AUSTRALIAN ISLAMIC COLLEGE THORNLIE

Message from the Executive Principal

Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmutallahi wa Barakatuhu

Dear parents and our school community members,

The mission of our College is to provide a high quality

academic program in a dynamic Islamic environment. We

work alongside the students and parents and examine

our pedagogy in light of the needs of our students.

Combined with our collegial nature, enthusiasm and

dedication, we are putting all our efforts to provide

students with quality learning experiences and excellence

in education.

Additionally, we provide our students with a rich co-

curricular program including Islamic quizzes and many

other competitions. Our aim is to prepare our students to

succeed as lifelong learners who are constructive

members of the Australian society whilst still proud of

their Islamic heritage and identity.

We aim to set high standards at the College. We are

doing everything possible to prepare our students

academically and intellectually for their future lives. We

are establishing a strong partnership between the school,

home and community and this partnership has worked

extremely well in educating the children.

I am sure you have seen our 2018 WACE (Year 12)

results for Kewdale campus by now. AIC stands TALL

amongst the top 30 schools in WA with our DUX’s perfect

ATAR of 99.95, Alhamdulillah. AIC School Mean ATAR is

84.85 while WA State Median ATAR is 81.80. Sixty three

percent (63%) of AIC ATAR students have achieved 90+

ATAR while 88% of AIC ATAR students received 80+

ATAR with bonus points. One student received a

Certificate of Excellence in Math’s Methods, Math’s

Specialist, Physics and Chemistry; 3 students received

Certificates of Distinction; 7 students received Certificates

of Merit from Schools Curriculum and Standards Authority

(SCSA). Fifty-seven students received offers with their

first preferences, while 73 students received offers from

any of their preferences at Curtin, ECU, Murdoch and

UWA, Alhamdulillah.

Religious development is also essential to complete the

learning process of not only the child but any person in

general. We teach students Arabic, Quran and Islamic

Studies in order to facilitate their religious development.

Receiving this Islamic education will prepare students for

all events in their lives because they can find the answers

to all their questions in the Quran and teachings (Hadith)

of the Prophet Mohammad (pbuh).

Students at AIC are valued as individuals who have a

right to academic, emotional, social, physical and spiritual

nourishment.

I am more than certain that with the help of Allah (SWT)

and your continued support, we shall be able to take our

College to the next phase of development. I shall

continue to work with you for the best interests of our

beloved children and our community at large, Insha’Allah.

AUSTRALIAN ISLAMIC COLLEGE THORNLIE

Principal’s Message Assalamu Alaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh,

Dear parents, students, staff members, the college

management and all members of the community at large.

I praise Allah (Swt) as He is the only and absolute One

worthy of Praise. Peace and Blessings be to the Beloved

Prophet Muhammad (Saw), his family and his

companions.

I would like to warmly welcome you all to look back at

the 2018 year.

Thanks to Allah (Swt), the Most Kind and the Most

Merciful for all His blessings that He showers upon us,

Alhamdulillah.

In 2018 we were blessed with a significant number of

new enrolments in all year levels. Alhamdulillah, we

opened new classes with new teachers: In Years 1, 2 and

2.

We warmly welcomed our new students and their families

into our school community and conveyed our heartfelt

thanks for choosing our school for your children. As for

the existing students and their families, we conveyed our

sincere thanks for continuing to trust us in educating their

children.

We pledge to continue our tireless efforts and absolute

hard work in providing high quality education and a most

effective teaching and learning environment, programs

and activities that activate our children’s curiosity and

nourish their desire to seek for knowledge. Our focus is to

provide a stimulating learning environment for our

students where they feel completely motivated to achieve

their very best.

The College’s warm and welcoming atmosphere ensures

that students feel valued as individuals. All of our

students are given an enriched learning experience to

develop as unique learners.

We faced so many challenges in 2018 and with our hard

work, persistence and determination we gained much

success in numerous aspects of school life. Alhamdulillah,

throughout the year, we were able to demonstrate

achievement in many areas. Some of our achievements

are listed below:

Our fantastic 2018 Naplan results were evidence of

some of those successes.

Our students received ICAS Certificates - Merits,

Credits, Distinctions and High Distinctions in the areas

of Digital Technologies, English, Writing, Spelling,

Mathematics and Science.

Successful Student Exchange Program and Interfaith

Program.

Purchase of STEM resources with the wonderful

support and contribution of our Fantastic P&F. I am

truly grateful for their support.

Classroom renovation and other school upgrades to

maintain and continue to improve the physical

appearance of our school.

We were very busy with numerous and meaningful school

activities. We continued with our project-based learning

in the form of STEM projects and the integration of

Design and Digital technologies across the curriculum.

One of our most valuable resources are our outstanding

teachers. Our teachers are extremely committed and

dedicated. They work in collaboration with each other to

form a very strong Professional Learning Team. Our

experienced and vibrant teachers provide students with a

superlative education. I thank Allah (Swt) for blessing us

with our wonderful teachers.

AIC Thornlie is very attractive in appearance, with

beautiful landscaping and art work.

With only the very best for our children in mind,

classrooms are equipped with an abundance of teaching

and learning resources that are updated with current

technologies. Such resources include educational books,

Math’s equipment, STEM resources and an Interactive

White Board in every classroom. Students also have

access to laptop computers, iPads and a first-class school

library. The Accelerated Program is run in the library

encourages students to develop their love of reading and

improve their literacy skills.

