Dear Members How different the month of November in Melbourne is from November in Germany. In Germany the short, dark days start. It might rain a lot and occasionally you might already experience really cold days. This situation is underlined by the public holidays like All Saints or Dead Sunday, the Sunday before the first of Advent. How different is November here in Melbourne! Spring is in full swing, the days get sunnier and longer, flowers bloom everywhere. People look forward to celebrating Cup Day and other events. Winter is definitely over! Church holidays are not celebrated as much as perhaps in former times, except for the 11th Nov. the Remembrance Day of war casualties. At the Welfare preparations for the upcoming Christkindl Market are in full swing. It will take place on Thursday, the 30th November in the Lower Town Hall in Melbourne, Swanston Street, between 9.30am and 3pm. We urgently need volunteers who can help with preparing the market, closing it down at the end of the day or selling goods and food. Please, let the office know if you would like to help. As in other years, the Christkindl Market will also be a meeting place for Germans here in Melbourne. They can enjoy a meal of fried sausage or meatloaf with potato salad, or coffee and cake. One might also find one or the other Christmas gift or some of the famous German cookies and other goodies. We are looking forward to meeting you there. Please come and bring many friends along. If you are interested to have your own stall at the market, please contact the office.

On the 14th December we will have our Christmas celebration in Club Tivoli. More about that event in our next Newsletter but keep the date in your diary. But before that we have scheduled a German film afternoon with coffee and cake at our offices in Albert Road. On the 16th of

November at 1.30pm we’ll meet for a leisurely afternoon watching a movie and enjoying a cuppa. Please let the office know if you are planning to attend. Enjoy the lovely spring time after a long and cold winter. Best regards from Linde Mohr

Vanilla –soon perhaps the most expensive spice in the world We all know Vanilla. It is not only used for the production of ice cream, pudding and cakes, biscuits and yoghurt, sweets and similar products, but also as an aroma ingredient for body lotion, shampoo bath salt, air freshener, soap and similar things. Why is it so expensive and where does it actually come from? Madagascar is the largest growing region for Vanilla in the world. At this time of the year, harvest is in full swing and the world price for Vanilla is exploding. It could soon become the most expensive spice in the world; for years this price knows only one direction- to go up. Why is that so? Georges Geeraets has bad news for all Vanilla fans: A storm in spring this year has destroyed vast growing areas of Vanilla and further difficulties are coming up. The biggest problem is that the raw vanilla is harvested too early. ‘Because of fear of theft, some farmers have started to harvest Vanilla pods as early as March, but the real flowering starts only in June’, says Rado Andrianantenaina, producer and exporter from Antalaha in the north east of the island. With such high prices, other countries like India or even Uganda may start growing Vanilla orchids and this higher production could

AGWS Newsletter No. 546 November 2017 4

bring down the price. But this will take time as the growing and cultivating of these climbing orchids takes (under ideal circumstances) up to four years before Vanilla pods could be harvested. These long beans contain just 2% valuable aroma oil. Also the heavily involved producer of aromas and fragrances from Madagascar, Symrise in Lower Saxony, does not think the price will fall in the near future. This concern in Holzminden is one of about two dozen producers who use Vanilla from the island. About 700 Vanilla farmers in Madagascar work together with Symrise –in conjunction with GIZ and other aid organisations to develop programs which use about 10 per cent of Vanilla produced in Madagascar. ‘There is still enough quantity and quality of the Vanilla available to us’, says Symrise CEO Heinrich Schaper. The higher price will not stop customers from buying Vanilla: last year between 1800 and 2000 tons of cultivated Vanilla were exported. The artificially produced flavouring Vanilla will not replace the real Vanilla in the near future. Linde Mohr

How I have come to know the AGWS I have been asked to write how and when I first learned of the existence of the German Welfare Society. That happened at the outing to the Royal Cranbourne Botanic Gardens with the members of the Society. It was a perfect day though a bit windy. It is a very unusual Botanic Garden and world renowned among botanists. We met for lunch in the café and enjoyed the healthy meals on offer. Because our group was small we could all take part in the conversation, lots of photos were taken. One will surely end up in the next Newsletter. And so Mrs Linde Mohr broached the subject of: How and when were you first aware of the existence of the German Welfare Society? And: Maria, why don’t you start and write about your experience? I’ll try. It was early in 1998 when I came to live in Melbourne. Before that I lived in Ballarat, Torquay, and during the 1990s back in Germany. So there I was in Melbourne, correctly in Frankston, and did not know a soul besides my children. Naturally I looked for contact. Internet was in its infancy and I didn’t have a PC, so I looked through the printed media, especially the ‘Standard’ which was distributed throughout Melbourne and I found the German Club Tivoli. There was a German group meeting monthly for lunch. Through this group, of which only my dear friend Matilde Kempken is left, I found out of the existence of the German Welfare Society. I don’t attend their premises often enough because of the long travelling time from Frankston, but enjoy especially the annual book sales and the very interesting outings they offer. I also look forward to the monthly newsletter. Hopefully it will go strong for many more years to come! Maria Debes
