AUSXC WORLD JUNIOR/U23 TOUR 2019-20 The AUSXC Junior/ U23 Tour for 2019/20 has two distinct periods, designed for athletes preparing to race at 2020 Winter Youth Olympic Games and the 2020 Junior & U23 World Championships as well as for athletes building towards future international events. Both training periods will be predominantly based in Davos, Switzerland. Daily training and living arrangements will be managed by Australian coaches, with sessions also coordinated with the AUS senior team. Local Swiss and other European competitions will be used for event preparation and race experience. PROGRAM AIMSThe specific athletic aims of the trip are:

1. Prepare athletes to compete at the Winter Youth

Olympic Game and the Junior / U23 World

Championships.

2. Provide international training and competition

experience.

3. Make technical gains in classic and skating.

4. Educate athletes on training and competition

routines and foster a professional attitude

towards XC ski racing.

5. Create positive living environments and build

cohesive team relationships.

LOCATION / FACILITIESThe current National Team base in Davos has been a

regular destination for Australian Team athletes over

many years. Davos has reliable snow, extensive trails,

and is also the home of Switzerland’s primary Sport

Gymnasium for Winter Sport. Davos is approximately

two hours by car from Zurich airport, and also easily

accessible via train. Daily training will take place on the

Davos ski trails, which are within walking distance of

everywhere in Davos. Access to gym facilities will be

arranged via Davos Nordic.

SUPPORT STAFFValerio Leccardi is the head coach for all AUSXC

international programs. During the first training period

the Junior Team will be led by Callum Watson and Teresa

Riman. Callum and Teresa coached/managed the

AUSXC Junior Tour in 2018/2019 and at the 2019

World Junior Championships. Callum will lead

the team to the WYOG, with additional

support from the AOC. Teresa will

continue to manage the Junior Team

during the start of the second

period, when she will be joined

by coach Tom McMahon.

ACCOM & MEALSThe team will live in self-catered apartments in Davos

Dorf, with shopping & cooking under the coordination of

team coaches. When travelling to competitions full-board

catering will be provided.

TRANSPORTFlights will be coordinated by SSA XC program staff, with

all flight expenses to be paid directly by the athletes and

their families. Land transport will be coordinated by team

coaches and included in the tour fee.

WHO CAN ATTEND?These tours are for primarily for members of the WYOG,

Junior and U23 Teams, with priority for athletes who have

qualified or have the best chance to qualify for the 2020

WYOG and Junior-U23 World Championship. Athletes

focussing on training and not eligible/qualified for either

of these events should ideally train with the team during

the first training period, following the same competition

plan as the WYOG athletes.

REQUIREMENTSAll athletes wishing to take part in the 2019/2020

Junior / U23 Tour will need to formally apply, including

providing details of their training history, their goals for

the 2019/2020 season, and a summary of their skiing

strengths & weaknesses. The application process will be

communicated to all eligible athletes.

All athletes will need to read and sign SSA’s Athlete

Agreement for training camps and tours. Physical /

medical screening is also a mandatory requirement and

will be coordinated via National Team medical staff.

INSURANCEInsurance covering cross country skiing competition

is mandatory. A new provider is being sourced for

2019/2020, information will be sent out when available.

UNIFORMAthletes should bring national team jackets, race suits

and warm-up clothing. Orders for new items of team

uniform will be taken during September.

PROGRAM FEESThe preliminary estimation of athlete expenses for each

5-week training period is $6,000, with an additional

$2,500 for the WJC/U23 Championships. Additional

WYOG expenses are covered by the AOC. A $1,000

deposit is required in September. Some athlete expenses

will be covered by funds raised via the XC Towards 2022

project. The next team fundraising activity is the AUSXC

Season Launch in Melbourne on Friday October 19.

The tour fee includes the following:

and insurance.

WYOG 2020The cross country competitions at the 2020 WYOG take

place in the second week of the games. The Australian

Team will be housed in the Athlete Village in Lausanne,

which is about an hour from the cross country venue.

The WYOG XC team will drive across from Davos to move

into the Athlete Village on January 15. Quota places for

the WYOG are finalised at the start of December. Callum

Watson will provide both coaching and waxing support

throughout the games, with extra support from the AOC.

WJC/U23 2019The WJC/U23 Team will drive up to Oberwiesenthal from

Davos on January 26. Accommodation will be full-board

in a hotel to be allocated by the OC. The support

team is not yet finalised, but the preliminary

plan is for waxing support to be provided

by Valerio Leccardi, Tom McMahon

and Alasdair Tutt. Following the

championship athletes will depart

back to Australia.
