INTRODUCTION

The aim in compiling these indices was to collect material considered relevant to history of the veterinary profession in Australia and about Australian veterinarians. For the most part they do not cover matters relating to diseases, administration, science and research; neither do they cover organisations such as the AVA, College of Veterinary Scientists, veterinary surgeons boards, government departments, universities. Such organisations might be expected to have their own archives and histories. The borderline between these two broad areas was often difficult to define so overlap has very likely occurred with some articles being omitted and other incorrectly included. Inevitably there will be errors and omissions in these indices and the compiler would appreciate receiving information about them.

PJ Mylrea As the current Honorary Editor of AVHR, the American Association of Avian Pathologists had a definition of ‘A historical manuscript is not a typical review. It covers older information, usually from the beginning to a convenient point about 20 years prior to the date of writing. In addition to providing a chronicle of the significant scientific accomplishments, it gives prominence to the persons and circumstances involved in important events and anecdotes that reveal insight to the personalities of key persons. It typically provides as many dates and places as possible, to increase its value to historians. It may provide linkages to other contemporary events of the day, when appropriate. It does not contain abundant citations, but good review articles in the field can be identified. The principal questions to be addressed are what events were significant (identify when and where) and what forces shaped the course of these events. What people were involved and how did they contribute. The finished product ideally is easy to read and interesting to a broad audience.’ This definition I believe provides more clarity to what constitutes a historical article and was applied from November 1996.

THE AUSTRALASIAN VETERINARY JOURNAL [1882]

Only one volume of this journal was published and that was in 1882. Pullar described it in Victorian Veterinary Proceedings 1969-70, pp 12-13.

A copy is in the Rare Books Collection in the Latrobe Library,

State Library of Victoria (Jan 1993). Pullar stated that the

l i b r a r y of the Veterinary Research Institute, Melbourne, held a

photocopy and the Mitchell Library, Sydney, held an original

copy. Beardwood (Aust Vet J 1971, v47, p74) stated that another

copy was in the AVA Archives.

The volume contains numerous advertisements.

announces its publication. Probably what was the same,

or similar, list was published in 'The Veterinarian'

This journal was edited by WAN Robertson who wrote ‘[it] ran for

twelve months only as nearly all the contributors had gone to the

South African War.' It was described by Pullar 1969-70 in Vic Vet

Proceedings p12. The only original copy known to the present

compiler is volume 1 number 2. This is in the Historical Collection

of the Australian Veterinary History Society in Melbourne

University Veterinary School Library. The following are relevant

articles:

Progress of the veterinary profession in Australia p 33

News and notes pp 49-51

Notes from South Australia p 51

The issue also contains an informative advertisement for WT

Kendall's Melbourne Veterinary College.

AVA NEWSLETTER / AVJ NEWS / AVA NEWS (1977 to 1995) The first 'AVA Newsletter' was published on 23 February 1977 and was then issued each 2 weeks. This system continued until 30 June 1982. From July 1982 the name was changed to 'AVA News'. It continued to be published fortnightly but each alternate issue was published along with the AVJ and referred to as 'AVJ [month, year] -AVA News'. This distinction was used in indexing to identify specific issues. This continued till the end of 1990. From 1991 it reverted to 'AVA News' issued fortnightly and independently of the AVJ. In 1992 it changed to a monthly publication with 12 issues a year. This continued until July 1996 when the News was combined with the AVJ and given separate page numbering.
