel efficiency. It is best to do this at least once a month before you leave home. If you find that the tyres are not correctly inflated, you can add air to them at most petrol stations. If your car tyres are too soft, they can wear down more easily and burn fuel more quickly. Tyres that are not properly inflated can increase your car’s fuel con-sumption by up to 6%, as they create more resistance, which means that the engine has to work harder to compensate.
Lighten the LoadTravelling light is essential for fuel efficient motoring. Carrying extra items in the boot that are not strictly necessary means that your car’s engine has to work harder, which in turn increases your fuel emissions. If in doubt, it is best to leave them out so that you can drive more efficiently.
Fuel efficient motoring is often a matter of slightly altering your driving style to con-serve as much fuel as possible. It shouldn’t inconvenience you too much, and your wallet and the environment will thank you for it!

Automotive Lease Guide (ALG) and Canadian Black Book (CBB) have announced their 2015 respec-tive vehicle residual value awards for Canada, and
Toyota/Lexus has emerged big winner, taking a com-bined 17 top spots from the two organizations.
Residual values indicate how well a vehicle retains value as it ages: the higher a vehicle’s residual, the more mon-ey it commands on the used market. Both organizations look at residuals for vehicles from past years (this year
CBB analyzed data for 2011 models, while ALG look at 2012s) to predict which current models will retain the highest percentage of their MSRP after going home with their first owners.
Subaru also did well in the ALG, earning top honours for its Impreza (compact car), Legacy (mid-size car), BRZ (sports car) and Outback (mid-size two-row utility ve-hicle).
Honda won four awards from the two organizations:
CBB named the Fit tops among sub-compact cars, while ALG called CR-V number one among compact utility vehicles. Both groups agreed that the Odyssey is best among minivans.
Mercedes-Benz won two CBB awards, for the Sprinter (full-size van) and G-Class (full-size luxury SUV. Land Rover’s Range Rover Sport tops ALG’s premium two-row mid-size utility vehicle group, and named Land Rover best overall premium brand.

2015 Lexus ES300hHigh Standards in this Luxury Hybrid Sedan
For 2015, the Lexus ES 300h has a few minor chang-es – a backup camera now standard along with a new optional multimedia system. The standard Display Audio system features a seven-inch touch-screen, which can be divided into three sections to show different types of information simultane-ously. Other features of the new multimedia system include HD Radio with complimentary traffic and weather data, Bluetooth audio, back up camera and automatic phone-book transfer.
A new optional feature for 2015 is Lexus Enform Re-mote. This subscription-based service allows own-ers to monitor and control certain vehicle functions with a compatible iOS or Android smartphone. This feature allows owners to remotely lock and unlock the doors, start or stop the engine, set the climate control, and monitor the cars use
Otherwise, the 2015 Lexus ES 300h is essentially unchanged inside and out.
At the heart of the ES300h is the Lexus Hybrid Drive system comprising a: 2.5-litre four-cylinder Atkinson cycle engine, a high efficiency electric motor and battery system designed to improve fuel economy and durability.
The signature Lexus design of the new ES features a lower, progressive profile, and clean, continuous styling lines from front to rear. All four corners are pulled tightly inward to the wheel arches, creating distinctive low slung, sleek proportions.
The 2015 ES 300h hybrid fea-tures a distinctive rear design with hidden exhaust and an in-tegrated spoiler. It looks good from any angle.
so new are suspension and steering changes and a stiffer body deliver more precise han-dling.
Available comfort and convenience features in-clude: manual door window shades, a power rear shade, and a one-touch power trunk closer. As standard the Lexus ES300 comes with 17” Alumi-num Alloy Wheels, Electronically Controlled Brake System (ECB)
Air Conditioning , Dual Zone Automatic Climate Control, Dust, Pollen, Deodorizing Air Filter, Lexus Premium Audio , AM/FM/CD/MP3/WMA, Bluetooth Capability, Integrated XM Satellite Radio, Audio Auxiliary Input Jack, USB Audio Input and 8 Speak-ers.

