Fireflies are small winged insectsthat glow in the dark but why dothey shine and what creates thisspark within them

Theyrsquore bright and twinkling likelittle stars I wish I could haveglowed like them but I canrsquot Cananyone tell me why

Imagine a dark moonless nightwhen you have gone campingwith your classmates and youlose your way What would youdo Will you not try contactingyour friends by flashing yourtorchlight

Well fireflies or lsquolightning bugsrsquoas they are sometimes called dothe same except that they havean unlimited supply of lightwithin themselves That is whyfireflies never worry about fusedlight bulbs or electricity tariffsThey seem immensely happy justflying around and glowing- this istheir signal to say ldquoHey lookIrsquom hererdquo

A celebration takes place a softfirework display so to say andbright light is produced which isthe lsquoglowrsquo of the firefly

Fireflies therefore are bio-luminescent but they are not theonly ones Different types of fishand marine creatures in the seaalso produce their own lights

The glow of the firefly functionslike a light switch and isperiodically turned on and off bythe insect It does this by sendinga special lsquomessagersquo from its brainto the lsquolight organrsquo inside itsbody that is its abdomen andsoon the chemical reactionbegins and the glow is produced

The grown up fireflies use theirlsquoglowrsquo to call out to their matesIn fact female fireflies preferlsquoflashy malesrsquo that can blink thelongest or at a faster pace

Once they see this special glowthe females respond to it byswitching on their own lights Thefirefly-mates soon meet andbaby fireflies get created

The younger fireflies or thelarvae unlike their parents usetheir glow mainly to chasepredators away The chemicalswithin their bodies are toxic andhave a horrible taste so creaturesthat come to feast on them getput off and go hunting elsewherefor tastier munchies

1 Fireflies are not flies but beetles They are oftencalled lsquolightning bugsrsquo but they arenrsquot bugs either

2 Different species of fireflies glow in differentcolors that range from yellow to green Fireflies thatflit around in the dark emit a greenish glow whilethose found outdoors during twilight give out ayellowish light