Teaching and learning is underpinned by our Islamic

morals and values. Both academic and Islamic values are

inter-related as we strive for excellence in both areas.

Another special feature that was integrated into our

programs is Islamic Heritage. Our students need to be

exposed to our Islamic Heritage. With the knowledge and

awareness of their Heritage, we expect them to be

confident and proud of their identity as Muslims in a

diverse Australian community.

Our school strives for ‘academic excellence and success in

this life and the hereafter.’ We combine and integrate high

scholastic standards with spiritual nurturing to enable our

students from diverse communities and cultural

backgrounds to establish their identities as Australians

within a democratic society and to develop the knowledge,

skills and values necessary to empower them to participate

and contribute as good and active citizens. Harmonious

relations and trust between school and home, specifically

parents, teachers and management, are essential and the

key to success. Therefore, parent support is very much

acknowledged and appreciated. We have only the very

best for our children in mind and value our strong

partnership between teachers and parents. With the help

of Allah Swt, our children will achieve success both in this

world and the hereafter.

Ameen!

Prophet Muhammad (Peace and Blessings Be upon Him)

said, “He who does not thank people, does not thank

Allah.” I would like to take this opportunity to once again

thank our parents for their wonderful support. I would also

like to thank Thornlie P&F and parent helpers for their

suggestions and thoughtful input, their wonderful support

and valuable contribution throughout the year. Finally, I

thank our upper management for their guidance and

wisdom.

Kindest Regards

School progress towards its goals in 2018 PART 3

Short and Long Term Goals and our Improvement

Agenda

Based upon our data derived from NAPLAN, On Entry

Assessment, ACER Diagnostic assessments along with the

advice and guidance from the National Partnership, ACER

Review panel and other professional staff, we put in place

our school Improvement Agenda. The Operational

Strategic Plan has been developed and implemented to

reach our College – short and long term.

Within our Improvement Agenda was the implementation

of explicit teaching, school-wide pedagogy, differentiated

instructions, guided reading, reading fluency, Oxford-Word

List, Fry’s List, Math fluency and problem solving strategies

to improve the literacy and numeracy skills of our students.

Numerous books, fiction and non-fiction, and Math’s

equipment were purchased for all year levels.

Diagnostic Testing: ACER, NAPLAN, On Entry

Assessments Diagnostic tests were administered to identify

strengths and areas for improvement. ACER diagnostic

tests were administered in term 1 for Years 1-9 to

determine each students’ level at the beginning of the year

and in term 4 to see the progress gained in a school year.

NAPLAN was held at the beginning of Term 2 for Years 3,

5, 7 and 9. Areas that were assessed include: Reading,

Writing, Spelling, Language and Conventions and

Numeracy. Enrichment classes were conducted in

preparation for NAPLAN.

On Entry Assessments were administered for Pre-Primary

students at the beginning of the year.

With the data derived from ACER, we had a valid and

sound comparison with NAPLAN results.

ESL Trained Teachers

Majority of our students come from ESL backgrounds.

Teachers were trained to equip them with skills and

knowledge on how to teach ESL students in mainstream

classrooms. This is a way to make sure that the needs of

our ESL students are met.

Professional Learning Team

We have a strong Professional Learning Team where

teachers are engaged consistently in professional dialogue,

sharing ideas and working in strong collaboration with each

other. Teachers within the same year level met once a

week during their common DOTT (Duty Other Than

Teaching) to discuss program, ideas, planning and other

matters related to students’ progress and wellbeing.

Staff Appraisal

Staff Appraisal was conducted once per term based on

AITSL standard.

Mentoring System and Performance Management

We have a mentoring system through Performance

Management platform in Office 365 to ensure teachers’

professional growth and to build teachers’ professional

capacity. The Performance Management goals in 2018

were Design Technologies and Digital Technologies. In

previous years the goals were Differentiated Instructions,

Literacy Integration, ICT Integration and Project Based

Learning (STEM).

Behaviour Management System

Our Behaviour Management System is based on Islamic

moral values. Positive reinforcement was emphasized.

Students were taught how to self-reflect. We had a

dedicated behaviour management team.

Project-Based Learning

2018 was a very busy year full of very engaging and fun

activities. Among those activities was our project-based

learning in the form of STEM projects and the integration

of design and technologies into numerous learning areas.

Students were engaged in planning, designing, choosing

the right materials, creating, testing, evaluating and

improving their project. We held a STEM exhibition at our

school for a day and we were very impressed and proud

of our students’ work. With the help of our P&F, we

managed to purchase some STEM resources for our

students. Fundraising was also organized to collect funds

to continue with purchasing more STEM resources.

You Can Do It Program

Attention to students’ physical, social, emotional and

spiritual wellbeing was emphasized. Five keys to success

(Organisation, Persistence, Confidence, Resilience, Get

Along) were taught through the “You Can Do It” along with

Protective Behaviour as part of our Health Program.

Excursions and Incursions:

The school participated in numerous excursions /

incursions in order to boost our students’ learning

experiences and to give them ample opportunities to

interact and integrate with the wider community.
