The rst two months of year2014 is almost over but there isstill no visit from the CHED Tech-nical Panel for Medical Education(TPME) to AUP. This has causedgreat concern to AUP alumni, faculty and staff who eagerlyanticipated the TPME visit. Whattranspired during these past fewmonths will surely give us lighton the delay.

In June 2013, AUP submittedits compliance report to the CHED.Unfortunately, the CHED TPME onlymet in November 2013 to deliberateon the documents submitted. Duringtheir meeting, they found out that AUPCOM still had some deciencies. Thedeciencies included the curriculumand some minor issues. The curricu-

lum however is complete but AUP didnot send it to CHED because of someconcerns. Instead AUP told the CHEDthat the TPME will see the documentsonce they visit AUP. Another deciencyis the building. The TPME wants thatthe ofces of the dean and staff areready, and that all the facilities shouldbe found only in one building. It wasonly in the 3rdweek of December whenAUP received a communication fromthe CHED regarding the deciencies.

On January 6, 2014, Dr. FranciscoGayoba, Dr. Mirriam Narbarte, and Dr.

Doris Mendoza went to the CHED andsubmitted the compliance documents.Later, the administrators were told thatthe director of the Ofce of Programsand Standards (OPS) in-charge ofMedicine program has retired in De-cember 2013 and that the term of theTPME has also ended.

Sometime in January, the newOPS director was appointed. Subse-quently, the Technical Panel for Medi-cal Education was reorganized. All themembers of the previous TPME werereappointed and some new members

were added to the group. Because ofthe changes in leadership of the tech-nical panel, Dr. Gayoba, accompaniedby Dr. Narbarte paid a courtesy visit

to the new OPS director. During theirvisit, they reiterated the applicationand asked for a visit so that AUP could

offer the Doctor of Medicine programby June 2014. The technical commit-tee has yet to meet but the new direc-tor assured AUP ofcers that they willsoon meet and she will personally jointhe panel in their visit to AUP.

This month of February, Dr.Narbarte learned that the TPME willnally meet on March 4, 2014. Thepanel will review our compliance reportand if they found adherence, they willschedule for a visit. If recommenda-tions are not complied with, there willbe no panel visit which means that we

have to wait for another year or fewyears before we could open the Doctorof Medicine program.

    Looking back to these events,

    Why the delay

    of the TPMEVisit?

we could see Gods hand leading AUP.If the panel came in November, theycould have denied our appeal because

the building and facilities which wereidentied as deciencies were not yetready. Hopefully, by the time theyvisit in March, those things they wantto see are all completed.

Meanwhile, construction of thebuilding is still in full swing. AUP ishoping for the best and continues towork and pray that God will do what isbest for the University and for the Col-lege of Medicine project. God willingthrough our prayers and nancial sup-port we could inaugurate the buildingon May 13, 2014 with no less than the

General Conference president ElderTed Wilson gracing the event.

Constructing the College ofMedicine building is indeed a gar-

gantuan task for the University. As of this date, the total expendi-tures for the project since its plan-ning stage is Php 84,064,253.56.For sure this amount will con-tinue to increase as the nishingtouches are completed and theequipment are brought in. Theadministration expects that thetotal expenditures including theprocurement of equipment willreach Php100 million.

    Even with the burgeoning cost,

the administration is determined tonish the project. As a matter of fact,

the university shouldered about 50%of the expenditures but is hoping thatalumni and friends from all over theworld would continue to send theirnancial support even after the build-ing has been completed.

The table of the COM FundraisingReport shows how far the fund raisingdrive has gone. So far only 471 alumniand friends have shared their blessingsfor our project. Two hundred two arefrom abroad and 269 from the Philip-pines. Alumni from far and near are

invited to support the COM project. The university knows that the

alumni have their own challenges tomeet in life and that they have theirministries to support and priorities toachieve. But the university asks thatthey include the College of Medicinebuilding project as one of their projectstoo. Their gift to God though small itmay seem, when gathered togetherwill denitely help for the projectscompletion.

    Online Giving forAUP Projects

Realizing the need for anavenue where alumni and sup-porters all over the world couldsupport our University, AUP has

ventured into another method ofreceiving donations for its proj-ects. In partnership with Secu-rity Bank, AUP is establishing itsonline giving program dubbed asUSHARE. This will be operationalin the month of March. In thisprogram, anyone could donateany amount to AUP through hisor her credit card.

To donate, one only needs to visitthe AUP website and click on the USH-ARE button and follow its instructions.Once a person donates, Security Bank

will notify AUP so that donors couldbe properly acknowledged. For theservice charge, a minimal 3% of thedonation will be deducted by the bank. This means that AUP will receive 97%of the donation. However, even withthe service charge, it is a very con-venient way for supporters especiallyour alumni and friends who are notmembers of any alumni organizationto give their donations.

The Art of GivingRemember to be gentle with yourself and others. We are all

children of chance, and none can say why some fields will

blossom and others lay brown beneath the August sun. Care

for those around you. Look past your differences. Their

dreams are no less than yours, their choices in life no more

easily made. And give. Give in any way you an of whatever

you possess. To give is to love. To withhold is to wither. Care

less for your harvest than how it is shared, and your life will

have meaning and your heart will have peace.
