Chuskit Goes to SchoolAuthor Sujatha PadmanabhanIllustrator Madhuvanti Anantharajan

Chuskit woke up early thatmorning It was a veryspecial day and she was tooexcited to sleep She eagerlylooked out of the room throughthe window next to her bed

It was spring time in Ladakh and the apricot trees were in fullbloom Two magpies had alreadybegun their day and were busylooking for insects to eat HerAma-ley was awake too Shecould hear her in the kitchenmaking gur-gur tea

2

Chuskit had been awake for thelast hour This was a day she wasgoing to remember for a longtime Can you guess why

No it was not Losar theNew Year festival That wasmany months away Nor was itany special day in her villagelike the gonpa festival or awedding day

Today was going to be Chuskits first day at school Atnine years she had waited along long time for this

3

The school was not very far awayfrom her home To getthere you had to walk up tothe main road Just beforethe prayer wheel you tookthe path to the left of theroad that ran along anarrow stream Near the poplartrees you crossed the stream byjumping over the big rocks

Once you got to the other side a short walk up a slope took you to the school All the children of Skitpo Yul Chuskits village walked to school everyday and with ease But not little Chuskit Shehad a disability and could notwalk

4

Chuskit was born with legs that did not work likeeveryone elsersquos Her father had taken her to thevillage amchi and then to the doctors in Leh Butno amount of medicine had helped her walk

At first Chuskit did not realise that she was in anyway different from the Stobdan her youngerbrother or her cousins But soon there were manythings she could not do as easily as them

ldquoThat does not matterrdquo her Aba-ley would tell herwhenever she felt sad ldquoYou can stitch better thanany of them And you draw very wellrdquo Aba-ley oftenbrought her some colour pencils from Leh

5

Chuskit would sit at the kitchenwindow everyday and draw whatshe saw while her Ama-leycooked She could see herfamilys animals being taken tograze every morning

She could see the blue waters ofthe stream that flowed near byAnd she would be the first one toannounce the arrival ofa visitor to their house

6

Chuskit used a chair fittedwith wheels to move aroundElders called it a wheelchair Youcould move it in any direction-forward left right and evenbackward - by moving the wheelswith your hands You onlyneeded to have really strongarms to push the weight of yourbody and the chair

When Aba-ley first brought thewheelchair home everyone inher family was very excited

7

ldquoNow I wonrsquot have to carryChuskit everywhere I can wheelher aroundrdquo said Ama-ley withtears of happiness in her eyesldquoAnd I will be able to gowherever I wantrdquo criedChuskit excitedly

ldquoPlease please could I ride onyour wheelchair once in a wayrdquobegged StobdanHe wanted to wheel itaround too It looked like funBilla the big black cat jumped onto the wheel-chair and stretchedacross the seatldquoYes this is far more comfortablethan the sack cloth I sleep onrdquoshe purred

8

Slowly Chuskit learnt to useher wheelchair She wouldask her mother to seat her inthe wheelchair outside herhome every evening

From here she would watchchildren returning from schoolchattering and laughing merrilyin groups In a while the eveningbus would return from Lehbringing back people from workand the market place How muchmore exciting the world wasfrom here than from the kitchenwindow

9

One evening when Chuskit was sitting outsidethe house with her grandfather a young boy cameup to her He carried a letter which he handed overto her grandfather ldquoJulley The bus driver asked meto give this to yourdquo he saidldquoMy name is Abdulrdquo he said turning to Chuskit ldquoIstudy Class 6 at the Government School I haveoften wondered why you donrsquot come to schoolrdquo

ldquoJulley Abdulrdquo said Chuskit ldquoI have never been toschool The path to the school is too uneven andpebbly and my wheelchair will get stuck Besides Icannot cross the little stream in front of the schoolIt would be very difficult for my parents to carry meto school and back everydayrdquo

ldquoBut would you like to come to schoolrdquo askedAbdul

10

ldquoOf courserdquo replied ChuskitldquoI hear my younger brothertalk of all that he does at school Iwant to study like all ofyou make friends play gameswear a uniform and evenwrite exams Sometimes mybrotherteaches me songs that hehas learnt at school and I love itYou may not believe this butI sometimes dream of carryinga school bag even eatingpacked lunchrdquo

ldquoEnough Enoughrdquo interruptedher grandfatherldquoStop dreaming Chuskit Youknow you cannot go to school Ihave told you this many timesLearn as much as you can athomerdquo

11

ldquoMeme-ley pleaserdquo pleadedChuskit softly with tears inher eyes as her grandfatherwalked away angrily ldquoMeme-leydoes not understand how I feelrdquosaid Chuskit ldquoI remember theday my brother recited his tableswith such pride even the time helearned to read My parents werevery happy as they have neverbeen to school I too want tolearn to read and do math Doyou understandrdquo

ldquoI dordquo said AbdulldquoChuskit I will see you again Imust go now My mother will bewaiting for me Julleyrdquo

12

The next day Abdul wentstraight to the Headmasterrsquosroom after assembly ldquoJulley Azhang-leyrdquo he said ldquoIwant to talk to you about a girlfrom our village who does not goto school Her name is ChuskitShe is Stobdanrsquos sisterrdquo

ldquoOh yesrdquo replied theHeadmaster ldquoI know her She isdisabled isnrsquot sherdquo

13

ldquoYes Azhang-ley She uses a wheelchair tomove around but cannot reach school as the pathfrom her home is too rough and uneven I waswondering if we could do anything to help herAzhang-ley We could all get together and level thepath and also build a small bridge across thestreamrdquo

ldquoThatrsquos very thoughtful of you Abdulrdquo saidthe Headmaster as he patted him on the backldquoWhat made you think of Chuskit and herproblemsrdquo

ldquoAzhang-ley last week we read about thefundamental rights of citizens in our civics class Allchildren have a right to education That includesChuskit as well does it notrdquo

ldquoYes you are right Abdul Let me discuss this withthe other teachersrdquo replied the Headmaster

14

The next day the Headmaster called all the teachers to a meeting He shared Abdulrsquosideas with the group and asked the teachers what they felt ldquoImpossiblerdquo said one ofthem ldquoHow can we have a disabled child in our school How will she be able to writeplay and go to the toilet like the other children dordquo

15

ldquoThats exactly what we have to workoutrdquo said the Headmaster ldquoI hear that in thevillage of Mentok Yul the Village Education Committee has helped build aspecial toilet for one of their disabled children We could ask them whatthey have done But first we will have to get Chuskit to school Then wecould think of ways of helping her do things in schoolrdquo

16

Two weeks later there was great excitement at the Government School All the

children had gathered outside in the playgroundThey had come to school withouttheir school bags

there were going to be no classes today

17

The teachers divided the children into groups One groupworked in front of Chuskitshouse and another on the pathalong the stream A third groupwith some of the older childrenworked hard to help some oftheir teachers build a strongwooden bridge across thestream

18

The children laughed and sang as they removed stones androcks levelled paths and carriedwooden planks to the streamThe Headmaster went from onegroup to another making surethat all went according to plan

19

Chuskitrsquos parents providedeveryone with hot tea andbiscuitsChuskitrsquos grandfathersat under a willow tree by thestream watching the busy schoolchildren ldquoI never dreamt Irsquod seea day like thisrdquo he thought tohimself as he wiped a tear thatrolled down his cheek

At the end of the day it was atired but happy group of childrenthat returnedto their homes The pathfrom Chuskitrsquos home to theschool was now ready

20
