FollowingthesensationalresponsetotheconcertswithMaestroRiccardoMutiearlierthisyear,theAustralianWorldOrchestra(AWO)isthrilledtoannounceyetanothereclecticandbravuraprogramforits2019season,aswellastheformationofAWOSIX,aneliteensembleofAWOallstars.

ReturningtotheArtsCentreMelbourneandperforminginCanberraforthefirsttimenextJuly,AWO’sArtisticDirectorAlexander Briger AO will lead 88 of Australia’s finestmusicians in performances of NigelWestlake’sFlyingDream(fromthefilmPaperPlanes)andLeošJanáček’sTarasBulba,arhapsodybasedonthenovelofthesamenamebyNikolaiGogal,whichtellsthestoryofanoldCossackwhojourneyswithhistwosonstojoinotherCossacksinthebattleagainstPoland.Featuringexquisitesolosandculminatinginaseriesofmassivebrassandorgan cadences, abell crescendoanda triumphantepilogue, this is rousing stuff! Theprogramendswith thegrandeurofSibelius’SymphonyNo.2,describedbythecomposeras“aconfessionofthesoul."

Alexander Briger is one of Australia’s preeminent conductors,having worked withMaestros ZubinMehta, Pierre Boulez and SirCharles Mackerras. Alexander studied in Sydney and Munich,winning various awards, including first prize at the “InternationalCompetitionforConductors”intheCzechRepublicin1993.Helaterworked closely with both Sir Charles Mackerras, where hedeveloped a strong knowledge of themusic of Leoš Janáček, andPierre Boulez and the Ensemble InterContemporain. He haspremieredworksbycomposerssuchasArvoPärt,BrunoMantovani,Mark Anthony Turnage and Simon Holt and combines a variedconcertcareerwithawiderangeofoperaticprojects.

He has performed regularly with the Philharmonia Orchestra inLondonandtheLondonPhilharmonicOrchestra,includingtheirtourtoChinain2004andmadehisBBCPromsandBerlinFestivaldebutswith the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group (following arecommendation from Sir Simon Rattle) and Edinburgh FestivaldebutwiththeScottishChamberOrchestra.

In August 2010 he founded the AustralianWorld Orchestra, of which he is the Artistic Director and in 2011conducted their award-winning inaugural seasonat theSydneyOperaHousewithBeethoven's9thSymphony,which was subsequently released on Deutsche Grammophon, as well as leading the orchestra on a tour ofSydneyandSingaporein2016,andtoIndiain2018.

Alexander’srecentengagementshaveincludedperformancesofStravinsky’sPetrouschkaandShostakovich’s5thSymphonywiththeLondonSymphonyOrchestraattheBarbican,London,Brahms’1stSymphonyandSchubert’s9th Symphony with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra in Tel Aviv and Haifa, Mahler’s 9th Symphony with theAustralian International SymphonyOrchestra Institute, Janáček’sKáťa Kabanováat the ToulonOpera, France,andJohnAdams’IWasLookingattheCeilingandThenISawtheSkywiththeTeatrodell’OperadiRomaandattheThéâtreduChâtelet,Paris, followingahugelysuccessfuldebutatthesametheatre in2012conductingtheParispremiereofAdams'NixoninChina.

DavidBerlinstudiedthecellowithLoisSimpsonattheSydneyConservatoriumandtheJuilliardSchoolofMusicinNewYork,withChanningRobbins.Forover25yearsDavidhasbeenatthe forefront of music performance here in Australia, asPrincipal Cello of both the Adelaide Symphony Orchestrafrom 1985 through to 1988 and the Melbourne SymphonyOrchestrafrom1989.

DavidhasalsomadenumerousappearancesassoloistwiththeseandotherAustralianOrchestrasandhasbeeninvitedtoplayguestPrincipalCellowiththeSydneyandTasmanianSymphonyOrchestras,AustralianChamberOrchestraandtheAustralianWorldOrchestra.

NatalieCheebeganhermusicalcareerattheageoffouronpiano. By age 10 she studied violin with Alex Todicescu,professor at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music andmemberoftheSydneyStringQuartet.

AfterwinningnumerouscompetitionsandprizesinAustralia,ayoungteenageNatalieappearedasasoloistwithalloftheAustralianSymphonyOrchestraswhistshewasinstillinhighschool.In1994NataliewasacceptedintotheSoloistClassofProf. IgorOzim inBerne,Switzerlandwhereshe receivedherSoloistDiploma in1998withHighDistinction.Stillastudent,NataliewasinvitedtobecomeamemberofCamerataBerninthepositionof2ndviolinleader.Duringthistime,shealsoco-foundedthechambermusicensemble‘Tiramisu’andtheMozartPianoQuartet.ShetouredNorthandSouthAmerica,EuropeandAustraliawiththesegroupsandmaderecordingsforprominentlabelsinSwitzerlandandGermany.

