Welcome

“Look up at the stars and not down at your feet. Try to make sense of what you see, and wonder about what makes the universe exist. Be curious.” - Stephen Hawking

Now in its 17th year, the Australian Museum’s Science Festival celebration has been a leader in showcasing the wondrous world of science - where we welcome primary school students and teachers to explore practical discoveries as well as studies that can benefit us all.

With the support of a wide range of researchers and professionals from tertiary institutions, scientific organisations and industry sponsors, the program includes a wealth of high-quality educational activities and presentations designed to encourage and stimulate interest in the study of science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics – STEAM.

We thank our Major Partner 3M Australia and Event Partner ANSTO; our Education Partners Macquarie University, University of New South Wales, University of Sydney and University of Technology Sydney.

Additionally, we are grateful to our wonderful volunteers and the Science Engagement and Events team who’ve worked so hard to develop and deliver this comprehensive program for 2018.

This year, we are again co-producing the Sydney Science Festival with the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences (MAAS) to join the National Science Week celebrations focussed on the innovations and achievements of the Australian scientific community.

And we thank you, the teachers whose enduring passion for supporting your students to be inspired and aspire to, assembling the next generation of adventurous explorers who will look to shaping a better world.

Secrets of the Earth

Piece together some palaeontological puzzles! With the help of AMRI researcher Jackie Nguyen, find out how fossils are formed and learn about different types of fossils. Discover what fossils can tell us about the lives of dinosaurs and megafauna and their evolutionary relationships with today’s animals.

Presenter: Australian Museum Research Institute

Wildlife DNA

The Australian Museum has collectors, researchers... and crime fighters!? Meet the superhero scientists who fight crime from the lab. Learn how to extract DNA from a strawberry with staff from the internationally acclaimed Australian Centre for Wildlife Genomics. Discover how they use similar methods of DNA extraction to help identify vulnerable and endangered animal species, and fight illegal wildlife smuggling!

Unbelievabubbles

Bubbles have a secret identity! You may know them as colourful floating shapes of joy….but in reality, bubbles are a complex chemical sandwich of waring layers of water-loving and water-hating molecules. Join us in a most serious playful exploration of the true nature of soap bubbles (they are lazy!). With your own bubble mixture, you can design experiments to help answer more of the mysteries of bubbles and their relevance to solving science and engineering challenges. We will also have time to attempt some really clever bubble tricks - but only after you’ve learnt to tame the bubble.

Water Works

Water is one of most exciting materials on the planet! Water covers over 70% of the Earth’s surface. Water is essential for life. Water can be a liquid, a solid and a gas - in the same room in which you sit. Join us in some seriously playful investigations about water, and design your own experiments to help answer your own questions. You might like to explore how water ‘sticks’ to glass, or how to make water ‘wetter’ or create ways for water to flow up-hill. What new ideas about water will your learn?

Wildlife Forensics CSI

In this workshop, students undertake exciting crime scene investigation activities using authentic materials to unlock the mysteries of a prickly assault in a Wildlife Forensics case. From fingerprints to DNA, students will retrieve and analyse evidence to understand more about forensics and genomics. So come ‘suit and boot’ and help solve the mystery!

Wind Things

Did you know that scientists are still arguing about why wings keep planes flying?? It’s true! The way air moves around objects, like a wing, is very complex and has all sorts of effects which are not easily explained….but lots of fun to explore! Join us in playful exploration of the science of flight by constructing a small wing, a whirligig toy and a paper model plane. Experiment with these devices by predicting how they’ll behave if you change the speed of flowing air, or the weight or shape of your device. What will you learn from your experiments that help you better understand how planes fly?
