KIKE SHOW IS HIT IIHIWIIIA strong show that brought enthusiastic re-sponse from the public and reviewers was broughtto Hawaii by Paul Kaye for his 1975 tour here. The show, billed as the International 3-RingCircus, played at Honolulu on Aug. 7-17, and atHilo on Aug. 20-24.

The program featured a revival of the leaps ov-er elephants by the Canestrelli family, and hadSergio Ramos completing the triple somersaultat almost every performance. ProblemsU.S. rules and regulations

and especially those concerningthe animal control laws, have afar-reaching effect. The problembeing faced here in the statesis also one that foreign zoosand animal breeders must face.

Recently, Robert Baudy, president of the Animal Centerin Florida, had hopes of obtain-ing a pair of leopards, for lo-cal breeding purposes, from theFrankfurt, Germany zoo.

Answering Baudy's cablethe zoo's director Dr. R. Faustsaid he really didn't like deal-ing with u.s. buyers because ofthe immense amount of red tapethat is involved. He quoted onetransaction that took a year tocomplete the paper work and ob-tain a license for shipment ofthe animals.

Long delays cause problemsaccording to Dr. Faust, becauseof the time involved, limitedspace facilities for animals andin regards to future breedingprograms.

As a result, he added,"weare not in a position to do bus-iness transactions with the U.S.unless it is guaranteed that theimport license will be issuedwithin a reasonable period oftime."

Import Center NamedStewart Airport near Newburgh, N.Y., has been selected as

the site for a new animal import center for the U.S., accordingto an announcement made by the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture (USDA)and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) of the Stateof New York.

The new animal import center, to be operated by the USDA'sAnimal and Plant Health Inspection (APHIS), will repleace the fa-cility at Clifton, N.J., which has been in operation since 1903.APHIS officials report the Clifton facility has become too smallto handle the increase volume of animal imports into the U.S.

APHIS plans to build a$5.4 million facility on the 74acre site at Stewart Airport tohandle yearly imports of some1,800 cattle, 800 horses, 300zoo animals and 4,000 poultry —more than triple the currentcapacity at Stewart. APHIs alsooperates small import centers atMiami and Honolulu.

"This new animal importcenter at Stewart Airport willhave a direct effect upon con-sumers from two standpoints, inaddition to the obvious benefitsto American agriculture," saysDr. Mulhern, APHIS adininistratoi

"First it will enable usto safely bring into the U. S.more new breeding animals - andthus increase the volume and ef-ficiency of meat production."

"Second, the new facilitywill enable our zoological parksto acquire more exotic animals, many of which can be bred incaptivity. This will make itpossible for more Americans to

Animals TakenAuthorities at Riverside

(Calif.) have impounded 29 exo-tic animals including lions, ti-gers, leopards, jaguars, a bear, monkeys, eagle and two rabbitts.Their action followed complaintsthat the animals were starvingand that their owner, John Wein-hart, had not been seen sinceJuly 6th.

Doyle Brawley, RiversideCounty Animal Control Officer, reported the animals were foundin dirty cages, which were toosmall. The animals were thirstyand hungry, he added, althoughWeinhart apparently had madeplans for someone to care forthe animals.

Wallace & Rogers were the first show to play in the North-west Territories, where they showed at Pine Point, Fort Providence,Yellowknife and Hay River. It took some mighty long jumps to keepthe schedule, but they managed and drew good business too.

About 20 miles south of Rae, the bull truck, driven by RayHartzell, ran out of gas. Finally some Indian youths were flaggeddown and Ray's plea for gas was greeted with great enthusiasmwhen they learned the truck contained an elephant^

Some 40 minutes later anincreasing cloud of dust on thehorizon heralded about 20 carsand many passengers, all eagerto see the Portland, Oregon bornPachyderm.

Later, after arriving inRae and gassing up to capacity,Ray asked for his bill and wastold "forget about that, but howabout getting the elephant outso we can all see it?"

