More than News “Shoot for No Malaria” Several years ago the United Methodist Church began a project to provide nets for people in Africa so that they would be able to sleep without contracting Malaria through mosquitoes. When the NBA heard about this they asked if they could join the Methodists in providing nets for all the children and people. About this same time Bill Gates sent his dad to a meeting concerning the Nothing but Nets program and offered to match what the United Methodists and the NBA would raise. As a result the Nothing but Nets has become a strong ministry to help supply netting for thousands of people. As a result of this ongoing ministry, our Bishop has taken on the challenge of shooting 1000 baskets in order to raise money for “Nothing But Nets.” In another related article in this edition of “The Circuit Rider” we find there are several ways we can help this project. One way is to guess how many baskets Bishop Jones can make. He thinks he can make 650 in a day’s time. But knowing the Bishop's skill level, Mary Lou believes he might make 200 if he is lucky. Given the fact it was the eighth grade when Bishop Jones participated in his last competitive ball game; I believe Mary Lou’s guess is much more reasonable than the Bishops. In fact, I really don’t think the Bishop comprehends what it will be like to shoot 1000 free throws. The way we can help out is by making a donation of $10.00 in order to guess how many he will make out of the 1000 shots. Another way we could help is by either sponsoring a three on three tournament with the proceeds going to the “Nothing but Nets.” We could also sponsor the Bishop my making a donation for every shot he makes. The Bishops shoot off will be some time in February. We still have time to become involved in this important ministry to the people of Africa . If you would like to guess how many baskets the Bishop will make in February; just write a check for $10.00 out to the church and then mark it for Bishop’s Hoops. We will send the money on to the Nets program. If any one else has an idea, please let me know. Your Pastor, Terry McGuire

Shoot for No Malaria website launched

12/12/2012 It’s not often you have the opportunity to save lives by shooting hoops, but this February,

every church in the Great Plain s Episcopal Area is encouraged to do just that.

Bishop Scott Jones has called for every United Methodist church in Kansas and

Nebraska to be involved in the challenge, Shoot for No Malaria, by hosting or

participating in an event during the month of February. Churches are invited to be

creative. Events primarily will be basketball-themed affairs, such as free-throw contests,

three-on-three tournaments, shoot-outs, etc.

Local churches will be supported in this mission by materials from the conference

offices. Many of these resources are now available on the newly launched Shoot for No

Malaria website, www.shootfornomalaria.net. The website includes a form for churches

to register their Shoot for No Malaria events as well as a form for churches to share their

commitments to the Imagine No Malaria initiative. Resources such as wristbands, DVDs,

posters and more also are available to order from the Shoot for No Malaria website.

Jones has made a challenge of his own: he’s going to attempt to make 1,000 free throws

in a single day! He guesses he’ll make 650; his wife, Mary Lou Reece, guesses he’ll

make 200.

You can help him by making a donation of $10 and guessing how many free throws he

will make. The bishop will give five nets in honor of the individual or individuals who

guess the right number. All the funds will go to Imagine No Malaria. The three highest

donors from each conference, and the individual or individuals who guess the number of

free throws made will be recognized during the spring conference sessions.

Visit www.shootfornomalaria.net

today to make your life-saving

commitment, start planning your

event and take a guess at the bishop’s

free throw skills!

Together, we can save lives.
