    Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency (AHPRA) is the organisationresponsible for: Supporting the National Board in their primary role of protecting thepublic. t also publishes national registers of practitioners so important information aboutthe registration of indi!idual health practitioners is a!ailable to the public. AHPRA alsomanages the registration and rene"al processes for health practitioners and students

    *ental Board of Australia is responsible for :Registering dentists% students% dental specialists% dental therapists% dental hygienists%oral health therapists and dental prosthetists. t also de!elops standards% codes andguidelines for the dental profession. *ental Board of Australia also handles notifications%complaints% in!estigations and disciplinary hearings. t also in!ol!es in assessingo!erseas trained practitioners "ho "ish to practise in Australia and appro!ingaccreditation standards and accredited courses of study

    Registration Standards: Registration standards define the re+uirements that applicants%registrants or students need to meet to be registered. ,his standard applies to allapplicants and all registered practitioners.-. A dental practitioner must not direct another registered practitioner to underta#edental procedures or gi!e ad!ice outside that persons education or competence./. *ental practitioners must only perform those dentalprocedures: a) for "hich they ha!e been formally educated and trained in programs of studyappro!ed by the Board0 and b) in "hich they are competent.1. *entists "or# as independent practitioner "ho may practise all parts of dentistry andare the clinical team leaders. *entists may supply and fit dental appliances for thetreatment of sleep disorders. ,hey must "or# in cooperation "ith the patients medicalpractitioner "ho is responsible for the medical aspects of the management of sleepdisordered breathing.2. *ental prosthetists "or# as independent practitioners in ma#ing% fitting% supplying andrepairing remo!able dentures and fle&ible% remo!able mouthguards.3. *ental hygienists% dental therapists and oral health therapists e&ercise autonomousdecision ma#ing in those areas in "hich they ha!e been formally educated and trained.

    ,hey may only practice "ithin a structured professional relationship "ith a dentist. ,heymust not practise as independent practitioners. ,hey may practise in a range ofen!ironments that are not limited to direct super!ision.

    4ach National Board has a registration standard detailing the re+uirements and

    ,he *ental Board of Australia has de!eloped policies% codes and guidelines to pro!ideguidance to the profession. ,hese also help to clarify our !ie"s and e&pectations on arange of issues.

    A comprehensi!e infection control manual "hich is pertinent to the daily routines of thepractice must be de!eloped. t must describe the infection control procedures for thepractice as a "hole and be used as the foundation for training dental staff. All staff inthe practice need to #no" "ho is responsible for ensuring certain acti!ities are carriedout and to "hom to report any accidents or incidents. Ne" clinical dental staff shouldcomplete an induction program. ,his pre6ser!ice training should include the practical

    implementation of occupational health and safety and infection control measures usedin the practice.

    'hy did the Board de!elop a broad Scope of Practice RegistrationStandard7,here "as a lot of !ariation amongst State and ,erritories regarding ho" 8scope ofpractice for dental practitioners "as regulated. ,herefore the Board set a broad scopeof practice re+uirement. ,he Board e&pects that dental practitioners "ill use soundprofessional 9udgment "hen it comes to assessing their o"n% and other colleagues%scope of practice and "or# "ithin their education% training and competence.

    'hat are the super!ision re+uirements of the Boards Scope of PracticeRegistration Standard7,he term super!ision in the Standard is defined as o!ersight% direction% guidance andorsupport0 "hich is a broad and fle&ible definition and does not re+uire the personpro!iding the super!ision to be physically on site. ;or oral health therapists% dentaltherapists and dental hygienists the super!ision re+uirements could be met throughensuring that a structured professional relationship e&ists "ith a dentist "ho could beconsulted as necessary !ia any means.

    *uring an in!estigation of a complaint% the dental practitioner may be as#ed to

    pro!ide e!idence of the P* acti!ities that ha!e been underta#en. ;rom time to time% the Board may conduct audits of P* compliance. f an audit

    result is unsatisfactory% the Board may impose conditions on the dentalpractitioners registration.