In2000,Nataliewonthepositionof1stConcertmasterofCamerataSalzburg–apositionshehelduntil2009.In2009,Nataliebecame1stConcertmasteroftheRadioSymphonyOrchestra inStuttgart.This isthepositionshecurrentlyholds.SheisaregularguestConcertmasteroftheBBCSymphonyOrchestraandwasgiventhehonourofleadingthisorchestrainthe‘LastNightoftheProms’in2014.

AndraDarzinsisProfessorofViolaattheUniversityofMusicandPerformingArtsinStuttgart,Germany.Previously (1993-2004)shewasPrincipalViolaof theHamburgPhilharmonicorchestra.Sheperformsandteachesworldwide.Andra plays as guest Principal Viola in major German orchestras, including theStaatskapelleBerlin,BambergerSymphoniker,RadioSymphonyOrchestraFrankfurt,MunichPhilharmonicandmostrecentlywiththeElbphilharmonieOrchesterplayingconcertsinHamburgandParis.

Andra is an avid chambermusician, and is regularly invited to important festivals, a recent highlightwas theInternationalChamberMusic Festival in Zagreb inOctober2017,performingbothBrahms stringQuintets andSextets. Andra is also often invited as a guest playerwith the EnsembleModern, including tours to Paris andEnglandin2017,andwasrecentlypartofaCDproductionwithEM,featuringmusicofBrianFerneyhough.

Ahighlightof2017wereseveralperformancesofMortonFeldmans“RothkoChapel“, featuringsoloviolawithchoir, togetherwiththeStuttgartVokalensemble, includingaperformance intheauspicesoftheSchwetzingerFestspiele in the thousand year old cathedral in Speyer. Andra recorded thiswork togetherwith this choir in2014, thisCDwasawardedtheprestigiousPrizeof theGermanRecordCritics.Andrahas released6soloCDs,includingrecordingsoftheviolaconcertosbyHoffmeisterandStamitz,indualfunctionassoloistandconductor.Herrecordingshavebeenhighlyacclaimedbycriticsandreceivedprizes.

AndrastudiedattheUniversityofAdelaideandattheUniversityofMusicinBerlinwithWolframChrist.ShewasaChurchillFellowshipandDAADscholarshipholder.Shewonfirstprize inSouthAustralia intheABCConcertoCompetition , the spezialprize “Frederic Liebstoeckl“at theGenevaMusicCompetitionand2ndprize (no firstawarded)attheLionelTertisInternationalViolaCompetition.AndraisartisticdirectoroftheSt.AntoniusAutumnconcertsinStuttgart.Thischambermusicseriescelebratedits11thseasonin2017.

Born inAustralia,Daniel performedhis first concerts attheageoffive.At14yearsofagehelivedwithhisfamilyfor a year in Linz, Austria, where he visited themusicgymnasium. The positivemusical experiences andatmosphere experienced during this year confirmedmusic making as his vocation. At the age of 17 he left

Australia,furnishedwithscholarshipsforSwitzerlandtocommencehisviolinstudieswithGunarsLarsensattheConservatorium of Music in Lucerne and with Keiko Wataya at the Conservatorium of Utrecht. Attaining alldiplomas “with distinction” he received further inspiration inmasterclasses with Rudolf Baumgartner, FrancoGulliandoneofthegrandmastersofthegoldenageofviolinists,NathanMilstein.

Awinnerandprizewinnerofseveralnationalandinternationalcompetitionsinhisyearsasastudent,Danielwasinvited by Rudolf Baumgartner to become a member of the Festival Strings Lucerne, later becoming its first

concertmaster in2001andin2012hewasappointedtheartisticdirectoroftherenownedchamberorchestra,leadingitinconcertsaroundtheglobe.

Asasoloistandchambermusician,TahliaPetrosianhasperformedinWigmoreHall,theSydneyOperaHouse, theSemperoperDresden, theBerlinerPhilharmonie, theGewandhausLeipzig,TanglewoodMusicCenterUSA,anddirectlyon5thAvenueinNewYork.

Before completing her studies with Tabea Zimmermann and Wilfried Strehle inBerlin and attaining the ‘Konzertexamen’ degree, Germany’s highest qualification,Tahlia performed in masterclasses withYuri Bashmet, Thomas Riebl, PaulNeubauer,PinchasZukermanandNobukoImai.

