New emerging Business Models in Journal Publishing
Martin Voigt
AUP in a nutshell:
- founded in 1992- 25 employees- 170 new titles in 2009, 206 in total- Humanities and social science- In 2009: 55% English, 45% Dutch- 7 Journals: 3 print, 4 Open Access
Why Open Access ?
- enlarges the usasge of scientific literature- enhances the visibility of authors- enlarges the quality of science
How?
All first-copy-costs for authors, their institutes, or the body who finances the research.
Why Open Access journals?
- Science must be free accessible- Journal market is in serial crisis: stops development of new journals - Shrinking audience- Advantages of the internet (enhanced publications)
Open Access journals at AUP:
- Quotidian – Dutch Journal of the study of everyday life (www.quotidian.nl)- International Community of Dutch Language- Journal of Dutch Literature (july 2010)- Media Studies (january 2011)- Journal of Archeology in the Low Countries (JALC) (www.jalc.nl)
The problem=
How does AUP do it:
If there is a need or opportunity for a journal, create a financial basis within the scientific partners:- Libraries, faculties, institutes, etc.
More partners = smaller contribution
Advantages for partners:
- Cheaper than most subscriptions- Partners co-create the journal (advisory board)- Quality of the content is ensured - Less competiton within the area
Guidelines for an OA journal at AUP
• Accessible for all Institutional Repositories of the universities
• Detailed appointments, guidelines for the use of metadata exchange formats (MODS – Metadata Object Discription Scheme)
• Detailed appointments, guidelines for the use of XML container exchange formats for compound objects (DIDL – Digital Item Declaration Language)
• Guidelines used for the European Guidelines (DRIVER – European Digital Academic Archive)
Case Study:Journal of Archeology in the
Low Countries (JALC)
Two institutes asked AUP to calculate the costs for an OA Journal for Archeology in Holland and Belgium. Together we found another 7 partnersto start.
Yearly costs for OA-journal: € 18.000
* journal editor (parttime )* IT-development* overhead costs publisher
For 1 article per month (to start)
Costs per partner per year: € 2.000
+ their investment in time for acquisition, peer reviewing & editorial board
Results:100 % penetration in Dutch archeology community1000 unique visitors every month(# of international visitors N/A)
Earning model for AUP:
All costs are paid (no risk)POD service for articles (subscriptionbased):
- 2 issues a year- 128 pages- Costs: € 99,95 a year- in june 2010: 45 subscriptions (steady)
JALC is an enhanced publication:
- Publications combined with research data- Improve interpretation and verification- Promote available data- Browsable network related items- Makes it easier to verify, reproduce, and re-use the results of research.
