Communications Intern Job Description 1 Aurora Welcome Center Communications Intern Job Description Position: Communications Intern Type: Unpaid internship Hours: 10-15 hours per week. Preferable 2 to 3 times a week at the office Start Date: Open until filled. Commitment until June 2016 Reports to: Diana Higuera, Executive Director The Aurora Welcome Center began as the Aurora Human Rights Center (AHRC), which was first formed in 2008 when day laborers gathering informally near the corner of Dayton and East Colfax in what is known as Original Aurora became the subject of concern for local businesses and politicians. Several nonprofits groups organizing in and serving the immigrant community in Original Aurora and the east metro Denver area began meeting regularly that fall to explore their common goals, determining there was considerable overlap among their constituencies and the possibility of significant synergism in their co-location. They formed a collaboration to create a jointly-governed, shared-space facility with a focus that has evolved to services for immigrants and refugees with the main objective being integration. AWC is physically situated within Aurora Public Schools to intentionally serve students and families through the schools as well as the community at large. Additionally, AWC provides communal space for individuals and organizations that are a part of and/or serve the international/immigrant community. Our current partners are: African Women Empowerment Group, Colorado African Organization, El Centro Humanitario, Families Forward Resource Center, Focus Points, Global Bhutanese Community of Colorado, Rights for All People, The Denver Foundation’s Strengthening Neighborhoods Program, Jade Woman De LaLonde, Aurora Hills Church, Aurora Public Schools and the City of Aurora. This internship is an excellent opportunity to experience various aspects of integrated communications while working for a community based nonprofit organization Responsibilities: Develop a communications plan Develop and maintain social media presence, including monitoring, posting, scheduling and reporting Facebook updates Assist in planning, writing and managing e-blasts and e-newsletters with residential partners and with the overall community Update and further develop organization’s website Manage event calendar Design flyers, graphics, e-vites and other marketing material Collaborate with Executive Director on new ideas, directions, and tools for marketing and communications Draft, distribute and pitch news releases, media alerts and other stories, when needed

Qualifications: • Firm grasp of available tools and platforms in the social media space • Working towards a master’s degree in Communications, Public Relations or related field. Non-

traditional undergraduate students with mayor in Communications, or related field welcome to apply • Understanding of the basic principles of public relations and/or marketing • Must be computer literate (working knowledge of word processing, PowerPoint, Excel). Proficiency in

Adobe InDesign and Photoshop highly desired. • Knowledge of HTML, website content management and graphic design a plus • Posses excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills • Ability to work well independently • Passionate about working with immigrants and refugees. Being him/herself an immigrant or refugee a

plus • Bilingual English/Spanish and other languages a plus • Commitment to cultural sensitivity and respect for differences • Commitment to the continuous improvement of service quality and the organization’s mission