Tahlia has been awarded prizes including an Artist Development Award from the Australia Council and theAustralianMusicFoundationPrize inLondon.ShewasawardedascholarshipfromtheDAADforherstudies inBerlin and she also received awards from the Paul Hindemith Gesellschaft in Berlin and the DameJoanSutherlandFundinNewYork.

HavingperformedasPrincipalViola inorchestras including theLondonPhilharmonicOrchestra, theAustralianOpera and Ballet Orchestra, the Royal Flemish Philharmonic and the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Tahlia joined theGewandhausOrchestraLeipzigin2012.

BeforecommencingformalmusicstudyinBerlin,TahliacompleteddegreesinArtsandLawattheUniversityofNewSouthWales,completingbothdegreestwoyearsearly.ShealsostudiedGermanLawandInternationalLawatHumboldtUniversityBerlinandherworkhasbeenpublishedintheAustralianJournalofInternationalLaw.

In2016,Tahliacreatedtheseries‘KlassikUnderground’,workingwithartistsincludingJoshuaBell,Anne-SophieMutterandJean-YvesThibaudettopresentclassicalmusicinaninnovativeformat.In 2017, Tahlia was a speaker at the Karajan Conference at the Salzburg Festival and also at the ARTS +Conference inFrankfurt. Inadditiontoperforming,Tahliaworkswith leadingorchestrasworldwidetodevelopandimplementnewconcertseriesandformats.

Hailing from Canberra, Julian is one of the most versatile cellists of hisgeneration.Forthelast14yearsJulianhastouredAustraliaandtheworldwiththe Australian Chamber Orchestra (ACO), regularly performing in the world’smost prestigious concert halls and he appears on many of the ACO’srecordings. Julian is in much demand as a recording artist and his solo celloperformancescanbeheardinfilmssuchasSherpa(2015),Tanna(2015),MiracleonEverest(2008),andtheSydneyDanceCompanyproductionsab[intra](2018)and2 One Another(2012). Most recently Julian recorded all of the solo celloYidakipartson thegroundbreakingGurrumulalbumDjarimirri,whichwas thefirstrecording inan indigenous languagetoreachNo.1ontheAriachartsandalsowontheBestWorldMusicAlbumARIA.In1999JulianwontheBestWorldMusicAlbumARIAforthealbumFyvie’sEmbrace.

JulianisaFulbrightScholarandcompletedaMasterofMusicDegreeintheUSAwithJanosStarkerandTsuyoshiTsutsumi.HealsostudiedattheAustralianNationalUniversitywithLoisSimpsonandDavidPereiraandattheAustralianNationalAcademyofMusic.AstheACO’sEducationRepresentativeJulianhasbeendeeplyinvolvedinthecreationanddevelopmentof theACO’sextensiveeducationprograms. JulianalsoperformsregularlywiththeAustralianWorldOrchestra,theSydneySymphonyOrchestraandhasappearedassoloistwiththeCanberraSymphonyOrchestraandtheAdelaideSymphonyOrchestra.

Julianiscurrentlythecustodianofabeautiful1729Guarnericello,generouslygiftedtotheACObyPeterWeissAO.

AWO2019ACADEMYPLAYER

SergioInsuastiViolaSergioInsuastiisaViolistbasedinSydney,currentlyinpreparationforpostgraduatestudyinEurope.

Since theageof14, Sergiohas studiedViolaunder the tutelageofAlexTodicescu,RogerBenedictandJustinWilliams.PriortostudyingattheSydneyConservatoriumof Music, Sergio gained orchestral experience at a young age, being selected asPrincipalViolaoftheSBSYouthOrchestraattheageof15.

Thisexperiencecontinuedthroughlargermusicprogrammes,performingasPrincipalViolaforPenrithSymphonyOrchestra,SydneyYouthOrchestraandAustralianYouthOrchestraprograms.

This year marks his fifth year as Principal Viola in The Sydney Youth Orchestra, under the baton of ChiefConductorAlexanderBriger,performingcountlessworkssuchasBruckner’s8thSymphony,Stravinsky’sFirebirdSuiteandBrahms’4thSymphony.

SergiohasattendedmasterclassesandworkshopswithrenownedviolistssuchasTobiasLea,WilliamColeman,Mark Tukh and Caroline Henbest. Sergio was also a participant in last year’s International Viola Congress inWellington,whereheperformedforEliasGoldsteinandFelixUngar.