On the road the ES 300h hybrid offers the driver four modes: Normal, Sport, Eco and EV. EV mode al-lows short distance drives, at reduced speed, using only the power from the hybrid battery pack. Nor-mal mode provides a blend of performance and ef-ficiency that is suited to everyday driving, while Eco mode favours fuel economy. Sport mode increases powertrain responsiveness.
An array of safety features aid the driver. The avail-able Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) helps detect vehicles in side blind spots. The RCTA alerts the driver to rear cross traffic when backing out of a parking spot. Available Lane De-parture Alert (LDA) is integrated with automatic high beam dimming technology. The available Pre-Collision System (PCS) uses sub-millimetre wave ra-dar to detect obstructions and prepare the vehicle for a potential collision.

Tesla Motors, the American electric-car manufacturer has opened its first retail store in the BC Lower Mainland. Growing consumer interest in going electric, pro electric vehicle municipal and pro-vincial policies mark Tesla’s first foray into a boutique store in the trendy Robson street enclave in downtown Vancouver. The store is the second Tesla store in Canada’s second, following Toronto and is located at 929 Robson Street, in the heart of the city.
The first Canadian dealership for Tesla Motors opened its doors in Toronto last year. Tesla say the dealership–or Tesla Design Centre’s –are located in high profile shopping centres rather than auto
malls as they bring in more foot traffic Elon Musk, Co-Founder and CEO of Tesla Motors explains in a blog post that car buyers have generally already made up their mind on what car they want before they even head to the dealerships. “That is why we are de-liberately positioning our store and gallery locations in high foot traffic, high visibility retail venues, like malls and shopping streets that people regularly visit in a relatively open-minded buying mood. This allows us to interact with potential customers and have them learn about our cars from Tesla Product Specialists be-fore they have decided which new car to buy.”

Forget Hybrids! The new buzzword in green motoring is fuel cell technology. For the second time in a generation, Toyota has re-imagined the future of mobility. The Toyota Mirai is a four-door, mid-size sedan with performance
that fully competes with traditional internal combustion engines – but it uses no gasoline and emits nothing but water vapor. The ground-breaking fuel cell elec-tric vehicle is powered by hydrogen, re-fuels in about five minutes, and travels up to 300 miles (or around 483 kilometres) on a full tank.
Mirai will be available to customers in California beginning in fall 2015, with ad-ditional markets tracking the expansion of a convenient hydrogen refueling infrastructure. Powered by an industry-leading fuel cell electric drivetrain and supported by an exceptional 360-degree ownership experience, Mirai marks a turning point for consumer expectations for a zero-emission vehicle.
In its basic operation, a fuel cell vehicle works much like a battery electric vehicle. But instead of the large drive battery, Mirai’s fuel cell stack combines hydrogen gas from tanks with oxygen to produce electricity that powers the electric motor.
Toyota’s proprietary fuel cell stack represents a major leap forward in perfor-mance, delivering one of the world’s best power outputs of 3.1 kW/L at a dra-matically reduced size that fits under the front driver and passenger seats. The system provides Mirai with a maximum output of 153hp, accelerating from 0-100 in about 9.0 seconds and delivering a passing time of about 3 seconds from 40-65 km/h
What’s more, thanks to fuel cell technology’s versatility and adaptability, the Mi-
rai offers performance options that go well beyond a traditional automobile. In fact, the vehicle will be offered with an optional power take off (PTO) device that enables Mirai to serve as a mobile generator in case of emergency. With the PTO accessory, Mirai is capable of powering home essentials in an average house for up to a week in an emergency – while emitting only water in the process.
Toyota began fuel cell development in Japan in the early 90s and has developed a series of fuel cell vehicles, subjecting them to more than a million kilometres of road testing. In the last two years alone, fuel cell test vehicles have logged thou-sands of kilometres on North American roads. This includes hot testing in Death Valley, cold testing in Yellowknife, Canada, steep grade hill climbs in San Francisco and high altitude trips in Colorado. The Toyota-designed carbon fiber hydrogen tanks have also undergone extreme testing to ensure their strength and durabil-ity in a crash.
This extended legacy of research and development is reflected in Mirai’s safety and reliability. At Toyota’s advanced Higashifuji Safety Center, the vehicle has been subjected to extensive crash testing to evaluate a design specifically intend-ed to address frontal, side and rear impacts and to provide excellent protection of vehicle occupants. A high level of collision safety has also been achieved to help protect the fuel cell stack and high-pressure tanks against body deformation.
Mirai will also feature a broad range of standard onboard safety technologies, in-cluding vehicle pre-collision, blind spot monitor, lane departure alert, drive start control and automatic high beams.

Will fuel cell technology replace Hybrids?