During the show's four dayfull capacity, stand at Yellow-knife, the city fathers of Raepleaded with the Hartzell familyto bring the circus into theircity. As a result the show movedinto Rae, set up on the citysquare and offered a "quickie"performance for some 500 people, some of whom had come in 100miles or so just to see the ele-phant perform.

Other stands that drew bigcrowds included the oil-boomingtown of Fort McMurray and Atha-basca.

umm mil WELLEDThe cancellation of Canadian dates by RBBB have been blam-

ed on a new tax ruling by Canadian officials, whereby they with-hold 15% of the gross earnings for tax purposes. In the past thecircus has paid its Canadian taxes at the end of the year.

Allen Bloom, executive vice president, was quoted earlieras saying, "The tax situation in Canada is very bad anyway; boththe federal and provincial taxes. Plus the fact that in most ofthe buildings the muscians union is extremely rough."

Bloom says the buildingmanagers in Canada have alwaysbeen cooperative and are sympa-thetic. The cancellation of ourCanadian dates is because of thetax situation and nothing more,he added.

Continuing, Bloom said hefelt "the entire attitude of thegovernment officials is one ofdoing attractions a favor by al-lowing them to come into thecountry."

A return to Canada is definitely out for- this year, saysBloom, who added "what this(tax)amounts to is that they're goingto hold this money until the endof the year when you file yourtaxes, It's ridiculous. They'reholding our money and who knowswhat would happen to it. As dif-ficult as it is to do businesseverywhere and as many buildingsas there are in the U.S. that wecannot play now why should we gosomewhere where they basicallydon't want us?"

I am not surprised thatthere are narrow-minded peoplein our business, who want to livtwith their heads buried in thesand. I am surprised they makeso much noise that they requirea lecture on freedom of thepress and the right of the pub-lic to be informed about what isgoing on, via your editorial.

I'm out on the road full-time, like most show folks, anddon't have time to do my ownwatch-dogging. I am just thank-ful there are others that havemade it their job to do the ne-cessary watchdog duty.

That is why I take CircusReport. It keeps me informed ofthose every day things that Ican't possibly ferret out myself

Keep up the good work.Don't hesitate to print whateveryou find out.

RBBB's Blue Unit, a 2 hourand 45 minute show, runs smooth-ly under the direction of ring-master Harold Ronk. Some goodcircus music is played through-out the show by William Pruynand the circus band.

When seen at the Salt Pal-ace (Salt Lake City) on Aug. 25the program was pretty much thesame as it had been the previousyear, but it now looks better.Among the show's highlights areElvin Bale, who works his rota-ting wheel blindfolded; JeanetteWilliams, and her liberty horseact; the Samel*s mixed group ofwild animals (incidentally, theyown two ligers, born last year).

Other features include theKehaiovi Troupe of teeterboardartists; the Vickies aerial mo-torcycle; the Flying Gaonas andthe wonderful circus elephants, directed by Axel Gautier. Char-ley Baumann was ill and didn'twork the date, but was expectedback in the ring at Kansas City.

The circus is traveling on34 cars - consisting of 7 flats(119-125); 1 tunnel car (126);1 by-level car (127); 5 stockcars (130-134) and 20 coaches(138-158).

Coach 151, damaged byfire last fall, has beenreplaced by a new car,not yet numbered. Stockcar 134, formerly a Post-al car and now used for

horses, was added this year.Flat car 119 was added last yearso the bus and meat truck coulddiscontinue overland movements.

Last year concession wagon50 and 51 were added to the sho*New this year is #52 a snackstand for show personnel.

At the present time theshow has about 26 wagons. The#46 unit, formerly a Red Unitwagon, which is used to carryBale's huge wheel, has an out-standing paint job. The #38 wa-gon (formerly #13) has a nicelettering layout.

Several new cages are be-ing built at Venice (Fla.) fornext year's polar bear act. An89 ft. flat car will be made in-to a tunnel car to carry thosenew cages. It is expected thatthe show will be traveling on atotal of 35 cars in 1976.

The car "Hickory Creek"notused since 1972, still remainsat the show quarters in Venice.
