DETERMINATION NO. 48 OF 1993
Under section 4 of the Public Place Names Act 1989, the detennination of the names of the public places mat are Territory Land are described in the attached Schedule 'A' and are as indicated on the attached map.

NAME ORIGIN SIGNIFICANCE
NORTHAM STREET Sir William Herbert Northam (1905-1988)
Australia's first Olympic Yachting Gold Medallist in Tokyo 1964. He was the oldest Australian competitor to win an Olympic gold medal, and was named Australian Yachtsman of the year in 1964.
WESTBURY CIRCUIT Alan Westbury (1916-1968)
ANGLES COURT Cyril Angles (1906-1962)
Australian Welterweight and Middle Weight Champion. He won his first title (welterweight) in 1939. In 1945 he won the Middleweight crown. He retired in -1946 with a proud record of having lost only 21 fights in 107.
Radio Sportscaster. He was one of Australia's all round sportscasters, broadcasting horse racing, boxing, wrestling, trotting, cycling with equal skill.

NAME ORIGIN
KAY PLACE Robert Kay (1915-1991)
SIGNIFICANCE
A prominent local businessman, he was born at Duntroon and served in the RAAF during WWII. He excelled at football and cricket and at one time he attained A-grade status in all four football codes. He played over 100 first grade games with the Tigers and was named among the best players in their premiership-winning years 1939, 40 and 41. He played A -grade cricket for Queanbeyan for nine years and was team captain for five years. In later life he was heavily involved in local sport as an administrator. He also organised the Red Shield Appeal for two very successful years.

JUST PLACE Carl Just (1871-1920)
SIGNIFICANCE
He was president of the Queensland Cycle Club, vice president of the Queensland Flying. Squadron, a member of the Queensland Boxing Association and of the Queensland Amateur Athletic Association.
GEHRS CLOSE Donald Gehrs (1880-1953)
He was an audacious right handed batsman who was effective against any type of bowler. He represented Australia in six Test matches and .during his first class career (1902-21) he scored 4,377 runs, including 13 centuries.

BLACKLOCK CLOSE Walter Blacklock (1862-1935)
HATTERSLEY COURT Harry Hattersley (1908-1970)
SIGNIFICANCE
Trainer. He was a leading jockey on a circuit that extended from Brisbane to Charters Towers and Townsville. Increasing wieght reduced his opportunities and he turned to training in 1891. For 20 years he was among the leading trainers in Brisbane and owners liberally commissioned him to buy yearlings. He retired in 1924.
Between 1925-48 he was one of Australia's leading amateur golfers. He won the 1930 and 1947 Australian Amateur Championships, three NSW amateur titles and four Australian Amateur foursomes Championships.

John Gorman (1901-1978)

SIGNIFICANCE
He played Rugby League for Queensland from 1920-30 and was largely responsible for his states great success. During that period they won 17 out of 24 interstate encounters. He played for Australia in ten consecutive tests against England and captained Australia from 1928-30.
He is considered one of the greatest steeplechasers Australia ever produced.. He won the Oaklands Hunt Club Cup - the V.R.C. Grand.: National Steeplechase in 1894 and 95 and the Caulfield Grand National Steeplechase in 1895. He trained and rode some of the greatest hurdle horses of his day, including Clare Land, Robin Hood, Donald, Clen Isle, Domino and Ripon.

TAZEWELL CIRCUIT Evelyn Ruth Tazewell (1893-1983)
LUKEY PLACE Len Lukey (1923-1978)
SIGNIFICANCE
Hockey. In 1918 she captained South Australia's team against West
. Australia, and remained captain from 1920-36. She was selected in the Australian Team in 1925. 1928. 1929 and in 1930-36. In 1930 the team entered the Empire Tournament in South Africa and toured Britain and Europe. She was Delegate to the International Women's Hockey Association from 1953-59.
Racing Driver. Remembered for a number of notable firsts in Australian Motor Sports. The first driver to win the CAMS Gold Star in 1959. He also set a national land speed record in a non-racing car.

SIGNIFICANCE
Chess Champion. Unofficial Chess Champion South Australia 1865-96; Champion of Australia 1887-95. Chess Editor for the 'Observer' (Adelaide) 1868-1916 and several other publications.
A left-arm slow bowler, he played an important part in beating England at Melbourne in 1876-77. After playing for Victoria for some years he moved to Hobart and toured New Zealand with a Tasmanian side 1883-84.
A medium pace right arm bowler, he represented Australia in the first and second Tests, at Adelaide and Sydney, against the West Indies in 1930-31.

BIDDELL COURT Walter Biddell (1859-1933)
SIGNIFICANCE
Jockey. He began riding at the age of 14, when he joined T: Payten's stabiles. He was Champion New South Wales Jockey 1901-02.
He was the Founder of the Life Saving movement in New South Wales. After a man nearly drowned at Bronte in 1907 he formed the Bronte Surf Life Brigade, the first club to initiate regular drill, discipline and practice. He purchased a surf life boat and organised look-outs and shark bells. He financed the building of a wbmens dressing shed at Bronte and was life governor of the Royal Life Saving Society from 1909.
